"Fantastic Fun"
I know there are Xbox and PS2 versions of the game, but I think that the performance issues people had were due to that older hardware. Psychonauts playing on a fairly modern rig at max details ran smoothly and sounded and looked great.

I deliberately did not buy it when it first came out because I wasn't sure if I would like it based solely on the artwork of the game. In a sense, I was afraid it was too 'kiddy' for my tastes. Once you get past some of the character models and the opening of the game, you are rewarded with a fun 3D platformer with a fun and frequently dark storyline. As a Psychonaut cadet, your job is to enter the minds of the game's characters and some of them, including several confined to a mental institute, can be frightening and overwhelming places.

After completing the game I can say that the art direction is fantastic and is completely suitable for the kind of game that it is. The audio is great: dialog and soundtrack are perfectly suited to the characters and the settings you visit, and on my first time through I reached level 96/100. It is worth the pittance you'll pay for it now, and I still feel guilty for finding it for only $8. There are plenty of games that leave you feeling ripped off, muttering things like, "I paid $XX for that?" In this case, you'll be richly rewarded if you're looking for a fun game that requires a little creative thinking and a keen eye for all the game's hidden objects. Having played it a mere 3 months ago, I would consider it the best game of the year, beating out all the new games that were released all year.

"There's a reason for all the 5 star reviews..."
Okay, so I'm a thrift shopper. I rarely buy games when they're first released, preferring instead to wait for the price to drop. But I just kept putting off getting this game, despite all of the good reviews I read. I'm not the biggest fan of platformers, and the idea of a psychically themed platformer just didn't really appeal to me. Well, I'm definitely glad I changed my mind. This game is fantastic!

The premise of the game is that you're gifted with a lot of psychic potential, and are attending a camp for your fellow misfits. Well, things quickly turn sinister at the camp, and naturally it's up to you to set things right.

This game just exudes style. The characters are all well-developed and each have their own distinct personality. You get to know them somewhat better than you would your average video game character, since you'll be traveling into their minds. Aside from the main camp area in the real-world, the game's stages are set in the minds of the people around you. For example, your first psychic encounter is with your drill instructor, whose mind is naturally set up as a military themed obstacle course for you to complete. Another (very reserved) character's mind is just a cube in space (art deco styled, of course), and you're free to run along any of its sides. This, he says, is a well-ordered mind. Things don't stay well-ordered for long, however, and you soon find out what happens when a reserved person loses his composure. And then there's the godzilla-inspired level (and you're godzilla)...

While in each level, you collect figments of imagination (hologram-like things), mental cobwebs, and other power-ups to increase your own psychic powers. One really funny collectible is mental baggage. You'll find various types of bags, sad and crying, in each level. If you find the bags' matching tags, then they'll be happy, and you'll be on your way to increasing your psychic abilities. While this may sound like it would get to be repetitive, the humor, engaging level design, and really fun psychic powers keep things interesting. This game is from the mind of Tim Schafer, after all.

The graphics are very stylish, and still look good today, despite the game's age. I'm running a Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA 8800 GTX system, and I can max out all quality settings with no problem whatsoever. The game is also very stable. I have yet to experience a hard crash or a crash to desktop.

The controls are also wonderfully balanced. Games such as these live or die based on how solid their control scheme is, and this one delivers. Movement is intuitive, camera control is excellent, and using psychic powers is simple (you map powers to a button on the fly, via an in-game menu) and fun. I can't imagine playing this game with the keyboard/mouse combo, though. A gamepad is highly recommended. I use the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2, which is basically just a wireless Playstation 2 controller for the PC.

To sum it up, there is simply no reason not to get this game. It's fun for kids of all ages (even if platform games aren't generally your thing), and at the price you can find it for now, it's a steal.

"Video Games are ART"
Don't be fooled by the seemingly obscure premise - this is not a game promising originality and delivering poor content and programming. Here you get the big ideas and a big game. Crazy innovative ideas all around, tons of high quality content, amazingly fluid gameplay. Probably the most stylistically developed game ever. Written brilliantly, with poignant situations that are illustrated with depth and sensitivity. The biggest accomplishment of this game: it's actually funny.

