Others say...
"Great for most things, but not Dish Network!" I am using this universal remote to replace another universal remote that cost $125! I does almost everything the expensive one does, but if you have Dish Network, keep your Dish remote handy. I had to use the learning function to "teach" the Sony all of the Dish remote commands. Most are OK, but the annoying thing is that the directional buttons, which are constantly used by us satellite watchers to browse the guide or select porgramming. Apparently, when the Sony directional button is depressed, it only sends a signal once, and will not move the selector on the screen more than one position. The Dish remote will continuously move the selector in any direction, as when you are moving through the program guide. To make matters worse, most of the time, you have to press the button twice to get it to work. Had I known this before purchase, I probably would have kept looking. However, now that it's all programmed, I have narrowed down to 2 remotes, instead of 5. Nice job for an inexpensive remote control.
"Some weird hiccups" I had high hopes for this remote and in most regards this remote met them. The learning feature is ridiculous. I have a WD TV which is not supported at this time but I was able to teach the remote everything I needed under the SAT button(including power). But still, not perfect. I have a Sony AMP and this thing didn't control it. Thankfully I was able to teach it everything using the learning but this was not something I want to do for a full remote. This remote lets you set the volume control to either TV or AMP but its an all or nothing affair and I had to change my wiring to deal with this. Also, I don't know if this is because I had to set everything under AMP manually but the volume control works in increments of one. By that I mean I cannot hold down the volume buttons to raise it or lower it a lot. I also had a weird problem with left and right being reversed out of the box. Oh and this may be nitpicking but its not comfortable in the hand. The wedge shape makes is off balance and the edges do not make me want to keep it in my hand. Overall it is a nice remote. It does everything it says it will. The learning feature is invaluable, but there are somethings that could have been improved.
"Awesome and Affordable " I've been reading Amazon reviews for years, but this is the first one I've written - THAT'S how much I love this remote! First, let it be said I don't consider myself particularly "tech savvy" - I can read a set of instructions, IF they're well written - fortunately the manual for this remote is well laid out and easy to follow.
About my equipment: for Christmas, I bought a Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020fd HDTV and a Panasonic DMP-BD35k Blu Ray player for myself (um, I mean, for my FAMILY :) but at present I am mixing these modern technical marvels with a much older stereo system (NAD stereo amp and CD player) and even older Sony VCR for recording. All this with a cable box to boot. So you can imagine how many remotes I was trying to juggle. I was concerned that this cheap remote (got it under $20) might not be able to control such varied things effectively. Also I noticed that Amazon's "bestselling" lineup for universal remotes had the much more expensive "Logitech" brand in the top 6 slots, followed by this remote. These Logitech remotes ranged in price from about $60 to a whopping $260. Now I generally agree that you get what you pay for, so I was worried this little $20 remote might not do the job. I'm so happy to report I was totally wrong!
The Blu ray player worked great after simply keying in the (provided) code, but the Sony had to "learn" some of the TV's remote control functions. This was easily accomplished following the manual. That said, in fairness I didn't try to teach the Sony every single command from the original remote - frankly if I need some of the more obscure commands once in a while it'll probably be easier just to dig out the Pioneer remote. But the 10-12 basic things I taught the Sony will easily satisfy my needs 90% of the time. Also, the codes provided for NAD wouldn't work on my older stereo amp. However with the "Codesearch" option I was able to find the right code in 5-10 minutes, and it worked fine. Finally, because I sent the sound from the TV through my stereo amp, I found that at first I had to switch to the remote's "AMP" button every time I needed to mute or adjust the volume - very annoying. But Sony was way ahead of me - they addressed this issue in the manual, and after a few easy button presses the volume/mute worked regardless of whether I was set on TV, cable, or amp. Sweet.
I did notice some of the other reviewers seem to have had some issues with programming various components, so I imagine it would be advisable to contact the manufacturer for advice if you have any unusual brands. But all I can say is everything worked perfectly for me. Best of all was the "One-Touch System Control". It was a snap to program ONE button to turn on the TV, cable box, and amp when I want to watch TV. BING, one button for everything "on" or "off". There are four of these system control buttons, so I programmed another to turn on the TV/DVD/amp when I want to watch a movie, and another to turn on only the amp/CD player when I just want to listen to CD's. Really, really nice.
Not to rag on other brands - I'm sure the Logitechs are super-cali-fragi-listicly fancy, with their LCD screens and all - but honestly for day-to-day use it's kind of hard to imagine that the average consumer really NEEDS to spend up to 10 times as much as for this little sweetheart. KUDOS, Sony!
