Others say...
"Amazing" Honestly, these speakers are awesome, and Amazon just raises the bar and is more awesome every day.
The sound quality is great, definitely worth the money. The dolby surround sound makes all your music sound fantastic, and what can i say they are loud!
I bought them for 223, less than a week later the price dropped to 189 and Amazon refunded the difference after i told them, seriously great customer service.
Oh, did i mention you should get these speakers? :)
"moderate quality speakers" These speakers are very good for computer use but there is two things that they lack to get a 5 star rating.
#1 only 1 woofer for each speaker (highs and lows are not seperated)
#2 quality for music is good for the price BUT if you wanted to get speakers specifically for listening to music do yourself a favor and get a higher quality brand such as Klipsch.
I use the z-5500 for my computer speakers and am very happy with them. But as I said if you want high quality speakers for music look elseware.
"Great Value For The Price" I purchased this item for ~$[...], as a replacement for an older high-end 5.1 system, which was taking up too much room in my new apartment (it had floor standing speakers, and an 18" subwoofer that was the size of a coffee table). [Un-equalized] the sound isn't as good, but it's pretty damn good for the price, and works well for just about everything (TV, Movies, Music, etc). Overall, it's very solid, and beats the crap out of built in TV speakers.
My two biggest critiques are:
1) The remote feels very cheap and flimsy (not that big of an issue). 2) The inputs are limited to 1 optical, 1 coax, and 1 [6-channel] surround stereo, which means I have to use other equipment to mux inputs (so I can connect my cable box, DVD player, and computer using the optical input).
"Great Product" Alright Guys, i was a little skeptical at first before buying the item. The reason being that the price is a little hefty if your just going to use it for a computer system. Any gamers out there... your family, friends or whoever is living with you will literally think there are gunshots going off in the house when they hear the sound quality. Best overall speaker system i've ever owned. Thanks to everyone who gave positive reviews that pushed me to buy the unit. Its a great system guys, logitech always has top quality product so do yourself a favor and 'Add to Cart'.
"Worth the Upgrade" Pros: The Digital SoundTouch control center with its generous inputs; digital signal processor is impressive for such a small unit; volume gets very loud; a convenient remote control; price.
Cons: Not much to complain here, but the satellite speakers doesn't have the natural and full sound of the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1 speaker system I have.
Other Thoughts: I switched out the Logitech satellites for the Klipsch from the Promedia Ultra 5.1 system. I did this because each Klipsch satellite has separate horn tweeter and midrange speaker. The mix-match system now sounds almost perfect to me. I got the Z-5500 to have the digital inputs for my PS3 and HDTV receiver and a remote control for convenience. Overall, the Logitech Z-5500 would be my 1st choice for building a computer entertaiment system.

What our customer's say!
"Gotta have this 5.1 speaker system!", I love this system. No, no I don't think you understand how great this system really is. It is very affordable, it is pretty small for a 5.1 speaker system and it can go with almost anything you can think of. I got this bad boy hooked up to my PS3 and I switched in between Xbox 360 and my PC. You can buy a 2 dollar optical digital cable for your Xbox or Ps3 (quality is better in my opinion) and you can hook it up to your 5.1 or 7.1 sound card in your pc and you can hook them both up at the same time. The set up is very minimal and the sound quality is incredible. The subwoofer is big though I gotta tell ya but boy does it deliver on the bass. The menu design is easy and intuitive and looks great with the LCD display. I really don't have any quarrels about this product, but don't expect it to be THE BEST THING you have ever heard, BUT it comes close.
"Unreal!", Words cannot describe the clarity and power of this system! Not to mention that the list price is $400 and Amazon sells it for under $200 (not including shipping). I recommend trying it for yourself.
"Great sounding speaker system", I bought this speaker system to replace my Klipsch Ultra Pro Media system when its amplifier failed (a very common problem with the Klipsch system). Until that time, I thought the Klipsch were the best sounding speakers available for computer use. I took a chance on the Logitech Z-5500 system and am not the least bit sorry. I am not a gamer so I cannot comment on that aspect but for music and videos, these speakers cannot be beat! The sub-woofer is large so make sure you have room for it under your desk. This system cannot compare to my home theater system but for listening to music and occasional DVD playback on the computer, it performs spectacularly. I should also mention that I like listening to my music as though it was being performed live -- not the terribly distorted booming bass popular with young people today.
"Awesome Speakers", I was searching for good digital speakers for my new rig and came across this model which was raved about by users across multiple websites. So after spending quite a while convincing myself that these were the speakers that I should be going in for, I finally took the plunge. Trust me when I say this, I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED. These speakers are way more than just a bang for the buck. They are high quality, premium surround sound equipment and will lighten up any living room to the pedestal of a home theater system. Great going Logitech !
"Best bang for your buck", this system is absolutely amazing. each speaker has a removable cover for a new look. it has optical, coax, and either (one) 5.1 input, or (three) individual inputs in the back. also has an output for headphone, and an input for mp3 use on the side. easy to use buttons, nice blue lcd screen. this thing goes so loud w/ bass that IT SHAKES THE ALUMINUM SIDING ON MY HOUSE FROM INSIDE MY BASEMENT!!!!!!! it's unbelievable! for less than $200 you cant go wrong and you won't be disappointed. also the speakers just have simple wire, so you can replace the speaker wire to move and stretch the speakers and mount them where ever you want.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Avoid at all costs", This unit is great when it works, but the controll head will fail. They know it. Look up answer 7333 on their website. You will be out of warrantee, so tough luck. You will be offered the chance to buy a replacement system, not just the head, with a 30 day warranty for half off their list price.
