"Print quality good, but paper feed/jamming issues"
I've had one of these on my secretary's desk for less than two years. Initially it worked fine. Good print quality for text, which is 99% of what we print. About six months later, my secretary started getting paper jams. They became more frequent over time. Last week, the machine stopped feeding paper, both from the paper tray and the one-sheet-at-a-time slot. What would happen is that the paper feed mechanism would start and then abruptly stop before the sheet of paper was fully loaded. I have been unable to fix it, and am about to trash the unit.

Granted, the purchase price for this printer is very low ($50-60; ditto for the model that replaced it), and the print quality is good. I would recommend it only for low-volume printing.

By the way, Brother Cust. Service was of little help re the "does not feed" issue; they ultimately told my secretary to take the printer to a repair shop. Sure. It would cost me more for a repair estimate than it would cost to buy a brand new unit.

Some machines are designed and built in such a way as to be bullet-proof. They work well out of the box and continue working well for many years with little or no maintenance, e.g., HP4, IBM Selectric (okay, I'm dating myself), most Toyotas, etc. The HL-2040 is the exact opposite. It is not a durable machine and is destined for an early trip to the recycler/landfill.

"Semi Dispossable Printer"
This is the second 2040 I've had, 1st one lasted about a year (paid $150 for it) before the drum went. Drum costs more than printer at local stores. Bought a new one for $100 (new drum, new catridge), again it's lasted just over a year and the drum light is on again. So I'm shopping again. Money wise I got my money's worth and it worked fine all year. Environment wise I don't like dumping these in the landfill because they can't make a drum that'll last longer than a year, or at least provide a cost effective replacement.

"How to fix if paper feed brakes"
This is how I "fixed it" if the paper feed stops working,
first, see if the manual feed still works,
if it does, then this simple solution is probably the answer.

you need to take off the left side panel, the one under the go button and lights.
once the side panel is off, in the very front you will see a black gear wheel. Part of the gear wheel has no spikes in it, it's not supposed to.
there is a spring, running from a nob on the gear wheal to the printer frame.
The defect is, the spring is too weak and over time fail. All I did was make a tighter fit with the spring by stretching out the end, which I know is not an ideal solution because over time this will stretch out the spring. But a spring doesn't cost much to replace on your own, and now my printer which has been broken for 8 months works again.

The paper curls
feed is not perfect
lousy printer
good for me, because I need to do a lot of printing where quality is not an issue, no a laser printer saves me money.

"GREAT Printer for Price and Size"
I have had this printer for about 3 months now. I don't print with it everyday but I print many items over the weekends. I use the printer feed, 75% of the time, to print out shipping labels. I find this printer to be superb! It is compact enough, fits on a shelf in my closet, light enough to move back and forth to my desk. It prints incredibly fast and crisp for my purposes. I have not had any issues with jamming yet. I recommend it for fast and simple printer needs.

"great printer"
i friggin love this printer. It does both one- and two-sided printing well, quickly. I just go brush my teeth and 30 pages are finished printing by the time i get back. it has never stuck...never. I couldnt ask for a better printer, really. unless it has a built in fax machine and copier lol

"printer review", These are the best... prints forever without buying more ink... no selecting no color.. much easier to me... I have 2 of these... the best!!!

"Works flawlessly", Had it for a good two years. The only time it malfunctions, it's been my fault(when I reuse paper to print on the reverse and forget to take off a staple or scotch tape holding two sheets together). It's also rather forgiving when using paper other than the recommended brand/weight. Sure the toner cartridge is expensive compared to the cost of the machine, but you have internet sellers who ask little more than half the regular street price (say $35 vs. $60). I'm speaking as a home user - the oftmentioned curling problem doesn't bother me, but I can see the problem in an office environment.

"Great printer", This is a great little printer. We had 2 in the office already, and when we needed another I ordered this refurbished unit. They are very cost effective and easy to use.

I highly recommend this.

"Handles heavy load and prints great, clean resumes", I have had this printer for over a year now and have, but for one thing, been greatly satisfied. The other day I printed out a 124 page report and it printed fast, without a hitch. When I was looking for a car, I printed reams of dealer information sheets; even with graphics, the images were great.

I print a lot of resumes and they come out sharp and clean. The one thing is that it prints envelopes and curls them around the roller which creases them badly. That ruins the looks of your envelope and when it contains a resume or a thank you letter, it better look good. My old HP printer had a little switch you flipped to have envelopes come straight out the back. I didn't think of checking this before I bought it. I assumed all printers did that straight print with envelopes.

