"I love my LaCie"
For ease of installation, speed, reliability and appearance, the LaCie Brick can't be beat. I needed more space to store Tivo files, videos, and music but I didn't want to clutter up my desk or tackle installing a hard drive. This was a great solution - I can unplug it easily and hide it away or leave it on my desk without it looking like, well, a computer component. Yes, the USB cord is short but I have plenty of extra USB cords around if I wanted a longer one so I have no complaints. The speed is impressive - I transfered over 60 gigs in about 30 minutes. Definitely a good value for the price.

"Excellent external hard drive"
This hard drive worked perfectly out of the box - within two minutes of opening the box, I was running smooth in Windows XP. The hard drive stays cool and runs very quietly.

"LaCie 250 GB Brick USB External Hard Drive"
There are 4 problems that may not be major but irritated me: 1) USB cord is too short - 2 feet. I had to buy an extension. 2) On-Off button hard too find, very inconspicuous and depressed. Must use fingernail to touch.
3)Uses a SAMSUNG driver which causes it to take on a SAMSUNG peripheral ID in WIN XP. 4) Backup software as provided on CD doesn't work at all. One must go to LaCie web-site to download and install a correct version.

Otherwise drive works well.

"I would suggest looking elsewhere."
I normally wouldn't take the time to review a product but I had so many problems with this one that I wanted to warn other potential buyers. I bought a LaCie 250 red brick external hard drive a few weeks after Christmas so that I could move my music to it and free up space on my laptop. I did this and everything was great....for about a week. The hard drive failed on me after less than 7 days. It was shown mounted on my hard drive but would not import or export any items. Soon after it would not turn on. I called LaCie, since they don't do data recovery or offer much customer support period I had to send it back to Amazon, losing around 80GB of music some of which was pretty rare.

The replacement drive arrived in disrepair. It looked fine, sure but wouldn't mount on my desktop. Just to preface, I am a Mac user and am quite familiar with external hard drives and basic computer skills. Once again, I had to call LaCie. They didn't really help too much besides suggesting that the cable might be bad. Now this may have been true. I did not test it with another cable, mainly because I was fed up with LaCie period at this point. I boxed it back up and returned it to Amazon.

End of story...I spoke with a local data recovery service here in KC. The guy said that he saw a lot of LaCie products and that he didn't think they were extremely reliable to say the least. [...]. I ended up purchasing a hard drive from them, I can't recall exactly which one but it has aluminum casing and so far it works great.

On a last note. My brother does own a different LaCie drive and it's worked for him for the last 8 or 9 months or so. Perhaps it's the Brick drive that's unreliable or perhaps I got the only two faulty units...but I doubt it.

"Easy Setup, does the JOB"
Easy setup, no even 5 min.
Small USB cable, but easy to replace for a better one.
Copying speed as fast as spected.
Comes alredy formated, nice presentation

What our customer's say!

"Performance fine, but not sturdy!", The hard drive worked fine, and I appreciated its funky aesthetic. However, it's not the smallest or lightest box in the world so it does take up space for those that will be taking their external hard drive/s with them often. Also, I found its occasional humming during use noticeable, if not particularly loud. My one major gripe is that it's not nearly the sturdiest of machines. I took it with me when I moved countries and it didn't seem to make the journey, though I took it in carry-on and don't believe it was treated particularly abrasively. It has a spinning drive piece that has broken, rendering the hard drive useless and the information saved on it inaccessible. Now, I have to try and figure out how to extract the data from the drive. I've been told that such parts are common in externals, but I would recommend purchasing a "rugged" design model if you will take yours traveling.

"One Year and Still Going Strong", I bought a LaCie 250 GB USB 2.0 red brick drive in November 2006 to back up a large amount of digital photo work, and as a general backup disk. So far, the drive has worked flawlessly, though it's worth noting I don't run it constantly. I only power on the drive and connect it to a system when I need to back up or retrieve data.

