"Clunky disappointment"
I bought this to throw together some quick drawings for clients, but it is so clunky, that I just use my full version of AutoCAD 2006. I admit that I have not spent any time trying to set it up, and I have spent years setting up AutoCAD.

"AutoSketch 9"
If you are the average person (like me) wanting to create a drawing be prepared to take a study to learn this program. Otherwise you will not get the drawing you want. Too hard to understand.

"Excellent Value For a Mechanical Drafting Program"
I purchased this program after trying to install an older version of AutoCadLT that just wouldn't work with WindowsXP. By the way I paid over $500 for that version. I've used AutoSketch to build a wheel chair ramp and it worked perfectly. This program is everything I will need to get dimensioned drawings for projects that require this type of work. I'm using it now to see how existing furniture will fit into a new house we're in the process of buying. So far no complaints - you will have to be familiar with principals of mechanical drafting to get the most from this, but out of the box I was productive and very proficient in a couple of days.

"AutoDesk AutoSketch 9"
The program is improved over the previous editions. The ease of loading and getting the program up and running on the XP system is Great. New features allow easy entry and changes.

"Autodesk AutoSketch 9"
I bought this program as I have been drawing for years with Windows cad and Quick cad. They worked great on the older windows system but when we upgraded to 2000 xp we started having problems with lock ups. I took a chance (as Autodesk bought out those companies) to see if I could access my older .cad extension files. This program will load the old files and save them in a .cad format or the .skf which it normal saves files. The only caution is once you have loaded and saved in the Auto desk auto sketch, you can't go backwards. Your old software will not be able to read it. A good drawing package for a good price.

What our customer's say!

"help", I discovered my 14yr old son making amazing house plans on our Paint program. He has also designed T-shirts for a BMX bike company.

Which would be an appropriate software program to further his design/architectural interests and talents and not too "over his head" that it would cause frustration and intimadation. Keep in mind he is 14yrs old with no drafting experience.

Thank you,
Mom

"Long time with Autosketch", I have used Autosketch since version 1.0 DOS (some collector?), and have never find something better for that price. Unfortunately it's not allowed to be exported to Mexico (Why Amazon?). My last version is 8.0, and I hope to find V 9.0 on my next visit to US.
I highly recomend it

"Great for precision line drawings with solid and hatch fill", Re: Mr. Thompson's comment
I made a macro to do the transform operation he is referring to. I select the object(s), press the transform macro I created, then hit the first point and second point. Viola! This program is so easy to use. I figured it out in like 2 hours... Of course there were a lot of things I learned as I went along and if you use it every day you get real fast. It is easy to make precision drawings. Adding dimensions is simple. There are a few things that you figure out as you go along that make your life easier. selecting a color and hatch fill are so easy (2 clicks - click fill solid or hatch and the select color) no problem with the border line whatsoever. I figured that I knew this program so well I could figure out Auto CAD easy enough.... not so... AutoCAD is definitely more complicated. It makes line drawings very well. It has simple 3D effects (basically orthogonal, parallel and perspective extrusions) but not any kind of 3D modeling. A great program. If that's all you need don't waste you money on something more like AutoCAD.

"VISTA", i have Vista on my computer and im having trouble installing it.....i havnt had a chance to get online to see if theres a patch or fix for my problem

"Clumsy and difficult to learn", I bought this product to do 2D mechanical drawings. I work at a research center that has a small machine shop and in which I do quite a bit of work. I've used AutoCAD in the past and thought that this would make AutoSketch easy to learn.

I was wrong. I found it to be clumsy and slow and difficult to learn. Ultimately, I purchased AutoCAD LT and I still haven't found anyone at the center who wants AutoSketch for free.

"good but not AutoCAD LT", It works well, but is not AutoCAD LT. I have been a LT user for years and find the change like changing word processors - similar but different. Tutorial was good and helped with changes from LT. I made decent drawing in a few hours after getting it installed.

"AutoSketch 9 - The whole 9 yards", This program is a straight shooter, right out of the box. Intuitive, and yet, totally customizable. I learned to draft before there was CAD. I've been a hand drawer ever since because of cost and complication. I completed my first project using AutoSketch 9 in the same (or less) estimated time doing it by hand - and I hadn't even opened the manual. With an extensive (very) library, and total scaleability - This is a home run!!!

"Good Basic CAD Program", I am very pleased with AutoShetch 9, it does everything I need, except, it is not compatiable with Symbols 2000. Amazon sells Symbols 2000 as an add on to AutoSketch, it will not work. If you don't belive me, check it out at the AutoDesk web site. What it does is well worth the money.

"AutoSketch-9", I think that the program is good. I find it somewhat hard to use, however my assessment is quite unfair in that I have been using AutoCAD-2000. The difficulty lies in "backing up" from the premier software to software understandably not as capable. There is another learning curve to navigate.

"Good value, different look from AutoCAD", I have been an AutoCAD user for about 13 years. In starting my own business, I wanted an inexpensive tool that would allow me to produce 2-D drawings accurately and efficiently with the skills I already have.

AutoSketch 9 seems to have all the tools I need, like drawing tools, modifying, layers, blocks, object snaps and inquiries, but the icons are often different than ACAD, and less intuitive. Some of the terminology is apparently designed for non-engineers (e.g. "group" instead of "block", "transform" instead of "modify"), so I have to translate from what I'm used to. But essentially, it does the job and fit my budget.

For comparison, I also downloaded a free 30-day trial of IntelliCAD from Autodsys. I liked the look and feel of it better than Autosketch, but the base cost for the standard version is $149, and I paid around $50 for Autosketch through one of Amazon's 3rd party sellers. So I guess I'll stick with what I have, unless I get really annoyed by the icons, or find some other limitation I can't live with.

Added 7/6/06: I wasn't able to enter numeric coordinates in AutoSketch! This is a must for me, so I ordered IntelliCAD and will not go back to AutoSketch.
