"WOW! Can't believe all the negative reviews"
This is a huge improvement over every previous version. I've used several versions of ACT back to 3.0. The most recent version I used was 2000. It has always been a somewhat buggy regardless of what version but overall has worked well.

THE UPSIDES

- Company!!! - Finally ACT allows you to create a company and assocate multiple contacts with it. Before if you had 50 contacts for the same company they were all individual contacts. Now you can get a rolled-up snapshot of a company and all of the contact's notes, activities, etc. If you have customers with a gazillion contacts or have used a CRM system like Saleslogix or Microsoft CRM this is a big deal.

- SQL Database - The ancient flat file has finally been replaced by a true database. Now you can actualy have multiple people working on a record without being kicked out.

- Attachments!!! - Finally you can attach a file and it's stored in the ACT database. In previous versions the ACT attachment was just a link and if you deleted (or moved) the file from your hard drive the attachment in ACT wouldn't open because it coulnd't find the file on your hard drive.

- Secondary Contacts - This is pretty nice. Now you can associate contacts with another contact. Good for creating assistants, contractors, leads sources, etc.

- Importing - has more options and functionality.

- Other stuff - Map button to pull contact address for getting directions is a nice add. The layout tool gives you a lot more flexibility. You can now keep formats in notes (Word bullets, font type/colors, etc) instead of your formatting being stripped when you copy/paste. You can now associate multiple contacts with activities and notes. The search tool has been enhanced to search by ranges, high/low, etc. Great for creating targeted marketing lists.

THE DOWNSIDES:

- Still a bit buggy - I ocassionally get error messages when using the design tool.

- Linking contacts - Although there's a batch method of linking contacts to a company there doesn;t appear to be a batch method of linking a company to multiple contacts. This must be done one-by-one and is time consuming.

- Performance - I've read a ton of complaints about performance. Guess what folks. This isn't a lightweight product anymore. It won;t run on your 5 or 10 year old computer. In fact it probably won't run well on that $300 Dell you just bought. I have it running on a 1.8ghz laptop with 2 gigs of RAM and it runs great. Starts up in a few seconds, searches instantly, etc.

- Converting previous versions of ACT - You can import/convert older ACT databases but ACT 2005 is a totally new program. Because it now has a company structure and older ACT versions don't, you'll be forced to go through a workaround process of importing companies, importing contacts, and then linking the contacts to the companies.

- Updates - I installed the most recent update from ACT's Web site and it caused problems. It probably depends on what version you have but I'd avoid the updates. I re-installed ACT from the disk (Version 7.0.399.0) and it runs fine.

IN SUMMARY

I think this is the best version (maybe minus version 2006) they've released. I didn't give it 5 stars because it still has some bugs and requires some manual workarounds that I think should have been somehow automated. I'm a salesperson but am also pretty technical so maybe that had something to do with me not having that many problems. If you're not technical I'd recommend having someone else install and configure it for you. Also I'd recommend buying a higher end PC to run it or you'll be disappointed. Earlier versions of ACT were simple enough to throw the disk in and let it install itself. Not anymore. Especially with SQL. I think it could use some improvments but it is by far the best version (functionality-wise) they've released.

"Waste of time"
I spent 2 weeks trying to make ACT2005 work. It has numerous problems, multiple malfunctions in multiple features, won't synch with handheld, and runs very SLOW. Tech support told me there was something wrong with my computer, however the computer ran fine before I installed ACT2005 and runs fine now that ACT2005 has been uninstalled. Total waste of my time and money.

"ZERO stars "
Zero stars isn't an option but it should be.
After hours getting the *%%^#@@*& program to install, I went to convert my old data bases. Only to discover that only the most basic fields would convert without major consternation. Since I had completely customized my previous ACT I went looking for help - which by the way was no where to be found in ACT's new user guide which I spent extra $$ for. When I read all of the challenges here I have decided to go back to my 6.0 ACT version.
Thanks for saving me days of time trying to get this program to function even as well as my old one does.

"Installation problems"
My husband and I have been using ACT! for our small business for over 13 years. We recently attempted to upgrade from ACT! 2000 to ACT! 2005 because of compatibility problems with newer versions of MSWord. What a nightmare! We couldn't even get the software to install on our new Dell system. We contacted technical support for ACT and were directed to a document containing and endless list of system checks and changes to make. We spent over 2 hours slogging our way through the list, and hardly made a dent in it. Then we took a look at reviews of the product and decided not to bother with the upgrade. We're returning the software for a refund and sticking with ACT 2000 until we can find something better, or until the makers of ACT! get their act together.

