"Recommend this product." I had previously bought a Linksys router and swore never to buy one again because of poor perfomance and signal strength. I was recently shopping for a router when our Netgear quit after 1 year and saw some reviews on this Linksys and decided to give it a try. I must say that I have been very happy with it and the signal strength is very good (in the same house). I would recommend this product. Happy surfing...
"My recent experience trying TrendNet, Netgear, and Linksys Routers and why I chose the WRT54GL" I have a very standard home network with two HP desktop PC's, one Sony laptop, and and a WM5 Pocket PC all hooked up to a DSL broadband connection via a Linksys Wireless-G router. However, I do insist on high wifi security so use at least WPA + TKIP encryption in combination with MAC address filtering. After three years of operation the router suddenly died so I decided (on price) to first give TrendNet a chance to replace it with the TEW-432BRP which I bought for $40.
I installed the TEW-432BRP router, updated to the latest TrendNet firmware, and had no problem connecting all of my wifi devices with WPA + TKIP encryption enabled. However, as soon as I switched on MAC address filtering in the router firmware all of a sudden I could no longer access MSN instant messaging or Hotmail on any PC on my network. Reading into the firmware history file I saw that TrendNet has had previous issues with connectivity to MSN which it believed it had fixed... well perhaps so for general router settings but apparantly not when also using MAC address filtering mode. In any case, for a router to block any web site in any mode of operaton was unacceptable so I packed up the router and brought it back for return to vendor.
I next bought the Netgear WPN824 router for $65, set it up, updated to the latest Netgear firmware, and connected my devices. The router connected with every wifi device successfully using WPA + TKIP encryption. But as soon as MAC address filtering was enabled only my WM5 Pocket PC could still connect... the router completely blocked the Sony laptop from re-connecting. This happened despite the fact that the router had automatically entered the correct MAC address for the Sony into its allowed devices database from when it was connected without filtering earlier. The Netgear MAC address filtering firmware obviously has a quirky problem with Sony laptops using the Intel a/b/g wifi adapters. Netgear Tech Support had no useful suggestions and recommended returning the router to vendor which I promptly did.
I finally bit the bullet and bought the Linksys WRT54GL for $75 because it got good reviews online and offered open platform support for third party firmware. No surprise, even with the default Linksys firmware it works as advertised with all my devices and using full WPA + TKIP encryption and MAC address filtering. There were no unexplainable wifi lockouts (as with Netgear) or MSN/Hotmail blocks (as with TendNet). Linksys had designed and tested MAC address filtering correctly.
Clearly TrendNet and Netgear need to spend more time building a robust MAC address filtering implementation and test product compatability more thoroughly in this mode if they want to compete with Linksys. I'll be sending this feedback to all three vendors and kudos to Linksys for getting it right straight out of the box. In networking compatability will always be the king.
"So Easy, Even for a Novice Like Myself" Opened up the box, inserted the start up CD, followed the step by step instructions, and that was it! My new laptop was on the network within about 5-7 minutes, and there have been no problems at all. Very nice for a person with limited computer knowledge, such as myself.
"Doesn't recognize slingbox, pay for online support" Wasted over 10 hours this weekend trying to get this replacement router to recongize my slingbox, which was recognized by my old Netgear, with identical cabling. I retested by replanting the old one, and it recognized and shook hands instantly.
the Linksys did recongize two computers and tivo box, but after many hours on phone with both Slingbox support(superb)and Linksys (disappointing), unable to get it to connect with the Slingbox. Returned the router to Amazon this morning.
Both my calls to Linksys support were frustrating. Difficult to understand the foreign accent with both experts and had to pay 10 dollars for them to assert remote control over my computer (sling box was free). Just [...], I thought, but upon further reflection frealized that this fee is about 20% of the cost of the router!
Feel the problem was in the firmware, but in trying to download new firmware from the website, encountered .bin files my computer could not open.
I'm not a techie, and this entire exercise seems far beyond the normal user.
"Great piece, a real pita to set up." EVERYBODY on the IT staff at work recommended this piece with the older 'flashable' system. After playing on ebay, used up pieces were within ten bux of new ones, so Amazon. It's been several weeks since install, but it took me MANY hours of fussing to get this thing to connect to a small-brand (earthlink) dsl server. 4th query to a Lynksis tech who knew the secret and another setup finally made it hook. So much for plug and play. I'm willing to blame oddball provider protocols, but this was enormously time consuming and frustrating. I dread the day if I ever have to go through that again after a crash.

What our customer's say!
"Well-deserved reputation", I bought this device on the back of its reputation for reliability and flexibility and value for money. I'm completely satisfied.
