"System Mechanic 6 is a big step up from Version 5", System Mechanic has been a favorite of mine for years because it allows you to control which programs are loaded at Windows startup. Version 6 is a big step up from previous versions in its diagnostic capabilities and info screens. I like it, though it takes a bit to understand the greater detail. It also throws in more capabilities in other areas (such as spyware) and has added a new automated complete cleanup features.

Version 7 is available, but having 40 computers to oversee, I like the low price of last-years version. I've read reviews that say SysMech is too agressive in deleting registry junk, but I find its good/bad filter to be flawless. Never any complaints from users. A great tool to clear out Windows accumulated junk.


"Iolo tech support OUT OF CONTROL", Installed System Mechanic 7 on Pentium 4 laptop running Windows XP and it crashed the machine to the point the only way to bring it back to life was to system-restore to the nearest pre-Iolo restore point. Managed to capture the error codes and emailed them to Iolo tech support. Unable to elicit a response from tech support other than automated emails (half of which try to sell me the product all over again). Left voicemails with customer support and even with the corporate receptionist. No response. No response to request for refund.
OBVIOUSLY, MANAGEMENT IS UNWILLING TO STAFF TECH SUPPORT WITH ANYTHING LIKE WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO HAVE LIVE PEOPLE ADDRESS REAL ISSUES. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

"The Worst Customer Service I have ever experienced", I bought the SW through ZoneLabs and for some reason the user and license key I got are useless to install the already-paid updates of this SW, even after following suggested fixes. I have sent 4 emails to customer service (no tel. is ever provided anywhere) and I have always received the same (useless for my case) canned reply with (useless) suggestions to fix the problem. The SW seemed to work fine when it worked but at this moment I have had to uninstall the product. I would not consider renewing or buying again from this company. The customer service is just AWFUL

"Screws Up Your Computer", Screwed up my wireless and my scanner. Still cannot get my wireless to work again after months of trying. Made no difference in computer performance. Did not fix any problems. File cleanup takes over 12 hours with only modest results. Don't buy it!

"It Was Good for Me", I've had only a positive experience with SM6: all good, nothing bad, and I really loved the bundled Kaspersky anti-virus program. It makes all three of my computers run 500% faster than ever before; on the other hand, the prior Symantec AV program took over the operating system, causing my laptop to become all but useless. All three computers, incidentally, run Win XP, and the newest came with XP Media.

Nevertheless, I must complain that the program now starts every time with a message to upgrade to 7, but I cannot access Web site - indeed, I tried to maybe 10 times before I finally gave up! But because SM7 does not come with Kaspersky, I would have to unload it, something I am not willing to do. Period. I love Kaspersky so much that I have bought upgrade to it as stand alone.

On the negative side, trying to uninstall SM6 - something I did to try to go to SM7 - caused my newest computer to crash and killed about a week of time correcting, and the horrible reviews on SM7 have made me decide to stay with SM6, where I am happy!

Since bad reviews abound on SM7, I will stick with 6 until it doesn't work.

"DANGEROUS--STAY AWAY", I was a user of System Mechanic 5, which was a decent product, so I upgraded to 6. This version tries to make it easier to use by removing most of the decisions a user has to make. The only problem is it makes BAD decisions. At this point I would not be surprized if I had to take down my entire system to get it working properly again. Frankly I do not understand the positive reviews of this product. My advice is to STAY AWAY. But if you decide to use it, before you do back everything up with a Ghost type product so you can completely undo the changes. Despite what Iolo promises, they cannot undo all of the changes their software makes. Also, don't use the Wizards, which sound great but will do all kinds of bad things if left to make their own decisions.

"Terrible product with lots of problems", Installation was problematic with lots of lock ups. I had to snooze my anti-virus and shut down my firewall software and try a few times to install. It automatically includes itself in startup and I would recommend running msconfig to uncheck it in the startup section and go through the options in the software itself to stop the same from happening again. It is odd how it works and I have not noticed any improvements in my system but have actually noticed things getting worse. I would not buy this software if I had it to do over suggest people stay away from it.

"IT Professional's Opinion ", I am an IT professional responsible for maintaining a network of 300+ computers; I heard about this software on the internet and decided to try it on my home Dell running Windows XP SP2. I'm a hardcore online gamer, so speed and freedom from freezes is essential. As soon as I installed this program, my CPU usage jumped from 12 to 100%. My RAM level was exceeded and my system crashed. It took me 4 hours to remove the program and repair my machine using programs I trust. Stay away from this program.

"Great product", I use this product and have read the horrible reviews it has received.

If you are a computer novice and have never maintained your computer it is going to be frustrating to install this and have it thoroughly repair/improve your system. It will take a long time to do the initial job (on both of my systems it took the overnight hours to complete the process) and I am sure many novice users would get frustrated long before then and give up. I have been using computers since the late 1970's.

However, I have noticed improvement in my system performance since completing the process and recommend this product.

"Great Utility Product", System Mechanic 6 Standard has been nothing but golden to me. Sorry to hear so many have had trouble with it, but it installed and runs perfectly for me and helps me maintain my computer on a weekly basis.

I find the interface user friendy and the menus nicely laid out, and the utility wizards work nicely and with effeciancy. It cleared junk files from my computer, found almost four gigs of duplicate files for me to consider, checked my hard drive for errors in need of repair, and fixed, compacted, and cleaned my registry. It also has a few nice Explorer tweaks that make using Windows more conveniant. Such as making your entire computer accessible to you by adding a folder tree to the left side of Windows main folders and Control Panel. This is really handy for navigation through your files and is a less irritating way of getting to where you want to go around your computer.

I also appreciate it's Advanced Start Up Programs and Advanced Process Manager features. These two features provide insight, information, and control over every aspect of what is running on your computer. The Advanced Start Up Program feature found a peice of persistent malware/spyware that I would see pop up from time to time in Spybot and HiJack This scans, but which could not be eliminated. I scoured and searched my computer manually and could not find or trace the file/folder that contained this pest. System Mechanic 6 detected it, opened the folder, and allowed me to manually delete it. Good deal.

So far as people complaing that it runs in the background or they can't shut it off or it's a resource hog, well, that's not true. I use it once a week, it doesn't start with my computer, and it uses no resources unless you are using it, or want it to run in the background. Which I don't. Who would? You can use this program as you wish.

I have a pretty ordinary computer. 5 browsers, 3 IM services, MS Office Pro, Trillian, a music service, games, a few Photoshops, two skinning programs, Google Desktop, Yahoo Widgets, a graphic design program, MS Money, a few word processing programs, and all the other computer stuff. Not to mention the little fun programs I've picked up from the internet over the years. Utilites, services, small cosmetic programs to enhance the Windows theme. The usual stuff, but it adds up. I have 24 processes running at start up. And that's with an AV program, a firewall, and anti spyware program running.

Point being I had 27 running before using this product. Which means my computer was well managed before I bought this product. This product is not a miracle worker. It will not bring a dead or grossly mismanaged computer back to life. It will not rid you of viruses or stubborn spyware. Nor will it compensate for user error, and it warns you and backs up your changes throughout. But if you are looking for a good utility program that will help you maintain and improve the performance and quality of your Windows OS, look no further then System Mechanic 6. It's as good as any other program like it, and better then most.
