"Running Pre-N with Vista. I did it!"
Just Got the Pre-N Card and Router. It works great with all my XP computers but I have removable hard drives. One with XP and One with Vista. Called Belkin and they told me they could not help it was not compatible and that is all there is to it. When I put the intall disk in
with Vista it would not run at all. So I hit start and went to my computer and saw the Belkin set up disk in the CD-Rom drive. I right clicked on the set up disk and hit open and saw the set up Icon and then I right clicked on it and opened properties and then opened compatibility menue and ran it in XP compataiblity mode and hit apply and then downloaded the driver and it works perfect. Pre-N works great and now that I have it running on Vista I am elated. I hope this help someone out there with the same problem.

"It even works for me in Vista!!"
It isn't supposed to work with Vista - but it does for me. I've got 5 bars and the internet's quick. I've looked online to find out how to get this to work on Vista but I couldn't find anything. I was about to install XP - but decided to try. I'm writing this from my desktop that is connected to the internet through the Belkin Pre-N card (F5D8000). This is what I did in case you want to try:

1. Run setup.exe on CD
2. Shutdown and install card
3. Startup and leave the CD in the drive
4. Vista tries to auto-install the drivers. Vista then tells you to put your CD in with the drivers. Press Ok.
5. The belkin utility won't open - but go to Network/Sharing center > Manage Wireless Networks > Add > Add a Network that is in the range of this Computer.

I don't know if this will work for everyone else - but it worked for me. If you have any questions let me know!

"Still no Vista support?"
I can not believe that almost a year later and still no Vista support. On their support site it still just says Coming Soon! What a joke and a waste of time and money.

I have the Pre-N router and am happy with that, and had hoped to get the maximum performance out of it by using the network card made to use with the router. Boy, am I dissapointed.

"Fed up with Bait and Switch"
Even though this network card works amazingly well when everything is configured properly and it's a great bargain, Belkin is doing everything within its power to make you buy the N card and router instead. The day the Belkin N router was introduced at my local Staples and Bestbuy stores last year, the Pre-N cards and router mysteriously disappeared from the shelves and no one could explain why. Now Vista has been out for months, yet Belkin is still unable/unwilling to deliver Vista compatible drivers for most of the older Pre-N cards. All you get is a "coming soon" note on their web site with the implied message that they hope you run out of patience with your old, useless Pre-N network card and upgrade to N.

"Not Vista Compatible"
I was disappointed to learn this card won't work with Windows Vista. I bought the router + card together in hopes of getting broader coverage even though it isn't fully standards-compliant ("Pre-N"). I contacted support about the issue and they sent me instructions that didn't work out. Might be a good product for WindowsXP, but for my purposes I rate it 1 star.

What our customer's say!

"Speed Vs. Reliability...", Pros: Takes advantage of Belin's Pre-N Speeds to a point

Cons: HIGH rate of lost connections; can be a bear to setup even for experts
Summary: Short and sweet: I've had this product for well over two years, having bought it along with my Belkin Pre-N router. The stories about the increased range and higher-than-G transfer speeds are true, though I'd take the numbers with a grain of salt.

I had networking experts in local industry and from my embassy (I'm an overseas expat) attempt to help me with the initial setup, and this card couldn't find the router for two weeks, which eventually turned out to be a quirk in how the Belkin Pre-N and XP interact to allow WPA security. I won't bore you with details, but suffice to say that setup may not be as standard as you think, noob issues notwithstanding.

Over a year later, my biggest gripe is that after periods of inactivity, the connection to the router is intact, but my HTTP connection is not. This is not an issue for laptops or other wired devices on my network, which maintain rock solid connections with both the router and the internet regardless of time connected, idle or otherwise. I have tried with and without other devices attached to the network and have also assigned static IP addresses to each device, all to no avail. Driver issues don't seem to enter into this either, and Belkin's tech support is flummoxed. That this occurs with the card specifically designed to take advantage of the Pre-N router is an unredeemable ding in its rating as far as I'm concerned.

If you can put up with this annoying shortcoming involving constant software reboots of the router and occasional computer/router hard reboots, the connection is good and the range is great. It's also very forgiving of physical obstacles, I find.

"Belkin Pre-N 170262 rounter", Router has worked great for years until Vista where I've discovered the problem with uploading a large number of jpeg files to Kodak's ofoto. Router locks up and I have to reboot or unplug it. I think I'll re-install XP, Vista seems to be a dog in many ways.

"Not Vista compatible - Beware!", 3 months after returning this card and the manufacturer advising they would have Amazon update the site, I still don't see a warning that this is a card not compatible with Vista. Perhaps they have published new drivers to handle Vista - but CHECK THEIR WEB SITE BEFORE YOU BUY.

"Best Available?", I've had one of these Network Cards for about three years, paired with a Belkin pre-N router. It has been reliable and fast in my small home network. When the signal is occasionally lost, it is easily re-established in software and hard rebooting is rarely required. It is my understanding that the Belkin pre-N equipment works better than any N equipment, so I am pleased to find that pre-N components are still available. You won't be sorry if you go the Belkin pre-N route also.

"Lousy service", Item failed to perform. No help from Belkin. Contacted Amazon about return and was informed I had to deal with Computer Brain who informed me I had to pay return freight plus 15% restocking fee for an item that was faulty. Never buy from Amazon again

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Performs as respresented", I use with Belkin F5D8230-4 Wireless 802.11x Pre-N Router.

Fast with excellent range.

Easy installation if instructions are carefully followed.

"Awesome", The wireless Belkin network card was easy to install and works great. No more lag with online games!

"Great range and speed", Bought the pre-n to replace a malfunctioning 802-11b system. I am very impressed with the speed and range. Well worth the price!

"Wireless Connection", Finally able to connect the basement computer with the router on the second floor. Failed repeaters and other type routers and cards were the norm.

"Outstanding Range!", I did my research before purchasing this wireless card from Amazon to use in conjunction with my Belkin Pre-N wireless router. According to every net review I'd read, this combination of Belkin Pre-N desktop card and router had the best range and throughput at that range than any other card/router in its class, and as my workstation is out in the middle of a farm an almost impossible distance from the router, 'range' is what I needed above all.

After some configuration and finding the best spot to put the computer itself, I now regularly have connection qualities in the 77-90% range a good 200-300 ft. from my router which is in another building entirely (and both have a lot of metal cladding and what-not I had expected to cause a great deal of interference if not outright unworkability.)

The odd thing about this 'Pre-N' combination from Belkin is that apparently the later Belkin N equipment is grossly inferior, and manages to pull off only about half the range of this model.

These cards and the Pre-N router are becoming harder to find as they've been superseded by the newer (inferior) models currently in the stores, so if you have to operate wireless at great distances, I doubt you'll beat these Belkin models for at least the immediate future.
