"The new Photoshop Elements 4.0" The new version of Elements (4.0) does almost anything most normal people will want to do to photos. It is still replete with Photoshop's well known user hostility but, with patience, is a valuable tool to have. I do not like the requirement at the outset to decide what you will eventually do with the photo, but that is just an annoyance.
"Making photo/video manipulation and DVD authoring easy" Adobe has put together a very powerful suite of photo manipulation and editing tools in Adobe Photoshop 4. After you have prepared your photos, slides, or videos, Premier Elements 2 makes the DVD authoring easy. I found that getting started with Premier Elements 2 to be a little challenging so I bought a self teaching guide through Amazon, which gave a lot more in-depth look at the application.
Although I gave the bundled package a rating of 5, I think it is only fair to caution those just getting started. Adobe Premier Elements 2.0 is a somewhat demanding application and you should be aware that it will operate best on the more robust computers. I would not recommend this product for use on a minimum requirement computer. It will be painfully slow and cause a lot of aggravation. Also Premier Elements may not recognize digital video clips from some digital still cameras. For example: I use a Canon SD-550 digital camera, which is capable of taking short or long video clips. I was surprised when I found that Premier Elments 2 would not display the video portion, only the audio. That led to me taking a trip to the Adobe Forum (which is a very good source) and I discovered that this was one of the little oddities with Premier Elements 2. I solved the problem by purchasing a video converter by AVS. It was inexpensive, but I still think that Premier Elements should handle these files without requiring a person to purchase a converter. I want to make it clear that this irregularity seems to only impact still digital cameras shooting movie clips. The reason I was dissapointed on this issue is because I plan to use my still camera as a short movie camera, which the Canon does a credible job at. Another issue that I was unaware of was that importing extremely high resolution stills into Premier Elements really slows the process down and can cause crashes. Given the optimum resolution for showing video on a television set I found that the solution was to resize the pictures, if they already exist, in Photoshop 4. If you are shooting for the first time simply adjust your camera to a resolution that doesn't exceed approximatel 2500 X 2500 pixels. Of course, if your shooting for fine resolutions for photography then let 'er rip at the highest resolutions.
Outside of that I am really pleased with the applications. I have tried or used a number of DVD authoring applications, prior to this bundle and I found this set to be the best for my needs and am relying on it for my authoring needs.
P.S. Since this writing the new bundle Photoshop 5.0 and Premier Elements 3.0 has been released. I understand that it has some very nice improvements.
"Premire Elements uses a lot of resources" I purchased the package primarily to edit videos of youth football and figured why not get Photoship Elements while I was at it. I can easily burn video with the MyDVD software that came with the computer, but editing clips was difficult or impossible. My thoughts on Premire Elements is that 1) It can do a lot of stuff and has serious editing capabilities, you can cut and move clips around at will and overlay sound as you like, etc. 2) I did not find it particularly user friendly to learn at first and things that were easy on MyDVD are difficult to figure out, but once you figure it out it is not too bad 3) it uses a lot of computer resouces. For short clips it will do fine, but for clips of over 30 minutes it can take several hours to process/transcribe/burn the DVD. I have a gig of memory and an AMD 3500+ chip. It also uses more hard drive space than MyDVD.
"Adobe Photoshop" This is a great product for basic creations using your photos. The scrapbook is easy to make and comes out looking pretty nice. Making a creation from scratch using text boxes is a little more difficult, but I think I can master it pretty easily.
"Adobe Photoshop 4.0 - "Think Twice"" I've used Photoshop 2.0 for several years and found it did everything I wanted to do. While 2.0 was not 100% "user friendly," I slowly learned the scheme of things and got my pictures quickly tweeked up in good shape. It's pretty much a snap for me now.
I bought Photoshop 4.0 (Don't ask me why when 2.0 was worked OK.) and hoped for the best. I actually bought the Photoshop/Premier package, but haven't installed Premier yet. Premier will hopefully replace my Pinnacle ver. 10 program.
