"Friendly enough when one gets to know her", First, there are multiple ways of finding foods:
a. browse the 30 or so food categories
b. global search for foods by name (i.e., search the complete database)
c. local search for foods by name (i.e., search only within an existing list of foods)
A mouse click and a few keystrokes are "hard"?

Second, even standard unprocessed food items (eggs, apples, broccoli, etc.) vary somewhat in nutritional contents; let alone processed foods like hamburgers, spaghetti, ice cream, etc. HPDriver might want to compare labels of a few different brands of chicken soup to see these variations. We use the USDA food database. This is the most reputable food database available to nutrition software makers.

Third, starting a new file every day can be extremely convenient, just like starting a new Word document every time you write a letter. There are tons of benefits of having daily food files: easy sharing; no gaping holes when you miss recording your food intakes for a few days; professionals can automatically generate menus for clients and give them daily printed menus, etc. Usefulness is limited only by one's creativity.

Fourth, if you want to compare days side by side, then (see item 3 above) just print out as many days as you want to compare, lay them side by side on the desk or floor and compare. The printed daily food files have far more information than the data displayed on screen, much more suitable for comparison. BTW, we haven't seen any nutrition software that allows side by side comparison of any daily intake anyway, especially, if all food data are recorded in one file. This criticism is self-contradictory.

Fifth, Calorie Counter, as its simple name implies, is at the basic end of our feature spectrum. If you want daily, weekly, averages, there are other programs in our catalog that provide this feature. Naturally, these are more expensive. Still, is there any other (non-NutriGenie) program at any price on the market that can automatically generate a complete and balanced daily menu for you based on the exact calorie level you specify (1560 or 2437 calories or whatever number between 800 and 3000 calories)? This program is only as good as its user. If you know how to take advantage of it, it can be very useful.

In any case, it's always best to download the free trial software before buying. The key difference between the free version and the full version is the size of the food database. This day and age, there is no reason to be totally surprised and disappointed with a software purchase when one takes the reasonable precautionary step of tire kicking above.
