"HDV Capture Should Not Be on the Feature List" I own an HDV camcorder. I want to edit in HDV and I've used Premiere Pro 1.5 to do it, however the two-step import process (including a potentially lossy conversion) frustrated me.
Happy with the workflow and features of Premiere Pro, I tried the trial download of 2.0 first. For one thing, it refused under any circumstances to recognize my HDR-FX1 camcorder (which is on its compatibility list) in HDV mode (despite appropriate iLink conversion and HDV VCR settings). Freeware applications like CapDVHS worked fine, so I finally gave up after trying Premiere Pro 2.0 on two machines. (Nevermind the trouble I had with the trial expiring on the same day I installed it.)
After trying Adobe Premiere 2.0, Avid Liquid, and Sony Vegas 7.0 it was (surprise) the Sony software that successfully captured, edited, and rendered the HDV project I am working on.
Premiere simply shouldn't have "Native HDV Editing" as a feature until they perform at least as well as the other major players in HDV editing.
"Premiere 2.0 continues the steps into the Real world of editing" I dont know what the rest of you all are talking about - but this is a great product. Ive been with Premiere since version 5.0 - and 1.5 was the Big leap to real editing - and 2.0 is a fantastic continuation of that improvement. I think alot of hte people complaining about the jerky/unstable situations probably dont have a newish computer to match the advanced features of 2.0. Im running this on a P4 2.8ghz, 1.5gig ram, fast harddrive system wtih XPSP2, and it runs AWESOME - it totally keeps up with everythign i throw at it. Im sure if i had a Dualcore it would even be quicker. Im impressed with how fast the exporting to AVI files are and its only crashed on me maybe ONCE since ive been using it (over 3 monthes). MAJOR upgrades are multi-cam editing, HDV capability, Flash movie export, direct dvd creation (though i havnt used that yet) and adobe clip notes which is a Huge timesaver. Also the interface is Much better in my opinion, just takes a little while to get used to. I just completed a major, high pressure edit job and P2.0 kept up with me all the way - and even surprised me with features i didnt know it had. Main advise, be sure you have a Decent system and be willing to learn abit of a different interface, it doesnt take long to learn the differences, and eventually (at least for me) they end up being better. I think the $199 upgrade from 1.5 is a Very fair price, and if i had to buy the whole $800 version, and didnt Have any editing software id do it in a flash.
"Excellent Program" I upgraded from Premiere 6.5 and it was woth every penny. I can not say enough good things about Premiere Pro 2.0. The quality of the DVD's it produces is of much higher quality than Premiere 6.5 and Pro 2.0 is very easy to work with. The scene detection option during capture was worth the upgrade in itself. DVD menu's are easy to create and produce outstanding professional results.
Highly recommended!
"Hated it" I don't even know where to begin. This was probably the most un-user friendly piece of software I've ever used. The "training" dvds that came with the software are crap. I guess the product wasn't at all what I was expecting. Very disappointed.
"Unacceptable" I used to be a big fan of Adobe, but Premiere just took 12 hours to render a 30 minute movie, stalled three frames before finishing, and finally left me with a jerky, low quality version of the masterpiece I'd created. I spent weeks working on my baby, and Premiere gave me an abortion. Adobe's customer support representative wanted to charge me forty dollars PER QUESTION to figure out what was going wrong. Do you really want to spend nearly 800 dollars on this?

What our customer's say!
"Fantastic", I like the chap below do not understand the bad reviews. Until I get my new machine on Monday I have been using my laptop which is fairly good spec, but by no means incredibly fast and Premeire runs quickly and reliably.
Exporting videos (5 minute video) takes 4-5 minutes, I can edit quickly in realtime with no problems at all.
When I get my new machine I am sure it will run even better. Well done Adobe.
People with problems worth making sure all the settings / codecs are correct, both of which could cause performance problems.
"Cut", Adobe Premiere is far from the most advanced non-linear video editing package you can get however let me make this one comment.
- Editing is all about cutting and not fancy effects. The strength of the project is what is in front of and behind the camera not fancy effects.
I would never recommend using any of the effects on any of the non-linear video editing packages anyway. Get dedicated effects packages if you really want to do your special effects well.
In short Adobe Premiere is the BEST cutting software and the EASIEST to use. The learning curve is slightly steep but you will be cutting your footage within a day or two with this one.
An editor cuts and arranges media. Adobe Premiere does that perfectly. I recommend this like no other for the price but if you are looking for pro packages then go elsewhere and be prepared to pay five figures with extra hardware. If you want special FX this has some but no pro uses these effects tool. Premiere is a first class cutting tool. Go to Discreet products for FX.
