Others say...
"Don't Bother with these over priced PS3's" I was amazed at the stupidity of those advertising these 60 Gb PS3's at outrageous prices when you can buy a new 80 Gb PS3 for $399.99. If 80 Gb isn't enough for you, you acn change out the hardrive with a lap top hard drive running at 5400 RPM. I don't know if a 7200 RPM will work. Those considering a purchase from one these should reconsider. If it is the backwards compatibility with the PS2 that is driving you, Just buy the 80 Gb & a PS2, total of $430. That is cheaper than the "Used" over priced PS3's listed here. Charlie S.
"The Ultimate PS3" This is coming from a guy who has all three, but this review will ONLY mention the PS3. What you have in the current PS3 market will be the 80gb and 120gb PS3. However none of those pale in comparison to the discontinued 60gb model. As essentially all current PS3 models and the 60gb work in the same manner, the PS3 60gb offers something the newer models don't have.
The System:
The system is a beautiful piece of work (albeit a bit heavy...It's 11 lbs). It has a 9 core cell processor with an NVidia graphics card that is a step up from the 8800 GTX card. The system is sleek and excellently chromed with silver face plating blended with the nice, sexy glossy black finish exterior. Like all current models, it is the ONLY Blu-ray player that is up to standard with profile 2.0 and updates via ethernet or wi-fi built in connections. However this system (along with the 20gb PS3) is the only worthwhile model that is pure backwards compatible with you PS2 and PS1 games. It's HDD is designed to create the respective memory cards so you won't even have to use your memory cards anymore. The main display is the beautifully psp inspired XMB which is now the standard for Sony's future console/handheld endeavors.
The Games:
Now granted the PS3 had a bad start in games. But since then the system has come a long way to provide us old IPs and new alike. I personally love how MGS4 looks on my 40 inch 1080p HDTV display. Along with purchasing the PS3, the games to get with this system are endless, but here are a few honorable mentions:
Resistance: FoM Ratchet and Clank Call of Duty 4 Uncharted Warkhawk Metal Gear Solid 4 GTA IV Assassin's Creed
More are coming out by the month and 2008 has a lot of anticipated third party titles too. Sadly I didn't put Heavenly Sword up there, because it was too short a game, and I think God of War III can beat that game easily in size and entertainment. GTA IV, even though an honorable mention, just didn't quite stick on me. But that is not to say it should not be enjoyable for you. So all in all not only do you have the best Blu-Ray player, you got some games to keep you entertained. My ONLY gripe with the games (and this has nothing to do with the games content) is that their resolution is mostly registered at 720p...If the PS3 has the ability to output 1080p, then the companies should try to make their games output 1080p.
Online:
Now granted, the online when it first came out, was sub par at best because not a lot of people owned the system. Also when playing online if someone sent you a message, you had to quit the game JUST TO REPLY. Also the PS3 was touted as a media hub. Which was great and all, but what was the point if you couldn't hear your music as you played online?
Now 14 million and counting players access the PSN, and thankfully the earlier problems had been resolved with the latest patches. Sony has also prompted a trophies feature so that first and third party developers can implement achievements as you progress in the game. Now because this is still new, not many games have the in game music and trophy system implemented, but ALL PS3 games now have the in game XMB implemented so we can finally answer our messages without having to quit our game and then some. However if you are watching a DVD/Blu-Ray, wanting to access the PS store, or playing a PS1/PS2 game, you still have to quit.
Also as an added bonus, Home is just around the corner, so if myspace is not your thing but you still want to be social with your PS3, be ready to enjoy a wonderful virtual world that awaits you. This "social game" is the most highly social interactive experience no other console has released yet.
Media: This PS3 comes with an upgradable 60 HDD. There are many options to upgrade your space should you want more, and it shouldn't cost you more than 100 dollars. Just ask any PS3 gamer that knows his stuff. Blu-Ray, in my humble opinion, I wasn't interested at first. I didn't see the point in it.
