Others say...
"Wonderful!" I found this game to be exceptional but there were a few problems. (mild spoilers here, beware)
First of all, the puzzles get to be almost ridiculously difficult. I had to use a walkthrough to get past a few sticky parts. However on the flipside, the puzzles are pretty true to life. There are no absurd contraptions to fiddle with (thank god), but the puzzles in the game are more difficult then they should be. For instance(spoiler here), the wall safe is behind a picture and the access point for the safe is rather small and easy to miss. You are never given any indication that there is a safe in the game, which is frustrating, however, real life doesn't exactly drop hints either. And the other problem is that the game ends raising more questions then it answers....But on the bright side, with the Director's Cut version, you get a final chapter called "The Last Visit" which sucks when taken out of context, but does wrap things up pretty well. I found the game to be amazing on the whole. There were a few truely terrifying scenes to be had, and I am NOT the type to get unnerved. And what makes the scenes so great is that they are not your ho-hum gore, but are brilliantly created using the fantastic music and perfect timing. The voice acting was a little contrived, I found Michael (your character) to be way overdramatic, but on the other hand, his voice did help break up the sometimes monotony of the game and add to the suspense...even if it was a bit campy. So, would I recommend this game? Absolutely!, but not to the general masses. I think it had a pretty narrow target audience, but if you enjoy spooky games then this one really delivers.
"Complete waste of time" I want to start by saying that I am avid adventure gamer. I have been playing adventure games all of my life and I was really looking forward to playing this seemingly scary and exciting game. I was horribly mistaken. The game is nothing like what it is advertised to be. Yeah, you hear scratches once, MAYBE twice throughout the entire game. There is no tension and the only reason to keep playing it is in the hopes that something MUST happen eventually. All you end up doing is running around trying to find an object that you must have overlooked because you can't get into ANYTHING and it seems that there is nothing to do. At points, the game really turns into a pixel hunt and becomes increasingly frustrating the more you progress through the game. Despite your aggravation, if you make it to the end, the ridiculous ending if enough to make you scream from the ridiculousness of it. It isn't in any way creative, scary, or even mildly entertaining. I can honestly say that I have not played many games that have disappointed me as much as this one. It truly is a waste of time.
"Incomplete....Warning- spoilers here..." This game starts out great: creepy old estate (with lots of remodeling potential), Mysterious clues about the previous occupants, and only a telephone as a connection to the outside world. The problem is that our hero, "Michael" clearly wants to solve the case and make things right before leaving...but, the writers didn't follow through. There are plenty of items in the inventory that could have taken care of the "final discovery." But, no...After all that work, we leave our responsibilities behind and run like a school girl...There are many unanswered questions...If you like wandering around houses and snooping through drawers, this game is a lot of fun...If you like closure, this game will be frustrating. And what's up with Jerry never bringing the candles or the electrician as promised?
"My first adventure game to play" I had never even heard of adventure games till I ran across this game and thought it sounded very interesting. I absolutely loved it and I shared it with my sister and I wish more games were made as well as this one. One of my all time favorites along with The Lost Crowne. I highly recommend it. Once you install it you do not need to have the disc in to play. So many games you have to play the CD shuffle that it gets a little annoying. If your new to adventure games, you gotta try this one. Easy navigation. Awesome sound effects. Creepy atmosphere.
"slow and boring"
NO activity with another being. You also have to find objects in the correct order(frustrating). My wife and I really tried to like this but it was VERY tedious and slow. As for the gameplay and graphics, you'd think this game was made in the 90's.

What our customer's say!
"Needed a lot of help", I'm still pretty new to these types of games, so I'm sure that someone that is used to them probably didn't have the same problem as me, but it seemed like I had to use a walkthrough an awful lot. The story is pretty interesting and weird. The graphics are nice looking, and there are times that you get chills on the back of your neck.
"Would-be great game", I started off loving this game. I only played it late at night by myself, and it freaked me out. I love it. But not too far into the game I started to get miffed. I started having to scour every nook and cranny on every single floor at least more than once, in order to be able to move on. When that didn't work, I had to resort to the internet. Because I became so familiar with the house and everything about it, the game went from being scary to irritating. When I finally got into a sealed-off room, instead of thinking, "oo, spooky" I thought, "god, finally". The fun was just kinda sucked out. If you are the type that loves to click EVERY LITTLE THING, then you will love this game. Besides the obscure items that make you go wtf, the graphics are extremely good. I also liked how the storyline was going, and the music was very good and mood-setting. The game is often-times quiet, letting your imagination run wild with just about anything. But, like I said, it started to just become a chore instead of an intriguing mystery. Could've been great.