"Warning: Steep Requirements!", Even though you own a fairly recent computer, if you don't have 64bit processing and at least 2.5 gig of memory in your computer, Premiere cannot be used to its greatest extent. Also be sure to have plenty of hard disk space available for virtual ram (100 gig or more)-If you don't, Premiere will crash.
I used to have numerous problems with Adobe programs but after upgrading hardware, it seems to me that their programs have very steep requirements. What do you expect from HD?
Don't read the box requirements. If you are serious about video editing, you need to invest in a better machine that can handle Premiere Pro 2.0 otherwise, just stick with ulead.
"Adobe Premiere Pro", There are a few minor changes that I'm not completely sure about that were applied to the system that have taken some time to adjust to, but it is still a terrific program that is powerful and able to do everything I need it to be able to do.
"I don't get the bad reviews, unless....", I don't get the bad reviews, unless these users are(no offense): 1. working for the competition 2. have hardware shortcomings 3. are not using the program correctly.
I used it right out of the box and was able to capture from my sony hdr-hc3 hd cam, even though it is not listed as compatible. I created a 5 minute flick in no time, had very good real time viewing of the unrendered product, and rendered it in about 20-30 minutes. I watched it on an 8' wide hd projection and it was perfect. All of the video correction I did was really an improvement to my cloudy day footage. This has been the easiest install, first-time use, hardware compatibility experience I have ever had. Check the adobe Premiere user forumn and all of your questions will be answered. I posted today and got a response and an answer in about 5 minutes. I also have After Effects, Photoshop, and pagemaker and have been happy with all for years dating back to 1990. I upgraded from Premiere 6.5, which I haven't used for years. The improvements are plentiful and very satisfying. If you can swing it, spring for the productivity bundle. The programs really work well together.

"Great disapontment", I figured that for this price the improvements would be huge, but no. What did they do besides the new look of the interface, some new filters and including HDV? Rendering time is still really slow, they relly screwed up the Adobe Titler, trimimg or cutting large files takes really long and loading and saving takes forever. I've been using Premiere since version 6.0 and I thought that by now Premiere would be competing in the same plane as Final Cut. I just upgraded from Premiere Pro 1.5 and it was worthless.
"Premiere Pro 2 - good but not good enough", I bought Premiere Pro 2 just before discovering Avid Liquid 7 which works much better and faster, has more features and is very easy to learn.
I was extremely disappointed that Prem Pro 2 does not write dual-layer DVDs. I knew this when I bought it but it still should be able to write DL discs. Dual-layer isn't such a new technology that Premiere can't include it. Rendering is still slow as with previous versions even though preview is realtime or close to realtime. Premiere still does not seem to take advantage of today's extremely fast graphics processors included on most video cards. Avid Liquid 7 uses the graphics processor instead of the CPU for much of the rendering. Avid Liquid 7 previews realtime and also renders extremely quickly compared to Premiere Pro 2. The difference is night and day.
All in all, I wish I had not purchased Premiere Pro 2. It's a good product but it's not good enough when compared to Avid Liquid 7.
"It is way too unstable", I hate this program for being so expensive and has so many bugs in it. It worked ok for the first couple of videos then it automaticly changed my default settings to be compatable with some sort of 5.1 soundboard that this computer doesnt even have.
Then the movies take long enough to render and save anyway, but once there done, sound had disapered, sometimes there was no video in areas, it spent an hour rendering something then froze on 98% complete that the exact same one before it i did took about 10 minutes, I trimmed the video and it took longer? how does that figure? (no i didnt change any settings) and i specificly chose a certain frame size (320x240) and the stupid thing saved it as (720x830) if i select a frame size, i want it that size. Plus, you cant restart it to factory settings. You go to the REPAIR options and it prompts you that you have the wrong instalation disc, it requires a disc 1 that never came with the program... and reinstaling it doesnt do anything because it remembers the settings and I have no idea where the hell it saved those files to to go an erase them, they dont come up when you search for folders and files, all you can delete is the templates youve made that you dont need to save every time you make one of these things but it does it anyway.
and I'm sick to death of having to get online and search sites on how to fix these problems and bugs every time i close the thing or it screws up and I have to restart everything because ADOBE have absolutly NOTHING on errors or bugs in the help menu. They just treat it like this program is flawless, well its not, and its a huge rip off for a program that i wouldnt even give the honor of being labled a BETA version.... i see theres an update for another few hundred bucks, it probbly contains the files to help fix the problems that shouldnt have been there in the first place a program so outragously priced at.
If this is supposed to be the best video editing software on the PC then I'd hate to see what the rest of them do.