Pro:

- The drive is quiet when idling -- much quieter than my T43 laptop's fan.
- It's worked flawlessly: no data loss, and shows up as a plug-and-play device with no problems.
- USB 2.0 is reasonably fast and flexible for moving between various PCs.
- The case design is unique, fun and eye-catching.
- It's a reasonably-priced drive, even though there are less expensive drives out there.

Con:

- As other reviewers have noted, the power switch is a bit difficult to find by feel alone and is cumbersome to depress if you have larger fingers.
- The female-DIN power-supply connector on the back of the drive also seems fragile, so I've always been extremely careful when attaching the power supply to the drive.
- The included USB cable is pretty short.
- The included backup software did not install on Windows XP Pro/SP1 (and I haven't bothered with it since.)

Even with so many items in my "Con" list, I still give this drive four stars, mostly because of price/performance/reliability, and because none of the negatives listed above affect my work.

"so far, so good", It works quite well. It's silent and has not given any problems. I hope it stays that way. Looks really cool on my desk!.

"I've owned this drive for 30 minutes now...", It has been the most hassle-free piece of hardware I've ever used. I simply opened up the box and plugged in the cables. The drive was FAT32 formatted and my Airport Extreme base station recognized it immediately after I hooked it up. It now runs as a network drive.

Looks and feel: cool design from packaging & box, to the actual drive.

I'm very pleased with it thus far.

"Works great for me", I bought it strickly for backup. It works great.
It's a great investment. Being USB portable it's one of the few things you can take with you to a new computer. My only regret was that I didn't buy a 500GB.

The only thing that sucked was their packaged backup software. I did some research on line & downloaded "backup4all". It saves the backed up files as zip's. There's a bunch of backup softwares out there & I don't have a clue which is the best but I can attest that this one works great with the LaCie & is easy to use.

"Simple & effective", I'm running XP, I connected power, I connected the drive to my PC using a very old USB cable and new USB 2.0 hub, powered on, disk was visible, within 2 minutes of unpacking I was backing up my (significantly noisier) WD internal hard drive. Of course I realised immediately from the slow copy speed that I needed to reformat to NTFS, which I did. Performance after doing that exceeded expectations of a USB HDD device. Case heating is negligible. Noise is unnoticeable. $ per GB is competitive. 5 stars.

Update October 2007: drive has remained powered on permanently. It is as cool and quiet as when I first wrote the review, and I have experienced no errors to date. However, only 320 GB and 500 GB look to be available now, and some 500 GB reviewers report that they find the 500 GB brick to be considerably more noisy than the 250 GB.

"great external storage medium", I got this product because i needed extra storage to put my itunes on. my laptop hard drive is only 80G and it was almost full. i have a vast amount of cd's collected over the years which i have been transfering onto itunes.

I found the product very easy to use. Simple plug and play. My laptop picked it up straight away. No problem.

I now have all my photos, music and psp movie files on the external storage with loads of space to spare. my pc performance has improved and i am thinking about buying another one and using it on a home network i am setting up.

10 out of 10. Well done LaCie. Love the design. Makes stacking easy.

"Quiet good little hard drive", Picked this drive up to have something to back-up my machine to. I'm using a G5 iMac and find that the LaCie drive is quieter than the mac (which says a lot). I've been using it for about a week now and have the following pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Quiet
2. Small
3. Fun colors and simple design
4. Power button and power down when not in use

Cons:
1. Shine on plastic casing shows scratches and dust easily
2. Power brick

Not sure if it's a con, but it took about 50 minutes to transfer about 60Gb of video to the drive.

"Attractive and Quiet", Attractive and quiet it adds fun to my desktop. Although one reviewer said that this drive stays on all the time, it doesn't have to since it has a power button on the back of the unit. I can't review the backup software because I'm using another brand currently. I love it.

"Great product", I'm using a Mac on OS X and this drive was 'plug and play' for me and I've had no problems at all so far (4 months later). It's quite fast and quiet, has a nice colorful design and is competitively priced so it has suited all of my needs.
