"Could not configure properly, does not pass AppleTalk"
I could not get this device to work properly in client mode, despite many years experience setting up wired and wireless networks. (My router is a D-Link Gamefuel wireless G.) It would frequently lose its settings for no apparent reason, and I'd be forced to reset the device to factory settings and start all over again. Also, it does not appear to support AppleTalk over wireless. This is the first purchase that I've returned to Amazon in 10 years.

"Wonderful tool for on the road"
I got this before a business trip recently. It is just what it is advertised to be: compact and functional.

The only negative I have about this device is that even though it can be powered over USB, the power connector on the device is not a standard USB connector, so you have to carry the included USB cable along. (not a big deal with the included zippered case)

The first time I tried to set it up, the wizard didn't save my configuration changes. I just ended up setting it up manually, so I never figured out if the wizard actually works or not.

The device supports WPA2-PSK, which is a good feature.

Range is a lot better than I would have thought. A colleague three hotel suites down (same floor though) than me was able to reliable use my connection.

"client mode not well thought out; won't connect to "54g only" network"
This is a useful device which I purchased mainly for its "client mode" and as a backup wireless router. Especially appreciated is the ability to run on USB power. However, I spent about six hours trying to get client mode to work on my wireless network. After much trial and error with various configurations, I found that this device doesn't like the "54g only" setting of my ASUS wireless router. It does eventually connect with 54g, so no idea why this setting poses a problem.

I have to say that the client mode is not well thought out. The web interface gives you none of the information necessary to diagnose wireless client problems. No info on whether the device successfully connected to the wireless network you configured, no connection strength, no bit rate-- nothing. So it's not a surprise that customers who have a problem with client mode quickly give up and return this device.

Another hint about client mode: although the configuration gives you the impression that you must manually choose a wireless channel, the device will indeed scan all channels regardless of your setting. This is just another thing to confuse users.

"Using in "client" mode, works well."
I've had this unit for about 3 weeks and have used it in multiple locations as a client to connect to wireless networks on a hard-wired NIC. Just set the mode switch, run the wizard, enter the appropriate information and you're connected. The wizard will list all available wireless networks it detects and allow you to chose the one you want.

I have not tested the Access Point or router functions but the client mode works very well.

"Great router"
It is a wonderful product, very compact, powerful and convenient. Please be not fooled by its size, it has all the function you need. I bought one for myself when I was traveling. Very unfortunately, my advisor saw it when I took it to office, and he love it very much and bought it from me:)

What our customer's say!

"Cool little router/AP/bridge", I bought this purely as a travel accessory. My parents have broadband, but no wireless, so the access point seemed very nifty. So I crack it out and realize is also a router and a bridge ( which they call client mode ). Oddly enough this may be the least expensive wireless bridge on the market right now.

It does WPA encryption and all the web front end is easy to figure out.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it should really have two wired ports for router functionality. If it did you could plug it into a switch and get all the capability of a full size router.

The size is amazing. It is smaller than my cell phone. It runs on 1.5 volts and comes with a USB power cable, a flat 3' network cable, and a regular power converter. The case is small, holds everything, and fits nicely even in small laptop bags.

"Works just like every other router I've ever seen, but just 1/10 the physical size", I travel alot, and quite often I end up in a hotel or meeting room with an ethernet connection, but no WiFi signal available. Sometimes the ethernet jack is not located where I want to set my computer up, other times I'd like to share my connection with other people, but most of the time I just find that whatever public wifi available is just too weak or too slow...

This wireless router always comes through as a little wonder!

It's smaller and lighter than my mouse and it fits easily in my notebook bag. It can be powered via either the included power supply (which is also impressively small and works with either 120V or 220V if you ever find yourself in Europe.) Or, it can be powered by the (included!) USB cable for those times where you can't spare an extra power outlet I love that single outlet they give you at some hotels... You know, the one built into the base of the lamp? Well the USB power cable is perfect for those times!

It instantly blankets the area with a wireless network to anyone in range. It works just as good as any other router I've seen, has the same admin page with a ton of features (firewall, mac filter, wep setup, etc. All the standard stuff) but is just so small and portable.

I always become the most popular person in the room after I plug this thing in. "Wow! I've got a signal now!", "It's so much faster than the hotel's wifi!", "Cool! I can get wifi in my room across the hall!", "Nice router! Will you sleep with me?" (OK so I haven't heard that last one yet, wishful thinking...)

It has a few different modes (router, access point, client) -- I've only ever used "router" mode as I never found the need for the other modes.

I can't imagine how you can possibly go wrong with this little device...!