"Goddamn, this game rocks"
I haven't had this much fun since "the last express", and that was 1996!. This game rocks! It offers a new level of characters, plot, and suspense. I mean really, this is the best ever. Enjoy!

"Hours and hours and hours of fun"
Good Game - so many levels it is like a main game plus its sequel. I was surprised how much you get in one game.. i still haven't finished it (I'm at the Meat Circus level).

Some difficulty with all the buttons that you need to use in the later levels, but I guess that's just part of the challenge. There were some bugs in the software leaving you to save and reload to get your character out if he gets stuck in between objects. I loved the Waterloo level - nice touches, and some challenging movement/navigation problems to overcome..

Hints are built into the game, so you don't need to look for cheats/hints on the web.

What our customer's say!

"Preeettttty Colorsssss...", I enjoyed my time spent with this visually innovative title, but honestly most of the fun was had as a spectator of environment and character interactions. That's both a compliment to the creative brilliance of Psychonauts's art style, and a jab at its most basic platforming mechanics and story path.

The good and the bad of Psychonauts's quirky genius are presented immediately. The stylized Psychonaut campground is brilliantly colored with an almost 3-D appearance to every surface. For a game designed on last generation consoles, it's stunning visually. (Widescreen HD is one reason for the PC version's superiority). Character design is equally arresting, although the exaggerated Burton-esque shapes make everyone seem more like potatoes than people. Initially, the controls are breezy fun with simple, responsive jump, attack, and interact maneuvers. And the game set up my Logitech gamepad with perfect calibration and button mapping right off the bat. Voicework is first rate, and the Double Fine crew wrote tight, geniunely witty dialogue for the characters. That's a rarity in games, as perfect timing is tough to achieve in interactive entertainment. In short, the game is a blast to goof around with.

Environmental design is creative and whimsical...sometimes to a fault. It's a joy to experience a fresh twist on all the old platforming conventions. And yet, when trying to break away from standards, sometimes we're reminded why things are the way they are. By taking all the straight lines and making them curved, incongrous, and sometimes just spatially incorrect, the developers made many basic functions of the game more difficult than necessary. Jumps are needlessly tough to navigate at times, as are the jumbled up inventory menus. The monetary exchange and item collecting is so convoluted that I needed constant reminders how it all worked. More conventional design, in many areas, would have benefitted the basic gameplay.

And yet when you witness the breathtaking artistry of certain levels, like the neon backlit Velvet World, or fight entertaining bosses like The Critic, it's hard to argue with Double Fine's choices. Psychonauts keeps you on your toes, unable to predict the next story episode. The game is certainly never boring, nor is it always comprehensible. The jumbled mixture of various motifs and themes within each stage ensures that the gameplay will never lose your attention, even if it occasionally feels directionless and nonsensical. The game's hero, Raz, interacts with this world both through physical and telekinetic means, with abilities added slowly with the player's progression. Most of these powers are genuinely fun and useful, although sometimes imprecise and clumsy, and make exploration of secret areas and scaling of hard-to-reach heights a lot of fun.

In summation, Psychonauts is a really amazing experience that turns the platforming game upside down. Very often it does this literally, and not always to its benefit. Whimsy isn't necessarily the best foundation for a game, but it sure makes for a pretty picture.

"Dissapointed.", It was either PC Gamer, PC World, or PC Games that said "This is the best game you never played" around 2006 or so. I decided to try it out on Game Tap to see if it was worth buying.

The good: You can interact with your environment about as much as you could in Serious Sam & the areas you can explore are much bigger than in Fable: the Lost Chapters. You get to hear the voice of Invzder Zim's voice actor & the voice acting all-around is good. The character designs have that Tim Burton grotesqueness, which is refreshing since only American McGee ever seems to encorporate it.

The mediocre: I'm pretty sure this is a consol port; I've seen worse controls, like the ones in Harry Potter 4. The music is neither annoying nor memorable.

The bad: It's not nearly as ammusing as others were telling me. The game causes cramps in the left hand & the same annoying chest tightness you get when jogging. The actual combat levels are harder than they need to be, solely because of the camera angles; the camera does not want to turn when you really need it to & doesn't look straight, so you will get pummeled from behind & jump to your death a lot. Extra annoyance comes from when you think you've finally passed the level only to find out that you've only done a small fraction of it; like Sasha's mind cube. The Save feature isn't so good either because you won't restart exactly where you saved. You might get heavily annoyed at your innability to reach the target & wish the game had a god-mode just so you could get through the damned level, but there isn't one. The map is pretty bad & the whole menu isn't very self-explanitory.

