"More historical treasure than good flick" I purchased this movie because I saw some of the action sequences in a documentary. Most of the pilots in the movie were actual WW-I pilots and the planes were period accurate and so rare to see flying. This movie is a true glimpse into the time. The story is typical silent movie converted to "talkie". The elaborate physical acting during a dogfight scene is incredibly funny with sound. I am glad to own it although I doubt I will watch it again anytime soon.
"A Very Pleasant Surprise!" My interest in this film was sparked by its spotlighting in the recent blockbuster, "The Aviator", about the life of the late Howard Hughes.
"Hell's Angels" was Hughes' 1930 endeavor at directing. It is about WWI aviation in the British Royal Flying Corps. The extreme production cost of the film was scandalous and unprecedented. The flying action was uprecedented as well and extremely well done. A running sub-plot in the film involves a love triangle involving the steamy Jean Harlow. I never even knew who Jean Harlow was, other than by name. The film revealed her to be quite a babe. Smoke started coming out of my TV when she gave her line, "Would you be shocked if I put on something more comfortable?". (Yes, I was). (Hey, this was 1930!).
In addition to being quite an engaging story, running over 2 hours (also unprecedented), it is a time capsule of aviation and society almost 80 years old as I write this. Heck, there is a still photo of a childhood Jean Harlow's character, Helen, in the film that looks like it was taken by Matthew Brady.
The story as depicted gave rise to a couple of trivial questiions for me . . . #1, What was the function of "night patrol" in aircraft with no radios, radar, or lights? It sounds romantic, but seems rather useless., #2, The 2 lead men get absolutely blind drunk, apparently with the consent of their command, just minutes before going on the "critical mission" (my, things have changed).
Let me add a little more about the flying sequences. Film technology being very primitive when this was made (it was barely a "talkie"), there were no computer generated images and blue-screen tricks. Everything on the screen was filmed using limited modeling techniques, or live action. There is a LOT of live action, sometimes literally filling the sky with dogfighting airplanes. One attack/battle even involved a huge zeppelin. The technical insights into the operation and flight of the planes was excellent. Hughes' own skill as a flyer probably helped him in identifying the important technical aspects and limitations of these relatively simple flying machines. This is great stuff and should even keep jaded "Top Gun" fanatics riveted.
Great restoration and transferral to DVD, by the way. Sound was quite adequate (this film started production as a silent movie!), and there are even some limited color sequences.
Recommended not just as an historical film, but as a great film in its own right. I think men and women can both enjoy this.
"Great Times !!" The Film: Fantastic film making, this film was made in the "cut off" of silent pictures, and amazes me every time i see it !! The pictures in this wonder, are sublime. Though the story needs some cutting edge, in contrast to our film making standards today, it's simply amazing What Mr. Hughes Did with this piece !!
The Dvd: Crap !! But Ok pixel Quality !!
"Howard Hughes' Hell's Angles" Well, what can I say? It's a classic alright and a keeper for that reason alone but it does reveal why Holly Wood did not take Howard Hughes seriously as a movie director/producer. Lucky for him he kept his day job as an Aviator.
"Hell's Angels" I enjoyed the movie very much. It is a melodrama, but it captures the feelings of the young men caught up in the madness of the World War. The dogfighting scenes are phenomenal. Howard Hughes spared no expense in making the scene as accurate as possible. You will feel like you are there. I would recommend this movie to war buffs and great movie lovers alike.

What our customer's say!
"Old movies are classic!", This is truely a piece of history. Good for any who is a history buff, or a theater one as well. Highly recommended.
"DVD", This is a great old movie I've watched it several times. Good price and good service, would recommend to anyone and will shop again.
"A Great Aeronautical Engineer, but No Movie Director", On the plus side of this movie are the extensive air battles with readily available (11 years after the end of WWI)correct aircraft. The zeplin scenes are also terrific. BUT ...
Other than Jean Harlow, the acting is terrible, the plot line sophomoric, and the continuity terrible. Perhaps because is was assembled from different copies of the film, most of the daylight sequences are in black and white, but a dance segment is in color. The night shots all look like a blue filter was placed over the lens.
This appears to have been a transition film between Silents and Talkies. Dialogue is used in most of it, but scenes have the choppy transitions of a silent film. New scenes are often introduced with a silent movie style introduction in Old English, illumunated text.
I bought "Dawn Patrol" at the same time and there is no comparison between the two. Dawn Patrol features a well written script and excellent actors. "Hell's Angels" serves as an example of what happens when those two essential ingredients are missing. No amount of exciting hardware can overcome that lack.
"What More Can You ask For?", A beautiful woman to die for, airplanes, dog fights and exciting gun play all wrapped into 1 classic pre-censor movie. A classic! This flick makes Top Gun look like the childs play that it is. These pilots, including producer Howard Hughes, actually risked their lives (and sadly 4 lost their life)in the making of this classic. Eat your hearts out Maverick and Iceman. These are the real air studs, not you hacks.
"Hell's Angels is A Classic", Made many years before the age of graphic animations replacing live flying scenes, this movie is an air war enthusiast's prized asset. Howard Hughes, himself a pilot, spared no expense in getting scores of airplanes built and hired former combat pilots of WWI for the flying shots in this movie. One owes a debt of gratitude to those technicians who painstakingly restored a high quality DVD from brittle old reels of the original movie.