"Huge power at your fingertips", When I bought my new PC about a year ago I knew that I wanted great sound for my $1200 investment. After a lot of research I decided on the Bose Companion II Series II speakers. They sound great, and despite their high price tag, I was happy.
Still, this new high end PC had a 5.1 coax output that was going unused, and in all fairness, the Bose speakers I owned couldn't pump out any sound I would consider loud. So I did away with the Bose with the hope of rattling the walls and listening to movies in surround sound. Continuing with my "go big or not at all" attitude, I decided on the Logitech Z-5500.
First off, this is not a light system. It weighs 55 pounds (probably 50 of that is subwoofer) so this doesn't feel like some cheap toy. The UPS guy was happy when I signed off because I would imagine carrying this beast back to the truck would not be ideal in the 100 degree Virginia summer. So, the box is huge, but everything inside is well placed, and easy to figure out.
There are 4 identical satellite speakers with swiveling bases so you can wall mount them. The center channel is the same as the sattelites except it is on its side, but again the base moves for wall mounting. The sound is controlled by a sound dock with a large knob, and a few buttons that let you control settings and all that good stuff. The back has one input for coax digital, one for optical digital, and a direct 6 channel input. The side has an input for headphones, and one underneath for a headphone to headphone jack (for MP3 players and such).
Then there is the sub. This 50 pound monster is a 188 watt side firing sub that delivers rock solid bass. Now some reviews of "the house shaking" are a little extreme. If you set the right EQ and crank the volume, then yes, you will rattle your brain. Most of the time the sound is more conservative.
The Z-5500 sounds great and has tons of power. There is no lack of it. This system gets REALLY loud. It can hit a level of loud that makes conversation impossible and a level of loud that keeps the party going. For a lot of system, turning the volume to 50% is unrealistic because the more you turn it up, the more distortion and lack of power you get. That 50% is really more like %80 of the power you have. Not here. When you crank it up you realize that the Z-5500 will keep up with you. I fear to put it past 75% of the max volume for fear of the cops being called.
The quality of the sound is also very good. There is great separation from the speakers no matter what mode you are listening to. Movies with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound great. DTS even better. For music, there are Pro Logic II modes to create a fake 5.1 experience, on top of the standard stereo and quad sound (the rears playing the front mix). The only thing worth mentioning is that unless you have a great EQ for your computer, sometimes the bass and highs are a little too much. These are not the best sounding speakers I have ever heard, but they get really loud and sometimes the shock value alone of the sound they produce hides any disappointment in the full range.
So in short...
Pros -
- Way more power than you need at your desk. This is really nice for action movies or loud music. Watching other people when I crank it is always great. They always get that "holy crap!" look on their faces because they are being rocked by a wall of sound. - Easy to control and set up. If you are interested in expensive 5.1 speakers for your computer than you probably won't find this to be anything over your head. - Nice clean look to the package. The satellites are not huge, and the sound dock has a nice look to it with the light blue display. - This can hook up to almost anything, making it a good solution for DVD players, or an Xbox 360, etc. - The different audio modes are nice. Pro Logic II modes, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.. You can really mix it all up here.
Cons -
- The sub is really big, and can limit where you can put this. On top of this, it is heavy, making hauling this system a little bit of a workout. - The included remote is cheap and does not fit in with the quality of the build.
Overall -
Lots of power in a nice looking package. This system hooks up to a lot and sounds good doing it. I am happy with my purchase and offer a high recommendation.
"Awesome!!", Incredible sound system. It was easy to set up, and immediately started producing high quality sound. Even turning the volume all the way up, no sound quality is sacrificed. Produces clean music even while your kitchen is shaking from the bass. Not only that, but I discovered a few weeks after buying it that there is a 'Boost' mode, activated if you keep turning the volume knob past full. It goes up to Boost 11 (or 13, I forget)... it is awesome.
The only downside is that now I need better encoded MP3's to take full advantage of this system.
"Incredible Sound Quality", I really don't have anything negative to say about this system.
After losing my beloved Altec Lansing system (8 years, not bad!), I tried to replace them with the cheaper Logitech G51 system - that was a mistake. The subwoofer was great, but the way it processed the surround sound was pitiful, and within a week I had returned them.
This system, the Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System, was more expensive, but ultimately it is worth the price (especially if you find a deal). The audio is crystal clear, the surround sound is perfect.
Setup was easy - the system uses actual 18-gauge speaker wire, which is nice if you ever need to replace it or extend it (the system includes 3x 15' and 2x 25' wires, which was plenty for my setup - no having to rearrange your living room). The subwoofer is huge (the photos don't capture the sheer size of the system), so take that into account if you're short on space. The auxiliary input on the control center is also quite handy if you have friends wanting to share tracks from their iPods, etc.
"Can't beat em for the price...", First off, I am an audio engineer so high quality sound is very important to me. I have owned this speaker set over a year with no problems. I bought it to replace my Klipsch 2.1 set, which eventually broke. Keep in mind the majority of the time I am listening at low to moderate volumes to not disrupt my roommates and prevent hearing loss. This system is capable of being very loud (I'm sure 100dB+) without distorting.
You must use the subwoofer for the full experience with this system, as it generates all the lower frequencies the satellite speakers are unable to. Bass output is easy adjusted from the control unit.
The sound when listening to music and movies is crystal clear. I occasionally use it for my Xbox 360, with which it performs quite well. 90% of the time I use it with the optical output on my Mac Pro. Sound is exceptional when watching a movie encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1 or dts.
My only complaint is that I wish it had more than 1 optical input so I could use it with my 360/Mac without swapping cables. It also lacks an HDMI input. For the price, I really can't complain a bit though.
