"Perfect For Everyone (especially Parents & Classrooms)"
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and for about a million reasons. But I'll just share a few.

Chances are good that you already know the basic premise: Three astronauts embark on a space mission to the moon, but technical complications not only jeopardize the mission, but their lives as well. Back on Earth, the Mission Control team based out of Houston work around the clock to get the astronauts home safely.

Based on real events (and mostly faithful, according to those who lived through them), the story does so many things right that most movies from the "disaster genre" or "rescue genre" to wrong.

First and foremost, we actually care about these characters. Director Ron Howard and the screenwriters dedicate equal time to the people and historical events on Earth as the intense drama that occurs in space. Besides the expected focus on the Mission Control Team who tirelessly work to get the Apollo 13 crew home, there's even a "prologue" of sorts before the April 13th, 1970 launch. Perhaps the most notable moment from these opening scenes is when Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) must decide whether to stick up for a potentially sick co-pilot (risking his chances of going to space), or to opt for a replacement. Or how about seeing Lovell's youngest daughter almost being too depressed over The Beatles' breakup to go see her father's broadcast from space? APOLLO 13 doesn't just delay the suspenseful scenes like JAWS or ALIEN do. Don't get me wrong, those are great movies, but again, Earth and space are equally important as the other in this story.

What history buffs will most appreciate is the political and historical attention to detail. Our three astronuats (played terrifically by Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon) are portrayed as everyday people with their own ambitions and personalities. These guys like to drink and embrace their women as much as they venture into the unknown. The Houston Mission Control director Gene Kranz (a superb Ed Harris) is introduced in a very unusual way --- a NASA vest arrives in a parcel from his wife; the camera follows the gift box, and once the vest (ridiculed by most of the staff) is worn, then we see Kranz's face. And Jim Lovell's wife Marylin (Kathleen Quinlan in another great role) does way, way more than just sob at home over her husband's danger in space. I've always wondered this question: How does an endangered man's wife keep the family together while they may never see their father again? APOLLO 13 answers this little factoid, among many other pieces of info. Every character contributes to the story, even the forgotten NASA individuals who took every precaution in split-second timing to get their pilots home. The modern equivalent of APOLLO 13 might actually be the TV show 24. Rather than focus on what went wrong, the film wisely just lets the characters say, "Okay, something's wrong, and we better move quick or else..."

The true star of APOLLO 13 isn't even the special effects, which indeed are still impressive. Actually, what becomes the foreground of the picture is all of the scientific detail that goes into solving the horrifying problem of getting three men trapped in a fragile spacecraft back to Earth. APOLLO 13 does a perfect job in helping us understand what's going on at every second of the crisis. News telecasts (some archival footage, some reenacted) show TV experts and old interviews that viewers at home would've seen. The Mission Control crew in Houston speak an unbelievable amount of lingo that I'm not sure I understood everything they said. But then when you see them draw on chalkboards, or put together models. And even if you don't understand what the technicians are saying, their vocal tone & behavior will make it clear. Simply put, anybody can understand what's going on in APOLLO 13, from the cultural events to the space sequences. Rather than insult your intelligence, APOLLO 13 puts it to work, and makes you a smarter person because of it.

I'll leave the rest for you to discover, but I want to give a final recommendation to any educators or concerned parents that are reading this review. In addition to a fabulous wealth of extras that everyone should check out, this 2-disc includes the IMAX version of APOLLO 13. This IMAX features slightly better video & audio quality, but the great thing about this version is that it's about 15 minutes shorter. The scenes that were cut from this IMAX version were mainly the ones that might offend parents, meaning you won't hear any curse words or see couples making out with each other. This film that was released in theaters was originally PG-13 for a couple days, so if you're concerned about the content your kids watch, the IMAX cut isn't going to offend anybody. Plus, this IMAX version removed some of the scenes on Earth that came before the space launch. So, if you just want to get to the "good stuff", then you have an alternative version.

APOLLO 13 is perfect in every way. It's exciting, educational. uplifting, well-crafted, well-acted, and an important chapter in American history. I don't really care about what happens in space, and I personally hate science. But if a film can take a subject I despise and win me over, then I owe it to the filmmakers to share it with every person I possibly can. Decades from now, APOLLO 13 is going to hold up incredibly well with future audiences. There are so many movies coming out that it's hard for new film buffs to know which ones to pick. APOLLO 13 doesn't deserve to be forgotten.

