Others say...
"I don't wanna register" This game is too easy, completely unrealistic, and fatally flawed. I think it was rushed to market and not carefully designed. I specifically chose this game because I enjoy the "franchise" aspects of Madden more than the button mashing game play. I am the target market for this game, and I should have liked it. In fact, I did like it at first. I chose the Texans as a first team, since the fun part of this game should be rebuilding a poor team from the ground up and watching it ascend to glory. I carefully retooled the O-line and D-line, and added some key players through free agency. Then I drafted carefully, picking up Lienart and several other good players. I didn't do a bunch of wacky trades to create a fantasy team, but rather used the resources available to build a better team. But, it appears I did my job too well. As soon as the season started, I realized that I had created an unbeatable team. Opposing teams could rarely muster more than 150 yards of total offense. In nearly every game, my team picked off the QB multiple times, often running them back for TD's, and sacked the QB regularly, and just generally stopped the opposing offense from moving the ball. I would say that at least half of the drives end in a turnover. The mighty Texans picked off Peyton Manning 7 times. Enough said. My offense didn't play too well (my halfbacks put the ball on the ground 1-4 times per game), but they didn't need to.
I gave the game another shot, this time choosing the Vikings and doing my best to match the actual roster that the Vikes played with in 2006, getting pretty close to the real deal. But, once again, the same unbeatable team (as opposed to the 6-10 actual Vikings), the same 7-10 turnovers per game, the same lack of offense (okay, that matches the actual team, but it's just a coincidence) with the same result overall-- two games into the season and I was on my way to an almost certain superbowl victory. And I uninstalled the game from my computer so that I won't be tempted to waste another second of my time on it.
There are numerous flaws in the game, some that are just nuisances, and some that make it unrealistic to the point of being silly (I think the biggest one being that star free agents will stay on the market indefinitely, always there for you to pick up at your leisure). The whole handling of player signings and contracts lacks depth and realism. I realize it's just a game, and can't match reality perfectly, but the intention of a "simulation" game, I think, is to bear some resemblance to reality, rather than to require the player to suspend all reasonable disbelief.
"Yuck!" I've been waiting for years for a game like this. How completely disapointing. Shame on you EA Sports. Only 4 1/2 games into a season and I'm done. Just for a few examples, in only 4 1/2 (thus the half) games, the game has locked up requiring a reboot and loss of the game. One of my coaches quit during the season, but I can't replace him since I don't that the "hire coach" task on my calendar. Likewise I get a bunch of emails about trade offers from other teams, but I can't call the team because I don't have a "trade" task on my calendar!! For a game that's so ridiculously detailed, why can't I call the other teams or coaches during my office hours!? It takes hours for the draft for instance (it's all in real time), but I can't do these simple things. Oh, and what's with the 5 minute quarters? Isn't this supposed to be the NFL? The opposing team calls their plays with 30+ seconds left on the clock. I could go on and on and on. Avoid at all costs.
"Horrible and Buggy Ovall very bad" This game had great promise for game play as an excellent Sports Strategy game. Problem; numerous bugs, the network play is just terrible and as you can see by the price drops everyone knows it. You cannot do a direct connect and have to log into the EA network. Which would not be bad if it was not DOWN ALL THE TIME. I would not mind the single player game play but thats not what I purchased the game for. Multiplay is why this would have been a great game. Poor Graphics, Poor Networking, and Overall Very Poor Game Play. Sorry EA but this one will be in the bargain bin at $5 in no time.
"good but not amazing" As a manager and coach program the game is really good, but the fun factor is missing for me, yet. You gotta do so much busy work in your office hours etc. but sometimes you don't have to do nothing, so...
"Filled with bugs." Get this game if you enjoy spending 40 hours + preparing your team for the regular season. It is kind of fun, I enjoyed it although it was very tedious. However like Paul, when I get to game 2 of the season all a sudden scores start becoming 0-0 and when I try and coach my next game its two other teams on the field from a game thats already played and not my Cowboys! I tried patching, reinstalling. Tech support says my saved game files corrupt? Oh great, I go back to my saved game before the draft, sim to game 2 same thing. The only thing that works is going back to my saved game 3 hours into this and starting over and spending another 30-40 hours hoping it doesnt bug up again? No thank you. Nice try EA but next time playtest the game before releasing.
I looked for a patch as soon as I installed the game. Couldnt find one on the EA site. Only after contacting technical support did I get the link for the patch. Thanks for nothing.

What our customer's say!
"Very Disappointed", I was really looking forward to this game. I have several text football simulations that I enjoy playing. I enjoy running the GM functions and picking the plays to see what happens. I like making the trades and building my teams. This game isn't that. It is more an exercise in tedium. The interface is clunky and hard to get it to do what you want. It is buggy when you work hard to ready players each week to have it bug out and return to zero readiness. If you could combine the view of plays like in Madden with some of the good text simulations, you could have a great game. This is just a mess.
