Others say...
"Great Drive, Very, Very, Very Quiet" I just purchased this drive and I cannot understand the reports that this drive is noisy. I think the noise must come from the enclosure vibrating and not from the drive.
It is so quiet I had to check to be sure it was powered up. I had to listen very carefully to even hear this drive during head seeks.
The DisWizard software, which is included, makes disk management and cloning the system so simple.
For the price, you cannot find a better hard drive!
"major let-down" I purchased this drive in September '08 and it crashed less than two months later. No warning signs--drive just failed. I was shocked because the Seagate name was highly recommended by a friend. Sure, the drive had an extra-long warranty and sure this could happen with any brand, but still a major pain in the ### dealing wih the aftermath. Fortunately I had all of my info backed up on an external HD. Less than two months out of this drive is ridiculous, after all, this is not a no-name company. Strangely enough, the drive that failed before this one was a Maxtor (which is also manfactured by Seagate). Seagate's customer service was not very helpful.
"Great high capacity, high speed SATA drive" I needed a second drive for my workstation, and it was pretty much a choice between Western Digital and Seagate. This one seemed the best in terms of value and size. I may be building an external storage array in the near future, and I'll probably buy this drive again.
"Good but noisy" I installed this drive three weeks ago and so far so good. The software provided by Seagate is good but didn't help me with transferring my system from my old drive to the new drive. The software does not support dynamic disks.
The drive is a bit noisy, but not enough to bother this guy. The drive comes with a 5 year warranty, something the competition doesn't come close to. This is an excellent drive for storing your movies and mp3 files.
"5 stars but be careful that you get what you paid for" Bought four of these to use in a RAID. All four of the boxes had PN: 98D648 - 550 on the box. When I installed one of the drives it was smaller than the others. PN on smaller drive's label was 98J146 - 308 and it was called a Barracuda 7200.10. Larger drives were Barracuda 7200.11 9BX154 - 303 on the drive label. Returned it and will check the replacement when it arrives.
7/3/08 Received replacement drive and it was Barracuda 7200.11 9BX154 - 303.

What our customer's say!
"Good replacement hard disk", Got this hard disk for inventory next time a customer has a crash. I've tried it out and it works.
"Worked Great", I installed this using a fresh copy of Vista. It was recognized and formated with ease. Very simple install. It is quiet and I haven't had any issues.
"Great Product - Easy Installation", I have purchased two of these now - I can't say enough. They are easy to install as both a backup drive and a fresh build. Fast as lightning and lots of room!
"Crashed disk", One month later, or actually only about 3 weeks, and this brand-new disk has already crashed !!! What more need I say ??? Will try a disk from Maxtor next
"The warrantee, the warrantee, the warrantee", Seagate stands behind this product with a 5 year warrantee. I've tried all the brands over the years, both IDE, SATA and SCSI, and nobody makes failure proof disk drives. I've sent back drives to everyone. SCSI will last you much longer with better performance, but at a much higher price point. I have six of these in various machines and they're quite satisfactory. You will probably be looking at 1TB models after summer 2008, but there are some heat and noise issues some report with those units. These are satisfactory in that regard. SATA is an improvement in some respects, but not hugely different in performance from IDE on most machines.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Not bad for the price...", I got one of these drives, for about 30 bucks cheaper than Amazon has it here, and it is a bit loud, but other than that, not a single problem at all. In fact, I have never really had a problem with any Seagate items that I have bought and always they are a decent price. I would recommend this and reading the reviews of other people saying that their's failed, they is too bad. I am sure that they are not the most amazing or consistent company on the planet and that is too bad for the customers that got bum hard drives, but in my experience, I have not had an issue at all.
"A little more effort than expected, but works.", I installed the Seagate 500Gb SATA using Windows XP Pro x64. Installing the hardware was easy enough as all cables were included. The XP installer didn't recognize the drive, so I added an older 80Gb ATA drive and installed XP on that. From there, I ran the Seagate installer disc, and voila, the Seagate drive showed up. I'm still putting my new system through its paces, so we'll see how it fares as I add software.
"Very Very LOUD", I can't believe how loud this drive is. It's very difficult to concentrate on editing with this thing screaming after every thing I do. Opening a browser or simply exploring the C drive is deafening. Now some applications are freezing. I'm returning this.
"Good while it works", Head crash at nine months. Hard drive had four fans to keep it cool, so was operating just above room temperature. Zero shocks to the drive (unless they occurred in shipping before I got it, of course). I wonder if these are designed based on Maxtor mechanisms (some of which were prone to heads breaking off due to a design flaw). Either way, my trust in Seagate drives just went way down....
It sounded like low frequency hum and high frequency whine as the head etched a groove in the media. By the time the dd to clone the drive to a spare was finished, the drive was completely unreadable (including the parts that I'd already read).
"lots of room", I had not upgraded my hard drive in a long time now. got this one and all i can say is wow. loads of room to spare. like some of the other reviews i have read it is a little loud. but if i had it to do again it would be a no brainer i would buy this one again.