"A very good and realistic movie about APOLLO 13 and human determination"
The movie APOLLO 13 and of course the real odyssey that took place in 1970 are more than just a near space tragedy and an aborted manned flight to the moon. They are about human determination, intelligence, cooperation and the fight for life in time of a very big crisis and challenge which in case of APOLLO 13 created a miracle. Returning safely back to Earth was a miracle because after an oxygen tank exploded in the service module en route to the moon, the spacecraft was so crippled that, not only was the moon landing cancelled, but the astronauts in APOLLO 13 together with staff of Houston mission control had to think and act fast to solve many of the lethal problems that emerged in the spacecraft. The movie has historical value as well because it dramatizes excellently the APOLLO 13 adventure which certainly is a very important event in the history of manned space flights. I highly recommend everybody to watch this DVD, not just to people who are interested in manned space flights but also to people who want to see what miracles human determination and intelligence can achieve.

"Apollo13: The Story of REAL Heroes"
Okay, for you technophiles, Universal did a good job in the transfer to DVD. The colors are vivid and the picture is razor sharp. Sound quality is great and the overall experience is worth the price of admission. Save your money and buy the single disc set. The second disc is an edited IMAX version and the "extras" on the second disc are so so. All of the "good" extras are on the single disc version.

Now for the REAL story. Plain and simple, these guys were heroes in every sense of the word. They risked their lives for what they believed in, without heavenly financial compensation (they got their regular pay, plus flight pay, plus hazardous duty pay) In today's dollars that about $300 flight pay and $125 a month to risk your life. Many of the men in this program had families.

Truly a contrast to today's heroes (Sports Figures) who act like spoiled brats and cry if they get a hang-nail. All this, while collecting a salary the would support 100 families in the US. I'd like to see any of today's heroes maintain their composure while everything around them is failing. If you lose a ball game, there is always next year. If you "lose" in space, you're dead.

I grew up in the 60's with the space program and this film is a true testiment to the courage, skill, dedication, and selflessness of the entire NASA team.

Kind of a interesting closing point. Take note when Tom Hanks (Comm. Jim Lovell) is on the carrier deck after splash down/pick-up. He shakes the hand of a Navy Captain (left side of frame). That is THE Jim Lovell (Captain, USN Retired) and he is wearing HIS original Navy uniform, still fits him after all these years. Nice touch on the part of Director Ron Howard and great tribute film to the men who gave their all for their country and each other.

"WHY THE MISSING SCENES???"
Being a big follower of the space program since the mid-1960s, I was really excited when Apollo 13 was released..first on VHS, then to DVD. But on both the DVD-released versions, why are there scenes missing? One that I noticed right away is when Barbara Lovell(the Lovell's eldest daughter) doesn't want to go to Mission Control to watch the TV broadcast from space. Presumably because she is upset over the Beatle's breakup. Then much of the TV broadcast itself from the VHS version is missing. There were more missing, as well. It was a little disconcerting..especially with the "anniversary" edition. But the essence of the story..the triumph of the human spirit in the face of extraordinary odds...still remains true.

"Apollo 13"
Great movie. Even though you know what i going to happen it is still full of suspense.

What our customer's say!

"Great movie, great DVD, great price - how can you go wrong?", It seems impossible to think that an Oscar-nominated film (in several major categories) could be considered "under-rated." But this is certainly the case with Apollo 13. Perhaps Ron Howard's best film, it is an exciting, harrowing, and ultimately rewarding film-watching experience that doesn't let you down on repeated viewings. Howard brings out the most in his cast - the casual viewer will be surprised at the depth and nuance the performances of Gary Sinese and Bill Paxton. This is also Kevin Bacon's breakout role (with Mystic River). I would even go so far as to say this might be Tom Hanks greatest performance - yes, even better than "Philadelphia", "Forrest Gump", or "Saving Private Ryan" (it is most similar to the last, perhaps unsurprisingly as his Apollo 13 character is an Air Force officer). But the performances are only part of the puzzle. The filming - much of it in sets built for microgravity filming in a NASA training plane - is a remarkable feat of cinematic sleight of hand, and I am still shocked and dismayed that Howard did not win the "best director" Oscar. There has never been a movie that uses special effects so effectively as this one.

The story is likely well-known to most: the 3rd American mission to the moon suffers a catestrophic failure when a fuel cell blows up, leaving the three astronauts aboard with little power and no hope of rescue. Howard dishes out the drama in stages, as first the oxygen tanks leak out, to the temperature dropping, to erratic course corrections, to gradual poisoning of the atmosphere on the ship by respired carbon dioxide. He does not neglect the peripheral members of the NASA team, and pays special attention to Lovell's wife and family. The IMAX version, some 15 minutes shorter, is also included on this Anniversary Edition. It's instructive to note that the longer version is a more effective film, since he spends more time developing the relationships that allow us to care for the characters.