"This game is terrible. It seems like a lot of fun, UNTIL ...", This game has a lot going for it inside the box. Even after you install it and start the game, the premonition of fun filled simulation gaming goes down the tube when you realize how buggy this game is. DO NOT purchase this game. Madden football games are GREAT! This game is not. Even if it is 180 from Madden style gaming and puts you in the coaches seat - it STILL had bugs.
This game will never be reproduced, upgraded or continued by EA Sports. What a complete failure.
So much potential ruined by common game play bugs.
My biggest complaint is not the fact it may take hours on hours to play one game - that can be fun if you enjoy simulation type games. The prob is when you actually take the field as a coach. Your hands get tied behind your back and you have limited coaching ability on the field!? Uh...isn't this "NFL Head Coach", not "NFL GM"?
And besides the fact there are bugs that limit reality in the game - there are programming bugs which crash the game half the time. Your computer will not crash and freeze up - but you will get stuck in a dead end in the game and find it useless to continue. The 0-0 bug (which is NOT simply fixed by reducing your roster size as EA claims), the Wrong Team bug (where you suddenly are the coach of another team when game day arrives). Then there is the statistics problem. It's not really a bug, but when does someone like Brett Farve throw 10 interceptions in 4 games and have a 50.0 passer rating? c'mon? Or Mark Brunnell - I know he's a bit old...but 20 interceptions in 8 games with 20.9 passer rating!? get real.
Safe your life from misery. Don't buy this game. As someone noted in an earlier review - EA seemed to rush their release and not play test this game when it came out a year or so ago.
Sad.
"An gaming atrocity", I have played many football GM simulators in the past, and was really looking foward to this game. I have to say that this is the first computer program that has ever outraged me due to it being an overall terribly put together piece of software.
I gave this program a big chance, but after reaching game three of the regular season, I just got so fed up, I uninstalled it and threw away the CDs.
Let's have some examples of how bad this game is, shall we?
1) BUG: When I tried to "motivate" my players in practice, the menus wouldn't come back, and I'd have to close the program and restart from whenver the autosave last saved. EA said it was the video card on my machine, so I tried it on another machine. Same problem. Seems to me a menu not reappearing has nothing to do with my graphics card. I had the patch already installed.
2) BUG: In the middle of an interview I just got suddenly exited out of the practice. The fellow I interviewed was acting like I hired him, but I couldn't hire him. Very odd.
3) BUG: Players on routes would always run out of bounds in the endzone, even for supposed goal line plays.'
4) GM GAMEPLAY: Practices improve certain aspects of your players. But what to do to make them better? Who knows. For "attribute" practices I just randomly ran plays and eventually everybody got better.
5) GM GAMEPLAY: If I simmed past the practices, then it was like the practices didn't occur, and all the coaches were all pissy about the players being unprepared. So what was going on during all that simming?
6) GM GAMEPLAY: The whole calender thing is unbareably tedious, and unrealistic. I can't explain it, but its real bad. Heck, just by reading the comments by other people, lots couldn't figure out how to change your schedule to do something not preplanned. I could keep going on about this but the coaching stuff deserves most of the attention.
7) PLAY DESIGN: Boy I wish I could've tested my plays I designed, but what really bugged me was if you pressed left or right on the designer, you wouldn't get the player to your left or right, it would be somebody else! Made no sense, and discouraged me from creating plays.
8) COACHING GAMEPLAY: All seven games I played I won by LARGE margins. Only got scored on in two. The AI sucks. Nobody should be that good at a game once they begin. Plus I was on a crappy team, and I just stopped practicing after a while.
9) COACHING GAMEPLAY: Dude, prepare for some interceptions. I pretty much threw 30% of the time, mostly short stuff. But the computer kept throwing, and my DBs had tons of interceptions each game. Not realistic.
10) COACHING GAMEPLAY: Speaking about off stats, I pretty much blitzed every play. I would routinely get 7 sacks a game, and a lot more tackles for a loss. Meanwhile I am still getting a ton of interceptions.
11) COACHING GAMPEPLAY: You call this a Sim! If I change my view to blimp view all the sudden both quaterbacks would throw nothing but incompletes. So basically on defense I could switch to blimp view, and on offense the classic view. In the entire time on blimp view there was only one complete pass and one an interception. At least the number of interceptions was cut down.
12) COACHING GAMEPLAY: Who's that player: You want somebody to motion or something, but none of the camera angles can show you which receiver is lined up on the sides. Just have to guess.
