"Really disappointing."
This game was extremely disappointing for me.The profanity is unnecessary and trite-a forced use of the F-bomb that fits neither the dialogue nor the atmosphere. The lack of an ending:this game ended so fast I think I have whiplash.I'm pretty sure it ended because I saw the credits roll.Only the ending from a S.King movie can abuse a person this bad.The game play is linear but the story line didn't make up for it.I think the only puzzle I enjoyed was the lockpicking. It starts easy,so you can understand it, and then became a bit harder in the end(so you can think). The rest were either stupidly easy or impossible(the cookies!!).I think if this game ended,I could recommend it, but I feel like I just got ripped off.I wouldn't bother unless you are a die-hard adventure fan and need a fix.

"Visually stunning with a great story line"
We loved this game. Although everyone should be warned that it was intended to be the middle of a 3 part game, but the 3rd installment will never be finished. As such, the game just sort of stops rather than ending leaving you with an unsatisfied taste in your mouth.

The graphics are exceptional as is the voice acting and script. We personally felt that these qualities were so good that they overcame the fairly linear puzzles. In fact, this more like an interactive movie than an adventure game. The fact that we didn't really notice this till the game was over is a strong testament to the quality of the dialog and storyline. Those who are looking for especially challenging and plentiful puzzles may be disappointed however.

"Still Life"
I really enjoyed this game. It was easy to follow the story line. All you had to do was listen. They didn't delibrately hide things from you and you didn't have to deal with choosing what to say next. I wish all the games were this good.

"Not much character"
Its fun, its bloody, and sometimes thrilling. Is it bloody thrilling? Well, no. Still Life is a great game to play while waiting for something more epic to be produced. I liked the challenge of the past and present storylines that intertwined throughout this adventure. What Still Life lacks is engaging characters and a decent ending. I get the feeling this was a game with an intended sequel that was never made...The player is left completely hanging and with no closure. Not exactly a nice reward for spending hours of time devoted to problem solving and some annoying pixel-hunting. If you are bored, in need of adventure, try the Longest Journey, or Syberia first-you'll find much more depth and satisfaction from either of these choices.

"A Nice Way To Pass Time"
I love adventure RPGs, and this one did not fail to please. I must say, however, that even a strong story line does not overcome the boredom of watching a character amble slowly from one location to another or take long elevator rides. As with many ARPGs, this game involves a *lot* of gathering info at one location then having to navigate back to another and so on, and so on, and so on.

Also, I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers who noted the difficulty -- and time consumption -- of some of the puzzles, particularly the one requiring lockpicking. If I hadn't found a walkthrough online I probably would've given up. (There's a hint for ya.)

Don't believe the reviews that say you never find out who dunnit. You do (if you recognize the character's face), but the creators are determined to make you sit through *all* of the credits to find out. Even then, well, the emotional payoff isn't as big as I thought it would be.

Still a great way to pass about 8 or 9 hours, and it beats what's been playing at the movies lately.

What our customer's say!

"Incredible Game!", This game was more then I expected & very good. The story keeps your interest from the start to finish, there is no guessing where to go or who to talk to next, it is captivating & has unexpected twists, even surprising humor. This adventure does not have a boring moment.

Impressive and fun gameplay because it has easy navigation & an intelligent story that keeps you wondering what is next. The cutscenes, graphics, design, lighting, characters, voice acting, music, all is fantastic in my opinion. A couple of puzzles were difficult but the rest were not. A good walkthrough is available online for anyone that doesn't want to be stuck on a time consuming puzzle.

This game is available for Windows Vista. I highly recommend it if a gruesome story & violent scenes are not too disturbing to you. The profanity in this game is rare, however, the nudity, violent acts to women, & gruesome scenes are not, but is all part of the story.

"Great Story ", My dad gave me this game after he had played it. It's very challenging, and I loved the story line right from the start.
The voice acting is a little strange at times, but overall it's a good script.
The only thing that bothers me is a few of the challenges/activities within the game can't be solved by logic, or information found at the scene. The one I can think of in particularly is picking a lock. Other than that the game is fun and I would recommend it to other people.

"Awesome", This one is awesome. I recommend it.
It makes more sense to have played Post Mortem before this, but I doubt that it would make a difference if you haven't. Besides, Post Mortem is not the most fun I thought (but it's not too bad).
Still Life was REALLY good & I can't wait for the sequel.

