Others say...
"AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE !" This is the worst written piece of software in creation. It would get 0 stars if it were an option. I develop software for a living, and needed this for a business, so I dug into it deep. What an overweight piece of junk ! The folks at SAGE, need to get over themselves...this is just contact management stuff...a glorified address book. This isn't missile defense software or anything...there's no need for this to take up 50mb RAM and 100's of MB hard drive space, and take 5 minutes for it to load on a Pentium 4 3GHZ ! It's cumbersome, super buggy, the documentation sucks, the tech support is good for only 30 days, and you'll be on hold for 29 of them. Don't even think of importing data from a text file or Excel...it is so poorly documented and buggy, that you may as well get temps to key it in for you. And multi user support? More like multi headache...they have a convoluted synchronization process like Lotus Notes...more undocumented complexty...oh by the way, the whole thing requires a run time of MS SQL Server...which will be sure to crash your system occasionally. At my job, I had to evaluate some timesheet software for a department of about 30 people..one of them is called Timesheets, and it's made by the same company - SAGE .... After seeing a quick demo, I saw so many things that reminded me of this POS that I nicely told the Sage Sales Rep that they're out of the running, through no fault of the person, but b/c the software is so bad. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - don't buy this or any other version from this company...write something quick in MS Access... pay someone...save yourself the time and aggravation that I went through.
"2006 ACT" Do not spend a penny on this software (If you can call it software) If 2006 ACT is running, you cannot possibly run anything else. This software boggs everything down and renders you computer basically useless. The software on the surface looks great, however it is impossible to use. STAY AWAY!!
"One star only because zero stars isn't an option" Could not agree more w/ the naysayers. While speed isn't an issue everything else is. Backed up the db - all my phone numbers disappeared. Their email - JOKE. Initially, once in awhile I would open it up and my folders (other than the standard ones) were gone and all the others were empty. Closing email and restarting it seemed to take care of the problem. Then one day, gone never to return. Switched to using Outlook thru Act and same thing. Worked intially, now all my email is gone except when I go into Outlook itself - thankfully they're still there. The PDA version.... another boondoggle. When I clear an appointment it freezes. Continuously. When I reset the Palm the appointment is properly cleared but then when I sync, sometimes that gets updated in the desktop, sometimes not. I understand the rush to market and subsequent bug fixes but this is over the top. My suggestion is to work a paper system before buying this piece of... you get the idea.
"Does not integrate with Outlook as Advertised" I upgraded from ACT! 2006 to ACT! 2007 because of an email that I recieved from ACT touting the new benefits of ACT's integration with Microsoft Outlook.
I STILL am NOT ABLE to send an email from ACT! using pop3 without Outlook being open and running in the backround. The send/recieve button in ACT only ques my message to be sent when Outlook is open and then the send/recieve function within Outlook must be triggered manually or by the auto send /recieve function.
This was a problem with ACT! 2005/2006 and they have documented it in their knowledge base and tech support suggest what they call a "work arround" to the problem. This "work around" is actually leaving an outlook window open all the time in the backround and setting Outlooks automatic send/reciev to a short time interval.
Who wants to have to be working in both programs? Where Does ACT! get the nerve to send out an email to existing customers bragging about their great new integration with Outlook. This is an old problem. FIX IT.
"If you are a Sys Admin Beware!" This review is for the Sys admins: ACT installs Microsoft MSDE (free version of SQL) for each computer running ACT. The problem with this is if you install the centralized database on a server and want to backup the SQL Instance, it wont let you! You cannot use the SQL Enterprise Manager to open the instance. The only user that is allowed access to the instance is the "sa" user. ACT does not want anyone to view their tables unless you buy a special program from them!
Its a nightmare backing up ACT. You cant copy and paste the database from one computer to another. When you create a new database in ACT, ACT stores something in the SQL instance. So if you copy the ACT db to another computer and click File -> Open Database, and choose the ACT db, it will give an error. I am not sure if there is an automated way to backup ACT but I hope there is.
BEWARE!

What our customer's say!
"I use it all the time", ACT 2006 is definitely better than ACT 2005 because it's not as clunky but it still required some calls to tech support to get the synchronization working but I still love it. Compared to what's out there, I think you get a lot of bang for your buck.
"ACT -- happy", I've used ACT 2000 (!!!) for years and years now. I've never had a single OS problem. It's lived through computer upgrades to OS and hard drive moves. Not a hiccup anytime. I've never been inclined to upgrade as the upgrades seem to take away features I have in ACT 2000.
"Training Analyst who adores Act!", Okay, for those of you who are completely new to ACT 2006, this review is coming from someone who had no experience in using this software nor any prior knowledge of this product.
I know reading most of these reviews sound very discouraging and in some cases down right horrific. However, I have been working with ACT 2006 for over a month. I've downloaded it onto my HP laptop. I can truely say that I prayed before loading it, but I don't think it was necessary because ACT has been wonderful to me.
My profession only requires me to keep contact information and activities. It allows me to customize the fields, lists and reports to meet my needs and I think that's just awesome. I don't use the sales module at all. I was totally unorganized before using ACT, thus the reason why I took my chances.