"My favorite game of all time", This game has everything--great humor and dialogue, fun action sequences, a good storyline with unpredictable (relatively)twists. It was fun for the family and we still quote the game today. We've owned it for 3 years and played it through many times. I wish there would be a follow on, because the characters were great.

"Played it all the way through, which I rarely do", It's a fun game with a wonderfully wacky sense of humor. Gameplay is challenging and varies throughout the game so that you never get bored. I get bored easily, and the fact that I played all the way through to the end really says a lot. If you want an enjoyable game that has been (sadly) rather overlooked - check this one out today.

"quirky and awesome", Although the gameplay wasn't anything amazing in itself, the quirky style, story, and humor were enough to make me love this game.

"where did this come from ?!?", This is one of the best games you've never played! (or perhaps even heard of) I saw this game on steam, if not for that, never would have heard of it. Mentioned it to a friend and he said "get it". I didn't argue - thankfully. He told me microsoft had this game, put a ton of $$ into it, then decided to let it go, then majesco picked it up and put it out, didn't do so well, now it's on steam. If microsoft woulda kept this and marked it, it woulda made a ton!! This is easily one of the top 5 platforms I've ever seen (and yes, I'm a big gamer), and the level designs are incredible! At first appearance it may look like a kids game, but I'm not sure any kid could even pass the first level. I own this for PC and cannot comment on other systems, but it rocks!! I personnly give this my "no suck" guarantee! buy it!

"Imaginative Platformer", In Psychonauts, the gameplay is a lot like Mario Sunshine with some elements of Legend of Zelda added. Except, instead of water squirter abilities, you get psychic abilities like telekinesis, firestarting, and mind bullets. And the storyline is really freaky. And it looks like a colorful version of Nightmare before Christmas. (or Invader Zim) Anyhow, you play Raz, a youngster with latent psychic abilities who seeks to harness his powers at a summer camp for the paranormally gifted. But something freaky is going on (in addition the the other freaky stuff that is a normal part of camp life), and other children at the camp are turning up with their brains missing. In addition to recovering stolen minds, you also must enter the minds of others from time to time, and deal with personal demons, emotional baggage, and other manifestations of the psyche. Anyhow, the gameplay is very fun. (Get a gamepad if you got the PC version, though. The keyboard is not the easiest way to play.) There's a lot of exploring, problem solving, and hidden things to find. There's also a lot of humour, such as the level that is a pastiche of badly-dubbed Godzilla movies where you get to be the giant monster!(Goggleor is invulnerable to bullets! And love!) Overall, a great game with a bizzarre and witty story from the creator of Grim Fandango.

"Psychonauts", This game has a really good storyline and is very fun to play but it is kinda a short game. I hope they come out with a second one because it kinda leaves you at the ending and some of the things that go in it are sometimes hard to figure out so you have to think. It is a good game overall so I would suggest buying it.

"Grandmother bought this game.", I tried to play this game to pass a little time, that's not what happen by the time I got to certain parts of the game I was grabbing for my blood pressure meds. So I gave it to my grand kids and they loved the game.

"Creative and fun!!", Great game! A story about a summer camp for psychic kids filled to the brim with fantastic art, humor, and wild characters.

I'm a professional animator and I was totally struck by the design of the characters and the emotion and humor they emit. Each character you meet is well acted and wildly unique. The art direction is GORGEOUS -- like Hollywood feature gorgeous -- and it's in every corner of the game! The sets, the props, the scenery, the script -- it's very obvious that alot of love and creative thought went in to this project.

Plus it's FUN! I'm not much for games where you jump around and smash/kill/collect things, but this was really a hoot! It's got enough running and jumping to satisfy gamers, and it's got enough creativity and story to satisfy ANYONE. From the camp grounds to running around the collective unconsions, chating with the wild characters you meet, fighting off inner demons, unlocking the workings of each unique mind from the inside out -- how cool! I heartily recommend this game to anyone who wants something engaging, funny, and surprising in every way!