That all changed when my HDTV came in. The PS3 can upscale your DVDs far better than most up-conversion players, but when I put the blu-ray version of The Warriors in, MAN was I blown away. The audio and video were so good, words can't express it. Slowly but surely more Blu-Ray titles are coming out and even some Anime (for Otakus everywhere) movies are out on Blu-Ray (Robotech Shadow Chronicles on Blu-Ray is amazing!). Aside from that, the 60gb PS3 has a memory card reader that Supports SD, Compact Flash, and Memory Stick Pro/Duo cards to import any media you have in them into your PS3's HDD.
You have the PS Store to download the latest Add-ons, Movies, Demos, and full retail games. My only gripe is the lack of Blu-Ray trailer content they currently have up there. The PS3 has an internet browser and is fun to access certain web pages. I must warn you though it has a limited flash cache so any webpage thriving heavily with content and flash will not be able to be displayed (only a blank white page will occur).
Overall:
If you are in the market for a blu-ray player that also can play games, a hardcore sony fan that wants more OMPH in his dollar without compromise, or a media lover that wants the up to date tech, this system is just perfect for you.
"This PS3 is the best -Now yu have to pay a Premium" But worth the additional if you didn't get in on this version befor eit was canceled. This plays all the PS games, and has nice extras.
"Best of the three" I own this PS3, an Xbox360 elite and a Nintendo Wii and the PS3 is easily my favorite. Here is why:
- LOTS of exclusives like MGS4, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, etc. - Tried & true dualshock controller, very comfortable and intuitive - 720p games and 1080p bluray movies (360 games transmit 1080p but it's just upscaled from lower resolutions, for example Halo 3 is programmed at 720p blown up to 1080p) - Games are on bluray disks, which means no switching disks because blurays hold more content - There is a steady stream of good games being released - More hardware potential (8 cores) which hopefully we will see taken advantage of in the future - Online games are a lot less chatty (fewer annoying little kids) - Oh yeah and this little thing called God of War 3 =)
This model also had full backwards compatibility, unlike the other models. If you still don't have a PS3 and you enjoy console games, get this 60 gig model now.
"It has it all..." Although I'm STILL waiting for Final Fantasy XIII, this system is awesom. Yes, a little expensive, but worth every penny. Not only are the games good, but the internet browser is a great feature and it's faster than my home computer. Also, the ability to download shows, movies, and games is a great touch. I download Family Guy episodes as well as sci-fi stuff like Firefly. I could spend hours on this thing and not even notice time flying by. I would like to see more role-playing games but I'm sure with time, the library will expand...just like the PS2. The other big plus? This 60gb version plays all every PS2 game I've tried on it, so I'm not missing out on the big PS2 library of games. If you can dish out the dough, I'd recommend this system.

What our customer's say!
"Great with two caveats", Got this for my brother last Christmas.
Good: Cheapest and best Blu-Ray player
Great performance
Free online service
Bad: Online network is still a joke
Games genres not our preference (prefer xbox360)
Remote will prevent you from a universal remote
Overheats
Player failed after less than a year
Summation: Get if you are looking for a Blu-Ray player. Casual gamers should get a Wii. Hard-core gamers should get an xbox 360 since most of the best gamers on on xbox live.
Throw out the reliability issue since I've had two PS3s (a 60gb and a 40gb) from Amazon fail in less than a year. My xbox 360 from Amazon is fine (yes same amount usage for all 3).
"Not really 5-stars but I love it", My friend got a 60 gig on release date and had it up until 2 weeks ago when he found out that his broken PS3 was .03% or something of all PS3s that break due to the yellow light thing. He had to buy the MGS4 pack and drive 45minutes to a college to find one and had to pay $545 since it was one of the better PS3 versions. 60 gigs are supposed to be very dependable. I guess my friend got the short side of the stick. I LOVE U PS3 ILL HAVE YOU SOON! RESISTANCE 2 ROCKS!