"Don't waste your money on this product."
I had been a long time user of ACT since '99. Back when it was a Symantic product. I Bought Act! 2000 and had used it up until a few weeks ago. It did everything I needed it to, so I never needed to upgrade. That is until we upgraded to MS Office 2003 and the word processor stopped working with the mail merge.
I wish I had read these reviews before I bought ACT! 8. It took a month for them to ship it to me. It took 3 days & numerous tries to install it, and it still doesn't run right.
It's so slow It's barely usable.
Want to find a contact? please wait 30 seconds
Want to write a letter? another 30 seconds.
Oh and I'm running a brand new Dell laptop, with lots of power.
No, this program is garbage. Complete waste of money.

What our customer's say!

"Dreadful - serious waste of money and time", If you are a user of previous versions of Act!, I reccommend you avoid this software. It will cost you far more than you pay. The new owners of Act! are difficult and unhelpful and the many many problems of the software are almost impossible to resolve. I've gone back to a previous version and written off the cost of buying Act 2005 as experience not to deal with this company again.

"Extremely difficult to learn. I despise ACT!", Do yourself a favor and stay away from ACT! software. They should be embarrassed to sell this piece of trash.

"Act 2005 is a major disappointment!", We had the old ACT 2000 and it worked great but we needed to upgrade it so our envelopes would print out properly. We purchased a 5 user license and the ACT 2005 has been a major disappointment. It is slow in booting up even on newer computers and if you haven't worked in it for 10 minutes or so, it can take 30 seconds of waiting before you can fill in a data field. ACT 2005 was released with a lot of bugs, there were some major patches and then guess what? Sage decides in their wisdom not to support the software anymore, they will just release ACT 2006 and then ACT 2007. These people don't care about their products or their customers, its all about the money to them. Avoid this garbage at all costs!!!

"ACT! has taken a "dump" since Sage took over", Used to be a great product. I've been using ACT! for over 10 years. Since Sage took over, it's slower, wont do faxes, wont do macros, is tempermental, fields sometimes don't accept input. But worst of all is the incredible "nickel and diming". $70 for their paperback guidebook? $300 for tech support -- and then you wait to speak to someone in India? Do yourself a favor and see if you can live with Microsoft's less sophisticated but less larcenous database.

"Someone needs to Sue these people", I started with Act4 and decided to upgrade to the newer and better Sage Act 2006. It immedialtely had problems. I bought the service agreement for Act2006(its expensive) This agreement ends in Sept 2007. I was told that with this special #### I would get special Treatment..(boy did I go for the ole okey doke). I just received from Sage the annoucement for the new Act2007. That states Sage will not be offering any support for Act2006 as of 11/30/2006. So the so called service agreement(that you never get through to anyone that you can understand.)That was purchased for Act2006 will not be supported after Nov 2006.
Beware be very aware.....

Read this reviews before You buy...

"ACT! 2005...Gone BAD!", Act has been a constant software companion for me since the 2.0 version with miles and miles of my most sacred business data. I always upgraded the product as soon as the new versions came out and for the most part was always happy with the new releases.

But when ACT! 2005 came out I heard some bad stories from inital reviews so I waited....then an update for 2005 came out to correct many of the issues the original release exhibited.

So I finally decided to upgrade, convert my old data over and expected to have a pleasant experiece with the latest features and supposedly speed that SQL use was to provide. WRONG!

After working with my data for awhile I noticed the database was SLOW, I was missing fields, notes, history, etc. but not for all of my contacts, it seems interspersed throughout my database. In using the layout designer tool it has hosed up my layouts so bad that some fields do not even show up in the Layout Designer but in the Contact View are way over to one side. This has cost me many hours of work trying to get my ACT! 2005 to function properly out of the box.

Do not buy this product, it is a waste of your money and will waste your time, especially if you used previous versions of ACT! and will frustrate the heck out of Advanced ACT! user.

I am going back to ACT! 6.0, atleast there is support for it for a few more years and give me time to look at other products in the market place.

