"Great Netgear support providing new beta firmware"
I brought two of this router. Made them a VPN between the office and home. The one in the office has no problem, runs for couple weeks never need to reboot. The one at home always need reboot, once kids get home and started their X-Box360 online games -- every 20 minutes to two hours.

I contacted Netgear support, reported the problem. They provided me a beta firmware, version 1114, which keeps the router running for a week and have no reboot any more.

Another thing that the user guide did not meantion is that you don't have to run the wizard software from CD, just use browser points to
[...]
you will be able to configure this VPN router.

Don't return the routers back to Amazon, Netgear support can help you get the problems gone! I am very happy with them once the new firmware updated!

"OK"
Generally OK, but lacking some flexibility in configuring firewall exceptions and has some obscure bugs in the firmware that Netgear has acknowledged to us but not fixed in 6+ months.

"low rating is deserved"
I own 2 of these, different geographic locations, different isp's, different local attached devices. Both seemingly randomly hang and require a power off/on to return to normal operation. This issue is widely recognized as evidenced here. I believe the reason there are some higher rated reviews is that they occurred during the first release of the firmware. The subsequent 2 releases have both manifested the "freeze" problem. I can not see any indication that Netgear is addressing the problem. I am currently seeking alternative solutions

"revised review"
This is the second FVS114 that I've purchased; the first one has been running solid for at least a year. I purchased a second one to create a 'safe' zone for my wireless networks (on the inside of one firewall and outside of the other). I now have a 'protected' zone inside the second FVS114 firewall. The WAN exposed FVS114 is connected to two 4-port switches and a total of 7 devices (not counting the switches).

The FVS114 handles VoIP, Xbox Live, wireless network connectivity and everyday Internet traffic without incident. And since its an SPI firewall, it affords a higher level of protection than NAT devices.

I've only had the second FVS114 for a few weeks, but expect my second FVS114 to provide the same excellent level of uptime service that my first one has for over a year. And since Netgear ProSafe products have a lifetime warranty (for products purchased after May 1, 2007), I have no worries about replacing my FVS114 should it malfunction.

* * * * *

After operating my new FVS114 for about 4 months, I find myself agreeing with many of the negative reviews about this unit having problems. I have two of these firewalls and the first one was manufactured in Taiwan; the newer one was manufactured in China. I think there are quality or perhaps other differences in the two firewalls. The Taiwan manufactured unit is solid; but the one manufactured in China is not.

* * * * * *

I have another observation about the firmware issue; after 'upgrading' my first (Taiwan manufactured) FVS114 to version 1.1-01 as recommended in several reviews, it developed dropout problems. I re-installed the original version 1.0 firmware that provided solid uptime availability for years and the unit went back to being solid.

I also installed the 1.0 version on my second (China manufactured) FVS114 and it has been solid since the downgrade; it had occasional dropouts with version 1.1_01.

The original version is 1.0_07 and is available on the Netgear website.

"Very unreliable"
I have tried everything to keep this router up and running for at least 2 days but have not been able to do so. Firmware updates, reboots, restores, nothing will fix the issue that for no apparent reason the router will just cut out and stop working, requiring a power cycle each time. Its 100 Mb WAN port is the only plus I got out of this router so while it was up I could get the full potential of my internet service but this will soon join my old 10 Mb router at the garbage dump as I need a more reliable router then this thing. Seriously every couple hours or so, mulitiple time A DAY the router would cut out so no internet could be accessed or even the configuration page. A big waste of money.

What our customer's say!

"Buy only if browsing the web...everything else crashes it", The only stable firmware for this product is the 1.01 version. All subsequent firmware releases (1.06, 1.10) are unstable. The nat does not clean up unused tcp connections and will die under heavy loads (heavy being running something such as eMule for more than a day). The router software is extraordinarily inefficient; it cannot juggle streaming media and regular browsing. You must do one or the other, but not both at once. This could probably be an awesome product if there were aftermarket firmware available, but since it is a closed product you must rely on Netgear to fix the bugs, which they seem unwilling to do. Save yourself a headache and create your own firewall with a mini-pc (at least you can change the underlying software!) or get a different product.

"Never had a problem", I have 4 of these, one has been running for several years. No problems at all. These front our Internet connection, and we do not use them as switches, just firewalls. That means we have the Internet connection plugged into one port, and a switch plugged into another port. The computers, printers, etc. are plugged into the the switches, not this unit. The router sits between these units and the Internet. (The reason we use so many of them is that we sublet our office space: each tenant gets their own firewall so that no one can bust into the other tenant's network.)

We've never had any problems with them, and so, at least as firewalls, they do the job. Switches are cheap: just buy a netgear 16 port switch and put it behind these. They worked fine for us, without any firmware upgrades or anything. We just take them out of the box, set them up as DHCP servers and leave the firewall protection at the default and we've never had a single problem with any of the 4 of them we own.

If people are having problems, I suspect the switch capabilities could be the issue.

"Not a good choice", Beware, if you want to use the VPN you also need to buy the Netgear proprietary software. This is bad - they should include it in the price of the router. I did not realize this when I bought the router, but it does say so if you read the fine print and look at the diagram.

