"Using DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-20" I recently purchased the DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 with Street Atlas 2007 program for my laptop. I was very simple to install and I've loaded it both on my laptop and home desktop. I will use the desktop load as a reference. The laptop install will be used in place of an expensive Handheld or vehicle mounted GPS unit. The DeLorme program comes with a GPS attachment that connects to your USB and sits on your dash. The program is easy to use and shows more detail than the expensive units. I am an older male and have a little trouble seeing the small handheld units. The 15.4 screen on my laptop gives a better display of where you are going, plus it gives turn by turn instructions verbally as well as by road view. The program was put together very well. I even tried to get the program "lost" by making wrong turns, but ending up on another route that the program finally stopped telling me to turn around and instead told me it was "reconfiguring my route", then telling me I was 29 miles north of my ultimate destination finding the new route. The verbal directions are very well done and don't sound like your usual "artificial intelligence" speaker, but instead use words and phrases easily understandable. I feel the DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 program to be a very good value and look forward to my 8 state vacation this summer.
"Needs Improvement" Purchased this product last summer for use with laptop. Receiver worked fine - initial position fixes were a bit slow, but seemed to improve the longer I used the program. The biggest issue for me was the routing algorithm. Recommended routes from starting points to destinations were, in many cases, far from the quickest or shortest (depending on selection). Use of 'vias' allowed me to eventually get a reasonable route, but this was time-consuming. The other major weakness, in my opinion, was with the active routing. During a trip, frequently the program thought that I was off-route and would start announcing "off-route, recalculating route" for several maddening minutes (I frequently muted the speaker for these periods). Also, a small but annoying percentage of turn directions were incorrect, and were sometimes announced only a few seconds before the directed turn.
The voice-activated command feature worked well for me. Another note - Canada street maps contained with this version of Street Atlas are useless.
Overall, I've found that the program was of some help when navigating real-time, but was also a frequent distraction while driving, and I haven't used the program for awhile.
"Typical wierd Delorme product" I am a GPS sort of guy, love maps, map software etc... I bought this for a business trip to Detroit, a city that I rarely visit, to use with my new laptop. Tried to install the software on the plane and couldn't due to a driver issue (resolved later - no thanks to the installation software or Delorme). So when I got my rental car I went ahead and rented the Garmin C550 with the car.
After getting the Earthmate software installed later in the trip I was able to compare the dedicated product to the Delorme product - There was no comparison. I had become used to the super easy, accurate and fast Garmin product and essentially could not get Earthmate to work.
It took forever (not an overstatement) to locate satellites. Really the most frustrating part of this product is the software interface. I use several mapping products MS Trips and street, Garmin etc.. and I simply cold not figure this out. Totally unintuitive, totally non-windows standard.
I should have know before I bought this product as other Delorme products (Topo USA) also have a similar non functional interface. This product is going back.
"Blows away Microsoft's Streets and Trips" I purchased Streets & Trips with the GPS a few years ago and upgraded the software as it was available... loved it. Then my GPS died, so I decided to give the Delorme (with GPS) a try. The Delorme software and GPS is so much better than Streets & Trips. It's kind of like going from notepad to Word.
"Very good product" I got this as a gift for my husband to use with his Delorme Software and he has really enjoyed it and uses it every day.

What our customer's say!
"Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-20", I'm not at all satisfied with this product. I also own Microsofts GPS and I like it very much. I had the Microsoft one first and wanted to try this to see which is better.
"not for truckers", If you are a truck diver this is not for you, it help a lillte bit but it gives sometimes routes that are not good for trukers like , thru mountains even trying to choose just interstates.
"Hands down the WORST option out there!", I have owned the 2006 version of this program since it came out. I travel for a living and have used it on both coasts and in the midwest EXTENSIVELY. The ONLY thing it is good for is giving you a rough idea of how long your trip will take. THE MAPS ABSOULETLY STINK EVERYWHERE!!!!! There is a MAJOR 4 lane hiway near my home (Hwy 2 from Lincoln NE to Nebraska City, NE) that has been there for 5 to 10 years and it isn't even on the map (It still shows the old 2 lane hwy 2 and tries to redirect you OVER AND OVER AND OVER again). I have found this also in at least 2 other states. It has even directed me to the wrong TOWN!!! (In California when I was going to Stanford University)
SAVE YOURSELF SOME HEADACHE AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!
