"A WONDROUS PRESENTATION OF TOLKIEN'S MASTERPIECE"
If you've only seen the theatrical version of these films you've missed a great deal. Usually the 'extended editions' of films are disappointing, or unnecessary. That is not the case here. In fact the additional two plus hours ( for the three films ) makes the story much more cohesive.

For the Penelope Purehearts out there that can't stand the fact that the Elflord Glorfindel was trashed to give Arwen ( Liv Tyler's ) character more screen time, and thus flesh out her's, and Aragorn's ( Viggo Mortensen's ) romance, or the fact that Tom Bombadil, and Goldberry are altogether missing- all I can say is 'boo-hoo!' I've read the book, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, at least twenty times since the 70's ( when 'Frodo Lives' was appearing on the walls of subways, and viaducts all over the country ), and I was actually thrilled that Peter Jackson did not spend an hour on Bilbo's birthday party in order to be true to the only tedious portion of Tolkien's masterwork.

This is the greatest trilogy in the history of film, and the extended edition makes a splendid theatrical version into something approaching perfection.

"more that five stars"
I like this movie and the book. very good presentation, but I have something to say, the first movie, doesn't have subtitles in Spanish, the other two have had subtitles...

"Make this special extended edition trilogy, your own "precious"!"
This is another of my retro reviews on products that have been out for awhile but I have never written on.I am happy to be writing this one as, so far as DVD box sets go, there are very few past and present that can come up to the standards set by this special platinum series extended edition of the Lord of The Rings Trilogy of movies.
The discs themselves sit in trays in a fold out folder, that extend two folds per side. Each movie has four discs to each pack. The first two discs are for the movies themselves and the second two are for the special features. There are hours upon hours of special features in these packs, many of which are new.You learn everything from the smallest detail from the production of the movie,to the special effects to interviews with cast and crew.Just a phenomenol range of information.
The first film "Fellowship of the Ring" contains 30 extra minutes of footage to extend it to a running time of roughly 208 minutes. The second film"The Two Towers" contains 43 minutes of extra footage which extends its' running time to about 223 minutes. And the third film"Return of the King" has an extra 50 minutes worth of footage which extends its' run to about 250 minutes.
It is easy at first glance to think that the extra time/footage is just culled from deleted scenes and/or other extraneous footage left out in the original theatrical versions.Director Jacksons' approach,so we are told, was to reconstruct the films as if there was no original version and without time constraints. The end result are these wonderful films. It might also be tempting to think that extra footage will equal extra boring.Surprisingly but happily I must say such is not the case and in fact had there been more footage I would have been glad of it.It is a credit to director Jackson and crew that reassembled these new versions that they never strayed from Tolkiens' books and/or their own original thrusts from the first pictures, but instead expanded and fleshed out many back stories, characters, plots and sub plots that take these films to a whole new level. The extra footage and the fleshing out they give us along with the ingenious re-editing here and there of scenes is a plus and NEVER a minus throughout all of the new versions.Along with the new footage comes a new orchestral score and both are integrated seamlessly throughout.
In conclusion I cannot recommend this set enough to all lovers of Tolkien, fantasy and for all of the fans of these films. Each extended film takes itself and the entire series to an entirely new level of creativity from Peter Jackson and his crew and to a higher and better level of understanding for us,the audience. Therefore the impact of each film is just that much greater and more rewarding.A magnificient achievement off screen and off and a credit and standard for good filmmaking everywhere.

"DVD arrived scratched, and item has been discontinued"
I was really excited to get this, and the second disc in the first movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, was unplayable. AND, suddenly the manufacturer has discontinued the item. I wonder why? I'm so bummed!

"The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)"
The Platinum Series deserves 5+ stars. Mr. Jackson's only major cinematic losses in filming Tolkien's TLOTR treasures, was the loss of the "Tom Bombadil" and "The Scouring of the Shire" segments. If you're willing to set those aside, this extended version brings the story lines very much to life, conveying the depth of character and values present on the printed page. Unfortunately, that wasn't nearly accomplished in the original theatrical releases. I've read and re-read the entire set, including "The Hobbit", several times since my first read at the age of about 16-17. I only saw the first two releases in theater, and was so very disappointed that I did not go to see "The Return of the King". If you love the Trilogy in print, this is THE version, the ONLY version, to purchase. It's the finest cinematic masterpiece ever created.

"Worth the purchase", I was leary about purchasing another set of LOTR DVDs but hoped the added scenes would be worth the cost. I was not disappointed. I watched all 3 the day after Christmas. The additional scenes really enhanced and smoothed the flow of the story. I've read all the novels 3 times - once when the animated "Hobbit" came out, the second about 5 years later, and the third time after Fellowship hit the big screen, so it is a journey I love to go on. I never liked the way Aragorn and Eowyn's relationship was in the original release. Too jerky and all of a sudden she appears hooked up with Faramir at the end. Eowyn's warrior princess role in the extended version is much more satisfying and explains the Faramir piece. Another awkward scene was after the Ents' victory, Merry and Pippen were enjoying a smoke and the salted pork. The extended version sets up that scene and gives it context. The battle scenes are also even better in the extended version. I'm not only going to watch all 3 back to back again (soon!), but I think it's time to read them all once more.