"greate remote" This is a wonderful universal remote. If you are looking for a remote control to operate all of your electronics devices, buy this one. The best feature is the system configuration feature in which you can turn everything on and off at the same time. Very convenient and easy to use.
"Finally, a Truly Universal Remote!" I bought this remote in attempt to replace several remotes and simplify watching TV. My setup includes a Sony TV, Sony VCR, Sony DVD player, Dish TR40 digital TV converter box, Samsung DTB-H260F HDTV tuner, and a Channel Master antenna rotater. I didn't think I'd ever find a remote that would handle all of these components. This remote is up to the task. The Sony items were a no-brainer. The remote operated these items out of the box. The digital converter box and HDTV tuner were a little more difficult. Codes are provided, but none seemed to work for me. However, since the remote can learn from other remotes, I was able to program pretty much all of the functions into the Sony remote. I used the same process for the antenna rotater. Not all was perfect with this remote. I wanted to program a macro to make it play a VCR tape. To do this, I had to switch my TV input to VHS. My Sony TV has several inputs, and requires three clicks of the "TV/Video" button to get it from it's usual input to the one I use for the VCR. No matter what I did, the macro would only switch the input twice, equal to pressing the TV/Video button twice. If it had done this correctly I would have given it five stars. I still haven't found out if there is a memory limit to how many functions you can teach the remote or how many macros it will run, unlike a one for all remote I also own. One feature I do like is where you can program a button such as "TV" to do more than one operation by holding it down two seconds. I made it so that when you do this it turns the TV on as well as turns the HDTV tuner on. Very handy, especially when you are telling someone unfamiliar with your set-up how to watch TV. "Just hold the TV button down for two seconds, then operate as normal..."

What our customer's say!
"Solved my Dish Network problems", I had difficulty finding a universal remote that would operate my DishNetwork vip-612 receiver/DVR. I tried Universal Remote R6, but it would not address my satellite box. This Sony finally did the trick, although there was no pre-programmed coding that matched (other reviews here matching their vip-722 didn't work for me). But I "taught" this remote the power button; that worked, so we "learned" everything else. Had to use a little creativity as I started running out of buttons, but now everything works perfectly.
The overall layout of controls is not to my liking, and the small (Guide, Menu, Exit and something called "Tools") buttons feel a bit flimsy, but it is doing exactly what I want it to.
Curiously, the device it seems to have the most trouble with is a Sony! My combo DVD/VCR player was not preprogrammed (and Sony provides no codes here for their own products!), and I can't quite get everything to work, but the major functions are fine - play, pause, skip, subtitles. I just can't get fast forward or rewind to respond... yet.
Overall, it's just a remote control - nothing to get excited about (unles it doesn't work).
"Remote Control ", This remote does all that it can do, It was easy to program and it worked great. Only one improvement to it would be buttons that light up in dark.
"High learning curve worth it", I replaced three remotes with this one. I had a quasi-universal remote but it didn't perform all the functions so I didn't use it as a universal. There are two big advantages with this one.
First, the learning function. While the presets copied about 80% of the functions, there were many that didn't copy. The learning worked like a breeze. Also, you can eliminate preset functions on the universal remote and replace them with ones you used from the old remote.
Second, the system buttons along the bottom allow you to complete multiple functions with one button. This was a function I didn't recognize as such in the description. For example, I can turn on the DVD and TV, and switch the TV to the DVD line with a push of the button. The only function I couldn't duplicate was opening the disc tray.
Great device and a good price.
"Great!", This is a very-well designed universal remote. It is very easy to program, compared to others I've tried.
I recommend photocopying pictures of each original remote and multiple photocopies of this one and use them in pairs to show mapping from old to new.
Sony is good about telling you which keys are programmed automatically so you don't have to guess.
I like this feature: when you press a key, it lights up the device key so you know that you're sending to the right device.
There are 4 keys at the bottom that can be used to do a number of keypresses. Nice!
Don't let the picture of the remote scare you off. It really looks much nicer in person.
I am using this with a Sony TV (set up by default to work great), a Bose sound system (can be programmed to work with any or all devices!), a DVR (a bit of a challenge because it's unknown to Sony), and a Microsoft remote receiver used for Windows Media Center. This is going to make things so much easier than trying to use 4 different remote controls (especially the huge Bose remote).
Highly recommended.
