"Be sure of what you have..."
I'm really really upset at this purchase. The unit itself is fine, I like the design, weight and feel. BUT not with all Kensington tips. I have a Dell laptop that uses an N19 tip. Guess what? It doesn't fit. There is an extra grove in that tip that prevents it from attaching properly.

Kensington should notify customers about this.

I followed up with Kensington directly. Their response is, "Thank you for contacting Kensington Technical Support. I understand your concern.
I am sorry for the inconvenience caused. However, we will forward your case to our porduct Design Team. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.

In the meantime, I've trashed the packinging and ditched the receipt, can't even send it back to Amazon... Wait, I know, I'll buy a new laptop with a power supply that fits! :/

"Compact, but a little heavy"
It looks like Kensington put a lot of thought into this product, which is good to see. The cable itself is a flat ribbon cable (to facilitate winding), and of the 5 conductors in the cable, the two that carry the most current are wider than the others (lower resistance, less wasted power, and less likely to fail). The winder folds over so that the knob doesn't protrude and get snagged on things. The winder also has a ratcheting mechanism (don't worry, it doesn't click) so that you can't accidentally "unwind". I'm sure this is done to save the cable from getting loose inside the winder and causing problems. I'm sure most of you have experienced this problem with long, hand wound tape measures.

The cable with the winder is a few feet shorter than the standard cable that comes with the Kensington system, but the winder is very nice. It is much easier to wind up the cable than to have to fold up and wrap the standard cable. I'm glad Kensington went with a shorter cable length on this product. I've never had to use all 10' of the standard cable.

The winder looks and feels well-built, but I wouldn't abuse it. The winder also adds a little weight. As a result, this winding cable is heavier than the longer cable included with the charger. If weight is your primary concern, stick with the cable your system came with. I bought this because it's more compact and easier to manage, so I'm happy with my purchase. I don't mind hauling another ounce or two, given that I'm already saving so much weight by carrying one charger instead of 4.

"Missing a catch"
As others have said the reel has no catch to hold it in any wind position. The ends stick in the reel only slightly when full wound. If you hold the reel by a connector the reel will always drop to the floor unwinding. There is no resistance on the spool. This causes two problems. It partially unwinds when packed and the reel drops to the floor when you are holding the connectors to insert them in your PC and wall jack. The reel is also much heavier than a similar length of CAT5 cable.

The handle folds and would appear to lock the reel but it does not. As the handle folds it completely disengages from the reel. I can think of several ways Kensington could have solved these problem, like adding a little friction or a spring to the reel, adding a clamp on one or both cable guides, shaping the guides to hold the ends snuggly when fully retracted, etc.

It is also surprisingly difficult to hold when winding. The cable spools up higher on the open edges of the reel than the side panels so you can't hold it the normal way. The crank runs very close to one side panel or it disengages from the reel, so you have to hold it by the opposite side panel. The one edge you can hold is thin and slippery.

Pretty much a terrible all around design.

"Great"
This saves a LOT of hassle on the go...easy and quick to pack. Works great and is light. Measures about 3 inches across. The reel does not lock however (contrary to the previous review) so if it dangles off the edge of a table the whole cable unreels, but this is still a great on-the-go cable.

"Nice idea, poorly executed"
This cable winder is one of the main reason I went with the Kensington adapter. It's a great idea, but unfortunately it is made so cheaply that after less than a couple of months it just doesn't work anymore as the mechanism that winds the cable back is shot.

What our customer's say!

"Great for travel", This item is just as advertised. I have had the Kensington air/auto/ac charger for a little over a year and have used it extensivly. Recently the cord that plugeed into my laptop developed a short from rolling it up for travel. I was really glad to see this winder with the replacement cord. It works perfectly. The flat cord and wind up design eliminates the problem of winding the cord for packing. It also takes up less space as it winds up tighter than you woulld dare roll the standard cord. I highly recommend it.Kensington 33347 Travel Cable Winder for Kensington Power Adapters

"Works okay", The winder is sort of bulky, so this didn't turn out to be the weight and space saver that I was hoping for

"Does Not Work with 120W Ultra Portable Power Adapter ", Key Point: This retractable cable does NOT work with K33197 120W Auto/Air Ultra Portable Notebook PC Power Adapter with which it is featured on Amazon.

