Others say...
"Great headphones, but not the best for the $$$" First of all, read the other reviews carefully. I've noticed that several of them are actually reviews of the DT770s and the DT990s. These comments are about the DT880s. And at least two other reviews refer to these as "sealed" headphones. They are NOT sealed...they are open-backed and will not seal out ambient noise or help you keep your music to yourself.
I'll be brief. The tonal balance and clarity of these phones are very, very good. Comfort is exceptional, as is quality of construction. They are a good value for their price range and can be highly recommended for you to audition. Are they "the best"? Not in my opinion. My AKG K-701s and Sony MDR-SA3000s have better high-end clarity, but slightly less low-end. My Grado 325is have much better presence and imaging, though they are less comfortable and not constructed as durably. The Sennheiser HD-650s sound better overall. I'd suggest comparing the DT880s to a few of these I've mentioned.
I will also reiterate what others have stated: these are relatively inefficient headphones. You WILL need a headphone amp to enjoy these. If you can't afford a nice headphone amp (be prepared to spend at least $125 on an amp), buy some Sennheisers. Also, be aware of this when you audition the DT880s. If you switch between these and a pair of more efficient headphones, you will probably be unduly impressed by the simple difference in volume.
"An excellent pair of headphones" Pros: sound, style, comfort Cons: none other than price.
DT 880 is one of the best out there. Here's why: 1- Acoustics: this is serious stuff. Tonal purity and imaging are amazing. Yet, you need some power to drive the transducers, though not that much. I upped the amplification around 3-4 dB, and boy! Right out of the box it performed. I have tried a number of genres including classical (Respighi's Botticelli Pictures) where the oboe comes to life, and rock (Simple Minds)-you'll hear everything to perfection. One word of caution, though: The bass is very musical, deep and clear all the way down to the bottom of the range. Those who look for a booming bass should go with other than DT880.
2-Comfort: These headphones aren't that heavy. The fabric padding is soft and comfy, and the fit is perfect. As for listening comfort, DT 880 does not give me that "noisy" feel that some other sets do. I can listen to it for hours without getting tired.
3-Style and construction: DT880 is beautiful set. like most other German designs, style is defined by simple lines and geometrey. Yet, the bold style has no "retro" look. No cheap plastic or flimsy supports or joints is used in its construction. Very functional for a user who doesn't require very much mobility.
I highly recomend this product to music enthusiasts. Happy listening and hearing what you've missed
"Good headphones with amp" I can't stress enough that you absolutely SHOULD NOT buy these phones if you will not use them on an amp or a powered source. They DO NOT sound good out of a laptop or portable player w/out an amp. They are 250 ohm impedance phones--most portable player phones are under 30 ohm impedance.
That being said, I bought an amp with them, and they sound pretty good! They have great clarity, and the bass sounds good but I can tell they take more power than my Bithead can give to reach really low bass response. I think my old Grado SR60s sound better, and are cheaper, but I actually prefer these headphones.
Simply put, they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. Plus they cancel some noise, so they're great for a coffee shop with a blender in the background. I'm pleased with my purchase, but there are other headphones that sound better.
"Very Good Headphones" I bought thses to replace a different pair that broke. These have a springsteel band across ythe top and don't fold thus there are no real weak points in the construction. They have excellent sound quality, but since I'm not a music expert and primarily listen to the radio while I'm working all day long, they have too good of a sound quality. With my previous headphones, I never noticed the background noise and with these new ones I notice very subtle static that is typical for radio broadcasts. I guess what I needed were cheap headphones for radio listening and nice ones for digital music.
"good it came with a mistake not 3 stars but 1 star" I bought a headphone and you "Amazon" put the quantity down as 3, i guess i accidentally clicked it but the point was that it was hard to find the number of quantity was or when i really knew how many times i've clicked on the button. so i ended up having to pay for 3 headphones for 600 dollars and i didnt notice until they arrived at my door step.

What our customer's say!
"Amazon made a Mistake !", All reviews of different beyerdynamic headphones are mixed together. Dt990 dt770 etc... What the Hell!
