"Mastercook" works just as well as the 4.0 version but found some of the directions incomplete and confusing (ie. printing out a cookbook). And I'm unable to find out how to print more than one recipe on one page.
"Don't get download version!" I got the download version 3 months ago, and have only just found out through an online discussion forum that all the problems I'm having using it are due to inherent defects in the download version. Apparently those who buy the CD will not experience these same issues (I don't know for certain though). Basically, the downloadable version functions more like a demo version; some features like export and import are limited or don't work at all (you can get recipes in one at a time, but can't select multiple recipes like the instructions tell you you can). A friend of mine and I have both had the same problems (we both bought it at the same time to swap recipes). Tech support is completely useless for these problems and customer service just keeps telling me to re-download it rather than deal with the problem of defective software (I would like them to just send the CD version that works).
I'm really disappointed, as it seems this could be nice software IF IT WORKED RIGHT.
So, if you're going to purchase this and are deciding between the download and CD version, get the CD. You'll have to wait a few extra days for delivery, but will avoid all the aggravation of the download version's bugs. They shouldn't even offer the download version, because it doesn't work right at all.
It's also worth noting that this software is not really very user-friendly for the beginner. Once you play with it a while, it has some nice features (buggy ones notwithstanding), such as being able to embed recipes (i.e., want to write a pie recipe? You can insert an ingredient as "Pie crust" and link to your pie crust recipe without typing it all out twice) but there is a steep learning curve. If you're adventurous and willing to randomly click ambiguous icons, you'll figure it out, but if you're someone who needs blatant, step-by-step instructions with really obvious menu options in software, you might struggle with this one.
However, even if you get nothing else out of it, the included recipes are worth the price of the software; you'd spend far more than that buying recipe books to get that many recipes. So at least I don't feel like I completely threw my money away getting defective software if I can't get it replaced with a functional version.
"Worth The Price" I found this updated version of the old "cooking light" program worth the price. It quickly analyzed any new recipe that was entered, however it took some time to figure out how to put a new recipe in. Would have been a great help to come with a pamphlet with quick start instructions. Once figured out, it is a great tool
"Organize your cooking" I've used various versions of this product for years, and it's great for storing and using your favorite recipes, creating shopping lists, etc. And now I've joined a Yahoo group of MC users who are extremely helpful in answering any questions you may have.
"MasterCook Deluxe" This is a good program for the professional and the non pro. It offers many fun and interesting recipies as well as tips

What our customer's say!
"Great tool", Fantastic product did all it claimed. I really like the fact that I can track the nutritional value of all the recipes as well as scale out the recipe. The only downfall of this product is the learning curve to using it. Most of it is intuitive, but several important features (like your personal Cookbook) was not clear to me and rather complicated.. I eventually "got it" by playing around, and reading online helps.
"Master cook deluxe", My goal purchasing the Mastercook Deluxe was to transfer my existing recipes to the program. I find I don't use the cookbooks given, but I mostly put in the recipes that I have. The down side is I have to manually enter the recipes rather than just transfer files. The positive side is that now my recipes are entered and I can include pictures and descriptions. There is an auto complete button that makes entering items easier. I would recommend anyone trying to organize recipes to use a computer program.
"MasterCook Deluxe", I am very pleased with the 9th edition of MasterCook. It is nice to know it is being updated from time to time after Sierra stopped publishing it. I am also glad it can be installed using Vista. I have had MasterCook for years and have added my own cookbook of nearly 650 recipes through time. It is very easy to use. I highly recommend it.
"Master Cook 9 on Vista", I have used Master Cook software for years and I love it. However, I recently purchased a new computer with Vista operating system. I have spent a great deal of time trying to get Master Cook 9 to work as designed with Vista. Although there are problems, the basic function of Master Cook is still good. The help function does not work without a patch and I have not been able to get the web import function to work. If you have an earlier version of Master Cook and have or plan to get Vista, don't bother. That said, I don't think I could cook or plan meals without Master Cook. My favorite recipes are in Master Cook and I am constantly finding new recipes online to import. Master Cook makes cooking more fun. Alas, if it was only more compatable with Vista.
"Mastercook", works just as well as the 4.0 version but found some of the directions incomplete and confusing (ie. printing out a cookbook). And I'm unable to find out how to print more than one recipe on one page.

"More difficult navigation than MC2", This was to be an upgrade from Master Cook II, because I got a new computer with Vista. The basic program contains more recipes, but the navigation is not at all intuitive. I'm having trouble transferring MC2 files to the personal recipes cookbook as well. I guess this is to be expected with the upgrade??? to Vista.
"Doesn't perform as promised", I've been struggling with Mastercook for months and I've given up. I've had problems with most of its features, but I'm most aggravated with the Shopping List and Web Import functions. Both have worked sporadically, and for no apparent reason at any given time, will stop working at all.
The shopping list function does not combine ingredients like it says it will. it says in the tutorial it will combine things like "green peppers" and "green bell peppers" but it doesn't. so i have to go in and change everything like that..."black pepper" to "pepper", "garlic" to "garlic cloves", etc. i even had an instance where i had "onions" twice on the list, but they didn't combine. other things did, though. again, no rhyme or reason to why it works some of the time.
I've had problems with the web import bar as well, sometimes performing the way its supposed to and other times it wouldn't. Now it's not importing at all. I get all the way to clicking on "save to mastercook" and it just stops, without actually giving me the option to choose a cookbook and completing the import.
I've sent several e-mails to Valu Soft and they've always responded with suggestions (which I've taken), but nothing has worked. I'm sending them another e-mail today to tell them I can't spend any more time trying to fix the problems (how many times should i have to uninstall/reinstall?) and will ask for a refund.
"GLAD I BOUGHT IT", I have used a computer cookbook to compile shopping lists and plan menus for the past 10 years. My old DOS based program worked great, but it had limitations! I tried another cookbook (Cook'N') and just found it cumbersome and difficult to use. This one is much better. It is easy to add ingredients, and to organize shopping lists the same way the store is organized. It is easy to plan menus and add them to the shopping list. The screen for entering recipes is user friendly.
"Mastercook is Half-Baked", It seems like a great idea, and with abundant recipes it contains a wealth of culinary genius, like an Incan temple buried under layers of hastle.
Mastercook nine is a sloppy interface without the rudimentary connectivity that modern users expect from the iPhone or the Xbox live. The idea of a truely comprehensive and convenient recipe database is brilliant, and Mastercook is hands above the best product so far. But it needs a sharp jolt, and a wake-up call to get with the times.
This product could reign supreme, but could easily be left behind if it continues to lolly-gag for another 9 editions.
"Master Cook Deluxe 9", Frankly I was quite disappointed in this product. I had to ask on line to even find out where to download the Tutorials! I'm very disappointed that I cannot easily scan written recipes into the program. I'm not a computer novice and I did not find it user friendly. The cookbooks included are great as is the nutritional anaysis.