Installed the Tomato firmware on Day One and haven't looked back. Very solid product.
"Nice internet and networking solution.", I have two desktops which I wanted to connect to broadband modem via cat5 cable plus we intend to purchase a laptop around Christmas and we want to connect it via wireless. We also wanted to network.
There is no paper documentation but there's supposed to be a user's manual on the CD. I didn't need it so I haven't checked. Setup was very simple, just insert the CD and follow prompts.
Both desktops accessed internet immediately and speed seems the same as before. However, after running the Windows XP Home network setup wizard, neither pc could see the other on the network.
After some experimentation and searching the net for a solution, it turned out that I only needed to do two things......disable Norton 360 firewall and manually configure the router. That is, manually assign the ip addresses for both pc's.
I can't comment on the wireless capabilities yet but, having used Linksys products almost exclusively, I don't expect to have any problems. Good stuff.
"Rock solid", Dropped dd-wrt on this guy and it's been up w/o issue ever since (about 2 month uptime). I have torrents running often as well as streaming content and web browsing w/o any lockup. If you do your research, I think you'll find this is the best consumer level router available. Thanks to Linksys for bringing the linux version back!
"Works great!", I've bought and installed 4 of these so far and I use one personally at home. I'm going to end up buying 2-3 more.
I'm using them with the after market firmware Tomato.
They work extremely well.
A+ to Linksys for an amazing product.
"Avoid this outdated troble-making model.", I bought this router because of its good review and third party firmware(DD-WRT, Tomato, etc) support. However, the result turn out to be a big mistake. This router has very limited signal range and every time the microwave oven is on, the connection drops. The worst part is the router has very limited capability to handle internet traffic, after several hours of working, the router freeze, the speed become incrediblely slow, and then you have to manully reset the router, you can imagine what a huge trouble it is. I also try to flash DD-WRT and tomato, they do not slove any problem. After doing some research(from wiki), I found this model is actually a reissue of WRT54G v4, which is a many years ago product using a outdated Broadcom BCM5352EKPB Chipset. Fotunately my friend move in with me and he has a another router, ever since that, everything is fine.
My suggestion is if you want to buy a router, read carefully about these reviews, because 5 star reviews sometimes give you misleading information.(I finally found these one star reviews of this router are mainly in 2008, so I am not sure what happend in the 2008 model.)If you friend happend to buy a router recently and without problem, simply buy the same model at stores with good return policy is definitely the easist way since it will save you time and energy.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"So stable it's boring", This was a no-brainer purchase: sets up in minutes, works out of the box for my XP workstation, Vista laptop, and MacBook. Took another couple of minutes to setup access key, access list, and some port-forwarding for BitTorrents and games. Been humming along for about a month not a single hiccup.
"First router I've bought, no problems at all.", This is the first router I've bought and so far it hasn't let me down. Bought this router to set up wireless in my dorm and it was easy even for somebody like me with little to no experience in setting up networks. So far stable connection, but I still prefer to be hardwired through the router when playing games. Flashed dd-wrt v24-sp1 with no problems, WPA2 works like it should. Meets all of my current needs for a relatively cheap price. Not to mention that I actually received my unit in the mail a day earlier then expected, which is always a plus.
"The Little Router That Could", This router is just the most amazing piece of internet equipment ever made. If people only knew what it could do..... With only small modifications this radio becomes a powerful networking tool. Not only, able to be an AP, DHCP router as Linksys intended, but also a client radio with power settings upto 251 mW. It can be configured as a VOIP router, or a VPN router. 2 or 3 of these units properly set up can be an entire network! And at these prices--just unbelievable!
"just installed and works but.....", I just received this router today from amazon. I have installed it couple of hours ago and seem to working perfectly. I have added wireless to my secured network my laptop and the PS3, both work fine. However I have try to flash this thing with with both DD-WRT and the Tomato while instruction for flashing it seem to be pretty easy somehow i wasn't able to open downloaded file on my desktop computer DD-WRT file was .bin file and now matter what i did i could not open it/get it running to flash my router. My understanding is that if I want the new GL router to be stable (I had WRT54G v8 which was nightmare) I should flash it with third party software. Can anyone who have successfully flashed theirs explain me how to open .bin file once downloaded onto desktop or maybe I'm downloading something i shouldn't. I have checked registry keys on my desktop and all OK but still unable to open this .bin from DD-WRT flash. Cheers
"Custom Firmware", Fantastic router! Bought it for the rants and raves on dd-wrt. worked like a champ. I bricked the router in my haste, but had it back up and running w/in the hour. Now I've got the SSL based openVPN set up and can access my home network from my laptop anywhere.
