"Great Sound, great features"
This is a great Sound Card. Although it's the first card i ever purchased, it works great with Music and Games.

"calling out for a Linux driver"
Well I am very fastidious on sound, I want good sound even on a PC that's why I've always bought sound cards from Creative Labs.

And I respect Creative's hard work on the new architecture for the processor on its X-Fi product line that's why I bought this product even with the awareness of that it is Linux-challenged. I thought, they've got great engineers to work out the highly modularized ring architecture on the audio processor, there is a reason to believe that they are a _tech_ company, there is a reason to believe that they care about geeks, there is a reason to believe that there is a voice for geeks in this company, there is a reason to believe the Linux driver for X-Fi line is not just a dream. So I bought this card in Sep. 2006, and installed a Windows partition in my Linux workstation just in order to be able to appreciate the hard work of Creative's engineers' for the X-Fi processor. I waited patiently till year 2007. However the page claiming X-Fi's road map for the Linux driver doesn't exist anymore on Creative's domain.

I have the feeling that all the Linux users are simply abandoned by Creative, this is getting very, very emotional. Not mentioning that the coolest geeks and serious software engineers/computer scientists tend to use Linux or BSD, some distros of Linux like Ubuntu are attracting more and more non-techie users. Google earth has a Linux version and so does Skype. WAKE UP Creative! If Creative does not want to spend money on the Linux driver any more, at least he can release some tech specs allowing the GNU guys work out an ALSA solution. I really hope Creative hear this! Enough people are begging for a Linux driver on Creative's own forum, I've watched long enough to draw a conclusion that the product managers are not listening or even don't care about their own forum. So that I am posting here to add yet another tiny voice. Hope many many tiny voices together can finally wake up Creative.

Otherwise, the advanced technology for new audio processor on the X-Fi line really delivers more superior sound than other sound cards. The difference is even noticeable on very cheap speakers: a lot cleaner, more details and more powerful dynamics. The software package for Windows is reasonably decent. Comprehensive music editing/authoring packages are provided, a joy to use.

"Just what I needed"
I like to do a lot of home video taping. Time my wife gave me another project to convert her cass.tape into cd. with what I had in my computer which was a sound blaster card that came with it, I knew that was a hard task to do. So I chose the reseach this project some more. I look at adding a dazzel gadet, and upgrading my sound card which would be a little more than I wanted to pay. I started looking The Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum and software that came with it. The Price I payed for it was a bargain. The setup was a snap If you know a little about hardware. I notice a big differance in the sound quailty the proformance in recording and gaming. I am looking adding a surround sound speakers anything less would be a waste of a excellent card.

"Good product to edit audio in your computer."
I ordered this sound card as a special request from one of my customers, who wanted to upgrade from a "Soundblaster Live Value" card. He planned to use this card to edit music and transfer music from analog sources to digital formats, for instance, to produce CD's, MP3 and so on.

The card come with several useful accesories, including a full featured remote control, and a front panel which can be mounted inside a 5 1/4 bay. The front panel allows you to accede to the inputs of the sound card without having to go to the back of the computer.

The installation was a breeze, and the bundled software is very complete.

What our customer's say!

"Great sound, bad design", As far as audio quality goes, the card sounds great, but the design is terrible. Initially, I really liked the idea of the front breaker box and being able to use the remote control with it. That is pretty much why I bought it. Now I've realized it's basically useless. There is no reason to have audio outputs on the breaker box. You only need a headphone output and that's it. Inputs should be on the front box so you can plug in your digital camera, DVD player, etc, transfer your files, then remove it. The ONLY optical audio output is on the front breaker box. Since I have a case with a panel that closes, this means I cannot close the front panel. I actually had to take a drill, drill a hole in the case door in front of the optical connection, and then thread the optical input through it to use my case with the door closed. Anytime I want to open the case door, I have to remove the audio connection, open the door, then put it back in. I can't even begin to describe what a huge hassle this is.

Also, to use the remote you'll need line of sight instead of RF, so if you have a case with a front door on it t will need to remain open the entire time. The remote is awful anyway. It has a ton of controls on it, but only a few you'll actually need. I don't need 30 buttons on the AUDIO remote control for my computer. If I want to adjust the levels, I am going to do that from my computer, not from my couch where I can't see what I'm doing. The front breaker box also doesn't sit flush with your case, it sticks out a little bit and is bezeled. Not a big deal, but why not make it flush like the rest of 5.25" components? Lastly, the cable connecting the breaker box to the audio card is not a rounded cable, it looks like an old IDE cable. So it's going to take up space in your box and look bad.