"Fantastic adventure game, too bad about the ending...", I really, really enjoyed this game. If you like adventure games and detective games, you should enjoy the gameplay here. This was one of the best 2D point-and-click adventure games I'd played in a long time, and I would have given it 5 stars except for one thing: The Ending.

The ending of this game is abrupt and does not resolve the plot. It's very frustrating, especially as I was so involved in the mystery and the characters. Apparently, there was meant to be a sequel, but the company went under.

So, if you love adventure games and want to play a nice one, play this, but be warned.

"What a piece of garbage!!", Even at 6 bucks at Odd Lot was a rip off! Incredibly stupid and vulgar dialog with no point other than to be gross, cryptic clues so far from reality that only an online walkthrough could help, boring and stupid flow. I have rarely played a game as bad as this! Quarter of the way through I just had to uninstall it, glue the box back together and ship it back to those morons at the Adventure Company! Another company to ignore in the future. Beware, you will be disappointed!

"One of the best ever...", Well, I've finished "Still Life" and I'm happy to report it was a real treat.

First off, let me say that playing the first game in this series, "Post Mortem," is not essential to enjoying "Still Life," although it can help in getting some background to the goings-on. The various minor quirks of "Post Mortem" may deter some players from continuing on the journey, but trust me when I say that the cons of "Post Mortem" barely exist in "Still Life." And, while I do recommend playing "Post Mortem" prior to "Still Life," it's not necessary to enjoy "Still Life," a far superior experience.

Of the many terrific features of "Still Life" is the graphics. They are, without a doubt, some of the finest graphics ever made. In fact, to compare the graphics to games like "The Longest Journey"/Dreamfall" or either "Syberia" adventures (two halves of one game) would be unfair, since, although the graphics of those games are stellar, "Still Life" supercedes them for ambience and sheer eye-candy.

Then there are the game's controls. Dreamcatcher and Microids, in my humble opinion, have reached the pinnacle of controllability with "Still Life." Whether using the mouse or the keyboard, the icons are clear in their intentions, easy to understand, and never ambiguous. Every adventure game should use the controls from "Still Life" as their prototype for all future games.

Next on the list would have to be the attachment derived from the characters. Not only has the acting and writing improved since "Post Mortem," but now the McPherson family is three generations strong, what with playing both grandfather Gus and granddaughter Victoria (as well as son and father Pat being a part of the scheme). I played "Post Mortem," but I became more attached to Gus in this game, and becoming interspersed with Victoria came as naturally as breathing. She's just super.

The primary comparison that can be made to "Post Mortem" is the realism. In "Still Life," the writing and acting are quantum leaps ahead of its predecessor. The language and graphical realism are no places for the kiddies, and just for that it gets my vote. It wasn't pablumized for our adult consumption.

And the bugs are far and few between. Yes, there's some minor stuttering during the cut-scenes, but when compared to all-too-many other adventure/crime-mystery games, there's nothing to speak of. I give a full five stars to the QA department for ensuring that this game made it to the market without buggy qualms.

The only real drawback to the gameplay -- albeit a very minor one -- is that when one wishes to move to a different location on the map, one is required to literally travel back to the originating point of the present location in order to bring up the map on the screen. Again, this isn't really a biggie, especially since at very least we get to re-view the splendid graphics on our way back to the entry point.

Also on the plus side -- did I mention the graphics? -- are the sound effects, game durability (it's no four-hour farce), and challenge. In fact, I found the challenge to be so middle-of-the-road that I think it's as close to perfect as can be. Some games' puzzles befuddle logic and other games' puzzles are simply too simple. In "Still Life," however, I think the middle ground has been found. Like I say, this game is not for the children, but for those of us adults who happen to enjoy NOT being weighed down by too many stumpers yet enjoy several mini-games, the challenge is just right.

The game is quite linear, so if you enjoy games that insist you jump around the map to find clues and piece them together in order to make even slight progress, then this isn't for you. But if you're like me and enjoy one-step-at-a-time adventure games, then I thoroughly recommend giving it a try.

Also, one needn't suspend disbelief when playing "Still Life" (as one is required to do when playing the awesome "LJ" games). "Still Life" is quite realistic, with no aliens, mutants, psychokinesis, nor scenes from the future. Quite refreshing.

Overall, when rating "modern" adventure games (as opposed to the "Monkey Island" series), I give "Still Life" a 19 on a scale of 1 to 20. Only the two "Longest Journey" games come close to its engaging qualities. And that says a lot.

Highly recommended.

"Sicko Plot, Bad Ending and Tired Stereotypes=NOT Fun", Warning: This game involves VERY disturbing subject matter. I'm sure that this review will garner a good number of "not helpfuls" from those who are diehard fans of this sort of game. So be it.