However I found the basic DSL PPPoE connection to degrade over a day or so, and require reboot for performance, or it stops, and you are forced to reboot it. So given this, I never spent the extra money to buy their VPN software. I was surprised about this since I used this to replace a Linksys WRT54G which has worked flawlessly for years.

(I bought a Linksys RVS4000 instead, and could not get it's VPN going either. Finally I bought a Draytek router, which are hard to find in the US. This is working really well - but not for the amateur - the setup is very sophisticated and needs great expertise. But once you set it up - it works very well, to my relief.)

"From very bad to great..", I purchased the FVS114 over six months ago. At first, it dropped the internet connection all the time. I had to rebooted it several times a day - sometimes three or four times in a row. I contacted Netgear support and did not get good advice. So in December 2007 I removed it from my network. I figured, oh well, I can make a years worth of lemonade with this thing (it was such a lemon).

Netgear did follow-up with a survey asking how they had done delivering support (that was very nice of them). I did not respond at first, after a few months I decided I would go ahead and fill out the survey. I told them they had a problem they were not addressing very well (IMHO). That got me another response from Netgear, and a quick one at that. They made the new firmware available to me. It was easy to download and install. BAM! The FVS114 rocks now.

I have had no problems at all over the past two months! I am very happy with the FVS114 and would purchase more products from Netgear in the future.

The FVS114 has a lot of good features. Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) routing are the two features that made me select this product over any others. Now that it is working properly, it delivers exactly what they say, "business class protection".

"Netgear Warranty is Meaningless ", I have used Netgear products for many years and they used to work for at least the warranty period. Not so with the current crop of Netgear products. I had been using the FVS114 router for 7 months when it started to frequently drop internet connection. The unit supposedly has a "lifetime" warranty. The problem is so severe that I have had to retire the unit. Contacting Netgear for an RMA or technical support is a fruitless task. Don't waste your money on Netgear - buy something else.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Works OK with the right firmware", Purchased one of these for a client and had the same stability problems mentioned in other reviews here. Upgraded the firmware to the latest version and still had issues. Finally talked to Netgear support and reduced the MTU size. They also mentioned that an older firmware version (v1.1_01) was known to be more stable, even though there were two more recent releases shown on the support page.

The MTU change helped quite a bit, but still had occasional freeze ups. Downgrading the firmware to version 1.1_01 made a huge difference. The router has been very stable since installing this earlier release.

"Buy the FVS318v3 instead, NEVER this product", This would be nearly a perfect product if it didn't require a reboot every few hours. Logging onto the customer-only Netgear discussion forums -- which you can only access _after_ you buy as it needs a serial number -- shows that the FVS114 is known to be very unreliable. Why does Netgear still sell it then!!?

The prevailing wisdom on Netgear's own discussion forums is to buy the FVS318v3 instead. Even if you don't need an 8-port switch (I personally have a separate switch).

I just replaced my FVS114 with the FVS318v3. So far it has been working for a few hours. If this one too had problems it'll be the last Netgear product I buy. After already swearing off Linksys etc, I think it might be time to step up to Juniper or Fortinet.

"Didn't work for me, and I'm no idiot", I have been configuring point to point connections for over 5 years. I have extensive experience with Cisco PIX, Linksys and SonicWALL firewalls. I thought I'd save $50 and buy this endpoint instead of another BEFVP41 (Linksys). It was a poor decision for me.

My big complaint: Unreliable. On several occassions while setting up a tunnel, the unit simply stopped responding and had to be hard rebooted. Once the power was back on, it takes (by comparison to the competition) a REALLY long time to be available again. After successfully setting up three tunnels on it, I went to bed. The next day, NOTHING worked anymore. Not only were the tunnels not functional, but ALL traffic (including outbound http) would not work. Even after resetting the FVS114 back to factory defaults, I could never again get it to route traffic. ** In case you're wondering, it was on a surge / battery backup ups. **

I read many of the reviews here. I am always skeptical when reading a negative review on such a product because let's be honest, there is no shortage of idiots out there. I saw that some people said it worked without a hitch, so I assumed the negatives were writting by inexperienced users. I should have listened.

The bottom line: This product MIGHT work well for you, but I suspect there is a quality control issue, or perhaps more than one manufacturing facility is involved, some good, some not. Whatever the reason is, it doesn't work for me.

Since then I was able to find a BEFVP41 still in stock. I have all the connections configured and working perfectly and RELIABLY.

IF YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT AND ALL PACKAGING MATERIALS. NETGEAR, I'M DONE WITH YOU.

"No support", Had trouble setting up a VPN connection, after buying this product AND the Netgear VPN client software. Called Netgear, and they said it would cost $75 to talk to someone for 1 hour, and they could not guarantee resolution. I guess I'll just return both items as "broken" because Netgear couldn't take 10 minutes to clear up a configuration issue.

And I used to actually like the netgear stuff.

"Unreliable product and unresponsive customer service", After less than one week of use, I am forced to return this product due to its inability to maintain a reliable network connection. In 5 days, I have had to cycle power on this unit, on average, more than once per day after it locks up. The Web UI fails to respond to connection requests, it loses the ability to communicate with the internet and the only solution is to cycle power. I have tried to work with NetGear technical support, but their suggestions (e.g., lower MTU) have been useless and their responses quite tardy. If you are looking for a firewall/VPN unit, I suggest you pass on this particular product.