Reason: The tips have small tabs on top and bottom that fit into groves on the cable ends. On the retractable cable, the ends lack this grove on the bottom, preventing connection.

Pros: Compact size and light weight. I recommend it to anyone that travels with size and weight constraints. Just be ready to return it if the the tips don't work with your Kennsington power adaptor model.

Major disappointment with Amazon for combining incompatable products.

"Not compatible with 'B' tips?!?!?!?!?", This is rediculous!!! I purchased the travel winder along with the Power Adapter (K33197). So far, the power adapter works as advertised and it's very convenient. It included 11 various tips, all labeled "N2B", "N30B", etc. Well, apparently NONE of the 'B' tips work with the travel winder!!! There's a top and bottom groove on the tips but the travel winder only has grooves on one side.

I called Kensington (and trust me, believe what you've read about their support) and they told me only the "non-B" labeled tips work with the winder. Not what you'd expect, especially since their documentation and website say the "...N30B and N30 tips are identical...." Obviously not true.

So, I can either buy additional "non-B" tips or simply not use the travel winder. I'll say it again - REDICULOUS!!!

Another comment - contrary to a previous review - the cable does NOT lock in place. You can move the handle around to try to engage the locking mechanism but it becomes "unlocked" with the slightest movement. Not a huge deal but an obvious design flaw. Not a huge deal though - I'd still use it.... IF IT WORKED!

"Kensington Travel Cable Winder", Terrific item overall. Very easy to use and nicely compact. Highly recommend to the business traveler. I travel over 95% and am constantly looking for ways to streamline the various tools I use. The only complaint I have is that the 6 foot cable length isn't always sufficient depending upon the location of power when in an airport and some hotel rooms.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Every adapter should come with this type of cord", I have had this for two months, and love it. Combined with the use-anywhere 120W adapter with a really flat profile, not only can one charge all types of devices, but it stores well, and cuts out time wrapping cords (or having a snake-lair in one's briefcase). I gave it a "5" even though I can of some minor improvements (e.g., have a snap in retainer for the handle when it folds to lock), but this is so much better than any alternative, I can't see not recommending it highly. [Gave my old iGo juice to my wife as she seems to love shoving loose cords into her briefcase.]

"Makes it worthwhile...", I was carrying around the long cables, but then got this retractable piece, and it made all the difference. It's a bit more bulky, but makes this lightweight unit much more useful. With the splitter, I can now charge my Dell Laptop with my Treo and PMP at the same time.. Good stuff.

"A good choice for very mobile users - however, robustness is questionable", Having destroyed the supplied cable between the adapter and the splitter through abuse in my flight bag, this cable winder provided a suitable replacement. It does what it says it does - provides power from the 'brick' to the splitter and for that, it cannot be faulted too much. In keeping with other reviews here, it could have been built better and time will tell if the ribbon cable is sufficiently robust to survive the 100K+ miles I do a year. A better design would see the fragile ribbon protected at the extreme ends which are a little exposed when the cable is retracted. However, it is far tidier than the default cable and so serves the purpose of keeping the travel weight down and the bag tidier for my frequent TSA inspections...

"durable space saver", my other adapters would break because i would wind the cord around the adapters to save space, plus i hate tangled cords in my bag. The travel cable winder is a perfect solution.

"Handy & Convenient Overall", Convenient roll-up design helps keep the wire spaghetti down in your laptop case. Deploys and winds up quickly, and has adequate length for most applications. Decent construction; does not feel flimsy or cheap. Would be nice if you could lock it in a fixed length, as it unwinds itself from its own weight, but that could be so it does not pull out from your computer. You will get looks and comments as a gadget freak, which us geeks enjoy. I guess having all your cords and cables tied up in knots is cool? If you travel much, or just move your laptop to different plug-in locations a lot, you will enjoy having this cord. Don't pay full retail, natch!