For those that have seen the movie many times, I would direct them to the making-of features as a reason to buy this bargain-priced DVD. Of most interest to me was the audio commentary by Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell. He is candid about where the film fails to accurately portray either the science or the details of the actual mission, while Ron Howard's commentary explains why these changes were made cinematically (as an example - the film shows Mattingly in the simulator exclusively, while in reality there were three simulators and teams of astronauts working in them all simultaneously). Lovell's wife Marilyn (portrayed by Kathleen Quinlin in the film) is also part of the commentary, and her input is equally valuable. One amusing part is the discussion of miniskirts:

Jim: "Hey, they dressed Kathleen in miniskirts through this whole movie. Did you really wear them that much?"
Marilyn: "Well, it was the style at the time..."

To sum up, this is a 5-star movie on a 5-star DVD.

""I look up at the moon and wonder: 'When will we be going back, and who will that be?'"", APOLLO 13 is one of those wonderfully crafted films, where the climax carries no surprise, no plot twists, no unexpected revelations, yet is immensely satisfying.

Directed by Ron Howard, the splendid cast led by Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise, Bill Paxton, Kathleen Quinlan and a host of others, combine in an absorbing, riveting story of the space program's finest hour - the triumph of human ingenuity in the face of overwhelming technical failure.

The crew of Apollo 13 faces certain death, when a catastrophic explosion in the service module threatens to transform the command module into a floating sepulchre. By their wits, and that of the dedicated ground crew, they use the lunar module as a lifeboat, while a cadre of dedicated professionals devises a way to bring the fragile craft back to earth.

The technical aspects of the film are splendid, and Mr. Howard recreates the images and feelings of those heady days of the space program. The widescreen presentation is the only way to go. Special effects complement the story perfectly: they are wholly satisfying without the gratuitous excess so common in more recent movies. The pacing and dialogue are impeccably timed as the NASA team - crew and support - overcome challenge after challenge in the desperate drive to bring Lovell (Hanks), Haise (Paxton) and Swigert (Bacon) home to earth.

The drama succeeds on many levels. First, the actors in large roles and small are thoroughly believable - even when incidents and events are heightened for dramatic effect, they are completely credible. Second, the dialogue (for anyone familiar with engineers, pilots, corporate managers, bureaucrats, etc.) is realistic. Third, the writing is crisp, the timing perfect and the interplay among all levels of characters is exact.

The Special Edition has a number of exceptional features, including Ron Howard's commentary, Jim and Marilyn Lovell's audio, and the intriguing documentary on the making of the film.

APOLLO 13 is, in my opinion, Ron Howard's best work - and given his other films, that is really saying something.

"Apollo 13", The DVD doesn't work. It's an HD DVD and we tried it on 3 DVD players in our house. I'm very disappointed that it is defective.

""Houston,we have a problem!"", "Apollo 13" is a cinematic classic. It was one of Ron Howard's first films, and still has resonance today. The Apollo 13 mission was ill-fated from the start. One of the crew was grounded, assumed to be ill. Jim Lovell's (Tom Hanks) wife lost her wedding ring. Yet the mission still went on.

"Apollo 13" shows the gripping adventure on board the spaceship. It was a life and death struggle. Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon skillfully depict the crew's loyalty and squabbling. Their struggle to orbit the Moon- as well as return home alive- captured the world. People united in prayer. It's an inspirational story. Ed Harris is great as the grounded crewmember who famously said,"Failure is not an option!"

"Apollo 13" is powerful and inspiring. It launches the soul.

"Great Movie", This movie is just superb. The story is great, acting is great, and the historical accuracy is perfect. I loved the attention to detail that went into this movie. Definitely a must see even if you're not a space or NASA buff.

"Great", I love it. It came complete with different behind the scenes that i didnt expect

"Great movie", I purchased this movie because I felt that the HD would do it justice. After watching it, I was not overly impressed with the HD quality. Only some of the scenes seemed sharper than the standard DVD. I am still happy with the movie and glad that I got it.

"A peerless coverage of NASA's finest moment!", Having worked at and retired from the Kennedy Space Center, this film most definitely satisfied my personal and professional needs for truth, accuracy, and realism in its creation. Ron Howard did a masterful job of directing, and there was an obvious quest for excellence by all who participated in all aspects producing this fine film.