The first game in this duet was Post Mortem, which I purchased because I like Paris, period mysteries, challenging puzzles, and great graphics. Post Mortem was a little twisted, but NOTHING like this sicko sequel.

In Still Life, the developers at Microids have pushed detailed descriptions of horrific murders to stomach churning limits. The problem is that none of the forensic details have anything to do with solving the puzzles or finding the murderer.

I finished the game only because I paid my money and took my chances. It was not FUN. The one saving grace was that the carved up bodies (and body parts) are not rendered realistically enough to REALLY make you throw up.

Gameplay was for the most part smooth on my Dell laptop, although Victoria sometimes ran or walked in place for a few seconds before continuing her gruesome work.

The level of difficulty in solving the puzzles varies. Some are challenging, some were so illogical that in spots Still Life is tiresome. The robot sequence is one of the best and most maddening puzzles. You will undoubtedly have to start over again and again as you cannot save your game in puzzle sequence. It gets easier as you memorize previous moves and progress through the robot manuever.

It was offensive to me that the only African American males (a cop and a bouncer) in the game are portrayed as foul mouthed idiots. Studies have shown that 80% of video games contain negative stereotypes of African American males. Sadly, this is what young gamers have become accustomed to--they think it's amusing.

Stereotypes aside, ADVENTURE COMPANY, if you are going to include black characters, A. CAST THEM WITH BLACK ACTORS! And, B., lose the offensive stereotypes. The Hispanic janitor was almost as bad, but at least he wasn't an expletive spewing misogynist. And, go figure, the gainfully employed men sound like thugs and the hookers sound like finishing school graduates.

And, while we're at it, if part of the story takes place in Europe, please hire actors who can at least manage a vaguely European accent! A lot of the dialogue sounds translated: there is a disconnect between the dialogue that the "Americans" speak in the game and idiomatic English.

The ending is unsatisfactory, even if you watch the credits until the end. Small frys (Microids Canada), take note. You never know when you'll get gobbled up by a bigger fish (UbiSoft) who doesn't want your inventory-- (and who can BLAME them?) Each game in a series should be able to stand on its own; don't make the mistake that Microids did and assume that a sequel is inevitable.

No matter, based on this effort from Microids I would not purchase any sequel to this game.

UGH.

"Riveting Game!", Victoria McPherson is not someone you'd want on your tail. She seems undaunted in her objective: to hunt down and put away one very sick, twisted serial killer. She's cute, witty and not afraid to confront her tyrannical boss both in attitude and a good dose of profanity.....not sure what it was about her that reminded me of my youngest sister......

Well, we need someone like her, because this killer is a sicko of mammoth proportions. The storyline was addicting as it kept me playing the game just to see what would happen next. Great game to play in the dark, if you want to be creeped out.

Enjoyed the graphics (esp. the scene outside of Pat's house), cut scenes, puzzles, musical score and, of course, Victoria.

The only suggestion would be to cut down on the cursing or replace them with something less offensive.

I look forward with great anticipation the sequel to this game...if you play it, wait for the scenes at the end of the credits!

"woke up my imagination", I really enjoyed the character and different locations. Difficulty was a four star.

"Fun gameplay, wonderful storyline", Still Life is one of the best adventure games I've played in awhile in terms of gameplay and storylines. The game is richly atmospheric, with ambient noise and beautiful backgrounds. The game designers seemed to have embraced their Mature rating with graphic violence and plenty of profanity, which in my opinion adds something to the game.

I found myself getting very involved with this game, to the point where I dreaded entering scenes where I knew something upsetting to the character would happen. The linkage of Gus and Victoria's was very well-done, though it would have been nice to see a bit more of Gus. There were definite improvements in gameplay over Post Mortem, especially the run function and the ability to skip lines of dialouge. I did find the inventory system a bit frustrating, as you often cannot pick up an item until the character knows he or she needs it (even if you as a player know that a knife has GOT to be useful at some point down the road!) These are minor annoyances in a largely entertaining gameplay environment.

Many people have commented on the puzzles; many are typical to the adventure game genre, some are refreshingly creative, and one will have you pulling your hair out and searching the internet for a savegame to get around it.

As everyone else has commented, the ending is disappointment, especially given the fact that Microids no longer exists. If a sequel were indeed planned, though, the ending would serve as a very good cliffhanger for the next. One can only hope that Ubisoft will decide to make that sequel and answer all our questions.
