Others say...
"It is all in the people." There have been few games that could hold my interest. This is one of those. I have been playing this game for nearly a year and a half. This is why I still play.
People. The people who play this game come from all over and from all walks of life. I have met people from all over the United States, New Zealand, Russia and Canada and a few I thought were from outer space. I have met people in IT, construction workers, military, and a few stay at home parents. The people make it great.
Graphics. The scenery, sound and effects, grouped with realistic avatars have been so detailed as to cause me to stop and stare in wonderment. I Have found myself staring at the elaborate dungeon settings and detailed elevations when I should be paying attention...
Tradition. This game follows closely to the original. It felt comfortable. It was the game that followed the D&D rules and ideals the most, to me. The lack player against player in normal play made it seem more community oriented.
I would recommend this game to anyone who played PnP. For me, it brought back he joy of playing without the pain of scheduling issues, need for hours of planning and deciding who was going to be GM. It is easy to get into, easy to learn the rules and easy to get addicted to.
"the best mmorpg" i have wow guild wars and ddo and ddo is by far the best trust me. Wow its just killing and killing no strategy nothing ddo has it all and is a great mmorpg
"The best MMO ever, warts and all" I started playing D&D in 1982, and played my first MUD in 1991. I've tried Everquest and World of Warcraft, but did not enjoy them.
DDO is very different from other MMOs - instancing and the focus on grouping force you to use real tactics, but the result is a game with no griefing, no player corpse looting, no camping... combat is amazingly fast and melees and casters alike have a bewildering array of options.
I've never given time to a game the way I have with DDO. Countless hundreds of hours later I can't wait to get on and play some more. That's a good sign, right?
"I love it - but there are caveats..." This game puts itself in a risky position. I think a lot of people hate it simply because it doesn't meet their expectations. First of all, the game is not properly an MMORPG. Second of all, there is next to no single-player content here. Which is admittedly a pretty weird combination.
I bought the game well over a year after release, so I'm giving it a pass as far as not being latest-and-greatest in the graphics and technology dept. I don't think that's relevant anyway. I picked up Lord of the Rings Online for the retail price at around the same time, and thought it was lovely to look at, but cancelled my subscription after 2 days of play: WoW-clone, yawner.
And that's the most important caveat - I don't personally like MMO's. They're treadmills. You can't really play them "well" or "poorly" because the difficulty balancing is so pervasive and the penalties for failure are so neglible. They're more like video-toys than video-games.
D&DO is different. It's more like playing the first Neverwinter Nights game in little bite-sized chunks. Compared with any single-player RPG, the quests are simple, of course, but they are *real* quests, with actual dungeon designs, puzzles, traps, and even a voice-over narration reminiscent of a pen-and-paper DM. (There's also an action element to gameplay which you can use to your advantage, or ignore at a slight penalty if that's your preference.) You need certain character types to play certain roles, so you really have to put some thought into engineering your characters and grouping with other characters that complement them.
Which brings me to the only potential problems: 1) The game is hard. HARD. You can not play it alone in any real measure unless you're willing to grind away at a snail's pace. In a party of 2 well-considered characters it's still very difficult just scraping through content that's lower than your intended level. 2) The game is aimed at total D&D dorks, and much of the rule set isn't documented anywhere in the game itself. This is a pet-peeve of mine with CRPGs, and has been since the first Everquest - which assumed you'd pour over websites and forums just to learn how to play the game. A RETAIL GAME SHOULD BE SELF-DOCUMENTING. I know enough about D&D to kind of fake my way through it, but if you're new to this it will be a struggle.
For me personally, this game is a perfect match - it lets me play Neverwinter Nights some more, and it makes my wife happy, since she wanted me to go back to playing WoW with her. Which was just out of the question... This we both like. If you've got a friend/ friends who can consistently join you, this is some of the best online adventuring available IMO. (And I've tried just about all of the properly massively-multiplayer stuff: EQ, EQ2, AC, AC2, DAoC, WoW, LOTR blah blah blah blah blah. Can't tell them apart in retrospect.)