"PS3/XBOX360 Objective Comparison", Reliability: I own a video game store. One of the services that we provide is various repairs on most game consoles. In the last year, I have performed around 60 individual XBOX 360 repairs compared to 0 (zero) PS3 repairs. PS3 Wins Hands Down
Compatability: The 60GB version of the PS3 is FULLY backwards compatible with PS2 and most PS 1 games. The new 80GB version has some limited backwards compatability. The 40GB version has no backwards compatability. All versions of the 360 (Arcade, Pro and Elite) have the same limited backwards compatability. At least PS3 has a version that is fully backwards compatable. PS3 WINS
Value: The new 80GB version of the PS3 retails for $399.00. This includes an 80GB hard drive (obviously), built in Bluetooth, and built in WIFI. Oh and lets not forget that the DVD player in the PS3 will play all of your regular AND Blu-Ray DVDs. The lowest cost 360 is the Arcade version that retails for around $199. This version does not come with a hard drive which will cost you around $100 for 60GB, nor does it have built in WIFI. The WIFI adapter retails for around $100 also. So for $399 you essentially get 20GB less storage...oh and NO BLU RAY!!! PS3 WINS
Game Selection: Let's say that most games nowadays are released on both PS3 and 360, but there are some titles that are exclusive to each. Some of the hotest exclusive titles are:
PS3 - Metal Gear Solid, SOCOM, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2 360 - Fable II, Gears of War 2 and of course Halo 3
Overall, since the 360 has been around for a few more years, there are more titles available, but some of the most popular like BioShock have been ported over now to the PS3...most of the others will follow suit (except Halo which will probably always be a 360 only title). 360 WINS (but not for very much longer)
So of the 3 main decision points as to which console to purchase. PS3 scored 3 out of 4 to the 360's score of 1 out of 4.
Let me also say that I make more money selling the 360 because of all of the periphery that you have to buy along with it (more margin in accessories) so I hope people continue to go in that direction. However, when viewed objectively, the PS3 is clearly the way to go.
"Best media center ever!!", I would consider myself a pretty involved techno guy (not the music). I own 2 HD DVD players and this version of the PS3. I love this system for many reasons:
1. It's the best blu-ray player on the market 2. It has a great selection of games 3. No need to buy batteries (rechargeable or otherwise) 4. Is FULLY backwards compatible with all old PS and PS2 games 5. Has a nice, functional internet browser 6. FREE online gaming 7. 4 USB ports 8. Media card expansion slots 9. You can easily upgrade the HDD 10. It constantly upgrades itself (firmware updates) 11. Built-in WiFi 12. Stores music, movies, and photos.
I'm sure there are other things I can add but I'll just stop there. I wouldn't necessarily suggest that someone pay the extra money to pay of this specific version but I would say that it certainly is superior to the others. I kind of took a gamble about a year ago when I bought this system after researching the others (Xbox 360, Wii) and I have to say that my selection is certainly paying dividends. I used to be complete anti-playstation or Sony for that matter (with no really good reason) but no I can proudly say that I'm a believer!!
"Excellent system, built to stand the test of time. ", I got my PS3 about 6 months after launch and I have loved every minute of it. I got the 60 gig model for $499 and don't regret paying that much for it; it is well worth the price.
Unfortunately, I would say I am in a good position to review this system because of the wait I endured for it. I have a feeling that if I bought the system at launch, I might not have been so excited about its features (or lack thereof). Yep, that's right. The system had very few exciting features at launch, resulting in many people complaining about the price. "I DON'T NEED TEH BLOO-REHH!!", the crowds chant. But as many have come to see, Blu-Ray has benefited and will continue to benefit Sony for years to come.
The system itself is a very classy design and looks great with any pre-existing setup. Okay, maybe not so much in a "Mission Style" room, but you get the point. Setup is obviously painless, with two cables from the back. The only slightly annoying part for me was the immediate firmware update right when you turn it on. This can easily be remedied with a sandwich.