ACT is a downloadable product. You must meet the minimum system requirements. Like many other software requirements, when you do not meet them, it causes havoc on your computer. If you have an old computer that doesn't have the space or if you have a computer that already have a bunch of crap on it, of course the programs will be slow and in some cases, shut your computer down. That's with any product. For me, when I am utilizing ACT, I only have a few things running at the same time(Outlook, 1 internet browser and maybe a MS document).
Also, most times I don't even have outlook opened because I am able to send emails through ACT and read them as well. It integrates nicely if you ask me.
This software is so affordable on Amazon if you need a quick solution to managing contacts. If you have any questions, please email me at satinwaves@aol.com.

"0 Stars - ACT 2006 does not even deserve one.", I too have been a user of ACT! for over 10 years. The previous versions before SAGE got hold of it were great. This 2006 version SUCKS! How I see it, they want to sell you support after the original low price software purchase. The support is AWFULL!! I sat on hold for 29 minutes several times before I got the "I see you have not purchased our extended support plan" comment. I get all kinds of error messages for no reason at all. I cannot use ANY of my previous templates I designed over the last 10 years. I tried printing a simple contact report, guess what, no contact information was printed, only the header and footer. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AND TIME ON THIS HORRIBLE PRODUCT. You've been warned!
"Nothing but problems with Act 2006", I have used Act for close to 10 years. My previous version Act 4.0 was a much better program than 2006. I have experienced too many problems to mention. Maybe 2007 is better. I'm considering using a different program altogether.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"DON'T DO IT!!", I've got experience with every version of ACT! since 2. All were good except 4, which had problems, but nowhere near as many problems as 2006 and 2007. Just read the user's reviews on Amazon if you want verification. This product's a complete FAILURE. I run a Windows network using a different CRM tool and would NEVER consider using ACT! under any circumstance. The problems I had during its installation and use are myriad, and there's no excuse for BOZOWARE like this. BUY A DIFFERENT CONTACT MANAGER, because this publisher is absolutely dishonest!
The 2006 and 2007 versions should be SCRAPPED, the publisher should give all it's customers refunds AND start over. Sell the name to a company that'll do right by ACT!'s formerly good reputation, because they've released TWO POOR VERSIONS IN A ROW!!
"Slow and buggy", On the recommendation of a friend who uses an earlier version, I bought ACT! 2006. The product is very slow. Not only is ACT! itself slow, it appears to run a SQL runtime at system start, which on my system (a reasonably fast midrange system with a lot of memory) slowed down system startup, even when I wasn't using ACT!. ACT! was too unreliable to actually use for anything that mattered.
Even running the ACT! uninstaller failed. On my system, the SQL runtime now reports an error every time my system starts, because part of ACT! is gone, but the SQL runtime still starts. This means that trying ACT!, planning to uninstall the product if it does not work well, may not be a good idea. You may spend more time uninstalling the software than you did using it.
In general, the software looks like a good idea, executed very poorly. If your life revolves around tracking contacts, the product might be worth considering, if you can deal with the unreliable behavior. My friend who uses an earlier version reports a completely different experience, so this might be another example of a software product that used to be good, but is now useless.
"ACT! 6 Saps your Memory, Clogs your CPU and Crashes your Palm Tungsten W !", The first thing I noticed after upgrading to ACT! 2006 was that my whole system runs slower now, sometimes painfully slow.
I checked my Task Manager (on Windows XP Home Edition) and found that it now automatically preloads and runs both ACT! 6 and SQL Server in the background at boot up, even if you don't intend to use ACT! this session at all.
SQL Server can suck up from 7 MB to 40 MB of RAM, even when you haven't opened the ACT! application, while ACT! 6 can suck up a similar amount even if you haven't opened it.
Because of this, I'd suggest you not purchase ACT! 6.0 unless you have 1024 MB of system RAM, not 512 MB as they suggest.
The other thing that upgrading to ACT! 6.0 did was to update the corresponding version of ACT! on my Palm Tungsten W. Opening the ACT! application on my Palm Tungsten W now crashes this unit, destroying the only purpose I had for buying a Palm Tungsten W in the first place, which was to carry my entire ACT! 6.0 address book around with me when I'm out of the office.
If you also run ACT! on your handheld Palm unit, you definitely don't want this upgrade!
"Still a powerful and fantastic program!", Don't be discouraged by all the nay-sayers -- Act! 2006 works well if you have the system resources to handle it. I run Windows XP Home version with 1.0 GB of RAM and have very little issue with the speed. 2,400 contacts in my database and 5 years of data in my calendars. Great features and incredible customization options. It has never crashed on me. I also synch to my Palm Treo 700p with the new Act! for Palm OS -- works just fine. Looking forward to Act! 2007.
"ZERO - speed/stability", I've used Act! for 8 years and have faithfully upgraded with every release that shipped. When they switched to the bloated MS SQL Server installation, I had to abandon the product upgrades. I was hopeful with each subsequent version that they'd cleaned up their Act! Not the case. I still use my old, unsupported version and will apparently have to switch to another vendor. :-(
