Others say...
"Interface and Software are a great package" I wasn't aware when I purchased this that the audio interface came bundled with audio editing software. This I must say is what makes the product. The audio interface is great considering it is the first one I have ever used. Nevertheless, haven't had any problems with it. I also purchased Sony's Acid Music Studio editing software and I don't even use it because I like the friendly user interface on the M-Audio's Software.
"Not bad for the price." I am using this with a Pentium 1.7 GHz PC with Windows XP and SP-2. It installed easy enough, grabbed the latest drivers off the M-Audio website. Have to agree with others in that the documentation is not the greatest. Once I figured out to use an RCA to phono converter and plug it into the sound card then select the Fast Track as default playback and Sound recording device I was in business. Added bonus is that I can play along with the songs I want to record from I-Tunes and make sure I have the parts right. Get a decent set of headphones and plug them into the unit, makes a big difference with the sound quality. I really like the Session software; the last time I did any recording I had a Teac 4 track reel to reel and an 8 channel mixer, so this is definitely a step up for me. May not sound completely professional, but what do you want for the price.
"For consumer grade item, not bad at all..." I've been using this for a while now under both Mac and Windows. Setup on the Mac was dead simple, but I never did figure out how to manually set the latency in OSX. The latency in GarageBand can get a little rough when you add some effects, but that's likely more to do with my processor (a G4 PowerBook) than the interface. But overall I don't even remember setting it up on my laptop, which is probably a good sign.
On Windows I didn't have too many problems once I got the Vista drivers. I've been using CakeWalk Music Maker 4, and once you get the right audio setting in the application (which can be a bit of a pain, but again not M-Audio's fault) you're set. Though I will say that disconnecting the USB cord while the sound card is busy is the one time I've managed a blue screen in Vista! But that's not entirely unreasonable. As far as latency goes, I've got a fast enough processor that if I set the latency on the Fast Track to the minimum (this can be set through the control panel in Windows) I get no perceivable latency. Oh, and if you're not using the ASIO drivers, that's probably part of your problem.
I've been using the 1/4" jack with little problem...I have to up the input levels in my application (which is a pain in GarageBand, easier in Cakewalk) but as long as I stay away from the monitor and fluorescent lights I don't really get any considerable noise. I may try the XLR route anyway, though.
This is a perfectly serviceable item for somebody just looking to do some casual recording on the PC, or in place of an amp when traveling (also allows for a wide array of amp/effect combinations without buying hardware). If you're looking to do anything even semi-serious (such as recording multiple instruments, or record actual tracks with a band) you might want to spend a little more. But for "personal" use thing thing's great...better than anything else I've seen or sampled in the same price range.
Also I've noticed that a large number of the negative reviews seem to have more to do with setup problems (or incompatibility problems) than the actual quality of the product. Like I said, I don't even remember setting it up on a Mac and on Windows (Vista) it was relatively simple. Provided you're moderately competent with computers you should have little trouble.
"no session given" i haven't opened the box because they haven't even sent me the session software package.this is not what i ordered. i am waiting to hear from them , hoping i will get what i ordered.
"Vista Users Beware!" I purchased this item today from Best Buy and was not sure if it would be compatible with Vista (it says min reqs are Win XP SP1) but after conversing with the Geeksquad guys, they said there was a driver download for Vista on the website. So I splurged and got it. Boy was I wrong. I got home excited to try out my new toy. I started to install all the drivers and software, only to have it take quite some time. The install programs drained my RAM to 0 (which I have yet to do with any program on this computer) and took a long time. I finally got everything installed or so it seemed. I then opened Session only to have it crash and go unresponsive. I probably restarted/logged off at least 8 times because the I couldn't even end the process. After playing with compatibility options I got it to stay open for a while and I played around with the loops. When i tried to export the file it froze again. (Note: All other programs run fine on my computer. Photoshop CS3, Sony Soundforge, etc.) I never could get anything through the input (mic or guitar). And the output sound from the card was terrible. Very scratchy and of poor quality.
The downlow is: If you have XP this is a good buy. My friend has it and I love the program and have played with it at his house. Vista users beware.

What our customer's say!
"BETTER THAN THE MBOX2!!!!", I been doing music since i was a kid so i been to many home and professional studios and if your on a budget this is for you!!!! I'm not fond of the mbox and the price difference is amazing. Now you can get the maudio protools and this fast track cheaper than the mbox. Only problem i ever had is like the mbox you record in mono not stereo. Sound quality is near perfect and installing is the easiest i ever had basicaly plug and play. So home studio beginners get this and it will blow your mind!!!
"easy to get started. great value", This was my first attempt at recording via my computer. It was easy to install on windows xp media edition and I was recording in minutes! I can't imagine a better value for all the features you get.
"Great Toy", This is just a great fun tool. It only gets 4 stars because you have to spend some time figuring out how to use it.
I bought it for my son who is studying electronic music at universtiy and he has had a blast with it. So for those of you who want to lay down some tracks with lots of different sounds this is for you. While you can use it just for fun it can also be used as a work tool, especially if you are on the road.
"Vista Users Be Warned", If you use Windows Vista or plan on switching to Vista, your M-Audio equipment isn't going to work the way it did in XP.