For me, it seems "everything has changed." It's like a new program ... nothing looks familiar. I went through the "Guided Tour" and thought "Gee, that looks easy," but alas, when I tried it ... i couldn't seem to duplicate the results. In fact, I have had several episodes of computer lock-up, requiring a "CONTROL-ALT-DELETE" program termination. (New 128-bit dual channel processor computer ... Top of The Line; two gig's of RAM.)
I am finding that I tend to fall back to 2.0 to do my work. Maybe when I have the time, I'll figure 4.0 out, but until then, 2.0 will be my daily workhorse.
I do like the 4.0 ability to work with RAW files and I find that 4.0 has somewhat improved on the horrible 2.0 "HELP" system. Adobe still tends to "talk over my head" and assume I know more jargon than I do. (I have 40-years of computer experience, harking back to programming VACUUM TUBE computers!) I tried the 4.0 "help" file once, step-by-step and it didn't work! Oh well ... probably my error.
My recommendation: "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It."

What our customer's say!
"Great editing software!", I recently scanned several ancestral photos that had damage to them. With Photoshop Elements, I was able to clean up damaged, faded and unclear areas. The results were great. The photos were clear, color was in the correct tone and damage to the photos was reduced. I would only suggest a user guide to answer questions when they arise. I still consider it a great software.
"Photoshop", Wish I had bought this one earlier. Great manipulation of photos and pretty easy once you get some things figured out. This is more of an experienced users software, than for a beginner, but both will be very happy with it.
"Exceptional Programs", The two programs interact nicely. I was able to easily send pictures from Photoshop Elements to Premiere Elements to make a slide show movie. Both my teenagers have been using Photoshop Elements to cut and paste my mug shot in to other pictures. Permiere Elements is easy to use for movies. The bundled package saved me a few dollars.
"Still a great bundle", Even though a newer version is out, this is probably the best choice for the multimedia hobbiest. PSE4 has a lot of great features and I'm always impressed with how much depth there is in the program. I've created many great movies with Premiere Elements, and though it lacks a lot of fancy features, it has just about everything you need to put together a solid film. Playback is choppy with MOV files, but who really cares. Overall this is a wonderful buy and cheap bundle.
"Breath of Fresh Air", I have used Pinnacle products for years and the last one was Studio 9. Pinnacle Studio seemed to always have problems, and I almost lost interest with video editing all together. Knowing Adobe's reputation, I decited to try Premiere Elements 2.0 and Photoshop Elements 4.0. I loaded them in my computer and they worked without at any problems. I have ued Premiere quite a bit, but haven't used the photoshop at all. If photoshop works as well as Premiere, I will be very pleased with my purchase.

"Photoshop Elements 4 Plus Premiere Elemnets 2", Some excellent tools and capabilities of which I am still exploring. Make sure you go the Elements website and join their group to get additional tips.
"Not good for lots of clips", I came back from vacation with hundreds of small mpg clips from Sony HDD camcorder, each averages about 40 seconds. PE2.0 crashes while loading about 100 clips. Called Support, they admited PE2 not able to handle this type of job and advised to get MPEG editor (more money, sigh). In addition I found: - very slow to load and rendering - Export funtion of MPG2 clips results in jerky mpg2 output
"Best Bang For Your Buck In Photo Editing!", After purchasing a new camcorder, I wanted the best software available to help me compile professional quality slideshows and video. This particular software was the most recommended from audio electronic specialists. I did all the comparisons with Vegas, Cinemagix, Pinnacle, Broderbund, Nova...I looked at them all. By far, Adobe leads in user friendly functions and ease of install. I had zero problems installing on my HP computer and am amazed how quickly a new user can put a program together. I was clicking and dragging pictures, added text, changed fades in and out, made nice transitions, sometimes a different transition for each picture...so many to choose from... I didn't use any of the pre-programmed themes available but I can see where that'd be nice for certain applications or if you want a cookie cutter program. There are many features that make this program superior including a wide variety of graphics and editing tools. I'm very impressed with this software, it's a better value than most higher priced but less performing competitors out there. I'd buy this again, definitely!
