"Mixed review", First, the good part. I have a hopelessly old monitor whose color was completely off and all my prints were coming out greenish. This unit didn't make the monitor good-as-new, but it did bring about a noticeable improvement that I had been unable to produce by tinkering with the controls and Adobe Gamma for hours.

Now the bad part: There is a quick start guide that is, basically, useless. There is no manual or help menu or any sort of guidance provided either in or on the box or in the software cd. If you visit the manufacturer's site, and search for "manual" or "user guide" or any term for that matter, you get "no results".

There are times, during the calibration (especially the manual one), that the process seems to stall, nothing seems to be happening for long periods. There is no guidance as to what you're supposed to be doing and no way of knowing if something is wrong and you should press the "stop" button or not. (The stop button is the only control on the screen other than a scale with green shading that never seems to change).

Once you have completed the process and saved your profile, there is no guidance as to whether you're supposed to leave the unit plugged in w/the ambient top on (for continuous calibration?) or if you can unplug it and put it away until next time. (This is a lid that has the double purpose of protecting the unit and filtering ambient light during the calibration process). There is no way to find an answer to this stupid question on the website.

When you start the program there is a button to click on for updates. By all means, get the update as it is more efficient (but equally uninstructive) than the cd contents. However, it takes rebooting and a couple of tries before the upgrade installs.

I was fortunate that, during an analysis early in the process, my monitor passed the test as one of those that can be calibrated "automatically" (w/o my having to fiddle with contrast and brightness controls on my monitor). Not all monitors qualify. The first time I tried, I didn't know this and the non-automated process is very prone to stalling and leaving you with a blank screen and an equally blank stare.

During my first attempt to calibrate manually (before I realized that I qualified for automatic) the process seemed to stall, windows flashed a message about a corrupted file, then another message that windows was shutting down the program due to a conflict with the system, then a blue screen memory dump, then a diagnostic re-boot. All in all, not a pleasant experience.

Still, I tried again and it worked (or I guessed right) I got what I paid for. This is probably not the best calibrator out there, but it was the best I could afford right now and it did as well as I had hoped within the limitations of an old monitor.

"Eye-One Display LT does the job", From what I can still tell, the LT model does most of what I will ever need (versus Pro model). I bought it to get improved consistency in the color rendition across my prints -- some done in labs, some on professional inkjet printers. Everything has worked like a champ, and I can see a visual difference on the screen which I'm hoping will translate into more consistent color on my prints.

The only reason I didn't rate 5 stars is that there are couple usability improvement that are needed. First, there were places in the UI where I pressed the wrong button/choice because it wasn't clear or intuitive which option to choose. If I had read the instructions on the right hand side of screen, it would have been fine (I don't usually read instructions). The other reason is that I had cleared out the items in my Windows Startup folder, and not only did I wipe out the ICC profile data, but I couldn't figure out a way to get the profiles back short of re-installing the software. I should have been able to just run the calibration software, but tried and it didn't do the trick. Again, might be user error, but it could have been more intuitive.

Otherwise, I'm really pleased with the ease of setup and use, and would still highly recommend the product to anyone who wants an entry level solution and questions whether they need the 'pro' version.

"Does what it is supposed to do!", I purchased this item after using a Huey Pro borrowed from a friend. The Huey Pro did a very bad job calibrating my Viewsonic 2025wm. On the hand, the EyeOne display did a fantastic job. The only negative comment I have regarding this product is the confusing brand names it is known by - This product is called by so many different names it gets really confusing. GretegMacbath EyeOne, X-Rite EyeOne, Pantone EyeOne....and sometimes it is referred to as i1 too!

I have installed this product on both Windows XP and Mac OS X Leopard. On both platforms it has performed flawlessly. The software that comes with this product is very simple to use, and I think for beginners its a lot easier to start of with this LT version. I found it difficult to find information about how to upgrade to the pro version (which then means you have the EyeOne Display 2), but somewhere I read that you need to run the diagnostic software and upgrade thro' that. As of now I don't need to upgrade, so not tried it yet.

All in all a good product worthy of a five star rating.

"Excellent Price, Excellent Product", The Eye one does exactly what it says - calibrate your monitor so what you see is what you get when you make prints. I would have given it 5 stars if the directions were a bit clearer. But just using the defaults brings you very close to perfect prints. Note: you must download the paper/printer profile from the manufacturer of the paper to get excellent quality prints to match your monitor.

"WYSIWYG - What you see is what you get", Recently, I've read several books about Photoshop CS2 and digital photography and the general consensus of the authors relating to color management is that calibrating one's display device is essential. The overriding recommendation is to use hardware calibration (colorimeter) or, at the very least, an eyeball method (Adobe Gamma, QuickGamma).

Mindful of this information, I calibrated my home CRT, LCD and laptop and my work CRT with free a software program (QuickGamma) that was recommended by several digital camera and Photoshop sites. Previous to this I had used Adobe Gamma but I quickly found that QuickGamma produced superior results. Another thing I noticed was that it was much easier to calibrate the CRT's than either the LCD or the laptop using either eyeball method. When I printed photographs with my home inkjet there seemed to be a pretty good match between the CRT display and output but when I moved pictures from different computers there were noticeable shifts.

With my interest piqued, I decided to purchase a hardware calibrator the Eye-One Display LT (Light?) to see if I could match images between displays and to determine if I could achieve a closer color match between my printer and displayed image.

The Eye-One was easy to use and set up on all displays once I got the hang of the wizard that explains each step. As other reviewers have mentioned a software update is available from Pantone's site and this adds some functionality to the software and is a recommended update. Depending on your displays capabilities the Eye-One allows the user to optimize the, brightness, contrast, color temp, gamma, and RGB set points and then creates a custom profile for your display. With the LT version the color temps available are 5000, 6500 and 7200 and the gamma points are 1.8, 2.2. The next version up allows greater flexibility in these areas but the LT's numbers should be adequate for most users.

Using the updated software, I was able to compare before and after pictures. I also printed several pictures out using the new profile and checked them against my monitor. The results showed marginal improvement over the QuickGamma profile (approx 5%). So with my home CRT, I was not greatly impressed with the results. After profiling my laptop and LCD, however, my feelings changed. Both displays became more vibrant and accurate and, in addition, there was greater consistency between all my displays with regards to color reproduction.

Overall, a nice piece of hardware and software that is intuitive to use and is particularly effective at creating profiles for LCD's and Laptops.

Note: The calorimeter included with the LT is the same as the one included with the more expensive Eye-One Display 2. The only difference between the 2 packages is the included software, which can be upgraded if needed.