"What is going on?", I first began to work with ACT! in 1987 when the original founders of Contact Software showed up in my office and presented their ACT! software to me for testing. At the time I was a partner with a Big 8 accounting firm working with startup technology companies. I thought enough of the software and the company to leave the world of public accounting and join the company as their president and CEO for a short time to get them focused and funded.

Since that time, I have used ACT! as an executive search consultant, CEO of several companies, and a consultant to senior executive teams. My active data base contains over 8,000 contacts and the record of my contacts with each.

Over the years I have seen this software grow with pride knowing that I had a hand in helping it begin. The features that have been added have added considerable value to my services and the work I do.

However, I find that since ACT! 2005 my world of contact management has traveled a bumpy road. The performance issues of the past seem to have subsided some with an update release of 2005 I installed some time ago. The comments I read here about 2006 give me great concern about my future use of ACT!

It seems that SAGE needs to assemble a team to take apart the current version of ACT! and do some serious re-engineering to bring the software back to what is used to be . . . a powerful contact manager with a user interface that became second nature for those who really used it to track and manage their interface with others . . . . with a data base engine that delivered performance that worked at the speed of the mind and the fastest fingers around. This was the secret of the original version of ACT! . . . I believe any new user of this software needs to proceed with eyes wide open or face the consequences experienced by others who have posted their frustration here.

"Abundant functionality, but painstakingly slow...", Having used Outlook formy primary contact management software the past 2 or 3 years, I figured that to further develope my business, I'd step it up to something a little more powerful - and this is it!

It took some getting used to and definitely a lot of after hours configuration to get the Contact Fields/Opportunity Lists/Groups set up & organized the way I liked them - but now that it's all done, I look forward to putting it to great use.

For the most part I am satisfied, but I do have a few quams - too many to list in all, but here are a few:

I have 1gb RAM and a 3.00ghz pentium and the program IS slow to load (compared to most). Sometimes the program drops contacts altogehter, (but they're there again when I reopen the database or create new contact - kind bizarre). The date fields seem to function "okay," though they do not like blank values - and default to 11/30/96 of somewhere thereabouts.

I liek the program in all, but anticipate an updated release. HTHs. JOE

"Hey! - be nice to Beta testers - I was one of them - BUT......", I am a stock broker (financial planner) employed at a large national firm. CRM software is vitally important to my business.
I have been an avid user since FirstAct! for Dos.

I have a confession to make - Yep, I was a Beta tester for ACT!2005.

I ran a "test database" in standalone along side of version 6 where I duplicated my notes for about 6 weeks. I wanted to be careful. Each week I faithfully provided my input - all problems on many of the feedback items I see at this site. As I proceeded to actually converting to ACT!2005 I had no idea of what it would actually cost me in production time. ($,000's) I optomistically believed quirks would be corrected quickly by the developers, so I stepped up and made the converion for my 2 person team.

To me, this seemed to be the most hyped and quickly released version of all. Now I spell it "CASH GRAB."

If you have more than one user stay away from this product - to even load it and set it up, you should be a highly qualified and incredibly patient network administrator. If your workstations are "secure or locked down" as our's are - set-up is next to impossible.

You can't readily save your database easily to multiple locations. Backups are intollerably slow - if completed at all.

Options to "customize" preferences are fewer in this version than any version in memory.

Groups are impossible to work with.

Editing histories is bad at best - too many screens required compared to the old version.

Did I mention SLOW.

I like to print my task list each day. I can see it on-screen, but don't think God could print it.

I forgot to mention SLOW.

Unfortunately I have suggested other teams in our office upgrade to the new version - their databases were created in version 6 - and they have other problems we don't. I wish I had never stuck my neck out.

Now, I am looking for alternatives. Does anyone know of any CRM that can convert ACT!2005 notes.

Even after nearly 12 years, if I can find one, I'll be history.....

"This product is crap!", If you are thinking about buying this software, don't! Save your money and get a rolodex, it would be easier to use and operate much faster. I purchased this product less than 90 days ago for about $200. As of today, it won't even start up. When I went to the ACT website I was dissapointed to find out that you can't get technical support unless you pay them IN ADVANCE for the help. From the day I installed this program my computer became sluggish, requiring many restatrs throughout the day. Send a message to the makers of ACT...don't buy this product!