RECOMMENDED!
"Great piece of software", This is a great combo package, I just upgraded from the earlier versions, and well worth it, especially for the Premiere Elements part of it. Even though this is a consumer version of Adobe for the home, it is a sophisticated piece of software, and not for the faint of heart. I strongly suggest buying the "Premiere Elements for Dummies" book, it helped me a lot, and provides a good stucture or framework to go about capturing and editing video, through to creating DVD's. It also provides good tips on where, and how to store your raw video, plus tons of other useful advice.
While this review may sound like a plug for the book, I would offer this advice, while this product is great, and produces professional looking dvd's, it is not the easiest software to get to grips, and Im strongly suggesting the book to compliment the software.
Photoshop is easier to use, and still a fantastic product.
One other suggestion, and this applies to all video editing software, you need a decent amount of memory, I have 512MG, and it struggles a bit, but I think 1GB, or more, would be the preferred choice.
In summary I would recommend this product if you enjoy creating ,editing video, and are prepared to spend some time getting up to speed and reading up on how to make best use of the software. If you are wanting something that you will quickly get up and going out the box, this is not the product for you. It is a feature rich product, with plenty to offer the video creation enthusiast.
"Big bang for the buck", I probably should have only given it 4 stars because: 1) it's not perfect, and 2) this is my first video editor, so I have nothing to compare it to. But I gave it 5 stars because I'm just so impressed with what I've been able to do. I highly recommend this software, ...but ONLY if you have a computer than can handle it.
This software needs a lot of resources. I have a Dell E510 3.0GHz, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM w/ separate video card. It has been adequate, but frankly, I wish I had more. Even relatively short (12 minute) slideshows take an hour to encode and burn onto a DVD. And I thought 160GB would be more than I would ever need, but I'm already looking for a second HDD just for video editing. You even need SP2 (WinXP). In short, you'll need a pretty decent computer to run this.
PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 4.0 (PSE): I've been a big digital photography fan since Photoshop 3.0, all the way to CS. I recently switched to Elements at home mainly because of the price, and I have not been disappointed. PSE has virtually everything a hobbyist needs, plus several consumer-oriented features that the professional version doesn't have.
It has taken me some getting used to (from the professional version), but I really like what PSE can do. It is easy to organize and "quick fix" still images. I did my first slideshow completely in PSE, and it came out great - fades, titles, music, audio commentary, and pan & zoom effects. ...All without needing the manual or help section.
PREMIERE ELEMENTS 2.0 (PE): This is my first experience with a video editor. It is not nearly as intuitive as PSE is (at least to me), especially the pan & zoom effects. However, the more I use it, the more I realize just how much it can do above & beyond PSE. (NOTE: As some people mentioned, the Adobe manuals are virtually worthless, and help is only a little better. You have to go to the Adobe Forum to get your questions answered.)
I do not own a video camera. I simply wanted PE to integrate QuickTime movies (taken with my Nikon CoolPix 7600) into my slideshows. And now my slideshows will never be the same - movie clips, animated titles, music, and great control over tying everything together. Plus many of the features we've come to know and love (and need) in Photoshop (filters, adjustments, etc.) are now available for our videos in PE. I even used the posterize & spherize filters on a QuickTime movie. I've only just begun and my slideshows are already knocking people's socks off (OK, maybe just one sock, but I'm still learning. ...And I have MUCH to learn).
Finally, both programs integrate well with each other. I do the still image editing and organizing in PSE, then exported it to PE for the movie editing, soundtrack, pan & zoom, and titles. From there it's right to a DVD, then to the TV. No more slide projectors to lug around - a DVD is much easier to carry (and if someone doesn't have a DVD player, get one of those 7" portables to show it on). I was so impressed by the finished product, I found myself applauding when the "THE END" faded in. I think you'll love this software.