"Save Your Money ", Delorme Earthmate LT-20 ... If I could rate this product lower than one star I would! I purchased this program thinking it was as good as it used to be in 2004. NOT! First off I was led to believe it was ther 2007 version...it's not! It's 2006 Street Atlas. And they want $10 more to give you the 2007 SA update. That's not gonna happen! I 've tried everything I know and can't even make it open to MY city. It opens to Washington DC...I live in Southern CA. It lists my home on a street 1/2 a mile away. Personal preferences such as POIs and info for trip planning have to be set each and EVERY time you open the program. There's no such thing as personalizing it and saving your preferences so you can quickly set up a route knowing that all your preferences are in place. It couldn't even find the North Rim of the Grand Canyon until I put the latitude & longitude in for it! What good is that??? When I set up POI to find Campgrounds in a certain area, it cannot find them even when "I" put the names in....much less perform a search on it's own. This program is absolutely beyond useless. Worst money I've ever spent on a map program. I won't be buying this again!
"Several problems with GPS LT-20", I recently tried this product and found several problems with the result that I will be returning it under Delorme's 30 day Money Back Guarantee - It guides you by saying the name of the street or exit to take however it is sometimes difficult to understand what is said - It does not seem to be as accurate as the navigator which is built into my Toyota. It can be off by 100 feet. By this I mean it thinks the car is located at some location point but in reality that point is 100 feet away. - It guides you by saying something like "take a left turn at Main street that is 100 feet away" but if you are not good at judging distance and if there's no street sign or it is dark then you may miss the turn. In my Toyota, the nav makes a ping sound about 20 feet prior to the turn and before you get to that point, it will say take a left turn at sound so this makes it very easy to know when to turn - Putting the lap top on the passenger chair and running the wire from the GPS on the dashboard to the lap top is not ideal On the positive side, it does an ok job of routing but not as good as the built in unit. Therefore, too many problems so will be returning it

"The LT-20 Does not locate satellites quickly", I tried this set but returned it because the LT-20 refused to find the satellites in a timely manner. I called Delorme and a rude agent told me it took 15 minutes for it to lock on. I said that was a long time and he said all GPS software takes that long. I explained that I hooked up my Garmin GPS to the software and it locked on in less than 1 minute. He was rude and disagreed. Needless to say I took the package back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with Locator. The software installed easily and the GPS locked onto the satellites in less than 2 minutes from a cold start. The next time I used it the time to lock on was less than one minute. Delorme has some good software but needs to find a better GPS unit and hire nicer agents.
"Good Product", This is a good inexpensive GPS system. It does a good job of tracking your location. The map is excellent. The labeling is not as good as the previous version. POI finder is top notch.
"Its pretty good if you use it with different GPS software", Its a great GPS once its starts and detects the satellites (sometimes it can take up to 5 mins). I used it with iGuidance and that software is the whole world of difference. I can actually hear what the direction are saying vs the software that came with the GPS unit (robotic sounds, need to subtitle that for me PLEASE!)
"Don't risk your life with this product !!!", This product could put user/customer's life at risk. The mapping software navigates user turning into a one way street and takes you to a very remote off-road. This is the worst product that I have used in my life.
"You get what you pay for", The only redeeming quality about this GPS system is that it's cheap. I used it on a 1,000 mile trip on the east coast the week after I got it. The navigation is poor. I found that I often had to look over to the laptop screen because I was "off route" so often due to the poor maps. The system repeated the same annoying problems that I see in other feedback.
1) The unit would show me being off the road even though I was on an Interstate. In this case it would continually recalculate the route and diretc me to take exits to get off the highway and circle around.
2) It directed me to make turns onto one-way streets in the wrong direction.
3) It could not locate a POI that turned out to be a few hundred yards away
4) It often did not know the correct side of the road for my destination
5) It doesn't provide a chime when it's time for a turn. It will tell you the turn is a half-mile ahead, but that might be the last time you hear an instruction.
6) In one case, it got me to my destination (at least close enough) but couldn't guide me back to my starting point.
The GPS receiver seemed to acquire and hold the satellite signal well. But the maps are poor, as is the verbal instruction - it sounds like a 1980's computer generated voice.
If you're looking for a trustworthy guide in unfamiliar areas - this ISN'T it.
This is going back asap.
