What our customer's say!
"Charlie Brown", Great content for kids of all ages. Product was fine, service was fine, shipping was fine - all as advertised.
"Animation is primitive, music is bad and tedious, not funny at all, and climax does not make up for two hours of pain.", Man, I know I'm going to get roasted for this 1* review. Because I know that you may not read my entire review before giving me an "unhelpful" vote, please consider this up front: This review is my honest, sincere opinion. The reason the internet exists is so that we may all get exposed to a variety of viewpoints. I have tried my best to explain in detail why I honestly did not like this movie. As such, I hope that my review will be helpful to all, fans (many) and critics (few) alike. I invite you to rebut my opinion in the "comments" section, but in as much as my review helps you to understand why someone may not like this movie, I respectfully ask you to give me a "helpful" vote or no vote at all, even though you may disagree with me. Remember, nothing can please everyone.
I'm an adult seeing this for the first time, and I have an adult viewpoint. Simply not good. Animation is primitive, music is bad and tedious, not funny at all, and the weak climax does not make up for two hours of painful situations. Charlie, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, and Schroeder are decently colorful characters. The rest don't even make it to cartoon quality. I did grow up reading Charlie Brown comic strips in paperback form, and I liked it. But it loses its charm in this format.
2 hours is way too long, forcing time killing extended sequences. Overuse of the "Linus and Lucy" theme gets tedious and shows a lack of diligence. Overuse of the minor key "Linus and Lucy" theme got annoying. It's not funny at all. There is one funny opening joke, and then Snoopy gets just a few funny bits, and that's it. You're in severe pain for 90+% of the movie. That's not entertainment.
Way too mean with name calling and ridicule. Personally I find name calling and ridicule very offensive in any situation, even more so when it's this extensive. I just don't see the payoff in this movie. CB is a loser, a dumb, dull, unliked, untalented kid that ends up losing and "the world doesn't end." I don't see how that's a worthwhile lesson to anyone. The lesson is: no matter how much people call you names, ridicule you, no matter how much you lose in life or no matter that you can't seem to do anything right, somehow it's ok. There may be a nugget of truth in there, but basically having the moviemakers essentially preach to me for two hours that I share those qualities - that's a little condescending, isn't it? But anyway, even if the message were worthwhile, the ending message is so weak and watered down that it doesn't give me a good feeling and erase all the misery I've experienced in the last two hours.
It always felt like they were killing time with extended animation exercises. Extended segments: spelling rules, Linus looks for blanket, Snoopy ice-skating, and the Beethoven segment. Except for the spelling rules segment, the other extended segments did not move the story along, with Snoopy and Beethoven completely superfluous. These segments also came across like animation experiments, "Let's see how realistically we can make Snoopy appear to glide over the ice." "Let's make an extended high art collage set to Beethoven's music." That said: The Beethoven segment was very good and was the highlight of the movie. In fact, it's the only portion I saved for repeated viewing. As a short animation segment it's great, but as far as moving the story of a 2 hour movie along, especially for kids, no.
I can't see anyone learning spelling rules from this movie - so educational value is not much. Show this movie to any kid and then see if he can recite even the I before E rule, I don't think so. Music was no good - the spelling bee song was not good.
I know it's apples to oranges, but this 1969 movie compared to the work and storytelling that Disney was doing as far back as 1937 (Snow White)? Like Rembrandt vs. kids with crayons.
Climax did not even come close to paying off, or making up for all the setup. The climax is two lines: "The World didn't end," and "Welcome home Charlie Brown." That simply doesn't cut it.
"youngatheart", I saw this as a child but I had not seen it in years. My sister was telling me that she had purchased this for her daughters so while I was talkng to her long distance, I just simply ordered it from Amazon. The movie was totally ENJOYABLE! the charaters were rich & the story was excellent. These days this movie about Charlie Brown would be considered different because he would be told to have low self-esteem. Not really. He is a person like you and me that haschallenges. The part I like was any scene with Snoopy. He was the BOMB! I also like the bit with Schroder on the piano. Someday soon my next movie will be SNOOPY COME HOME! Again, enjoy!!!!
"We love this movie!", I have two kids, ages 6 and 4, and we love to watch this movie. I remember it from when I was a kid and wanted to share it with them. I have to say, this is a very slow moving film, but anyone familiar with the christmas special will be familiar with this pace. I think there is a lot of Schultz humor here, there is a lot of angst and name calling, but it wouldn't be Charlie Brown without it. This movie led to discussions about other kids not being nice, and how even when you try your best, you can still come up short. My 6 year old was especially sensitive to how Charlie was feeling throughout the movie. Over all I am very happy to own this.
