What our customer's say!
"This game is a triple threat: addictive, fun, and full of variety!", This is such an incredible game, and packed to the gills with fun. Flying through space is blissful, the planetary battles are gripping, the trading is a treat, and I've run out of adjectives for the text adventures and arcade shooter sections.
This is one of the few games I've played that I did not want to end - there are so many things to do, it's like 5 games in one. If you were bored stiff by Galactic Civ, buy this instead.
Any complaints? Some of the translations are a bit rough, but that just adds to the "alien" flavor of the game.
"How do games like this go unnoticed?", I bought this game off a clearance rack at a closeout store for four dollars. It sat on my shelf for a while so I could finish some other things, and I was hesitant to install it after reading so many accounts of "StarForce copy protection" wreaking havoc on their computers. Honestly, I think alot of geniuses installed the game and forgot to put the play disc (disc 1) back in the drive. I've had no problem with it whatsoever.
Alot of the other reviewers have already gone into explicit detail about what makes this game so great... I felt the need to write a review because I beat everything and anything the game has to offer and don't know what to do with myself for the moment now that I can't get anything more out of it. It's really that good, and that addictive. Translation, presentation, implementation is all nearly flawless, now I hunt for any "Cinemaware Marquee" products I can get my hands on. My computer isn't so great, so it was very satisfying to play a recent game (2006) that forgoes graphics that are out of the reach of my system and puts so much attention into the gameplay, strategy, and AI. Seriously, the NPC's can do anything you can do, short of exploring new planets and black holes. I woke my roommates up swearing because another Ranger had gotten to a planet that received a shiny new prototype ship I had researched on the game's "planetary search function", saved up for game weeks (real life days), and had driven through four star systems to buy... he got there one day before me and passed by me with it as I approached the space-dock. This sort of reaction may sound like I wasn't enjoying myself, but I was mostly just floored by the fact that people can and do make products like this.
Word of advice to players: do yourself a favor and play on Easy, or at least use the mercifully planned custom difficulty to tweak some of the money and enemy strength settings. Unless you like waking up your roommates with swearing, as I noted above. While I was learning the ropes on Normal the Dominators were conquering system after system, killing many of my fellow rangers. After buying the best gear available at the time and spending thousands of credits to convince a planetary government to dispatch a battle fleet, I charged into an occupied system (just far enough behind to not get shot first!) and barely made a dent before all my allies were crushed and I had to jump back to where I came from... now needlessly short of alot of cash, having had no time to safely collect floating loot from fallen enemies and allies (Dominators, aware of your intentions to collect their superior technology, have a nasty habit of destroying any and all space debris they fly by, leaving you with the options of filling your airlock in the heat of combat or killing them all and cleaning up afterwards) and with a hefty repair bill to boot. Don't be ashamed to run from every ship you see, pirate or otherwise, while you make a lot of merchant shipments and save up for your days of glory, and make good use of the "search function" to keep an eye out as new technology hits the market.
I don't mean to write a strategy guide as part of my review, but explaining circumstances like this should truly inform you of just how different your playing experience will be. The best I can explain is... Grand Theft Auto (in its 2D roots and freeplay glory)+ Strategy RPG + Space.
As soon as I finish typing and click submit, I'm going to install Space Rangers 1 (graciously included in the retail box, a hell of a bargain for four dollars). Hats off to a handful of small companies with a truck-ful of big ideas.
"Star Force protected despite Bruce's comment", I purchased the game based on Bruce's assertion that Starforce had been removed. I don't know how he got a copy that didn't include Starforce but the version just delivered by Amazon does include it.
Hopefully Amazon will accept the return.
"Holy Spacemonkeys!", Space Rangers 2 is pure fun. It reminds me of an old game named Privateer that ran on DOS. You run around the galaxy in your spaceship fighting, trading, doing small missions and buying upgrades for your ship. You can play the game as a fighter, merchant or pirate. Part of the game includes a StarCraft like element where you fight in a real-time strategy mode, but for those who don't like that kind of action you can skip those missions entirely. You start off as a weakling and build up as the game goes on acquiring rank, skill, money and reputation. You can also hire other rangers to work under your direction as you build skill so that when you get into battles you bring your entire "entourage" with you.