It prints different sized paper, executive, from the paper tray without problems. Overall, I'm extremely happy with this printer.

"Too much "toner life end" -Brother's quality is getrting worse.", My company bought 5 HL2040s for different depts 6 months ago. Recent 3 of them got the same problem- " toner life end" even replace several brand new genuine toners. My company now is planing to buy a color laser jet to print catalog but no one recomand to buy Brother's product- cheap price cheap quality and it wastes too much time if we want to fix it by warranty. No more "Brother".

"Good for One-Sided Printing Only", I've had this printer for about a year now. It's dependable, compact, and text looks good. However, if you intend to, say, print odd pages and then turn the stack over and print even pages in order to achieve printing on both sides, do not use this printer. Every time I've tried this with more than just a few sheets, the printer will, sometime during the printing job pick up two sheets of paper, causing everything printed after to be in the wrong place. For example, when the printer should pick up the page with 7 on the other side and now print page 8 on the back, it picks up 2 pages, leaving the back of page 7 blank and printing page 8 on the back of page 9. This will happen several times so that by the end of a 30 page document, you might have page 24 printed on the back of page 29, and pages 26, 28, and 30 printed on blank pages at the end (since there are three blank pages along the way where the printer picked up two pages several times.
Once again-good for single-sided B&W printing. Anything else is a nuisance.

"Alright for price but better options are out there", I've had this Brother monochrome laser printer for maybe a year now and bought it when it was about $110.

The good:
-Crisp black and white text, far better than virtually any inkjet and less expensive per page
-Can hold at least 200 pages of normal paper

The bad:
-Printer has a jamming tendency. The only reason that this does not render the printer unacceptable is that the "jam" happens within the paper tray and before the page gets all caught up in the rollers, so it is fairly easy to clear but a nuisance.
-Noise. It's not a noise that is any better or worse than any other mechanical sound, but it is very loud, almost like a vacuum cleaner.
-Confusing toner/drum ink assembly could add up in cost. Now, I am sure that for some people, it is perfectly obvious what all these parts are, but I am - and I think most other people are in home office laser printers - used to a single disposable module. The "drum" assembly costs virtually as much as the printer itself. All and all, this is indeed a laser printer that prints excellent quality text. However, it is quite clear that modern improvements to small laser printers have not really been put to work here, perhaps in an effort to save costs.

Ultimately, I'd either spend maybe $50-75 more and get something that is reliable and straightforward. Usually HP's lower end printers are of great quality for the price. I have had a bad experience with a Lexmark inkjet but I have used their laser b&w printers and they are quite good.

"Reverse printing on thin paper is a problem", The price is right, and for single-sided printing, it is a great deal. The problem is with flipping pages to print them on the reverse side. Unless you are using heavy paper (22-24 lb) it is very common for the printer to feed 2, 3, or even 4 sheets of 20lb paper stuck together. My last Brother did not have kind of this problem. Paper curl is also oiut of control. Would be nice to have the exit door on the back to feed sheets through straight, like earlier models had.

"Good product", Great product for the price. The only problem I have is, it makes my lights blink. Someone told me it's the frequency it sends out.

"Light, Speedy, Fast and Cheap. But Noisy...", I got this last year from Office Depot, with promotional rebate and such, for a total of $60 - can't beat the price! I have it connected to an airport express (mac network) for wireless printing.

Because it doesn't have 'bonjour' (its a mac wireless thing, 'bonjour' hardware literally announce themselves by greeting a wireless network, hence 'bonjour') built in, you cannot print to it totally wirelessly. You need to connect it physically to some hardware of your wireless network.

For more flexibility, it has both USB and parallel printer ports. I connected the USB to a hub, the hub to the airport express for wireless printing. But for the non-wireless laptops (Mac and PC) I have an LPT to USB cable connected on the parallel port and I can physically connect to the wireless-challenged laptops through USB. The conversion cable (LPT to USB) not needed for anything mac, b/c its not used by macs. But PCs still come with parallel printer plugs.

Cons: NOISY. I mean it. This little thing makes a vortex-like noise as soon as it gets plugged in (auto turn on/off) and stays noisy until way after it has finished printing. It was quite disconcerting at first, but I got used to it.

Can't beat the blazin' speed, the minimal footprint, the light weight and the low price.

Now, if only all of the above came with color...
