"Get ready to pay - and pay again - and again."
I bought Quicken 2003 less than 3 years ago, and now it is forcing me to re-buy 2006. The customer support web page says that they are doing it for my own good.

Maybe they should print this policy right on the box with a bright yellow sticker. This way every one will know how much they care about the consumer.

"Retirement of online services for older versions of Quicken

In an ongoing effort to provide reliable high-quality products and services, Intuit periodically retires (also known as "sunsets") older versions of Quicken, thereby discontinuing online services & live technical support for these versions."

"Excellent household finances program"
I have not used all of the features of the program, but I am extremely pleased with the parts of the program I have used. I use the program to keep track of several accounts and find it very easy to use and it does everything that I want to keep track of. I have also subscribed to Quicken Online (that may not be the right title) so that I can both pay bills from Quicken (which is less important now than it was in the past since most bills can be paid automatically from a credit card, which I prefer) and download account information from my bank and from my credit card. I have not used any competing products as I am completely satisfied with this program.

"Forced to buy Quicken 06"
I am not at all happy with the abrupt move by Intuit to sunset older versions of Quicken. I purchased Quicken basic, while muttering under my breath, declining the "deal" on the deluxe version. It works, it does its job. Register fades out reconciled entries, making it difficult to track back payments, and icons seem to be getting smaller and harder to see. Adequate but not outstanding. Setting up a transaction group very frustrating, Help window next to useless. You have to click an options button while creating a scheduled transaction to set up a new group. Frustrating.

"Not as good as it used to be..."
Intuit's philosophy seems to have changed in recent years compared to what it was back in the 90's. Back then Intuit focused on making a great product that was easy to use.

But by slowly changing certain features over the last several years, Intuit is attempting to extract money from banks, credit unions and service companies (and existing customers), and in so doing have made the product less convenient (and more expensive) for the users of their software. This is ironic because Intuit is now becoming *less* intuitive--a move away from customer convenience, usability and service solely in the pursuit of corporate profits.

From (non-profit) Wikipedia's "Comparison of accounting software":

"Worth noting that Quicken no longer supports QIF, but while claiming to be changing to OIF (a non proprietary standard for financial software) they have introduced their own proprietary QIF format. This just makes it harder to import your data from your bank, in spite of their claims. Avoid Quicken versions after 2004 if this is an issue."

If you are going to buy accounting software, please buy it from Amazon. If you like to research before they buy, non-profit Wikipedia makes a comparison of over 50 accounting software products (...)

"easy to upgrade"
This new version is simple to transfer all your data and simple to use. Since it allows you to download more on-line bank transactions, there's less typing.

What our customer's say!

"Decline of Quicken", Ditto to this review:

"I have been a Quicken user since it was a DOS application back in the mid `80s. It has always been a very good and reliable product. However: Quicken 2006 is by far the worst release of Quicken Intuit has ever produced. "

Today it cannot even print a simple report, while all other software on my system is functioning with out problems.

This just proves software should not be purchased on past history alone...

"Do not buy if you want to write checks with it", I have used quicken for years. I bought a new computer and got an upgrade(at least I thought so) with it. It is not user friendly. I tried to use the check writing part. You have to order checks through Intuit with your name address and bank numbers on them. The only thing you can do is put the amount who it is to and a check number on it. What is the use if you cannot print the whole check with a blank form. What a waste this is! I am throwing mine away and getting something else. I would not recomend this to my worst enemy!

"You will hate yourself if you buy this", The only thing I can think about Intuit and their release of Quicken 2006 is that they hate their customers and care only about greed and themselves. After years of using quicken, I have to throw quicken out because only a handful of banks use their new OFX format (for which banks must pay $1000's in fees) and you cannot use QIF for any savings or checking account, meaning that they disabled this feature forcing millions of customers to either manually enter transactions for their banks or just throwing out Quicken 2006 which is what I am doing. This program demonstates everything that is wrong with a company that dominates a software sector. I hope they go bankrupt very soon. I will never buy from them again.

"A complete waste of money.", I have used earlier versions of Quicken and found them very useful. I recently bought a new computer with Windows XP and found the existing package did not work well with it so purchased Quicken Basic 2006, hoping it would be as useful. It has been a disaster. First it locked me out of my existing files, which had not been password protected, by demanding a password, which I did not have, before I could gain access. The Company's help screen offered a password unlocking service (for a fee) but would not let me use this service because I had a U.K. address and it would only accept addresses in the U.S.A. An e-mail asking for help and advice received no reply. A long expensive phone call to the Company's customer services department yielded, after half an hour, a promise to deal with the matter within 48 hours, but no action whatsoever.
In desperation I tried to start a new date file but was not able to register the product as, again, I did not have a U.s. address. There is no warning on the product that it cannot be used outside the U.S. I have now uninstalled the product and am looking for an alternative.

"Quicken Basic 2006", The product is ok. It is very similar to MS Money. It does not have a clean, or appealing interface like Money does. When I connected to my bank to update my accounts it required me to change my password. Then didn't allow me in my account with the new password. I then could not even access my account through a web browser. I found several other reviewers that had the same or similar issues. If you want to be able to update your accounts via web, I would buy MS Money 2006. I purchased Money 2006 and haven't had a single issue.

"Check with your bank(s) before purchasing", My bank allows for financial information to be downloaded in QIF format, so I thought I wouldn't have any problems. Big mistake- in an insidious attempt to wrangle money out of financial institutions, Quicken 2006 purposely disables the ability to import QIF files for nearly all types of accounts. Those institutions that don't pay up (typically smaller banks and credit unions) can't produce files in the new format (QFX), making the software virtually worthless for their customers. So, unless you enjoy entering dozens of transactions by hand or are from a select list of Quicken partner banks, don't waste your money.

UPDATE: I sent the software back to Intuit under their "60 Day Money Back Guarantee" policy and received a check in the mail a few weeks later refunding the full amount I paid. So, on the bright side, if you find that the software doesn't work for you, you can get your money back without much hassle.

"Does NOT support QIF-Beware", I upgraded from 2003 to 2006 only to find out I could no longer download QIF files. This would mean that I would need to manually enter all of my transactions. YEAH RIGHT! If your bank supports OFX downloads or is a Quicken partner, this product will work fine for you. But if like me you belong to an institution not partnering with Quicken (the Quicken Bank Partner list is really small!) DON'T BUY THIS! I have always liked Quicken but will now have to learn and use MONEY. Oh well, all good things come to an end eventually.

"Very Good Basic Program", I only use it for my checkbook procedures, so I do not know about all of its features; hence the four stars. Installaton was smooth as the program easily incorpoprated my existing data from an earlier verson of Quicken. I liked the ease in backing up my data on a cd rather than a floppy.

"Extremely disappointed", I am extremely disappointed with Quicken Basic 2006 because it does not support true OFX imports unless the bank is a Quicken participating bank. My bank offers OFX downloads of my financial information but has no plans to partner with Quicken. Intuit's only suggestion of recourse to me it to "wait" until they do! Customer convenience is obviously not high on their agenda.

"Very user friendly", I just needed a home accounting program for my personal checking account. Quicken Basic 2006 had more features than I would have expected for the basic edition. It is very user friendly and integrated easily with my online banking information.

I still have to learn all the ins and outs of the software, like how to avoid double entries and how to do scheduled transactions with differing amounts.

It was more than worth the cost and has been of immeasurable help.