"If you love Snoopy and Charlie Brown...............", Please don't hesitate to buy this DVD. This was by far the best DVD movie of the peanuts gang besides the holiday specials. This movie I can watch over and over again. I also enjoy sharing it with friends and family. It brings back great memories of when I was a kid.

"Brilliant animated movie!", A 9 year old loser named Charlie Brown is just down on his luck for he can't do anything right and has a few friends like Linus, Lucy and his beagle Snoopy. His skills at flying kites and playing baseball are rather poor and gets help sometimes from Lucy, but one day there's a class spelling bee and Charlie Brown decides to be in it so he can prove he's not a total loser. But suddenly as he spells some words correct he wins and becomes a class champion just enough to be in the national spelling bee in the big city, his friends have total faith in him that he could win the spelling bee and become a home hero.
Entertaining and charming animated feature that is the big-screen debut of the popular comic strip characters "Peanuts" by Charles Schultz. The movie is a funny and thought-provoking piece of animation with a brilliant jazz score and some good songs like the theme song, this movie has always been a childhood favorite of mine that i still enjoy!
The DVD has good picture and sound with widescreen presentation and some scenes that were cut out from the video version and back into the movie. There is a lack of extras but hey that's ok, this is a superb animated flick that kids and adults will enjoy.
"Return back to childhood", For all of you who remember this particular Charlie Brown cartoon, I highly recommend the DVD version. I have already shared it with a number of my friends who remembered the cartoon as well and never thought they would see it again. It's an awesome experience for all.
"Boy, oh boy!", I very much enjoyed seeing this film again as I had not seen it since it was released theatrically in 1969, when I was 12 years old. I hadn't remembered very much about the picture so this viewing was like seeing it fresh. Not surprisingly, A Boy Named Charlie Brown stands the test of time. The story is simple and, like much of the Peanuts vehicles, is somewhat anecdotal. By this I mean that some of the material in the script was clearly lifted from the classic comic strips themselves. Still, there is an overall theme that drives the plot. That is the story of the underdog (Charlie) doing his best, and learning to like himself in spite of his flaws. The animation, though far from Disney quality, is a step above the animation seen in the Peanuts television efforts and better than the later feature efforts. The voice work, by child actors, is also very good. The writing, as can be expected, was top notch. There is also a wonderful title song at the beginning of the film that I found very touching and very appealing. The song, "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was written and is sung by Rod McKuen. It is so good that I am really shocked that it has not become a modern standard. The film looks great, too. The print is sharp and clear and the color is eyepopping. This film is really as fresh as it must have been nearly 40 years ago and would be perfect for children but sophisticated enough that adults will also find it enjoyable.
"Excellent movie, unfortunate DVD", It has been pointed out that the movie was cut from the original fullscreen. This is only a problem in one scene, but it's aggravating in that one. "I Before E" has words appear on the screen, and the letters--and sometimes words--are cut off. They should have put both fullscreen and widescreen on the DVD.
It is unfortunate the DVD doesn't have extras, but from what I've noticed, Paramount does bare-bones DVDs, so we shouldn't really get our hopes up.
Some say Peppermint Patty does not appear in the movie. She does; she's just not listed in the credits, since she doesn't speak. She is seen seeing Charlie Brown get on the bus, and her sign reads, "Chuck".
It's a little weird at times (what's with all the cathedrals, priests and statues when Schroeder plays the piano?), and the voices aren't as good as some other Peanuts specials, but it is absolutely delightful, wonderful, charming and cheerful! The story's good the first time, and you'll want to watch it again and again for the music and animation!
"A long time but worth the wait", I will agree that some special features would have been nice, but it is not enough for me to bump this down to 4 stars.
The picture quality is great! The transition from video to DVD went very nicely for film that was done in 1969 (that's almost 30 years ago for those of you in Rio Linda).
I don't know if anybody has mentioned this, but this appears to be the FULL length of the original movie. When it aired on TV some time in the late 1970's, the song, 'Failure Face', was totally omitted. Probably considered too mean spirited. In addition, there are a lot of scenes such as Lucy video taping Charlie Brown kicking the football, Charlie chewing on the weed out of the sidewalk, the Kite flying (fight?) scene. All of these are NOT on the VHS / clamshell version that I bought in the 1980's.
If you grew up with Charlie Brown as I did and miss Charles Schultz, I highly recommend it. It is great one for kids - be they 9 or be they 40.
I hope that they will continue with the other two Charlie Brown movies and all the television specials to DVD.