I will not retell the story here, as it has been well-covered by dozens of excellent reviews. But from the perspective of someone who actually is a "rocket scientist," I can assure you of its veracity, which was enhanced by some of the filming locations, and most prominently by the actors who were cast in the various important roles. Tom Hanks was at his finest here - the perfect casting, if you will, As Jim Lovell. But even Tom was slightly upstaged by Kathleen Quinlan, a much under-rated and perhaps under-appreciated actress. Bill Paxton was outstanding, and Kevin Bacon's was low-key excellence. But the show may have been stolen by Ed Harris, whose casting in the role of Gene Kranz was a directorial coup-d'etat, as both his appearance and performance were flawless!

While there was not a true weak link in the entire film, its realism was enough to send chills down the spines of those of us who have functioned at KSC. Yes, there were some creative shots in the film, such as Gary Senise driving his Corvette dangerously close to the launch pad, which was impossible, but such "creativity" was held to an absolute minimum. The entire story is graphic proof that truth is often much more impactful than the finest fiction. Absolutely a keeper!

"One of Ron Howard's best, great performance by Tom Hanks", This is the type of movie that you can watch over and over and not get sick of it. I always get a sense of mankind's achievement and a national pride when an entire mission control, their staff, and the manufacturers behind all the technology rally together to bring 3 men home in the deep span of space. That's why we never stop to explore both in distance and in our mind. Tom Hanks stated it in the movie, "Can you imagine if no one went back to the new world after Christopher Columbus came back?.. or something like that." It's an awesome movie.

"An Incredible Journey of Courage and Survival...", Recently my wife and I sat down to watch a series of documentaries focusing on the various NASA missions from the beginning stages of Project Mercury all the way through some of the space shuttle missions. For people who aren't entirely familiar or were just somewhat familiar on the events, but were maybe lacking some of the details, these documentaries that aired on the Discovery Channel were most informative. As a result, the experience left my wife and I wanting to watch some space related movies, and first on our list was the 1995 box office hit "Apollo 13" from director Ron Howard ("Ransom"), starring Tom Hanks ("Forrest Gump"), Ed Harris ("National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets"), and Kevin Bacon ("Death Sentence").

"Apollo 13" chronicles the fateful mission that has been dubbed the "successful failure" by NASA, which had all of America holding its collective breath as it wondered if the mission would end in disaster or would it become one of our finest hours. When the space craft transporting Astronauts, Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), to the moon suffers a catastrophic accident, the mission and the lives of the Astronauts are instantly changed. Now, the once moon-bound ship is left severely crippled, and what began as a seemingly routine mission to the moon has now become a rescue mission as the Houston-based members of NASA's Mission Control are racing against time and almost impossible odds to return these three men safely to Earth.

Director Ron Howard had established himself as a fairly solid director in the early 90's with hits such as "Backdraft" and "Far and Away" under his belt, but it wasn't until the release of "Apollo 13" that he was able to firmly cement himself as a much sought after, critically-acclaimed director. Relying on state-of-the-art (as of 1995) special effects and film tricks and techniques to simulate weightlessness, along with an incredibly emotional and compelling story written by William Broyles, Jr. ("Flags of Our Fathers") and Al Reinert, based on the book written by Astronaut Jim Lovell and co-writer Jeffrey Kluger; Ron Howard has crafted one of the best and completely realistic movies I have ever seen to focus on one of NASA's missions in space.

The cast of "Apollo 13" was an assortment of top-notch talent, such as; Tom Hanks, who made this film on the heels of his smash hit "Forrest Gump", Kevin Bacon ("Death Sentence"), Gary Sinise (who had co-starred alongside Hanks in "Forrest Gump"), Kathleen Quinlan ("Breakdown"), Bill Paxton ("Tombstone"), and Ed Harris. Each member of the cast portrayed these real life Astronauts, their wives, or the people in Mission Control perfectly, easily handling each emotional high and low throughout this inspiring story of survival.

The well-written screenplay, expert direction, and extremely talented cast brought to life not only this harrowing journey in space, but also gave audiences a glimpse into what NASA life is like for the Astronauts and the loved ones left behind on Earth awaiting their safe return. Thanks to the painstaking length to which Ron Howard and company went to in order to make this a movie that is so incredibly realistic on every level, "Apollo 13" serves as a fitting tribute to the brave men and women that endured the situation by overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, and also to the ingenuity and will power of man to set their sights on a goal and to never give up until it was achieved.

"Apollo 13" is rated PG for language and peril.
