"Great Value" Very pleased...If you are looking for an alternative to Microsoft Office you have found it.
"Better than Microsoft." Better than Microsoft to use and understand. Got one for my wife to. Took office Microsoft Office.
"Finally, A Viable Alternative To MS Office." I've used both Microsoft Office and StarOffice for a number of years, with the handling of Microsoft Office files critical to me. The current version of StarOffice, version 8, has finally evolved from earlier revisions into a program that can easily replace Microsoft Office. There are still some differences (a web page on the OpenOffice web site lists these in detail). And there are also some remaining minor issues, most quickly and easily resolved.
Regardless, StarOffice is a robust, reliable, and featured ladened set of applications (word Processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and draw). Most of these (excluding draw and database) can open/save Microsoft Office files effortlessly. If one doesn't have MS Office installed, one can even setup StarOffice to automatically handle MS Office files (when double-clicked in a folder, for example). As such, Microsoft Office did not get installed when I recently upgraded to a new computer. I'm now using StarOffice exclusively.
NOTES TO OTHER REVIEWERS: To Eli (reviewer elsewhere here), complaining about ###### in Excel cells, your data was not lost. These symbols ("##") appear whenever text or numbers flow beyond the width of a column (because of differences between the default fonts used by the two programs, for example). To resolve the issue, change the font to a smaller one (select all & change), lower the font size (also select all & change), or increase the column width. Your data would have appeared intact.
To Julio, complaining about poor service, there is a massive amount of support data (FAQ's, tutorials, demos, videos, and so on) on the StarOffice and OpenOffice web sites. You questions would have to be truly exotic not to be covered at least somewhere in all that. However, if that were the case, join the OpenOffice forum and ask there. Many answering questions in that forum are directly involved in the OpenOffice/StarOffice project.
"Best Supported MS Office Alternative!" I have found that Sun's StarOffice is the best professionally supported replacement to Microsoft Office (those who don't mind going with community support can try the equally excellent open source derivative OpenOffice.org). I was also grateful enough for the fact that Sun gave me a free license to the software for being a college student (student discounts can't get any better haha).
Sun StarOffice includes the following main applications:
Writer- As the name implies, this is the StarOffice equivalent to Microsoft Word. In my experience, it has been compatible with most Word documents, both in opening them and saving into the format. I had no problems reading and creating documents for my online science course last semester and didn't find myself missing any of Microsoft's Word's features (admittedly, Microsoft Word has more extensive clip-art images than StarOffice, but then again, Google images quickly solves that problem if you should need your fix of cheesy clipart images).
Impress- This is the slideshow/presentation software equivalent of MS Powerpoint. Again, I had no significant issues I can recall when creating and reading documents in both the open format and the proprietary Microsoft one when exchanging documents with classmates and my professor through my e-learning class.
Calc - This is the spreadsheet software included with the package, obviously the equivalent of MS Excel. I don't really use the features of this application as extensively as the former two and usually find my needs met by a smaller/lighter spreadsheet application like Gnumeric. Still, it's there for you. And yet again, compatibility.
Base- This program is supposed to be the equivalent to MS Access. I don't use this program at all, though in terms of compatibility I think it works with most common database formats but requires Microsoft's ADO interface (?) in order to read MS Access files.
Then of course there's Draw, used for (guess?) vector drawing and whatnot as well as the Writer/Web html editor implemented in Writer.
For its price (both the one listed here on Amazon and the price I got it for) you can't go wrong. It has the most features regular users (people at home, students, some small businesses) will ever need and use and is often not just an equivalent, but better replacement for Microsoft Office in terms of price and functionality.
"THE HORROR" NO SERVICE. CALLED SEVERAL TIMES FOR HELP WITH NO ADECQUATE RESPONSE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS FOR A NEW USER. I DECIDED TO DELETE DE PROGRAM INSTEAD.

What our customer's say!
"The choice isn't all that complicated", I have been using StarOffice in a school environment for many years. I am the only island of StarOffice in a sea of Microsoft. After getting used to Star Office, I have been unbelievably pleased to have made this choice. But even with my evangelical attitude, I've had others turn their nose up at the prospect. The following paragraphs are my observations and thoughts about this issue as you consider making the switch.
First thing to ask yourself is whether or not StarOffice is right for you. StarOffice is free for schools (where I work) but as you can see here on Amazon, there is a price for others use the software. My most hearty recommendation to anyone willing to consider making this transition to an alternative productivity suite would be to opt for OpenOffice rather than StarOffice or MS Office. Why? Because OpenOffice (usually known as OO) is pretty much the equal of StarOffice and it is available at no charge. You simply visit the OO website and download the installer. Mac? Sure. Windows? Of course. Linux? What else? I am not at all clear why would anyone prefer StarOffice when they could use OpenOffice at no charge. I suppose part of the answer is that with StarOffice you can get a technical support person on the phone. For me, that isn't worth much. But maybe for others this is significant.
The second question to ask your self is how tolerant are you of inconveniences? By that I mean that StarOffice and OO, while pretty well the equal of the fine MS product, don't look and feel the quite the same as MS Office. That isn't to say they're whacky or poorly laid out... they just reflect a different (though still highly professional and logical) design layout. And let's be honest, MS Office is slick, cool, pretty, and well accepted.