The controller is just about the same as its always been, with the lack of vibration, of course, thus resulting in a lighter controller. I had no problem with this, but I know a lot of people that thought it was a horrible move by Sony. "Motion control is a gimmick!" While I agree on that front, I was not bothered by the removal of the vibration. The fact that you can charge the controller without the need for special battery packs or cables is great. If I used the Wii as much as I do the PS3 (before they released rechargeable battery packs, of course) I would estimate I would have spent about 300 bucks in batteries alone!
Back to firmware updates, one of the most important features of the PS3. Like I said before, the PS3 would be considered gimped, looking back to how it was at launch and looking now to what we have. With firmware updates, functionality has been improved greatly. Several new audio codecs support have been added, you can stream media from a computer on your network, with remote play you can view/listen to that same media anywhere in the world, you can now access your menu in-game and send messages in-game; the list could go on!
The games; why we buy a system. To say the PS3 was lacking in the games department at launch would be an understatement. With the exception of Resistance: Fall of Man, the PS3 was severely lacking! This has now been remedied with the likes of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and several other Multi-Platform titles. And with upcoming games such as SOCOM: Confrontation, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, and Killzone 2, the PS3 lineup is looking VERY strong.
And that's about it. I love the PS3. I would recommend it to any video game enthusiast. It is a well built system with years of fun to come.

"This is the one!", When we decided to upgrade our PS2 we asked the "experts" at local game stores about our upgrade choices. We were told that the PS3 40G was good but would not play PS2 games. The PS3 80G would play some of the PS2 games but not all. Then we were told about the PS3 60G which is no longer available... discontinued apparently because it WILL play both PS2 and PS3 games. Being a faithful Amazon customer I wasn't going to believe the availability till I checked Amazon. Amazon can always be counted on to have the hard to find items I am looking for. Sure enough, Amazon offered the PS3 60G through its "Sellers" market. It is expensive, more expensive than the 40 or 80G. But with all the PS2 games that we have it would be majorly stupid to buy something that wouldn't play our games AND give us access to all the PS3 games. It was a no brainer for us. Sure it cost more but after adding up the cost of all the PS2 games that would have to be sold or given away it was well worth the price. The PS3 60G is the way to go. My children LOVE it!!!!!!! If you want to keep your PS2 games and play PS3 games buy a PS3 60G. The price will be high but they are the only PS3 that will play ALL of the PS2 games straight out of the box. I am glad that when we needed one, we were lucky enough to find honest "experts" who even mentioned the PS3 60G, even though it is discontinued. My advice is that if you want or need a PS3 the 60G is the most versatile. Get it while it is available. I am also grateful that Amazon can always be counted on to have what I need. Thank you Amazon!
"ThE best version of the PS3 to ever hit the markert", I personally believe that for those of us who managed to score the 60 gig PS3, we are very lucky to have an incredible piece of hardware. I got this version within its opening year and this system has never failed me since. Its been running like a champion and is totally compatible with all my PS2 games that i own, WIFI connectivity is there, wired connectivity is there....but the only thing missing are the DualShock 3 controllers. Considered that you can get one with the new 80gig but i highly suggest to people to spend their money on the 60 gig, get urself a dualshock 3 controller and ur way better off this way.
Try finding this version for cheaper and u end up with a great addition to your entertainment system. Im just hoping these guys arent trying to create a PS4 yet because the current gen systems still have alot more power that can be squeezed out of them......
1 suggestion...microsoft should switch to a blu-ray player on their XBOX 360's. I think its about time all the mediums switched over to it so 360 users can start enjoying games of high def quality also........DONT MURDER ME FOR THIS JUST SPREADING FAIRNESS.