"Great computer game for those not easily freaked out", Arguably one of the best horror computer games ever created. My mother and I are avid mystery/horror video game fans and have played nearly every Nancy Drew that has come out. However, she's expanded into the Dark Fall series and Jack the Ripper, but we both played this.
This game was so creepy that I refused to play it at night because of what might happen in the game. This is perfect for anyone into solving mysteries. We both enjoyed this very much because it's not a bloody, violent game like so many other games and movies nowadays. Psychological is always better.
The game can take a short or long period of time depending on how fast you finish to how long it takes to find objects etc. I found the controls to be good except when it came to clicking on specific things when you had to get it just so or you wouldn't be able to pick it up.
Hands down, one of the best endings, that had me screaming like a little girl.
"Entertaining", I found Scratches to be entertaining with just enough eery tones, sounds and graphics to give great atmosphere. There are so few games made for mystery/horror/or just-plain-want-to-play-a-story game, that I gave this one an extra star rating in cosideration of the lack of competition. I'm a mystery/thriller book reader and this game delivered great genre entertainment. Would definitely purchase any sequel or similar product. It's easy to play and there aren't any automatic rifles!
"Take your magnifying glass and shove it!!!", The other reviews I read had it right. While this game does offer some satisfying puzzle problems, there are some which defy solution(I consider myself pretty good at these). The major gripe I have is that there are sooooo many spots which you have to look closely at(using the magnifying glass)which yield nothing and I mean lots of spots. Also, you collect many objects as you go,but trying to combine them is tricky. The great amount of time you spend opening doors and moving around searching for items(in especially dark locations)really grated on my nerves.I have played way better adventure games, the best being "Keepsake".
You might need this...

"Scary, but inconsistent. 1 spoiler warning!", I just finished playing this game, then I re-played Barrow Hill for comparison, as they are both scary games. I mention this because there are some comparisons to be made. Scratches starts with a good premise and typical point & click gameplay. You have the option to turn off the 360 mouse movement (which makes me sick), and go with the more common click to move the screen around technique. There are plenty of places to click and explore in this game, which is really nice if it serves some kind of purpose, such as telling the story or dropping a hint. But there were just too many worthless clicks. The house is full of about 5000 pictures that you can click to get a close-up. That's all well and good, but for the most part they serve no purpose except to do just that. After the first few rooms, I thought that if I needed to see a particular picture, the game would be nice enough to hint at that later. It didn't and here's the spoiler. It turns out that there is a safe hidden behind one of the pictures in the house. How do I know that? I cheated with some hints. There was nothing that I saw or heard in the game play to indicate that there was any kind of safe in the house. I think you were supposed to wander around the house forever clicking away at pictures. Worse still, the hotspot on the picture close-up for the safe was very small, so if I had clicked on the picture without knowing I was supposed to hunt for another hotspot, I probably would have missed it. That was really annoying. And there were a few instances where no hotspot was made available until after something had been done, so that I had no idea I could use/see/interact with something. The particular spot just looked like part of background. Then there is one particular nightmare involving a 5x5 pixel hotspot you have to find just right or it doesn't work - VERY annoying.
Overall, the game play felt a bit disjointed and some of the puzzles lacked a flow that made sense. For the most part, I was bored. The music was totally uninspired and didn't match the visual sense of forboding. It actually distracted from the atmosphere. I thought the makers would have done much better to leave out the music tract and add in more ominous ambient sounds & choice bits of music to accentuate the mood (like Barrow Hill did). The voice acting was teetering on the absurd, just plain bad accent AND bad voice acting. A shame really, for the price.
The Good: I don't scare easily at all. This game had a few memorable moments where I just about screamed. I mean that, in the literal sense and not the "I'm a girl that screams at everything just to hear my own piercing wail." I'm talking heart-racing, chills up the spine, oh my god where's my teddy bear moments. These few precious moments make the whole mess worth while in my mind. It's at these moments when the game is at it's best. The music stops being camping and adds to the forboding atmosphere, the graphics, sounds, etc all work towards the penultimate moment where the dread really begins. Unfortunately, it's short lived and really punctuates where this game falls flat. But, by God, it was something I have never experienced in a game before, or movie for that matter. Definitely a 10 on the scare-o-meter.
