"Stay away from Nero & Ahead software", Buggy bloat. And I thought Microsoft was bad. Nero used to be the best through version 6. Not anymore, stay away. You will find your windows corrupted, bugs in every module, $1.29/minute "support" by phone (you are supporting their mansions), and the program is very difficult to completely remove. Roxio or one of the free burning programs is a far better choice.

"Frustrating at best", This program has wasted SO MUCH of my time, rebooting, trying to figure out what I am doing wrong (only to find it wasn't me), and scouring their website forums for help. I still use the DVD authoring portion, as I am still trying to get familiar with the Vegas Video DVD Architect program (which appears to be much better), but even the DVD authoring portion of this seems designed for gradeschoolers as it is very limited in the variety of layouts/buttons/etc. it will allow you to use. The forums are usually of no help, as it is populated with aging Nero lackeys trying to tell you that what you want to do with their limited software is a flaw in your creativity, not their software! The CD-rom itself is not sealed within the package, so MAKE SURE YOU WANT THIS before you buy it since the disk isn't sealed and never was (I got mine as a gift that I changed my mind about--the store we got it from had it on the shelf with the security tape already breached by another customer who apparently brought it back and my significant other didn't notice this before taking it off the shelf. When we tried to return, they wouldn't accept it back because the disk inside was also not sealed).

If video quality is important, again AVOID--this program tends to want to re-encode just about everything you throw at it--it's definition of DVD-compliant is a very narrow one and you may end up waiting hour after hour for a re-encode to take place, only to find a big red error message when you get up in the morning--a message never deciperable or vague at best (could not insert file. Click OK). thanks.

I hope potential buyers of subsequent editions read these reviews before purchasing ANY of the Nero products. Skip this lemon and go right to Vegas Video and Vegas DVD Architect for your DVD-authoring needs.

"Terrible, Terrible, Terrible.....", Full of bugs, lack of technical support-CD and MP3 files skip-can not burn CD's without clicks. Impossible to to fix. Don't waste your money!


"BEWARE", I run a older version of Nero software. It is still upgradeable (according to them). I bought one of their plugin pkgs (downloaded). I installed it and it promptly broke my Nero version to the point I had to uninstall both the new pkg and my Nero version and then completely reinstall the previous Nero pkg.

I got NO help from their customer support.

I GOT A REFUSAL to refund my money.

So, BEWARE, you might get screwed too.

"Good software, bad manuals and explanations", NERO 7 Ultra Edition is an extremely comprehensive suite of software. Unfortunately, most of the applications contained within are more than most people (including myself) will ever need. Perhaps, this suite should be broken into three or four different products and sold seperately. For example, they could easily sell a DVD authoring product, a CD authoring product, a back-up ultility and music/MP3 software.

Pros: When you figure out how to work the individual components of this suite (see cons), they work well and seamlessly. I like its ability to combine VOB files into one file and then export it into a variety of different formats using Nero Vision. Nero Recode works well if you have burned home movies onto a DVD+R DL disc and need to switch it onto a single-layer disc for family members who do not have DL technology. The utility for burning data CDs or DVDs (the classic Nero Burning ROM)is quick and painless. I don't use the other applications much, but you have to be careful that Nero doesn't make itself the default player for all types of media.

Cons: The website is poor and the instructions are difficult to follow if you can find them. The FAQ section is out of date and doesn't address the major questions that I had when trying to figure this software out (possible it is a language issue). There are not even user forums to discuss problems with the software like many other companies offer. The software update utility did not work for me and I was unable to use it for months and therefore was unable to fix a bug that occasionally lead to a fatal Windows XP error. If you can update to the newest version (instructions to follow), things work better. I never had any compatability problems with my drives that I have seen a lot of people complain about.

Fixes: If you are unable to update the software usning the update utility, the following worked for me:

1) Download the latest upgrade from [...]
2) Using control panel (add and remove programs), remove Nero from your computer.
3) Install the new upgrade from your hard drive. The installation program will detect your valid software serial number and install the new version of Nero 7 Ultra. Be careful that Nero doesn't make itself the default player for all media files during installation.
4) The new update utility works 1000x better than the old one and there should not be any problems. The new version of Nero 7 Ultra is far superior to the original version as well.

Of course, the instruction on the web site do not tell you that you have to uninstall the old version before installing the new version. It took a long time and a lot of frustration to figure it out.

Overall:
1) The software worked very well for me. It worked faster than other applications that I tried.
2) The web site is bad, at best. The documentation is bad, at best. The update utility included with this suite is non-functional, but the upgrade works very well.
3) I give this high marks on the software performance, but subtract for simply too many applications included and for the horrible customer support and bad web site.
4) Since I value functionality over customer support, I give this 4 stars (I would give 3.5, but that is not an option).

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Stick with Nero 5 or 6", Nero 7 wants to prevent you from generating ISO files and instead wants you to use its NRG CD backup file system. Then it doesn't want you to burn WAV onto CD but forces you to invest in MP3 encryption so that you can burn MP3 to CD. The software is full of these horrible twists that Nero has gone from the best burning rom to the worst burning rom by simply making it harder for you to do what you want. I rolled back to Nero 5.5 and had a fully functional and top of the line burning rom again.

"NERO 7 -- A BUMMER", This software suite promises to do everything on earth, but doesn't tell us how. There is no useful help file. There are no tutorials or instructions on the website. And, Nero's support is a joke (just try to get a message through). I don't understand how a company that started out with the best burn program in the game has sunk to this.

"Good tool", We purchased Nero in order to make voice recordings for other people. The program has worked great. It does what it says, it allows wonderful editing, so you can make sure what you record is clean. We have also used it to record old cassettee tapes to CD. The program automatically records the track making it an easy and smooth process. We have been extremely happy with the low tech aspect, as we are not techy people. Easy to use. Does what it says it will do and a little more.

"Don't Buy this Product", This product is worse than useless. Right off the bat, the tutorials do not behave as depicted. What is left does not run properly. I spent hours and hours trying to make a CD from an LP, all to no avail.To make matters worse, this bug infested monstrosity, has very poor support. There is no 800 number. The version that I had came with 10 days of tecnical assistance that was useless! After the 10 days, technical assistance costs $1.29 a minute, plus the cost of the long distance call!
I REPEAT! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

"The "Reel Deal"", This package of utilities does most of what you would expect it to do. The wave editor is a nice, easy utility for mid level sound editiing. The video capture is clean and efficient. My only "complaint" is that you cannot incorporate still images into a video composite. Not sure why this is, it is the only software package I have used that would not allow this to be done. However, the package is worth double the price.