"It has been a long time coming" If you have played D&D for the last 30 years or if you like action and adventure, this is the game for you. Based in Wizards of the Coast world of Eberon you get to create and play the character of your choice. Fun online play. Plenty of quests to complete and many more being added in the future. DDO is an excellent mmorpg.

What our customer's say!
"Unique game & Good Community", This game has been out for a while out but one couldn't tell. The graphics are pretty well done overall. The landscape is gorgeous and mosters are very cool looking. The community is very friendly even is sparse in some servers. It's a shame this game is not more popular which is mostly due I think to a bad start and poorly written reviews.
Dungeons will keep you on your toes when you run them for the first time. Traps come out of nowhere, doors slam shut separating you from your group and leaving you to fight angry creatures alone. Puzzles and hidden doors also populate dungeons all over the world. Knowing your enemies is important; some creatures can only be defeated with certain weapons.
Character creation is pretty customizable. You can build all sorts of interesting characters. Unfortunately most choices are set once picked so there isn't much room for error. But like most other games players have created character builders online where you can test your builds on "paper" before you put time into a character.
The combat is not click and forget like most MMORPGs around. It is something more like a third person adventure game. You can dodge attacks, melee and projectiles, if you are quick enough on the keyboard.
Overall this is a pretty unique and interesting game. It's not perfect by any means, but what game is. I would definitely give it a try. You can find it pretty cheap here on Amazon and the first month is free like all MMOs. [...]
"Pretty Great", Fans of D&D based role-playing games - such as Bioware's Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series - will find a lot to like here. I never played the pen-and-paper game, but I felt instantly at home. The races, classes, skills, and spells are exactly the same, with the difference being that your party members are other players, not the computer A.I. The dungeons and monsters are very well done, the graphics are the best I have seen in an online game. Its quite easy to find people to group with, and the players are, by and large, intelligent, friendly, and mature. I'm not saying its perfect, but this is a pretty great translation of Dungeons and Dragons to an online game. There is an over-arching story, but the emphasis is - as it should be - on small groups of adventurers, exploring fearsome dungeons for treasure and glory. Highly recommended!
"Better after 2 years, and getting better every mod.", Let me start out saying that I bought DDO without any background in DnD at ALL. I've been with DDO since launch, after the second module (Titan) was released, I left due to bugs and just flat out being bored. I went to WoW with a few friends and that didnt last long, but thats neither here nor there. I came back during the last "Welcome Back Weekend." The level cap had increased, and the quality of people had improved as well. Turbine has come a long way since launch, and I absolutely love the game. Granted you need to know a decent amount about DnD to start a viable character, but anyone can do that with just a little research. MOST of the community on my server (Khyber) is helpful and welcoming to new gamers. Teamwork is a must in most quests. Guilds are numerous, yet most are still of high quality. The only let down I can see is the minority of players who, dare I say it, are the "elitists". Thats anywhere you go, so it doesn't constitute the deduction of a star.
Recommendation: Go to the website, download the 7-day trial, and TRY it. Hopefully you love it as much as I do.
"Extremelly Addictive, Intense and Rewarding", First off, I'm a bit shocked the low ratings this game has gotten. Most of the ones I've read are completely undeserved and without merit, IMO.
Second, this game drew me in a few minutes. Sure there's LOTS and LOTS of things to learn, but that's what makes this game fun -- i.e. it requires thinking, planning, etc. It's definitely *NOT* geared for the folks who just like to shoot/kill things for the sake of it. Neither is for those who like to do things by themselves -- most if not all quests/adventures are team-oriented.
Third, many have cited the lack solo play. This, while partially true, IMO is what makes this game stand above the rest of MMPORPG's. I'm a team-oriented person and take great satisfaction when my group/team achieves certain goals not by individual skill, but as a team where every team member does his or her job. Also, as I understand it, D&D was never meant to be a solo game, thus why this is reflected in the online version.
Fourth, the graphics are stunning! I'm impressed how beautiful and (sur)realistic the graphics are -- even in my 1.5-year-old computer with little or no game-enhanced hardware.
