"Got it only for the CD-Key"
I bought this with Dark crusade, mainly for the CD-Key. The case is cardboard, CDs come in paper envelopes. Get this with DC and it will be ok though, as DC comes with a plastic dVD case that has room for both its DVD and the original game CDs and this expansion's CDs as well as the manuals.

Also, this expansion kinda screws up the game, making it too simplistic, even though it adds a new race and a unit to each old race. However, that is al lfixed in Dark Crusade.

You should only get this expansion if you already bought the original game and you thus only need the separate expanion packs. Otherwise get the Anthology pack that has them all included.

"The Imperial Guard"
Probably the most appealing feature of this expansion is the fact you get to play as a race originally controlled by the AI and only seen through the campaign of the first DOW. I never really cared much for the Imperium of Man so the Imperial Guard were not too appealing to me. However, the new Eldar units and tech tree's were something that was greatly liked. The Space Marine and Chaos additions were also excellent. I recommend this game to anyone who is a follower of the previous DOW game. You need to have the original DOW disk in order to install this game. The new campaign missions are definitely something worth playing through.

"Weak."
The campaigns are okay (3 1/2 stars), but Skirmish is a joke. Easy mode is way too easy and Standard is almost impossible. There is not enough balance to the different races. I challenge anyone to try and beat the Skirmish mode with the Imperial Guard and the AI as the Orks at Standard difficulty. You will NEVER win. The new units are great if you can ever get to them. It takes for freakin ever to get your vehicles and by that time the AI has double what you have. You will spend the entire game on the defensive building endless amounts of ineffective turrets while facing waves and waves of his scouts that are just a tough as your expensive regulars. The IG is supposed to have numbers as one of it's "strengths", but you still start out with only 4 and have to spend a fortune to build them up in strength. It's the same with the Chaos Marines, and Eldar. The Space Marines is the only race you can pick in Skirmish mode and have a reasonable chance of victory. Disappointing.

"Fun, Though not as fun as the original"
This Expansion pack for Warhammer40K:DoW gave a somewhat unecessary complexity on a well-balanced, simple, fun game. although it is admirable that they manage to squeeze in another race without turning the game to total mischief, still this expansion fell short of what was expected.

the Original DoW is a fast-paced, simple yet have broad possibility of unit combinations due to the uniqueness of individual units. In the traditions of Blizzard's RTS, DoW is a much needed oasis, on a desert of AoE Clones filled with too complex a game that demands you to bring human race from paleolithic to post-cyberpunk.

anyway, if you feel strongly about the Imperial Guards, then get it, but if not, its better to wait around for the next Expansion : The Dark Crusade

"Its still fun"
I liked this expansion to the original DOW. It was more of the same and since I liked the original game I knew I would like this expansion. I felt it was overpriced for an expansion pack that was on the short side for the single player campaign. Some of the criticism I see here on the Amazon page is justified. I felt the story was well thought out and the voices were beliveable. The graphics and sound were the same as DOW. I saw where some one said the Imperial Guard should have AT weapons, they do its the rocket launchers. It is true the scenarios feel a bit rushed, as if you do not have enough time to really think about your strategy. The problems is I think that is a fair criticism of all RTS games. Once again when installing the game the software secretly tells my firewall to let the game phone home, a very annoying feature.

What our customer's say!

"Great Game, Mediocre Expansion", Dawn of War is a great game, but this expansion was so-so. Campaign was pretty good, but the Imperial Guard (the additional race in this expansion) is a lame race in my honest opinion. I would definitely recommend the original game if you don't already have it, or the new expansion (Dark Crusade), but I'd only get this after you've already played through those two and want more.

"great expansion.", I'm a great fan of Warhammer 40.000 table top game, and I have almost all the pc games of 40k.

I love Dawn of War, and I expect this expansion like a child wait for santa, but I was a little bit disappointed for the short of this. I miss the space marines and I don't like that the chaos only has predator destructor and only heavy bolters for the chaos marines, I don't know if put this review after play dark crusade affect my judgment but definitely I don't like a lot this expansion so much.

Was very funny, and I like all the units, I have a heart attack when I see the necrons in the last mission, but I hate the dual race play.

I really like 4 campaigns (or five, I miss the marines), not two shared campaigns. Was funny but I still don't like it.

"Content.......for now.", The warhammer series is great. No hidden server fees. Charge as much as you want for the game. Just don't make it hurt forever.

"Great Game", DoW is an awesome RTS series. It eliminates the "zerg" rush tatic that many RTS games utilize. You have a very small unit limit of 20pts. Each race is very unique. Really fun game. I would recommend getting the edition with the origial DoW and this expansion. Then also pick up DOW: Dark Crusade. Dark Crusade is a stand alone expansion but you use your CD-Keys for DOW and WA to unlock the original races including their campaigns.

"warhammer 40,000 dawn fo war winter assault", Bought this game for my grandson.
He loves the game plays on line with his friend and they battle.