"Happy with the product and shipping", The only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because in the picture it showes the movies in a case. All three were individual cases. They do not come in one box. The DVD's themselves were in great condition and all three were extended editions so the person I bought it for was very happy to receive them as a gift. They came in good timing as well.

"Lords of the Rings - triolgy CD pack. platunum edition", I purchased this for as a Christmas gift for my daugther. She was very happy withe the 12 CD's and all the maps/info. that came with it. I was very satiffied with the contens as well as the quality of the CD's and the printed materials, Anazon's delivery and packaging.

"Extended Edition is a must", The extended edition of LOTR is a must. The original movies seemed to lack justification for some of the actions that took place. The extended edition provides it.

Maybe one day there will be a Re-extended Edition. I am sure there is more film that could be put it. LOTR is a complex story with many complex characters. I would love to see it enriched even more. But, until there is a Re-extended Edition, you need the Extended Edition.

"The best got even better", For anyone who is a fan of the "Ring" books as well as the movies, this is a delight. Some of the additional scenes filled-in parts of the story-line that readers of the books knew were relevant, making the movie more complete. Loved it all!

"Excellent", item was like new and in perfect condition. Seller sent very fast and recieved quickly. Would prefer to do business with seller.

"The Ultimate LOTR video collection", I had seen the extended versions of LOTR while visiting my brother and his wife last year. After which I just had to have the collection for myself. This collection not only contains extended scenes but also entire scenes not included in the theatrical versions. The DVD extras contain hours and hours on the background of the movies as well as how the movies were produced and shot. This is a must have collection for anyone that loves the LOTR trilogy.

"Son was thrilled", I bought this for a gift for my son and he was thrilled. He's watched it at least 100 times :) The box is so nice and the colors match my decor I have it in my entertainment center for decoration. That might sound funny to most...lol...but I have a place for everything and I can't stand dvds piled up in the entertainment center. I have nice cupboards and racks for them. But this looks real nice in there :)

"This is not Tolkien", I love Tolkien and I love the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion. When I first read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings it completely changed my world. Everything was perfect about it. The book had an excellent narrative style, deep characterization, and an incredible amount of work and detail put into (Tolkien invented something like 14 languages relating to Middle-Earth).

The movies do not at all reflect the same feel, narrative style or characterizations as the book. Much of it feels like a sloppy summary, with memorable quotes from the book emitted in favor of new dialog that conforms with Hollywood's childish pretensions. There are countless, pointless omissions and deviations, usually only for the sake of cheap laughs and pointless violence. The Weathertop scene is a perfect example of this. In the book Frodo is stabbed because he charges at the Witch King, and Aragorn chases them away with fire. In the movie due to Merry and Pippin's *HILARIOUS* stupidity the Ringwraiths are attracted to the fire (even though Aragorn advised them to start it in the book) and stab Frodo because he curls into a fetal position to hide. Aragorn charges in with a noticeably not broken sword and a torch that he hurls across the screen into the Witch King's face.

Peter Jackson does not know how to properly build suspense and show character development, because even in some of the earliest scenes Frodo is desperately struggling against the influence of the ring. In the book Frodo doesn't have this relationship with it until the very end, but Jackson shows him struggling against it when they're hiding under the tree roots (In the book they hide in tall grass, Ralph Bakshi changed it to tree roots in the 1978 animated movie which Jackson borrows HEAVILY from). This renders almost every scene with Frodo and the ring repetitive and unnecessary. No suspense or development is built up, it's just the same shot over and over again.

Much of the mystery is left out of Jackson's view of Middle-Earth. Most of it gets lost in useless extended action sequences that are clearly intended to distract the audience from the otherwise repetitive cinematography. Characters that were rendered with dignity and depth in the books are turned into annoying comic relief (Gimli, Merry and Pippin). One quickly grows tired of the rivalry between Gimli and Legolas. I GET IT ELVES AND DWARVES DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. Merry and Pippin are portrayed as painfully stupid, and their scenes are more reminiscent of 'Dumb and Dumber' than anything that Tolkien ever wrote.

Jackson is just not a very good director. The movies did have impressive special effects and good costumes, but the screenplay was terrible. You're better off buying the Animated Trilogy (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King) because it's cheaper, follows closer to the book, and is (often times) less infuriating to the people who grew up reading the books. If you like shallow characters, cheap action, unnecessary CGI, childish humor, and not particularly memorable cinematography then I suppose this is a movie for you, but that sums up so many movies today that I'm sure you'll like any one of them.

"The Best Film Ever made", The Lord of the Rings (the whole series) is the BEST FILM ever made. The Lord of the Rings is more than simply a film it is ART. Elijah Wood's acting in the film is the best I've ever seen, not to mention the outstanding performance from Sean Astin and the rest of the cast. The movie won every Oscar it was nominated for. It's a crying shame that the actors were not nominated for Oscars, I feel that if Elijah Wood is not worthy of an Oscar that they should stop giving them out.