"Nearly useless for Client Mode", I bought this primarily for Client Mode use. It turns out it's nearly useless for that:

- The documentation offers no real help in configuring it. Turns out the trick is, after setting it to Client Mode with the hardware switch, you need to fiddle it in the web interface using the default IP address, with the machine you are configuring it from configured to have a static address in the same subnet; and then change the machine to use DNS through the DWL-G730AP to your real router. Confusing matters is that once you've configured it, you can never access it again to change the configuration. Instead, you have to reset it (paper clip in a little hole). And then power cycle it--until you've power cycled it the reset doesn't really reset it, it puts it into "upload firmware if you dare" mode. And like I say, NONE of this is described in the documentation: not the paper quick start that comes with it, nor the so-called manual that is on the CD or downloadable from their web site. D-Link gets an F for the documentation.

- But after spending hours figuring out the above it does "work" in Client Mode. In that there's connectivity, for a while. But it's horribly slow. Using a direct wireless network adapter to talk wireless to my main router, or using a cable to it, I'm getting >10Mb/sec. Using the DWL-G730AP I'm getting < 0.2Mb/sec.

- And that was after freshly power cycling the DWL-G730AP. If you leave it running for a few hours it gets slower, and slower, dropping more and more packets. After a few hours it doesn't see the network any more at all. Sounds like maybe some kind of resource leak in the firmware? Dunno.

Anyway, in my experience it's useless in Client Mode. I'm returning it.

"Cheaper Alternative to the Xbox 360 Adapter", I use this device to connect my 360 to my wireless network. I didn't read the directions very carefully in the first place, but once I did set up was simple. This device even allows me to stream TV shows from my server which is a great bonus for me.

"in client mode, cannot connect to WPA2-secured router", we have 2 wireless routers, each serving multiple clients. one is an open, insecure router; the other is secured with WPA2.

in client mode, the DWL-G730AP can connect successfully with the open router, but not with the secure one. it shows up in the DHCP client list of the secure router, but cannot pass any data thru it.

i'm an experienced network administrator, and i couldn't make it work after several hours of trying.

"Who needs a WiFi device driver?", This device saved my laptop's Ubuntu installation. Before I got it, everyday sites like yahoo!mail and Angie's list would hang and stall, because the Ubuntu device driver for my Broadcom WiFi was really flakey. Well, an OS that can't handle the web sites I need to browse is just about useless.

But my laptop's "wired" ethernet works fine under Ubuntu. So I use the DWL-G730-AP in client mode, and suddently Firefox has no problems. Life is good.

Setup of the device is thru the web browser, so there is zero-install.

The trickiest part of installation is that before configuring the device you must give your ethernet interface a static IP address. But after the device is configured, you must give set your ethernet card to use dynamic IP assignment.

The DWL-G730 is sleek and stylish, and comes with a case to hold the device, its cables and charger. I'm very pleased. The only down side is its need for a power outlet.

"Awesome travel router!", I am actually writing this review using the DWL-G730AP access point. It's super tiny and works flawlessly.

I've used it a a hotel conference where the conference room had 1 lan port and using this router I managed to securely share that connection with over 20 attendees. Performance was more than acceptable and signal strength, despite it's dimunitive size, is impressive.

Overall a well balanced product. My only beef is that I wish they had made the power adapter even smaller, and oh yeah, the thing looks ugly. I wish they made it more stylish looking.

But those 2 caveats do not affect the performance of the router in any way, they are just my comments.

Go ahead and buy it! You'll be satisfied!

"Excellent product that could use better instructions", Most importantly, this product does what it says it does and it works perfectly once it's setup. I've used it while traveling across Asia Pacific and it did just what I wanted: It gave me an quick and easy to establish portable wireless presence with all of the convenience and freedom that comes with that.

My only complaint with the device -- and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars -- was that the setup documentation is lacking. I'm an IT professional and quite knowledgeable in this space. But I unnecessarily spent time trying to deal with setup because the documentation was not clear as to some options. To make matters worse, the D-Link support line was completely useless and, if anything, tried to lead me into choices that clearly would have made for more problems.

But, again, once setup this router is a winner.

"Poor performance and connectability", I had high hopes for this little thing to hook up to my (original) Xbox since it's in a room with no other connections. Unfortunately it barely worked at the best of times. First off, the setup instructions were useless, and I had to find better ones online that actually worked. Once setup, however, the device would refused to stay connected to the wireless signal for more than a few minuets, even though the router is only one room away and other wireless devices have never had any trouble with it. It also seems to randomly forget it's settings when turned off, requiring it to be setup again. Save your money and look elsewhere.

"Great Product", This is a spectacular product in every aspect. It works just like it should with no complicated instructions or cumbersome programming. The storage of components is perfect...everything is available in one place...small...compact. In a time when most things don't work like they should or are purported, it is a pleasure to find something that does.