"A distinct disappointment", Pros:
1) a new army - IG
2) a bit more streamlined upgrade tree
3) two new campaigns

Cons:
1) only one new army yet full price?? Ridiculous!
2) game balance is really messed up now
3) difficulty levels in skirmish have an enormous gap between easy and standard
4) somehow your ally AI is dumb as a rock (wasting resources on buildings when having no units to defend himself; not backing you up; stealing your resources) while the opposing AIs are smart cookies (always gang up to rush one of you).
5) All IG is just Cadians?? Their colors look like crap.
6) IG has no anti-tank until you get sentinels. Meanwhile you are SOL.
7) Annoying guardsmen voices. They are not all juveniles, you know.
8) Marines can build just ONE landraider??
9) Stationary defences seem significantly reduced in effectiveness. Without meaningful fortifications, the game becomes a grunt rush festival and armies like IG won't survive in a skirmish.
10) The Marines get a hero unit that cannot join other units??
11) Only six missions for each of two sides?
12) No meaningful learning curve on the new missions at all. Just a jumble of units and mission objectives that often are completely cryptic as to ways of implementation. I often found myself wondering "What the hell does this mean and how the hell am I to implement it in terms of the game?"
13) Automatic routing is horrendous. Units just sit there wondering how to get where you told them to go. Why the hell is this so difficult to do right?
14) On some of the new maps, you can actually box yourself in by your own buildings!! Once you do, there is no visible way to demolish your own structures to get out.

A big disappointment. After finishing the new campaigns, I find myself playing the original far more often than the expansion. Relic should be ashamed. Instead of becoming the new Blizzard, they have decided to cash out by offering inferior products at the lure of an excellent first work. The same thing happened with 14 East. Guess what, I have not bought a single 14 East product after they went down that road.

"awful campaign mode", Why does relic spend so much effort and money developing such a sophisticated and exciting RTS platform and then give it a campaign mode that is just a confusing goatf$#k of massed enemies and nonsensical storylines? The game was designed to reward subtly matching unit types to enemy strategies, but the campaign mode is just a wave after wave of mixed units that must be endured with no time or even need to plan a defense. I feel like I've been given a set of surgical tools and then told I have 10 minutes to cut dow a tree with them; the sophistication of the tools makes the brutish nature of the task all the more frustrating. Bad, bad job relic.

"Dawn of War = Awesome", This viedo game series is awesome, however, it is always interesting and challanging. The On-line mode pits you against other players accross teh globe. What a crazy ride. This is the best strategy game i have ever played and will continue to play for a long time. Once the latest edition comes out with Necron and Tau, I will finally be able to play my favorite race, the necrons. Anyway, highlighy recommend this game if you liked the following:

Warcraft 1/2/3
Starcraft
Command And Conquer
Age of Empires
Lord of the rings: Battle for middle earth
Star wars galactic empire

"Too ambitious, fails to deliver", I am a huge fan of the originial Dawn of War, and have played the table-top Warhammer 40K miniatures game for a while now. What I loved about the original game, was the sheer fun of playing. Unlike most recent RTS games that tend towards the zoomed-out, over-economized style of Age of Empires, Warhammer delivered something closer to StarCraft, where squads move quickly enough to respond to things and do actual lightning attacks in and out, rather than spend most of their time slowly trecking over tiny terrain features to get to an enemy city, then die from attrition before getting there.
I'll admit, I never played the original multiplayer, but the single-player campaign and a skirmish every now and then were wonderful.
When I first heard about the expansion, I was very excited, hoping for more of the same Warhammer fun that the first game delivered. Expecially a new race, I am not a big fan of Imperial Guard, but hey, a new race to stop if they're that bad, right? So I got a copy, and was even more excited at first by the new style of the single-player campaign, and then almost fell asleep.
While it is an ok story, it doesn't compare at all with the original. Bad premise, ok levels and missions, some good characters, where the original had all of these traits above average. The new units don't add very much, and as much as I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the imperial guard, they weren't worth it. The new and prettier levels are new and prettier, but there are clipping issues where units, masses of orc units in particular, either can't find their way up hills or around obstacles, or multiple squads get all mixed together until none of them can move. At all. With imperial guard you have to start executing units with the comissar to get the force moving again, with the others just have attack forces wail away on themselves. Not sure if that's the map, or some tweak in AI, or what, but I never had that problem in the original. The story, like I said, is weak, as is the character and script writing (in some cases). Some of the new ways of giving open-ended options in single-player were cool, like switching between the two armies of good or evil in the middle of a mission to decide which you would bring on to the next mission.
I'll come to a close soon here, my biggest problems were things like emphasizing the femininity of the Eldar in the plot, making it seem like more than half of the Eldar soldiers were women (not so) and completely unnescessary changes, such as some unit art and upgrade options were altered for all of the old races just for the hell of it, or to make it more "authentically Warhammer" while less balanced. Such as the "chaos projectiles" upgrade for Chaos marines. Also, the new Fire Dragon eldar units have god-awful AI, and never seem to work quite right in combat.
My overall opinion was that there weren't too many glaring flaws, but some little thing was wrong with every single part of the game after the expansion.
This is a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and if you liked the original single-player campaign, stick with the original.

"Good game", Great game, very well done. The only downside is the online playing community. Veterans stack games and encourage noobs to join, enhancing their win %.
