"Don't expect any help"
Very Buggy software that needs some rewriting.
When you email problems the responses are either unreadagle of just useless. Nuance are the new owners and it looks like they are trying to milk a cash cow without feeding it.

"Omnipage 15 Great"
Omnipage 15 is the world's number one OCR program that is easy, and accurate to use. It is great to edit, scan and save documents. Another great feature is that Omnipage 15 recognizes 100 different languages.

"Not as good as ABBYY Fine Reader . . ."
I work in the Digital Library world and after testing both OmniPage Pro 15 and ABBYY Fine Reader 8.0 before embarking on OCR work-flows for a major digital repository, the results were by far better with ABBYY especially with faded or 'garbled' text from bad photocopies and other secondary sources. OmniPage is a better known product, but don't be fooled: ABBYY is the real deal. (they both claim 99% accuracy and most people say they are the same. . .after testing both, you find out that they are not even in the same league).

The only thing I can say about OmniPage is its interface is easier to work with and its automated workflows are a snap: but if your looking for consistent OCR--go with ABBYY.

"Inconsistent results, expensive support"
The product performs inconsistently. It failed miserably when it tried OCR on a page printed in comic sans, for instance, mistaking a's for g's, and @'s for a's, etc. In short it was worthless for scanning in something as simple as a list of names and email addresses.

It's "OK" when doing some fonts. And generally manages to figure out where the images are. The interface is supposed to be simple, but is counter-intuitive, and confusing to learn.

Scanners are "iffy" -- may work, may not, so make sure you test in the 30 day trial period.

Support? Forget unless you want to pay. Not even a single support call is included in the package.

I will NOT buy or upgrade with this company again unless they are willing to provide at least a minimum of a couple of support calls or emails.

I've had almost all the versions before this, and to be honest like this one less than what was before.

If you want to try it, buy from a source that will honor the 30-day money-back trial period. You may need it.

"Easy to use"
I read several reviews and was little hesitant to purchase this software. I have a basic Hp all in one printer and so far the software is wonderful and easy to use. I have really saved some time with this software.

What our customer's say!

"uninstall problems", I would have given 0 stars if possible. I bought this program to scan some pages and had a lot of problems, so I uninstalled it. Unfortunately the program seems to have taken over my scanner and every picture I scan now is unreadable. A popup tries to reinstall Omnipage and won't let me open the picture files any other way. So all my scanned pictures are unusable. A company spokesperson said I could get technical help unintalling. Yet when I call the number he provided, a machine tells me I need to pay $19.95 per minute! Then puts me on hold!

"Spend a few dollars more and get ABBYY Fine reader. A truely accurate OCR software application.", Having been the sole IT hardware person for over 14 years [at my current location. In IT hardware/software for over 20 years career-wise].

I have personally owned over 5 scanners, many in the under $200 range.

I have installed/setup/tested/used over 30 scanners and their associated software packages. (and worked with separately purchased retail boxes of omnipage OCR software).

The majority of OCR packages I have installed were OMNIPAGE.
I have also worked with READIRIS, ABBYY and some that are no longer in business.

Omnipage was always a middle-of-the-road performer for me.
Regardless of the version.

In my work environment,I worked with higher priced scanners.
So the price range of scanners I have tested is quite broad.

The only program that ever really blew me away was ABBYY FINE READER.
I have used their basic sprint reader, up through the Fine reader.

With Scansoft it seemed to be a 50/50 or 60/40 split.
Half your time scanning and then half your time "Reviewing" those items that Omnipage could NOT decypher.
Nothing is so aggravating as a program that throws it's arms up in the air and says,"Hey Mr/Ms user. I can't determine what this text is.
Please decypher it for me and type in the correct word(s).

I mean heck, the whole concept here is that the software should do the DECODING.

As others have noted, support is costly.

For a refreshing OCR program, go get a copy of ABBYY Finereader.
I am still using version 5, mostly because I don't currently do enough OCR'ing to justify buying a current version.

NOTE: Last time I checked with ABBYY, you can QUALIFY for their upgrade pricing by either:
1. switching from one of their competitor's to ABBYY.
2. Upgrading one of your older versions of ABBYY.