Can amazon have each review under the right headphone?
"Well worth even the premium price", After using these headphones for 2+ years, it's hard to go back to anything with lesser sound quality. The main flaw is that they don't work well for portable audio. Even if you're comfortable wearing massive headspeakers in public, your audio player probably won't pump out the volume you need to drown out traffic or the subway. Also, the open design will let everyone hear a little of what you're listening to.
However, for private home listening, these are the best. They are large in size but relatively lightweight. Sometimes I put them on and keep them on long after the music tracks are over just because the soft earpads are so warm and comfortable. Recently, I've used these primarily to play games with my 360, and were it not for the subtle weight around my ears, I forget that I'm not using a home theater system that I used to have before moving to a smaller apartment.
"great headphone", I bought this amazing headphone less than [...] in Amazon. Just the half price if you buy it in China. Now I have DT880 and HD580 worked for me both in office and home. The sound is great. Unlike HD580, the sound is detailed while not flavored. It is suitable to listen classic music and watch movie. A natural born for monitor sound. By the way, the Al-alloy frame looks good. Good craftmanship brings a good look. I don't like in-ear headphones. You should try Sennheiser, Beyer, Grado, AKG and ATH. This DT880, former flagship of Beyer, has a huge fame. Finally,an amp should be used to perform a better sound.
"Beyerdynamic DT 880 - Best headphones ever", The Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones are awesome. They are sturdy, VERY comfortable and have exceptional sound quality. I was a bit hesitant to lay down the money for these headphones but I had tried a friend's pair of 770's and knew these had to be at least that good. I listen to music and sound almost all day at work through these headphones and the 880's allow the best comfort in ANY headphones I have tried, and I have tried many.
If you value high quality sound reproduction and comfort, look no further. You will enjoy these headphones.
"Great Cans", This is my first set of high quality headphones - I have used a pretty nice pair of Koss headphones since about 1998 - and I'm smitten with them. They do indeed need sometime to warm up, as they're a little bright right out of the box, but the clarity is unmistakable. I am able to hear subtleties and nuances in songs that I couldn't with other headphones (e.g., the beginning of 'Closer' - NIN, quiet licks on the album 'Dark Side of the Moon' - Pink Floyd, and the breathing and sounds of Janos Starker hitting the fingerboard in 'Bach's Cello Suite No1 in G mjr, etc.) I can't take them off. Make sure you have something to drive them with though (check out eb@y). The preamp for my computer speakers (Klipsch) is sufficient.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Excellent, analytical, articulate", You will definitely hear "detail" with the DT-770s -- they articulate every tiny detail of the source material. This can be good or bad, but for me it has opened up a lot of new and enjoyable aspects of my music collection.
They definitely need "breaking in," although I would suggest simply running your iPod or similar overnight into these 'phones for a couple of weeks. I'm not sure if using "pink noise" is any better.
I use these alongside Audio-Technica ATH-M50s and AKG K240Ms (the older Mk. I model), and, though I like all three, the DT-770s are incredibly detailed and engaging -- while I would compare between all three when doing critical mastering chores.
"beyerdynamic dt880", I am so pleased with these headphones. I haven't auditioned the more expensive "audiophile class" headphones, but I doubt my ears could detect the difference. But then again, these may be as good as it gets, at least for the price. My primary genre is classical music, and I'm trying to compose this review as I'm listening to Brahm's 4th. Very difficult.
I'm sure what one hears depends in large part on the equipment up front. I'm listening through a thoroughly antique CD changer (SONY CDP-C50). Nevertheless, I'm just so happy with these cans!
"some of the best headphones on the market", clearest highs i've heard in a pair of cans; full sound with well-tuned bass (maybe not for hip-hop and electronica bass-lovers, though); SUPER comfortable; classic studio style.
however, be warned - works just alright straight out of an ipod or cd player, but can be a battery hog and really only does its best work when properly amplified, even with something as simple as a CMoy "Altoids-tin" op-amp - this really evens out the sound and make everything seems so much more present, and usually a little less dry, too.
