"Don't bother unless you feel lucky..."
On 07-04-2008 I purchased the D-Link DGL-4100 GamerLounge Gigabit Router in order to upgrade our SOHO network to Gigabit speed and because we don't need wireless capability. From reading other reviews I had hoped this was a good choice. No such luck. But you get what you pay for - in this case it wasn't much.
Essentially Dead On Arrival, or more accurately non-functional it would constantly reboot itself (as some others have experienced.) I was never even able to get past logging in or attempt to update its firmware before it would reset - lots of blue light blinking. D-Link customer support had me spend 20+ minutes powering down, resetting, rinse, repeat, and then finally said "its defective, send back." So I did. I will not consider buying any D-Link products in the future. I would have rated it 0 stars if it was possible.

Amazon was great as far as making the return painless and at no cost me.

I ended up buying a commercial grade NETGEAR FVS336G ProSafe 4 Port Gigabit Firewall Router for about 3x the cost and have been reasonably happy with it. Netgear FVS336G ProSafe Dual WAN GigaBit SSL VPN Firewall
It does not have as many available keyword blocking entries as I would like, only 32, and its logging it a bit limited, but otherwise it works perfectly and has a metal case with a built-in power supply - one less wallwart - and a Lifetime Warranty.

If you're willing to risk wasting a couple of hours only to find you have to send it back, then get the D-Link DGL-4100. Otherwise you might want to look for a commercial grade product instead of a consumer based one.



"Great router!"
Had a linksys before which was decent, but not quite up to speed. I have 2 xbox 360's and two computers and had occasional trouble with lag issues online with my 360(especially when playing Ultimate Mortal Kombat). Used port forwarding and all other tricks and it helped alot but it didn't cure the problem. This is a gaming router and it lets you prioritize your different ports which so far has had amazing results! I have had no lag issues online since I got it. It was a little tricky to set up compared to the linksys, but well worth the effort. Buy this router.

I have tried many routers and this is by far the best I have tried. Excellent web interface and tons of configuration tools.

"Perfect for Gamers and VOIP"
After Comcast updated speeds in the summer of 2008 My Linksys routers and Vonage devices were failing.

I purchased this and was a quick fix my upload speed is much faster. I monitored the speeds using several websites and my Vonage was working better then ever so far no more under water sounds or robot voices from using my VOIP

I did have to change my sling box settings but that happens when you change routers.

The only complaint I have is the blue bright lights are like lasers at night.
I have to cover them with black tape.

"Pretty good router, so far"
I got this router as an upgrade from a Microsoft MN-100 router. Basically the MN-100 was just too slow. Networking between our four home computers was too slow. And worst of all, downloading from peer to peer networks invariably caused the MN-100 to crash.

Some people gave this DGL-4100 router negative reviews. I guess it all depends on what perspective you are coming from. For me, this router has proved to be everything I hoped it would be.

The peer to peer downloading has improved tremendously. No more router crashes. The download speeds are now up to some 280 kb/s with uploads about one-tenth of that (my DSL connection isn't that fast, as you can see).

I plugged in my existing Speedstream 5100 which I had gotten five years ago from my DSL provider and it worked fine. I'm not sure what the other reviewer's problem was with his Speedstream 5100 DSL modem. You do need to know what your DSL settings are. But, it's not that hard to set up a standard PPOE DSL connection - you just need to plug in your userid and password.

I was also looking for some way to control the internet usage from the various family computers, and this router has an excellent set of Access Control tools which allow you set up any number of blocking schedules so that Internet access from certain computers on the network can be blocked for certain periods of time. The MN-100 had this feature also, but for some reason, it did not work reliably for one of the computers.

There are also more sophisticated filters such as a web filter, inbound filter, and other filters that that I have not had a chance to explore. You can set the web filter so that it only lets through a certain list of websites that you enter in manually.

One complaint that a few reviewers have lodged is that this gigabit router does not do jumbo packets. If you are a connoiseur of gigabit routers/switches, the ability to do jumbo packets does speed up the network traffic even more, but considering that I was coming from a 100T router, this one does network transfers so much faster that I'm not complaining.

More recently, I expanded the number of ports available on this DGL-4100 by attaching a D-Link DGS-2205 5-port switch. This router automatically detects the devices plugged into the 5-port switch and assigns router addresses as if the ports on the switch were part of the original router. You don't have to input anything, just plug things together and it all works automatically.

Overall, an excellent upgrade from my first ever 100T router. If you are looking for something even more sophisticated, there may be some nits to pick, but then you'll have to pay much more to get something with more professional quality.