Can I recommend this game? Maybe. If you aren't strapped for cash, then go ahead and get it. But if you need to make a choice, get Barrow Hill instead. That game packs a wallop for the cost, and delivers the ominous atmosphere, gameplay, and music that is so lacking in Scratches. Oh, and it has a few of it's own scary moments.
"ANNOYING! Repetitive, boring, and the ending made zero sense.", Just got done with Scratches.
The number one problem with this game is that it doesn't really matter how hard you try to get through it without using a walkthrough, a walkthrough is essential. We spend hours going through the house, gardens, greenhouse, chapel, and crypt. We went over everything multiple times, tried everything in the inventory, retried, and still, no success. If you don't click on the EXACT spot needed on an object it will not work, which makes for having to repeat your actions a thousand times.
Also, every single time you figure out where to go next, and you use a key or solve a puzzle to open something, all you find is a new key that you don't know where to use, or a new puzzle that you have no clue how to solve. This is no fun. There is zero flow to the game, it is one annoying thing after another.
Almost all the time you spend playing is taken up with re-searching areas you have already gone over many times. It's severely repetitive.
The game will show an icon that makes you assume you can do something with an object or area, when you never end up doing anything on the object or area in the entire game! We wasted a huge amount of time on this, thinking if we used everything in the inventory on the dang thing it would work, only to find out the object or area was unusable.
The ending made NO SENSE. You go through a game thinking the ending will wrap things up, and the only thing this one did was confuse you. It had nothing at all to do with the storyline.
Don't waste your time on Scratches, it's nothing but a disappointment.
"Scratches a bit disappointing", I actually did enjoy this game overall. However, I found the scene changes to be very slow and quite a few times my computer froze up. So I saved the game a lot more than I normally would. Maybe it was just my computer. The game was suspenseful and the music was eerie. I almost jumped out of my chair on two occasions. The puzzles weren't ridiculously difficult and I only used hints for a couple. The puzzle for opening the box in the desk was a little outrageous, but most of the others were reasonable.
I must say that the ending of the game was very disappointing. It was quite abrupt in my opinion and left so many questions unanswered. Maybe the writers left it this was in order to create a sequel. If so, I would be interested in playing. Although this wasn't the worse game I have ever played, it wasn't the best.
"Interesting.", I thought it was fun. I loved the scenario! It's a place to write a book, no doubt about it! But I got really scared with everything happening around it! I jumped so many times. The story has a very interesting end and the puzzles are not difficult if you really pay attention. There's a lot to do and the mistery keep you busy all the time. I like games with a good story even odd ones. I liked this one. Hope you enjoy it too.
"This game will freak you out!", One brief sentence sums up "Scratches" nicely: Not for the faint of heart.
A computer game -- especially one with relatively simple graphics -- has never scared me so much. It's not necessarily what you see, but what you don't see, that counts. This is in keeping with the way horror movies used to be. "Scratches" employs the psychological effect that leaves the horror mainly to your imagination. This is truly what makes the game work. I am in shock and awe that anyone could play this game without being scared. Maybe if you turn the music and sound effects off, but in a dark room by yourself with the speakers turned up, this game will give you a heart attack! There are several jump scenes that leave your nerves shredded. My palms were sweaty and I was glancing over my shoulder more than once. I mean, crawling around in a dank, dark basement in the dead of night, trying to find the source of an eerie scratching noise? What could be more fright inducing than that?
For fans of the adventure game genre, be aware that "Scratches" doesn't compare very well with other titles like the "Myst" series. This game plays up the horror and suspense aspect in a way your typical point-and-click game does not. "Myst" is mysterious; "Scratches" is a nail-biter horror show.
Despite all the good, there is some bad. First, the game would have been just as good without the profanity and blasphemy sprinkled throughout. That was a needless addition. As some other reviewers have already pointed out, the game also lacks the logic of Myst. I was forced to resort to a walkthrough more than once. The final resolution of the puzzle in question often left me scratching my head and wondering how in the name of all that's holy I was supposed to figure that out on my own. The ending is weak, too, although the lead-up is incredibly. I had a hard time clicking that last time, knowing what lurked in the shadows. If a game can build that much tension, it is definitely a success.
Again, "Scratches" offers many positives with just a few negatives. Definitely not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't let my kids play it unless I was right there with them, especially given the sinister ending. Overall, though, definitely worth checking out if you thrive on suspense.