"Nearly perfect for recording, mixing, and monitoring", I was recently in the market for a new set of headphones and my audition process was lengthy and borderline obsessive. The result was a pretty good picture of what's out there for a reasonable ($600 or less) price. After listening to Sennheisers, Grados, AKGs, Etymotics, and Beyer, I came to the conclusion that the Beyer DT770s are nearly perfect for recording, monitoring, and mixing. I didn't get a chance to demo the DT880s, which some people rank amongst the very finest transducers in the world, but I'm sure they're even better.
The AKG 240s are popular with the home studio/bedroom producer crowd (yeah, I too have a pair laying around) and since the 240s and DT770s are in the same general price range, I'll compare them most thoroughly. I've said this elsewhere, but my general feels are, Grados are best for low-power devices (e.g. iPods, Walkmans), Sennheisers are amongst the best for audiophilic listening, and Etymotics (and now Shures) are best for revealing every minute detail of a sound. Those opinions are based on owning and living with many pairs for a long time.
So, where do Beyers fit in? They're awesome for anyone who wants a sealed headphone for noise isolation. They don't reduce noise to the extent that a canalphone like the Etymotics will, but then again, some people prefer not to stick tiny audio transducers way into their ears. Plus, sharing is not a problem. The DT770s will provide reasonable isolation even in noisy environments. They're a great choice for monitoring with drums. As a percussionist, my problem was always finding a headphone that cut out enough of my playing so that I didn't have to blast my eardrums every time I played with a click track.
I tried the AKG 240s in these types of situations, but they fit substantially looser and a fair amount of noise leaks in. The fit is also a problem when you need to move. The Beyers firmly grip your head. There's not a lot of pressure, but at the same time, you can shake your head around and they won't move. They AKGs were always fatiguing after an hour or so, but the Beyers were so comfortable that I could all but forget I was wearing them.
Sonically, the Beyers are impressive. My AKGs always seemed light on bass. I'm not a bass fanatic, but when there is heavy bass, the headphones should translate it without scaling it back. The DT770s were appropriately punchy when it was called for, and subtle, but present the rest of the time. I never felt like the bass had a distinct roll off in the audible frequency range. With a lot of headphones, once you get below 60Hz, the bass power reduces noticeably, but not so much with the Beyers.
The midrange was quite smooth and blended seamlessly with the very precise highs. I wouldn't go so far as to call them crystalline, but they were very detailed and accurately reproduced the higher frequencies that get lopped off by lesser headphones. Overall, the sound was slightly more aggressive than with my Sennheiser HD600s. I think the HD600s are better if you just want to listen for pleasure, but when you're in the studio, you need something up-front and energized.
When I heard the DT770s, I was listening through a Digidesign interface, which had a dedicated headphone amplifier. This is critical, because without proper amplification, these headphones are perfectly capable of sounding dull and lifeless with anemic bass and little dynamic range. They're not going to work with your iPod unless you add a portable headphone amp. Similarly, they'll play reasonably loud out of your computer, but the precision and dynamic range won't be there. The DT770s are rated at 250 ohms making them sufficiently high to require more voltage than your portable devices can deliver. It's not like they'll make an ugly sound running directly out of your iPod - just that with extra power, they really become something special.
Overall, I highly recommend the DT770s to anyone looking to set up a home studio. They're analytical enough to reveal hidden details, but they still sound pleasing and won't fatigue your ears, even after long sessions. If you're wanting to listen directly from a portable device, the Grado SR60s will work much better. If you're wanting to listen for pleasure, I think the very high end Sennheisers are a little more musical. However, for all your recording/mixing/monitoring tasks, the Beyers are great. I highly recommend them
"Great headphones", The DT 880 headphones are great. The sound is transparent and the treble is quite open. The sound stage does not feel congested at all. The bass can go deep and I think it might have a little too much bass. The mid range feels slightly recessed, but I managed to get use to after the first two or three hours of use. These headphones require quite a bit of juice before they reach their potential. I suggest matching these headphones with a dedicated quality headphone amp.