"WW1 movie", I enjoy flying movies, especially WW1 films, although many of the genre are less than good. This one however is very good. Something that matters to me is authenticity of the hardware as a dedicated aviation buff and this film was made close enough to the end of WW1 to use actual surplus aircraft. The few that were not were skillflly made over to pass well enough. One director on being taken to task for his use of obviously non authentic items in his films stated "truth lies in art, not verisimilitude" He is entitled to his opinion, I prefer the real thing; or as close a representation as possible. Hells Angels passes with flying colors.
"An Exploding Dirgible, Two Loyal Brothers, and Jean Harlow.", In 1930 when HELL'S ANGELS was released, it was one of the most anticipated films of all time. The movie took over three years to get made and had cost nearly four million dollars to produce, largely because of the perfectionism of director & producer Howard Hughes. Hughes wanted the film to have the most realistic camera shots ever seen from air. He hired actual WWI pilots to fly his film's air force. However, at one point he was so disappointed by some of the footage that he took off in one of the planes to get the shots he wanted himself. He ended up crashing the plane and broke a bunch of bones, but he did get the footage he wanted. As a result, HELL'S ANGELS has some of the best aerial photography seen on film.
HELL'S ANGELS is also significant because it was one of the first movies to fully incorporate sound. The film was original shot as a silent picture, but with the advent of sound, Hughes re-shot much of the movie and dubbed the rest. This delayed the movie's premier for about a year.
The storyline of the film is rather simple. The film opens in Germany where two brothers, Roy (James Hall) and Monte Rutledge (Ben Lyon) are spending a vacation away from Oxford visiting the home of one of their friends, Karl Armstedt (John Darrow) from school. Some comical adventures ensue and the trio returns to Oxford. Early in the semester, WWI breaks out. Karl receives a notice that he's been drafted into the German airforce and Roy and Monte leave school to join the RAF. Roy and Monte are very close brothers, but they have completely different personalities. Monte is wild, a drunkard, and a womanizer. He's also afraid of combat. Roy, on the other hand, is an upstanding citizen who lives a temperant life and is devoted to only one woman, his girl Helen (Jean Harlow). Helen, though, isn't suited for monogamy and fools around with other men and even Monte when Roy isn't around. The babe between the brothers almost destroys their relationship, but in the end doesn't. When Monte volunteers for a dangerous bombing mission, Roy volunteers too. Their mission leads them deep into enemy territory and the brothers are confronted with a critical choice.
Outside of these themes and the amazing aerial sequences, the other reason that HELL'S ANGELS is historically significant is that it was the major film debut of Jean Harlow. Not only that, but thanks to a vault find in John Wayne's estate, HELL'S ANGELS features the only surviving color footage of Harlow in known existence.
As far as story goes, HELL'S ANGELS follows the plot of a typical action-buddy flick. However, it does a couple things better than many pictures similar to it. First, it does a better than normal exploration of the bonds of fidelity between brothers. The other thing HELL'S ANGELS does really well is providing a completely unexpected ending. This combined with the exceptional aerial cinematography and the feature debut of Jean Harlow, make HELL'S ANGELS a must see picture for movie lovers.
""The Aviator" Created a Great Film", My interest in this film was totally spawned by the Hughes' bio film "The Aviator." My only other knowledge of a Hughes film is "The Outlaw" which has its points, but for the most part, a B+ grade western (if that.) "The Aviator" had stressed the flying sequences and the way that Hughes had formed his own air force to produce many of the flight sequences.
My own surprises were largely related to the characters, the wording of the script (this was, after all, started as a silent film, finished as a talkie), and the overall message of the film.
In a more typical film - with a general scenario of 'college buddies go to war' - all the main characters would live to the end, with some sort of heroic death involved that somehow saved the other two; something like "Pearl Harbor" for example. "Hell's Angels" doesn't follow the typical scenario.
And at the end, even though the relative gentility of the military of the Brits and the Germans, war was seen as a bloody business, exercises in futility even when the men who sacrificed their lives to short term gains ultimately are shwon to have gained nothing in the larger picture.
The use of the two brothers as near opposites in personality and behavior seems too obvious now, but there is nothing obvious about the ending!
"Hell's Angel", Excellent quality picture and sound. A remarkable picture, especially considering that it was released only a few years after the opening of the sound era. Special effects in the zeppelin sequence were superior to many films made during WWII. I don't know the production deails, but it appears that in many of the air scenes the performers were actually in the airplanes (no process screen work). It is good to see this film in conjuncton with "The Aviator".
"You have to consider when it's made.....", After seeing "The Aviator" we were curious about the movie. I would have given it a 1 star, but my husband said you have to consider WHEN it was made. They all "over acted"back then because they were just coming off silent movies. It was kind of fun to watch it from the stand point of recently seeing "The Aviator". You could see when Hughes was loosing it, you could see the problems he had while making it. I guess my husband was right, a 3 star might be good for this movie. The story was pretty decent, the plane fight was pretty amazing for the time it was made considering they didn't have "CG" back then!!