M-Audio has a Vista driver for the Fast Track USB but it doesn't always work. I downloaded the driver from M-Audio's support page and installed it as instructed. Within minutes I was up and running. Everything seemed to be working fine at first. I had Ableton Live 7 and Reason 4.0 running. After a few hours of working, I started to get distorted popping sounds. It happened as I was recording guitar and also during playback. I saved all of my work, closed the programs and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the Fast Track. When I played back the track I was working on earlier, the popping sounds were gone so I assumed everything was fixed. However, when I tried to work on music later that week, the distorted popping sounds were back.
I was thinking about upgrading to the M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile but a friend of mine who owns one, and also runs Vista, encountered the same sound issue I did with the Fast Track USB. As of today, M-Audio only has a beta-driver for Fast Track Pro Mobile. The driver for the Fast Track USB is not a beta and still has issues. I had a sound issue with an M-Audio USB Uno as well (which I also wrote a review for). Personally, I will not purchase anymore M-Audio products due to their poor Vista drivers.
"Problems fixed", I think a lot of the problems reported in these reviews have been fixed. I am running a PC with Vista and installation of Session software was simple and fairly quick (less than 15 minutes). No compatibility issues. I'm getting a pretty decent sound plugging my guitar directly into the fast track. I've previously used Cakewalk and for simple recording and mixing, the Session software is comparable. It's a good product for the money for someone who just wants to play around and experiment, and makes good (not great) recordings. I don't think you can expect professional quality recording for $100.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Does just what it says", This little gizmo does what it says it will and does it very well. Be advised if you are running this in XP without SP2 (I am) none of the drivers and extras will work, but the unit still will do the job. Unbeatable for the price (I've looked).
"Excellent Audio Interface", Excellent audio interface to a PC for a single musician who wants to get his/her ideas down and wants to be able to play with layering tracks on the Session software. Works well for me since I am a guitarist!
"Software is for Windows only . . .", First, let me say that Fasttrack works perfectly for my needs -- i needed to get a mic signal through an XLR cable into my mac powerbook for demos, absent of my usual protools software and clunky hardware. the mac sees the fasttrack immediately. BUT you should also know that none of the bundled software works with the laptop.
and considering this is an input box AND software you and i are paying for -- if you're on a mac you should go elsewhere to buy the box alone instead of this package. i saw 2 new units at the amazon "new and used" link at the top of this page (sans sessions software) for a much lower price.
Not exactly fair dealing from M-Audio as they flat-out name Garage Band in their product description and then talk about how great the accompanying software is--for that reason alone this package only gets 2 stars from this mac/protools user.
"Great for the Price", I use this with n-Track Studio and, yes, I had to fiddle with some settings to get it working. But once I did that, I was very happy with what I was able to accomplish. I don't plug my electric directly into the box because I prefer the tone I get through my amp so I mic it and run it through the unit. That's the one thing I severely dislike about this device: the mic preamp is HORRIBLE. Of course, even a semi-decent preamp will cost you close to $100 alone, so you can't expect one on this thing. That's probably why some reviewers have had problems with the mic gain. The thing is, even if you get the gain correct, you will be extremely disappointed in the quality. But if you have a good preamp (which you should get for serious recording no matter what other hardware you use), then it will sound much better.
Since I don't plug directly in, I haven't used much of the software that comes with it. I tried the sequencing program, and it's nice but FAR too limited to be of any real use.
"Works Great - but requires fiddling with the settings", I read several reviews of this product before buying it - so I knew what I was getting into. It seemed like the mix of comments were either the product was really good or really horrible. The horrible comments seemed to center around difficulty with the setttings. Hopefully what I write here will help someone else get it up and running b/c I think it really is a nice product for the $.
This product works great with my MacBook using garageband. It sounds really good too and the price is definitely right. That's the good news. The bad news is that it does take some time to fiddle with the settings to get working. Once you know what to do though, it's a snap.
First off, my mac recognized the box right off the bat since its USB compliant. I didn't have to do anything for it to recognize the box. However, two settings must be configured properly on the mac to get it to work the rest of the way: the input and output settings in the "sound" settings of the "System Properties" need to be set to "Fast Track USB." Make sure to crank the volume on the input setting all the way up (to the right). Second, you have to set your garageband settings properly...
Go into Garageband's "Preference" menu item and set the input and output to "Fast Track USB" as well. Then, plug your guitar into the 1/4" jack on the box. Finally, create a "real instrument" in garageband. You have to set the real instrument's track to read CHANNEL 2 and set the "monitor" to "on." That way you'll be able to hear the guitar through your speakers connected to the box (Incidentally, the XLR input on the box s/b considered channel 1 and the 1/4" input channel 2).
On the box, set the "mix" knob all the way to the right (full "playback" mode). Set the XLR "input" knob on the box all the way to the left. Set the "Output" knob high to the right. Now start playing your guitar. You should now be able to hear your guitar just fine through your speakers.
The extra software that comes with the box is awesome too - expecially the GT effects software. This stuff has really great sounds. With this, you won't need all the effects pedals; it's all right there with GT.
Now, the manuals are really poor. You'll find no help in them. In trying to get this thing working I poured over the forum comments on m-audio's site. Review comments their gave me some idea of what to do, but not completely. I had to do a little google searching before I got the other answers to the puzzle. Therefore, I only gave the product a total of 4 stars: 4 stars for the great sound and awesome software, but a ding for the crappy manuals and website support. I would buy the product again though.