If I didn't have speakers with an optical input and want to use that, I would just disconnect the breaker box completely, but at this price point, this card is designed for audio enthusiasts, and anyone spending that kind of money for the card is likely going to want to use the optical input.

"Buying this card is a crap shoot", I'm sure this card is excellent for some people, but the complaints from nvidia motherboard owners holds true for me; I have tried 2 different amd/nvidia motherboards, and in both cases I had horrible crashing/freezing problems. These cards are expensive and I think unless you can verify ahead of time that the card will work in your system you are taking a big gamble.

"ETA for drivers", "Due to additional requirements in the Windows Vista driver certification process, the release of the final signed drivers for the Sound Blaster range will move out beyond our initial projected date until early March. The current Beta drivers are still valid for use under Vista and are required to take advantage of the benefits of Creative ALchemy with the Sound Blaster X-Fi range to restore multichannel audio and EAX to your games. We appreciate your understanding for this change to the schedule as we work to bring you the best experience for your Sound Blaster series cards while adhering to the requirements of this new operating system."
From Creative's forums

"creative blaster X-Fi Platinum", i have not yet been able to fully play around with all of the feature. but from what i have seen so far is top notch. if your sound is not working, then go into your diagnostic and change your speaker setting. also i reccommend their cable for this sound card. i give it a four because i have not fully tested the product out.

"Creative X-Fi Platinum", I was lucky enough to find this audio component with a generous rebate. It outperformed by expectations under Microsoft XP (SP2), however I am having difficulties with the beta drivers from Creative to integrate this component in Windows Vista Home Premium. The console will not execute. Creative will not support tech questions on a beta product. I am at the mercy of Creative until they finish a final driver for the X-Fi Platinum. Great product when it works.

"Amazing", I am probably one of the most musically/sound impared people on the planet. I rarely notice the difference between my onboard sound systems and my sound cards. I only notice substantial jumps in sound technology. I am very reserved about getting soundcards, as I dont think I ever notice a difference between 16 channels and 40000 channels of sound. I have gone from a adlib, to a SB, to SB16, to Audigy LS and now to this card. That being said, this is probably the last card I will even pick up or need. The sound is a subsantial leap ahead of my other cards, and is amazing clear. I love the front panel for adding my headphones if I need them. I couldnt be happier with the price I paid or the product itself.

Amazing buy. I cant say enough good things. I dont speak geek about the improvements, its like art.. you know what you like, and I love this card.

"Great sound card", Everything I have tried to do with the sound card has been easy to do. Great sound, great hardware and good software.

"I'm a recording engineer", I have had the X-Fi Platinum for about one month. I upgraded from Soundblaster 5.1, a big upgrade. I have an Asus Motherboard, AMD processor and NVidia video and have not had any problems at all. I got the card to record vinyl to CD. I have about 500 albums. The advantage of the connections straight from the amp to the card were the selling point.
I have recorded some albums over 30 years old and they sound fine. The recording software that came with the card works just fine from simple record to three levels of effects. I have put recordings from the records on my mp3 and burned cd's. Better sound than a casette tape and I've just scratched the surface with the software features.
I have a great improvement in overall sound and there are many uses for the features on the card and the software applications that come with it. All I need is more knowledge on how to use all of the features. The card is expensive but worth it, particularly if you have a specific use for it. Take the plunge and enjoy the best sound available, you deserve it.

"Xrteme X-Fi hi-fi!!", First off, not a perfect product far from infact, takes a bit of tinkering to work right and the instructions arn't really clear. I had the Audigy 2 ZS before this sound card and it was a simple install card, install drivers and your good to go; huge improvement over the onboard AC97. This was the first problem, the fact that I had drivers on my system from a previous Sound Blaster card, had to sweep them from my system. my next problem was that the X-Fi drivers that come with the card are beta at best and have conflicts with motherboard chipsets and video cards, but nothing that updates from there website won't fix (the original drivers must be installed first). Now why would I give a sound card that ships with sub par drivers a 4 out of 5, the sound is incredible. If the Audigy was step up from the onboard, then the X-Fi is a giant leap. Great for games and movies!

"Great Sound but Buyer Beware", I loved the sound I got from this card, but unfortunately it did not play nice with my ASUS ALN8 chipset and AMD processing. I would get a BSOD at least once - sometimes twice a day - caused by the Creative drivers. After 30 days i returned the product. I would suggest visiting Support Forums regarding Creative drivers with AMD processing and/or ASUS ALN8 chipset. Creative Support is aware of this issue but admitted there is no quick fix in sight. If they create a fix I would gladly re-purchase.
