Others say...
"Great Product - others that write bad reviews - just don't seem to pay attention .." This product is wonderful. The reason why some of the other people have had a hard time with this adapter is that the powertip system sticks out a bit from the back of the Mac. If you are not careful with how you handle your laptop with the power connected - it can easily break the tip or the power connector to your Mac. The stock power connector has a very small head and it is rounded. The Kensington smartip system has what I would call a very "normal" type of connector. The downside to this mobile power freedom - is that you have to watch how the plug is resting on whatever surface you happen to be computing on.
Otherwise - great device, power my mac anywhere and charge my ipod to boot! Comes with the three tips listed in the tech details.
The tips are not poorly made and do their job as designed - just watch the connector !!
"Kills your battery" I was still getting over 3 hours per charge before I bought this charger as an extra to keep at my office. After a month of using it, my battery now only holds a charge for 30 minutes. I'd recommend just ordering a new charger from Apple. Hopefully Kensington will give me my money back so that I can immediately spend it on a new battery.
"One of those situations where 1 star is MUCH too high" This was the only product I could find locally to replace the power adapter on my Mac when it suddenly went up in flames. I had this less than a month when the tip broke off inside my laptop. According to the local repair shop, my motherboard was destroyed and it will cost $1000 to repair. Even if it doesn't damage your laptop this isn't a good product - falls out frequently, isn't great at holding a connection. Buyer beware!!!!
"It doesn't get worse than this." I have now purchased this unit twice. The first time, I was thrilled to get an adapter new from a site for $30. I didn't care what it was like. It broke the next goddamned day. The tip outter ring snapped off when removed. That was frustrating but I figured it was a fluke, so I bought ANOTHER one of these. The second one middle tip broke off on the second day...IN MY POWERBOOK. SO I spent five hours trying to remove a tiny piece of metal from my powerbook power in jack. Finally managed to do it with very careful use of krazy glue. This is a piece of garbage. Buy anything else. I have never seen a product so cheaply manufactured. The power unit is fine, but the tip on it will fly apart instantly.
"Good Substitute for Apple's PowerBrick" This power adapter runs a lot cooler than the 45 watt adapter that Apple supplied with my G4 PowerBook and the PowerBook itself is cooler to the touch. Works great, either plugged into the wall or or my truck. Have not tried to use it on a plane yet because as far as I know, Southwest doesn't have power outlets on their seats. My only gripe is that the travel pouch could be a bit bigger; it's a snug fit getting stuff back in it, especially if you carry an iPod and a Palm SmartTip for it like I do.

What our customer's say!
"Perfect", I bought the identical product @ CompUSA (when the actual stores were still around) for $150.00. I found the exact same product on Amazon in new condition for $29.99. Wow talk about price gouging, the F*$#@%@ should be sued. Awesome product, awesome price.
"kensington bastards", good product, I bought it for the apple tips. They dont make em' any more so I bought the whole adapter. In fact, I should buy another.
"Poor quality", I bought this product a while back and the N23 tip broke inside my computer. I was able to retrieve it, and bought another whole unit while traveling. The tip also broke on this new unit and now I cannot find any replacement for the now infamous Smartip N23, not even at Kensington. Spent over $150.00 on these two units and they are now no more than paperweights. Mediocre quality and no customer support whatsoever. Back to Apple where at least their customer satisfaction is far superior.
"Maintaining connection is tricky", I bought this unit when my other travel adapter would not maintain a connection. I still have the problem with this unit, though it is not quite so extreme. The tip will make a connection only when it is in precisely the proper position. I have to secure the cord under my Al PowerBook so it doesn't move, then rotate the tip and bend the cord until a connection is made--and watch for several seconds to be sure the connection is maintained. Without an indicator light on the tip, the only way I can be sure I still have a connection is by continually looking at the battery indicator on the menu bar. Many times I don't notice I have lost the connection until I get a low battery warning. Never a problem with the original Apple adapter. I use this adapter only because my setup makes it very inconvenient to take the Apple adapter with me.
"Reliable. low cost power adapter", I was a little surprised to see the negative reviews on this product. I bought mine after pricing other units and finding this one to be the lowest cost. Others questioned its reliability, so I was concerned about taking this on a camping trip. But switching between the car and ac adapter was easy and my partner & I ran both our iBooks and her iPod from the one adapter over a two week trip. It's been great. I use it all the time now.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Great Idea - Not So Great Execution", I needed a new power adapter for my Powerbook, so this seemed like a great idea. For for a little bit more than Apple's AC adapter I could get AC and DC with connections for auto and airplanes.
The only problem is, it doesn't work very well. The Smarttip connector for the Powerbook will not keep a connection. I continually have to check the power indicator on my Powerbook and twisting the connector to make sure the battery is being charged.
Kensington also seems to have fudged on the power specification. They claim 70 watts, but the Powerbook's System Profiler reports 45 watts. This means that the battery takes much longer to charge than Apples adapter. In fact, while I am using it, it barely charges at all. If I set the Powerbook down, likely as not the Smarttip loses its connection and I come back to a dead battery.
So, there's a great idea here. Perhaps someday, someone will implement it in a competent way.
