"Garmin City navigator"
Hello,

I have bought the city navigator for North America. It is a good product in general, but I was very disapointed that it couldn't find most of the KOA campgrounds I wanted to visit.

Robert

"Excellent Product and Value"
Product was all I expected and then some. I loaded this on my Garmin IQue 3600a PDA. Whatever you need to know about an area it's here.

"Excellent Product, Too Expensive"
This Garmin mapping software is excellent, easy to use and very accurate. The only problem with it is that it is too expensive. Especially compared to other GPS companies.

"Very good product!"
I have read reviews that this software was sometimes difficult to load but I had no problems. The only thing that annoyed me is that it didnt already come preloaded in the $ 250.00 Garmin handheld gps I recently purchased. Seems like you have to spend an extra hundred dollars if you buy a handheld but it comes in the units made for car dashboards. I find that unfair!

"wonderful mapping/guidance software"
Very complete maps and millions of POI. Search function on the Garmin 60 CSX is very intuitive, better than my car navigation system. This will make your hiking GPS device just as functional for driving/walking anywhere.

What our customer's say!

"? A little glitchy for modern GPS software", It has all the points of interest that I am looking for and the maps are very detailed but the mapping software has some rather annoying glitches when it comes to entering addresses. You almost have to trick it with certain addresses to get them to show up while creating a route.

"Watch for outdated editions", I purchased this map set for my eTrex Vista HCx unit on 8/4/2008. It worked fine, but it was not the latest version. When I installed it I was immediately notified by the installer program that there is an update available. Next I got on Garmin's web site and it said you can get a free upgrade within 30 days of purchase. I called the next day and was told that, unfortunately, free upgrades do not apply to maps purchased separately from a GPS unit. The update to City Navigator North America 2009 would have cost me $75 on top of the $80 I just paid Amazon for the DVD. It seems like this is probably a common problem (stale versions in inventory), but the fact that you immediately have to pay for an upgrade to get current doesn't sit well with me. Most other software products include at least one free upgrade so you are starting with the most current version. I think Garmin should be dinged for this unreasonable policy. As a result of this situation, I returned the City Navigator 2008 version and will order the 2009 version directly from Garmin. I am not happy about this, but I like the GPS unit, so I will begrudgingly go through the hassle.

"The iQue 3600 is still supported!", Nice to see that Garmin is still providing a map product for this older platform. It's a backup to my newer Nuvi 760 but still works well especially after a battery transplant. The updated maps database and points of interest are nice to have. The only reason I knocked off a star in the rating is because it takes (in my case) HOURS to upload the maps to the SD card. But once it's done, you're good to go. Thank you Garmin!

"Not the latest version.", I used to be a huge Garmin fan, but they have really mucked this up. The version that gets sent to you is v8. As soon as you install it, they tell you that v9 is available and that you "may" be charged $75 for the upgrade. (To which I inquired and let's just say you "will" be charged.) I then found out that the v9 is actually a stand-alone, and not an upgrade version, so I could have saved money by going straight for the supposed "upgrade." I think at this point I'll save the $75 and put it towards a non-Garmin unit.

I am also having major problems with it in Vista, but hope installing it on my XP Pro laptop will at least make the DVD usable.

Disappointing, at best.

"Pricey but does the job", Needed more detailed maps and this did the job. Just seems to be a bit pricey. It appears that online updates are not available.

"Good but make sure to ask whether it is the latest product", This is a very good product. Works very well. However, I noticed that there was a newer version available from Garmin for this product. Because I found it out within one month of purchas Garmin sent me the update at no extra cost.

"Great Maps", This mapping software, as with one other that I have tried, is not perfect.

The unlock process for this software makes it impossible to use with more than one unit. Once the maps are loaded onto the microSD card you might be able to use the card in several different units of the same model, but I only have one so I don't know. My suspicion is that the maps are encoded with the serial number for your unit, which you enter when going through the unlock process. Perhaps, if the microSD card detects that it is not in the correct unit it will not work. Who knows?
You can load the software onto different computers though once you have the unlock code.

I like to eat at Whataburger a few miles from my home. The mapping software showed it as being 3.79 miles from my home so I had it take me there, even though I already knew the way. It did a great job getting me to the exact intersection, but it showed the Whataburger as being on the opposite corner. I am not complaining!

After finishing my #1 Combo meal, with onion rings, I asked it to take me to my street address. It took me right to my driveway!

In essence, the software gets you close enough to use your eyes to find what you are looking for. Sometimes it is dead-on, other times it requires a little thinking on the part of the driver.

It is afterall just a machine and is prone to errors because a human made it.

I still am very pleased with all of the POI's (Points of Interest)that are listed. I am enjoying making my own waypoints for places I visit everyday for my job. It's neat looking at the map and seeing all of the little marks I have made that indicate where I have been.

"Solid piece of software", My previous Garmin had a base map loaded, but it couldn't be upgraded, so this was the first time I had to expand my new Map60CSX's awareness. The registration/activation was unexpected (how do people not connected to the web deal with this?), but uneventful.

The interface has some oddities in form, but not to the point where it won't function properly. The search for an address still strikes me as disjointed compared to my DeLorme products. I'd also like to see the option of renaming/removing points of interest that have either been renamed or removed (restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc.).

"2008 city navigator", Lots of info on the dvd. Takes a while to load but info is right on target. Resturants to hotels to highway exits right on target. Using in a Garmin 60CSX. Previously purchased Topo 2008 which is awesome. No way one can get lost. Used mine in Colorado for big game hunting.

"City Navigator unlock codes", So without any notice... or any additional information on the product until we went to unlock the new 2008 maps. Previous years you could unlock the maps for 2 devices (we have a pair of GPSmap 60CS units). As of 2008, apparently you can only use the map unlock code with a single unit and MUST PURCHASE a second unlock code for your second device.

The Garmin website is a mess and any additional information about unlock codes is missing from their website. Some of their own links end in broken links that turn up no information.

When I bought these units, they were pretty much the only game in town as far as a good screen and a portable unit. Now there are a ton of other options. If you're looking to buy a new unit... I would look elsewhere. Garmin is downright hostile to the enduser. Maybe all of the GPS companies are... but I intend on finding out now and will not buy anything else from Garmin again. There have been complaints by others for years about how hard and complex the unlock code process is... I agree. I've been able to get through it once a year. Insult to injury, now it's going to cost me even more (on top of the mental anguish) if I want to use this update on both of my Garmin GPS's. Buyer beware.