The inconvenience crops up as you learn the program. You learn the menus, the helper icons, the general look and feel. But if you remember when you first started using MS Office, you had this learning curve to traverse as well. And, since there weren't any other options, that's what we all did. That (the new look) seems to be the biggest hindrance. I don't mean to sound petty or cynical, but my experience is that most users aren't willing to actually accept even the mild inconveniences of finding things in different menus. That, my friends, is a tragedy. But all too real I'm afraid. You see, they already know the MS product and anything else is treated with at least skepticism if not suspicion. After all, why is this person so adamant about this other software? It seems almost like Amway if you know what I mean. And as soon as they can't do a search and replace, they throw their hands up. Be honest, if this describes you, so be it. Stick with MS, pay the money, and get on with your life. You'll be OK (so will Bill Gates). But you'll be missing out. If you are willing to be flexible, learn that there's more than one way to skin a cat, then I can tell you that your world is going to change. Throw of the shackles that MS has put on you without you even knowing it. Honestly, OO and StarOffice are absolutely able to virtually everything you'll ever want and more. Really.
So where was I? Oh yes, probably lost most readers by now but I'll wrap up here... the third thing to consider is how much is your time worth. If you cannot afford any "down time" as you learn a new way of word processing, then really there's no alternative. MS Office changes from version to version, but it is a gradual change. And something that you have in common with the others in your work area. So you'll have company along the way - just don't lose sight of how much you are paying for that security.
Try OpenOffice for a while. Don't be afraid to use google when you're stuck. There is, now, a published book for OpenOffice and I saw a magazine at the store targetted to OpenOffice users. We'll never take over the world, but we might make a difference. That's all I really want to do. Live a little more frugally so that my time and money can go for the most important things. C'mon. Free yourself and join the club. It is worth it.
"100%", After years of frustration and disapointment with Microsoft Office Software I've changed over to Star Office from Sun Microsystems and I'm very happy. It is easy to use, stable and safe. It works with all files and it's loaded with lots of goodies. Enjoy!
"Installation issues with Linux 64 bit", I had purchased this product with great expectations. Like many other user's I have made attempts to remove myself from the MS$ products. Unfortunately there appears to be an issue with installing this on some Linux 64 bit systems. I am running SUSE version 10.2 and I am unable to successfully install this product. I would have thought with the latest version of SUSE and the latest version of Star Office 8 these types of issues would have been resolved in the beta process. I have found many forums out there where users have bumped into the same thing, however I have not found any solution. At this point in time it appears I have spent the money but will not have a useable product. I will be contacting StarOffice support to see if it can be worked out, if it can be, and they produce a product that can be installed for everyone of all operating systems, I will be more than happy to update my review. For now, depending on what you are running proceed with caution.
"GREAT program = Microsoft Office Replacement", I have used Microsoft Office 2000 for years. Since the latest Open Office or Star Office has become completely dependable I have switched and had NO Problems that were not covered in the Forums or web site. There are video's and everything you need to learn and use this program. It's much more simple to use than Microsoft's program. TO THE BAD REVIEWER: If you had checked out the forums you would have known to check the fonts & border sizes to fix your problem. It's much easier to do that, than to pay Microsoft for support or look through a 500 page manual on MS Office. The learning curve is much shorter & flater for Star Office or Open Office than MS Office. All questions I've asked in the forums were answered within 24 hours.
"This is great!", This is a great program. It has saved time, money, and is so easy to use. You get an entire office suite.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Excellent replacement for microsoft office", i was going to actually purchase microsoft office for my office but reading the spotlight review there made me consider buying star office instead.and boy i'm glad i did, star office has more features, easy to use interface, for a MUCH lower price.dear reader:don't go for microsoft office, instead buy this one,you will not be dissapointed.oh and thank you amazon for letting your customers write reviews on your products,it definitely helped us out a whole lot:)
"StarOffice 8 - no more Microsoft", Sun's open source StarOffice 8 is a fantastic alternative to the MS Office suite of products. Though a bit slower to load initially once you are up and running I find StarOffice every bit as intuitive and easy to use as any other office suite.
The hot-keys available in StarOffice will be instantly recognized by most Mac users as well since most are the same in Apples OS X as used in StarOffice.
Being able to open and save files in numerous open source, MS, or StarOffice formats is a BIG PLUS!
I really enjoy the PDF utility. Now I can run one single application and save/export the file as a PDF with ease.
Two Thumbs up.
If you are looking for MS Office or a much better cost alternative that runs on any PC platform - Buy StarOffice 8.

"Complete and easy-to-use office suite", This program does everything I need from an office suite and much more. I use mostly the word processing and spreadsheet features and they are as easy to use as MS Word and Excel. Earlier StarOffice vesions had some MS Office compatibility problems - mostly with document formating. I have not noticed any problems with compatibility between StarOffice 8 and MS Office, but would be carefull using it if 100% compatibilty was essential to the application. Overall I find StarOffice a far better value than MS Office.
"Star Office", Does all I need to do for home and also for windows files from work with my linux machine. Cost for the whole package less than 1 MS upgrade. No regrets
"StarOffice 8 is great.", For $69.00 I bought the Sun StarOffice8 suite of programs. You get Word Processing, Speadsheets, Presentation, Database, and Drawing and Graphics programs. You also get the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser and Mozilla Thunderbird Email service. They also send you verions of Office8 for Linux, two Sun operating systems, as well as the Window version, and even a small manual. I find the on screen Help Menus to be much more helpful and useful than those in MS. It's also nice not getting charged extra for certain programs as you do with the the MS suite. It's also compatible with MS Word Excel, etc., so you can send and receive documents to people with the MS suite. More people should check it out.