"Great remote for the price", Just bought this remote yesterday, so I cannot speak about durability. But after pondering over which Logitech Harmony remote to buy, for the past week, I came across Amazon's review for this remote. Though not as sleek and elegant as the Harmonies (I was looking at the 520, 550 and 720), I must say, for the price, this remote does all that I wanted from a remote.
The channel Up/Down buttons on our Samsung flat screen stopped working after 2 years. I wanted a replacement remote and was attracted by the Logitech Harmony line of remotes' sleek design and generally positive reviews. However the cheapest 520 was for $45 and the other models went higher. Also the reviews indicated the battery life of the Logitech remotes was shorter due to their LCD screens and buttons blacklit glow feature.
After reading the reviews for this remote, I bought one from our local Sears store, selling for $25, just incase I needed to return it if it did not work with my TV. In a matter of minutes I was able to make it work for my TV, just by entering one of the Samsung TV codes that comes in the code list included in the remote packaging. Next I added my Pioneer DVD player. For special keys like Picture in Picture on the TV remote, you just make the Sony remote learn the command from the old remote by assigning it to any free button on the Sony remote. It's a very simple procedure, you just point both remotes to each other and follow a sequence of a few simple steps. Did the same for some special buttons on the DVD and have both remotes configured to this one instead. Infact I also went ahead and added the standing fan to the list so I can start/shut/rotate/oscillate and change speeds on the fan using this remote. Mapped it to the VCR button since I don't have a VCR :-).
The only minor issue is having to remember the various customized functions you have assigned to the various keys of the remote. Other than that, everything else is pretty straight forward. And at this price will not feel bad if the kids throw this around or if some buttons start dying in 2 years.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Good Universal Remote", This is a very good universal remote, especially for the price. I had it controlling my TV, DVD player, and stereo in a matter of minutes. There was no code for my model TV, so I used the remote's learn function and was surprised at how efficient and easy it was to set up.
It is nothing special to look at and it very large in your hand, but it does a lot so its to be expected.
Would highly recommend.
"Junk", Worked once, then messed up my cable connection. a typical Sony product: 8000 function you will never use and problems using basic functions.
"Guaranteed to work with every device", If you have tried to program a universal remote, you know that they sometimes lack functions available on the original remote. This was the dilemma I faced: my entertainment system consisted of an obsolete satellite receiver and a brand new digital TV converter box. I never thought I would find a universal remote that would recognize both of these devices. However, with this learning remote, it was very simple to teach the command of each button using the original remote of an unrecognized device. Simply enter learning mode, select the device and button you want the remote to learn, then hold the corresponding button on the original remote.
Just like any other universal remote, there are other options for programming a specific device as well. My TV and DVD player are made by Sony and both of these worked instantly. Using the traditional code entry, I was also able to program my CD player and audio receiver.
There is no reason to have more than one remote control in a single room. This one seems to be well made and is easy to use. For around $20, it is about the same cost as any other universal remote, but much cheaper than those with learning functionality. Highly recommended!
"Awesome remote-wish that I had bought one sooner!!", This is the easiest remote control that I have ever programmed. It replaced 6 remotes that I was using and programming it is effortless.
The list of codes was missing two devices that I needed to use a remote to operate, but the "learning" function makes it very easy and effective to program to replace these remotes. It is really a smooth operation to program each key on the Sony to control each key from the old remote. You can set any key to control any function--very easily!
It also has "macro" operation buttons which you can program to execute several keystrokes at a time-like turn on the TV, switch the video signal, turn on the DVD, and finally turn on the sound system to watch a movie--all in one keystroke!! Fantastic gizmo.
Now, all I have to do is have one unit to control everything and it works flawlessly. My only regret is that I did not get one sooner!
Amazon shipped lightning fast!! Ordered on Thursday afternoon and it arrived before noon on Friday--all with free shipping. I love Amazon!
"learning feature works well", I got this remote to work with 2dvd players,TV,Cablebox,Ipod music player, even a digital controlled heater, this remote will learn pretty much any IR command. It takes a little time to map every button from your previous remotes(if you want to do that) to a button on this remote, but that happens with most universal remotes. The buttons are big and respond well and there are enough buttons to control all the important functions of most devices. One negative the remote doesn't glow but that does tend to eat batteries on other remotes anyway. I bought a few universal learning remotes before mostly from Radioshack, in the $10-30 range and this is the best in terms of overall options and price/performance. Many universal remotes won't even learn many IR commands, but this one had no problems with the learning feature.