The game is highly addictive and you will find yourself engrossed for hours (or days) at a time. The Space Rangers 2 development team has done a great job of creating a totally unique genre with this game. If you're into flashy graphical games with weak story lines and marginal game play development this title is not for you.
"Awesome Game!!!!", This game is like StarshipTrader, a web game that I played online once, but with better graphics and more activities.
Oh, yeah ... is StarForce that bad? To the people who purchased this game: Have any of you had bad experience with the version of StarForce that was included with Space Rangers 2?
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy...
"fun unique game ", This is a gem of a game. high quality all around.
a couple of points
-this version of the game is v1.3 same as UK version (DVD) although the disk says v1.0 (its an oversight)
-ignore all the starforce rants. starforce may have been problematic several years ago, but I had no troubles at all with the newer versions of starforce.
"IT DOMINATES THE DOMINATORS", i purchased this game a week ago and i love it. the space traveling and arcade battles are also and yet sort of 3d. when you go to govermnent buildings the graphics are sooo realistic [PROS] very fun game provides hours of enjoyable gameplay, lots of good items to buy sell and trade, many skills to develop and all 5 races are great and have a variety of looks to choose from, plenty of upgradable, customizable ships and customizable equipment, many customizable, upgradable weapons and you can make squads to follow you and team up with others, quick load times, a superb mixture of gaming genres, classes have unique abilities, you can become a threat to the coalition and make deals with dominators& steal cargos plus planetary battles are fun, includes the first space rangers game in english which rocks, great 108 page manual and reference card i like the poster and great quests. u can get arrested and win money in fist fights and bug races.many galaxies, planets, starsystems&stations and probes rock same with moduels. hundreds of AI and the game evolves itself, do anything you want [CONS] uhhhh.... you won't want to leave the computer and you'll go crazy about endless possibilties. get it its like a free star wars galaxies or eve only $30 and has been named one of the best games of the year so go get it because i want to stop typing and go play RISE OF THE DOMINATORS!!!
"Best game since Fallout 2!", Rarely do I give 5 stars in both categories!!! In fact, I've critiqued so many PC games negatively on Amazon, that I felt obligated to give credit where it's due.
I've been a gamer since the C-64 days and I have a PC game collection that dates back to the late 80's. Since I've played dozens of RPG/Stragegy games I'm qualified to say that this is one of the best PC games of all time. Probably the best since Fallout 2. I've heard comparisons between Star Control 2 and this game before I bought it, however I wouldn't have ever believed that these comparisons could be accurate. I was completely stunned! The game is highly engaging, addictive and you shouldn't play it at night unless you want to be up until 5 AM!
While this is less of a RPG than Star Control 2, it does have the same "feel" to it in both the interface and plot. You can control the building and movement of your ship as you could in SC2. You can trade, take on quests (in TEXT format, but crafted so well you won't care), and fight on the ground (Mech Commander style) or in space. It seems that the designers of this game have taken the best elements from almost every significant PC game since Zork.
However, the thing that makes this game unique from SC 2 is its very open-ended structure and the fact that there's a variety of different ways to enjoy it. The game can go on for several weeks before you defeat the final opponents and, if you're a hard-core gamer, you probably wont want to end anyway until you've explored every last nook and cranny of the huge (HUGE Gigantic Tremendous)galaxy that these game designers have invented.
Anyway, this game is truly a work of art. The text quests are truly impresive I also haved to warn people that I think it's of Russian (or Balkan) design. Sometimes the translation of the text quests is sloppy, but never sloppy enough to affect the completion of the quests. I suppose that the lame movie at the beginning will also fluster some potential players. My advice is to skip the opening movie and go straight for the game. Make sure to have plenty late-night snacks.