"Its great", Well I love my Playstation 3 but the only problem is the games for it because they come out months after they are released on another console but what makes up for they delay in the games release is the games quality of the high definition because the PS3 is really just a console with they power of a high quality computer. What will help the PS3 would be the games that are planned for it because some are titles only for the PS3 such as haze and Metal Gear Solid 4 which are both great games that are only for the PS3.
"Ready for Prime Time", I've had my PS3 for a year now, and I have to say that while the price is still pretty high, this console finally seems to be coming into its own. Initial PS3 games that I'd played weren't particularly stunning, but now the titles are starting to justify the hardware. If I had to compare the PS3 to the XBox 360, I'd say the beauty of it is that it doesn't brick itself with a Red Ring of Death. If I had to compare it to the Wii, I'd point out that it's far more of a media entertainment device. And that above all, Sony's strict adherence to backwards compatibility has given it a strong advantage: I can play Playstation 1 and 2 titles with ease and have yet to have one fail to work. This means you still have access to a massive library of titles, and I find myself playing PS2 and PS1 games as much as the few I have for the PS3. The only bad things I've encountered so far are that the Sixaxis controller's "tilt" functionality (slightly similar to the Wii's ability to physically move the controller in the air to play a game) is very shaky: it's difficult to control. Also, the fans on the PS3 are extremely loud, and run constantly: even playing a movie will create the roar of the unit trying to keep itself cool. I keep my PS3 away from dust and clean it regularly, but it still seems to need to run loud.
"The cost of disappointment is $500", Let me start off by saying that the PlayStation 2 was my console of choice during the last iteration of gaming consoles. That said, what follows is my review of the so far unimpressive PlayStation 3.
As of the time of this writing, I have had the console for about a year and I regularly play approximately zero PS3 games. When the console first came out, I purchased Rainbow Six: Vegas and The Darkness, but quickly grew disinterested in both (Vegas primarily for its extreme difficulty level and The Darkness purely because I didn't like it). I soon afterwards picked up The Simpsons Game but casually played that on and off for a while before my interest was drawn away by other games. Another near-immediate pickup for me was the "next gen" version of NCAA Football 08, which SEVERELY disappointed me because I saw a game where the graphics were stepped up phenomenally, but all of the little things in the game that I found to be fun, such as the pennants to unlock stadiums and historic teams, were missing. After a mere couple of hours with the PS3 version, I went back to the store to purchase a copy of the PS2 version. My latest item acquired for the PS3 is The Bourne Conspiracy, a prequel to the Bourne novels and movies. This game seems very promising in the early stages, not becuase of it's shiny new graphics, but because for the first time that I can remember seeing, an action game proudly displays and excels at its hand-to-hand combat.
My biggest complaint about the PS3 was the supposed saving-grace for the system: Grand Theft Auto IV. I won't spare you the details here about everything I posted in my review, I'll just say that the game was a waste of time, I gave it a 5.4 out of 10 rating, and I have abandoned the thought of purchasing any GTA games in the future. Rockstar claimed that IV was going to reinvent the franchise in the way that GTA III reinvented it ... not quite. If it wasn't for the upcoming God of War III, "Hitman 5" (the unofficial name of it so far), Resident Evil 5, and Splinter Cell: Conviction, my PS3 would be on sale.
I've also noticed Sony nickel and diming the hell out of their consumers through the use of this system. It confuses me that a company that was so highly praised for the PS2 being 100% backwards compatible with PS One games, controllers, and memory cards would completely take away some of those features. First off, you can transfer your saves, but you need to purchase a special adapter to do so. As far as the controllers go, they're about as useless as that one you dropped while your friends were over and you still had pizza grease on your hands and it never quite worked the same afterwards. They don't even sell an adapter for the controllers. While in *unnamed store* today, I saw that the controllers had jumped five dollars since the launch of the console.
Overall, I have had almost no fun with this system and the $60 price tag on games which have just about all turned out to be busts for me so far isn't going to turn me on to the system anytime soon.