They (ABBYY) did not care what competitor version I was upgrading from.
I could have upgraded from Omnipage 8 or 9, and still got the same
good pricing deal as someone upgrading from [example] omnipage 14.
ABBYY is quite liberal in that regard.

[Sidenote: Too many places these days have changed their upgrade polcy. Many will not offer upgrade pricing unless it was from the very last version of their software.]

I'm not a big fan of Readiris, but I would buy their program before
getting omnipage 15.

Just my .02 cents.

"Program is really good...If it doesn't crash", I found the program easy to install. The interface could be more user-friendly, but not out of line with other OCR software I've tried. The document conversion itself is excellent. I found very few errors, and it is certainly nice to see an OCR program handle and maintain formatting. I've been using it to scan in articles for reprint in a historical publication. Some of these articles come from a source with three columns and pictures. Omnipage 15 handled these flawlessly.

Now for the big drawback. Halfway through the project, anything I scanned crashed Microsoft Word, losing any information I'd worked on. I am under a very intense deadline for the publication. Nuance has a chance to rehabilitate the bad reputation of the OCR development community, plagued by a realistic question of whether to retype from the original source or to use the OCR. It's still a gamble on whether OCR products save time in the long run...The verdict is still out in my case.

"Rubbish", This product is absolutely horrible.
Even activating it is a chore.
Way too many errors in conversion and
way too many bugs in program to be useful.

Sorry to say it, but it's really bad.

Learn from my mistake and do not purchase this product.
I am sure there are other OCR programs out there that are way better.

"Best OCR software available", I purchased this product because I like to keep all my documents filed on my computer. I am able to save time and effort using Omnipage 15. It converts all of my documents exactly like my original and converts PDF files into editable documents.
Time and ease of use plus many other tasks are everything this product provides the user. I just like it so much 2 of my friends are using it now.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Another customer who'll be taking advantage of the 30-day refund", I bought OmniPage 15 yesterday morning as a download, and have been trying to activate it ever since. After several calls to customer service, forty minutes on hold to speak with a tech rep (who emailed me two links that don't open), I'm no closer to being able to use this program. It seemed to work okay in the few intro uses allowed before you had to activate to continue, but even then it kept wanting to reload with every page I scanned in.

The product might be a good one--I'm not a fair judge of that--if only you can get it to work. As others have pointed out, tech support is expensive. If my experience is any measure, it's also worthless.

Customer service is unresponsive, unpleasant, and unprofessional. In one call to Customer Service, I was asked if I typed the letters in the serial number as capitals and the O's as zeroes. When assured that I had, several times, she replied, "Then I can't help you--call the tech department," and abruptly hung up. To add irritation to insult, in the forty minutes I was on hold with the tech department, I listened to repeated assurances that a "reepersentative" would be with me shortly.

Not recommended.

"Great Time Saver", I recently purchased Omnipage 15 as I had some old articles I wanted to edit and archive. I had been told that Omnipage would do the job. It did not disappoint. It was fast, kept the format, and as a bonus had made the PDFs it created searchable. I got through my original project so quickly; I have been using it on other documents. It has done a great job. Even the ones that are poor quality have come out great. I highly recommend this program. It has been well worth the money.

"Avoide Scansoft 14 or 15", Both versions of Scansoft cause my installer to have problems. Mainly it tries to re-install Softscan every time I start up Softscan. Also It has started to try and reinstall Softscan if I try to right click on a JPG. There is very little to no chance of getting any help from Scansoft (Nuance)to debug this problem. Save your money and buy some thing else.

"buggy software", Omnipage is a buggy piece of software which is prone to throwing errors and mysterious crashes (often occuring at the end of a lengthy process). Nuance provides no support and when you attempt to contact them they want $9.95 for an email question or $19.95 for a phone question. You might expect this from an inexpensive piece of software but for the cost of Omnipage you would expect some support. I recommend finding something more reliable from a company that provides some measure of support.

"OmniPage 15 OCR ", This product appears to be very powerful and no doubt it is however, the thing I need it for is to scan. I find its character recognition to be so so! Surely it should do a better job on typed letters. I find myself having to edit the document so much that typing the original might just be easier!I do like its picture scanning capabilities though. Overall, I give it a 3. The good and the bad average but I had expected better character recognition.