I want Star Rangers 3 now badly, however, I wonder if the world has a high enough IQ for a game like that?
"a surprisingly deep and engrossing space-oriented action/strategy game. ", While it takes a little while to understand all the ins and outs of gameplay, the basic gist is that you're a Space Ranger, and your ultimate goal is to rid the galaxy of a race of invading cyborgs. Along the way, you might get caught up in a ground-based robotic assault mission, with first person shooter aspects, or an old timey text adventure, complete with logic puzzles, or even arcade style shoot-em-up action inside the depths of a black hole.
You choose your race (which will affect how other races treat you) and your occupation -- from mercenary to merchant to pirate. There are hundreds of other computer-controlled ships in the galaxy, all with their own agenda, who you can either compete for space debris, enlist as your underlings, or extort or kill. It's almost like a MMO without the obnoxious 12 year olds or monthly fees.
It's in the vein of Civilization, Warcraft, or Alpha Centauri, but I'm thinking that the variations and personality it has makes it better than those three. And at a bargain price of less than $30 (with the bonus of the first Space Rangers game included ... which I haven't even booted), you really can't go wrong.
(One downside -- the game is protected with the controversial Star Force copy protection program. I haven't noticed any of the negatives I've heard about this program, but it bears acknowledging before you try and buy it.)
"Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators= "diamond in the rough." ", To begin with, if you consider video games with less than stellar graphics or you are illiterate, don't bother to read on ........ .............. ..............................
For the rest of you out there this is perhaps one of the best games I have played in a long time. It has everything that we as strategy gamers love. The breadth and magnitude of this game is overwhelming. You have so many options for so many varied adventures that it is truly amazing.
I have played many games. I am a fan of games like Sim City 4, Tropico, BF2, Rome Total War, Freelancer, Call of Duty, Halo, Guild Wars, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires etc. Compared to all of these games however Space Rangers 2: The Rise of the Dominators has virtually all of these games wrapped up within. And all of this for $30!
Those with less than suped up machines will be able to load this game up and play, because the graphics surely are nothing to write home about, but they serve their own purpose (in fact I enjoy the realistic renderings of the various planets).
I have searched so long to find a game like this. There is no cookie cutter way to play, you just jump in your ship, fight when you want to fight, run when you want to run, trade, sell, buy, build. There is so much to do 100+ planets to travel to. The mini-games are whole games in and of themselves. Granted some of these are solely question/answer text games, but they make you think. My wife had to do some complex algebra for me to answer a question correctly.
If you like numbers this game is for you. Those Russians know what they are doing when it comes to gameplay.
GET THIS GAME! It is hard to figure out at first, the learning curve is a little steep, but it is well worth it. I am married with three children, getting ready to move to Texas and start a new career, but I can't put this game down or stop thinking how to play my next turn. The game is turn based, but the mechanics make it very easy to deal with (typically I am not a fan of turn-based games).
There are so many nuggets of humor in this game, it makes you want to read all of the text. I can't fully sum up how fun this game is, you need to just go out and purchase it and play it. If you are itching to go to Best Buy, Circuit City, or here on Amazon and pick up a new fun computer game, get Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators. It is a goofy title, but it only scrapes at the surface of a very deep game.
Pros: Money, trade, economic system that is very realistic, faster than normal load times, ZERO technical issues (thus far), very stable, absolutely fun, low tech specs required, multiple games in one, $30!, hilarious, makes you actually use your brain, easy saves, no checkpoints, no cookie cutter game play, non-linear.
Cons: Low res graphics (makes it faster though), inadequate (yet heavy) manual (describes some stuff very well, but leaves other stuff out entirely), some grammatical/spelling errors, as if I don't have any in this review (but there is a butt-load of text so they actually did very well for being Russian), the title (pretty nit picky).
Overall: You are not a fan of PC gaming if you do not own this title. Don't rip it off either. We need to let the industry know that they need to put out more quality games such as this, rather than some of the mind-numbing, time wasting, hard-drive filling, crud that they have been putting out.