I really could go on forever. There are a lot more bugs, bad interfaces, and poor simulations.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
"Tedious...", I enjoy the essence of this game, but find it to be very time consuming and tedious. Once you get into getting hired, it is good for awhile and then you have office hours 3x a day and it gets long. If you have much time to play, then this is a great game. Maybe after I begin the season things will get faster...
"Can't Be Compared to Madden 07", As a big gamer I have both Madden 07 and Head Coach and they are two completely seperate games. I know a lot of other reviewers have tried to compare these two games but it cannot happen. If you want to actually play, be the quarterback and actually be in the middle of plays buy Madden 07. If you want to play as a NFL Head Coach buy Head Coach. I love Head Coach and have owned it for several weeks now. I love the game play and it runs smooth on my computer. You create your own Head coach and play a full time simulation on and off the football field. If you want you can even play in a quick modes that lets you chose one of the 32 head coaches in real life. I have mostly played in the quick mode but recently created my own head coach and boy is this game fun. I am a big time gamer and own a lot of football games, but I know if you buy this game you will not be dissapointed.
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy...
"Great Game and this is not a kids review, just a person who doesn't feel like registering", NFL Head Coach from Ea Sports is a flat out great game. I have been reading some other reviews that say "I bought this because I thought it would be like Madden but you control the sidelines... But Ea went way overboard on the whole coach thing". How can you sit there and say this isn't a good game because it does what it says it was going to? It says "Head Coach Simulation" and that is what it is. How can you sit there and bash this game for being just that? If you do not want to put 12 hours of time into this game adjusting your roster and practicing BEFORE the first pre-season game then do not buy this game. But if you are like me and love simulation games then go out and get this game right now, it accomplishes what it set out to do.
"Good idea lots of bugs", I bought NFL Head Coach because I liked the idea of building a team. I bought the PC version because I figured it would have bugs and I could download patches if they have any in the future.
Here are the problems I had:
1. I saved my career with Denver I can only play 1st preseason game. I try to go to next preseason game I get game but, all the players are black and each team has 535 points will not go farther.
2. I skip to 1st regular season game it plays @STL no hitches glitches or anything. When I sim to game two I get the broncos office but, when I go to game I get the Bears vs Packers. Then I got back to office it was the Broncos office. So I thought I'll sim a few weeks. All the simmed scores were 0-0. When I stopped at 10-31 I got the Broncos office again. So I went to game its was the Pats and some other team not Denver. Then I simmed to SB I got only 0-0 scores they whole way.
Basically I can only sign coaches players and draft and play 1st preseason @DET and Sept 10th game @ STL without problems but, I've gotten no farther no matter what I have tried. As of today no patches are available.
Any of you have the same problems?
"NOT A GAME", BE WARNED, THIS IS NOT A FOOTBALL GAME!!!
Head Coach is a simulation of the life of an NFL Coach. Many of the people writing reviews have purchaced this game under the impression that it was a football game and have walked away completely disapointed.
You start as an offensive or defensive coordinator who has just won the Superbowl and wants to move into a head coach's position. You interview with various teams, then are offered several NFL contracts. After picking a contract and team to play for, you begin managing your rosters and playbooks.
The biggest change that makes most reviewers upset is the actual gamelpay durring a football game. YOU ARE THE COACH. End of story! Contrary to popular belief, the coach does not run the team alone. Some people argue that you have no time to "motivate" or "stratigize" with your players, but are these players aware that the coordinators will fill in where you're slacking?
I love this game because it's the most accruate NFL simulator possable, I am one person on the field, and I need to spend my time wisely. It's not about controlling everything at once, it's about focusing yourself to the most important that at that moment, and expecting everyone else to do the job you trained them to.
Another large complaint is the "videogame style" player stats. No, you won't get to see combine stats... But you do get DAILY updates. The statistics associated to the players do not effect performance on the field, but rather are a reflection of previous play. This is also why players need constant scouting. Sure, a free agent may have been great two seasons ago, but since he took one off, he needs re-scouting.
Overall, this is a great simulation when treated appropriatly, just remember that it's not Madden, and isn't intended to be.
"Good out of the box. Better with some 3rd party addons.", This game is only for true strategy fans. There is no finger twitching action. If you take your time on and enjoy the postseason on Madden, you will probably like this game. If you skip all that, skip this game to. One glaring omission from this game out of the box was a lack of ability to modify difficulty and game lengths. A quick search on the web will provide you an addon that opens these options and many more. This vastly improves the ability to customize the gameplay to better suit your style. I do like this game and see potential for longterm playability.
"eh", This game has some high points in that you are basically the GM and the head of coach of an NFL franchise. However, it it too rigid in structure. THere are way too many office hours where you aren't really allowed to do anything at all. This game has promise and I hope tha EA Sports will address some issues in next year's version (if they make it)