Fifth, this game becomes extremely challenging once characters reach level 7 or so. However, this is when all the learning (or mistakes) done in the first levels surface and become obvious. So, just as in real life, every action has consequences, so think before you choose (feats/enhancements).
In short, I believe this game is worth EVERY penny. It's very fun, graphically attractive and definitely NOT for the first-person-shooter and/or the instant reward crowds.
"Kiss my STR score!", This is like playing Pen and Paper D&D, but you get visuals beyond poorly-drawn sketches. Its like tabletop without the expensive pieces and confusing rules.
It has streamlined the rules to make them a part of the background, useful only when its time to buy gear and level up. The rest of the time is spent swinging swords and spells at crazy monsters and exploring amazing landscapes.
The graphics are amazing and detailed. I didn't really notice the attention to detail until I was exploring a farmland covered in mist and heard the squish of moist earth being stepped on. Its truly amazing. Weapons have many appearances, making you sometimes choose between the weapon that's statistically superior or the one that looks really friggin awesome (its best when you get a statistically superior weapon that looks really friggin cool!).
If you're a DnD-style nerd that ever enjoyed Runescape, WoW, or NWN, This is for you.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"I really really wanted to like this one", I sounded like the perfect blend of the Challange of an RPG and the Online Community of a Massive Roleplayer. Unfortunatly from a Roleplayers point of view it's just another massive multiplayer repeating the same quests over and over, grinding, farming, ect. ect. The only real differance is it does have a nice D&D "Feel" about it with all the newly trademarked monsters and such but in reality it's not close to an RPG.
"Better than World of Warcraft", As a player of D&D from the early 70's, I think this game is as close as you can get to playing the "manual" version. The main thing that some old D&D players my miss in giving the player character the personality that can only be role played while in person with a group of real people. You can try to role play with live chat but it seems silly if nobody else is. Overall this is a fun game.
"Sadly, not impressed", I tried it, then cancelled it. It was too much initial work, not enough play. My comparision was based on Diablo II==100%
"Deserves a second look", The expectations for this game were through the roof and a lot of people were dissapointed when it launched. One thing that is important to keep in mind is that it is an MMO and so the reviews that were drawn up the day this game launched may not be so relevant at this point (8 months down the road as of this writing). The game has grown in leaps and bounds in this time.
There is someone in another Amazon review who complained about bugs and lack of customer support. Its true that there were a number of bugs at launch (quest item decay, monsters not spawning correctly all the time, etc). These weren't common but were pervasive enough to be a problem. And at that time some of the customer service policies were not in place to handle these situations. But Turbine has ALWAYS had a good rep for customer service and they made good on that in the case of DDO too. They never were rude or uncommunicative in in-game support. They never had long wait times for support like other popular MMO's have had. And lastly they figured out ways to resolve some of the quest breaking bugs.
Turbine will have released three modules by the end of this month and a number of smaller content updates. All of the major bugs at launch have long since been addressed, major amounts of content have been added, the level cap has been raised, game systems have been added to reward playing through all content (not the the quests that were easiest / had the best loot), game systems for auction houses, pvp, and a mail system have *all* been added since the game launched. In short this game is twice what it was at launch, and all this without an expansion pack.
DDO delivered on its promise of delivering a Massive Multiplayer Online game with the basic game rules of D&D 3.5 (with real time twitchy combat mechanics to boot). If you want to storm an ancient tomb with your buddies and go head to head with iconic D&D monsters (mind flayers, beholders, etc) this game is for you... and with all the additions in the last 9 months now might be the time for you take a look.
"A great social experience...", With voice chat, I love playing this game. Even when my friends aren't online, I can usually find a fun group very quickly. We'll be cracking jokes and telling stories the whole time we adventure.
I've found no shortage of good content and quests. As characters get more power, more quests open up; plus, they update the game with new quests and other content every couple of weeks as part of the subscription.
It's a great game! Try the 7 days for free - it's worth seeing if it's something you'll play regularly. It's great if you can get a couple of friends to play on the regular, 'cause you get to socialize with friends and waste time on the computer simultaneously.
