"MyDVD 6.2 will edit and transfer TiVo files to DVD. One critical problem but I have a workaround for you.", As of March 2007, I have been using MyDVD 6.2 to transfer TiVo files to a DVD for one year. It is an excellent product except for one MAJOR FLAW - it crashes when you try to save, but I have found a way around that. Read on.

As I alluded to in the title, this review is for MyDVD 6.2 -- apparently Amazon doesn't sell 6.2 but if you have TiVo, you're probably wondering if you should buy this. To my knowledge, Sonic / Roxio MyDVD 6.2 is the only software that will transfer TiVo files to a DVD. Despite what some reviewers say (and they were probably reviewing 5.2), the product does deliver what it promises. Namely, it's incredibly easy to use and it does the job. I have burned dozens, perhaps hundreds, of DVD's already and they look beautiful and professional. It inserts chapter points, transitions (dissolves, wipes, fades, etc.) and animated icons on the menus -- just like a movie DVD that you might buy at the store.

HOWEVER, it has one CRITICAL DEFECT. I have found that 95% of the crashes happen at one very inconvenient juncture... after you've done your editing work and you press OK. If Sonic / Roxio would fix this, the product would be perfect, but since they haven't it gets 2 stars. See the TIP below and it will work flawlessly for you as it does for me.

Finding and editing out commercials and applying simple transitions takes me about 1 minute per 2 or 3 minutes of footage. It then takes hours for the computer to master and burn a DVD. If you keep it to 1.5 hours of video or less (SP setting), it's much faster. Try to cram 3 hours onto a single layer DVD and, not only will the video quality will s*ck, but it will take all night (or all day) for the computer to chew on it. I have learned that this turnaround time is common for DVD mastering, no matter what software or super-fast computer you're using.

I bought MyDVD 6.2 after reading all the bad reviews and using the demo for 2 weeks. In between the demo and buying 6.2, I bought Pinnacle Studio 10.5 I got very frustrated with it, because it's overly complicated. I couldn't even find how to divide the video into chapters. I gave up on Pinnacle and bought the easy to use, yet slow MyDVD 6.2 with the single acute weakness.

TIP: After editing out commercials (or other unwanted footage) from your video, BEFORE you press OK, select a segment that is longer than 60 seconds. Press the play button in the preview area and let it run for 6 seconds, no more and no less. Press pause. WAIT SIX TO TEN SECONDS then press OK. Don't touch anything or move the mouse; be patient and say a prayer. Usually this will keep the program from crashing. Don't do this and it will probably get stuck and you'll lose your work from the last time you saved, not to mention that you may need to reboot the pc. When you get to the main screen, press Save Project. Let out a sigh of relief.

TIP #2: Instead of burning directly to DVD, do File - Save as disc image... This will put the mastered DVD on your hard drive, ready to burn to disc. You then use Nero or some other DVD burning software to transfer the program to disc. If you want more than one copy, this will save you a LOT of time. Since it separates the mastering process from the disc burning process, it is a lot safer too.


"Sonic MYDVD was free for me, and I would give it back if I could", I got the Sonic software pre-loaded onto my laptop, and frankly it is not worth the space that it consumes on my hard drive. I have attempted to burn a DVD 4 seperate times. 2 times I have been successful, 2 times I have received errors.

It is painfully slow (expect about a 4 hour burn time for one hour of DVD play time), and it completely locks up your machine for that time period. Start it up, let it run, and take a nap.

Perhaps the most painful part is that on my two failed attempts, the errors that eventually shut down the whole process didn't happen until hour number 3 of the burn process. Ahhh, good times.

"DON'T BUY THIS PROGRAM", YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. BUGS & POOR SUPPORT IS WHAT YOU WILL GET

Stay away from ALL Sonic Solutions products. Get Ulead Systems DVD Workshop 2 instead

"Full of bugs. Not worth the time wasted.", I have used MyDVD 5.0 and 5.2 for the past 8 months. The program is full of bugs. Support is virtually non existent. Web site only wants to SELL you upgrades to fix known bugs.

You will waste valuable hours of you time (as well as money) if you buy this program

"Full of bugs. A piece of junk.", It is hard to believe that this is version 5.2 of Sonic MyDVD. I say that because: How could you get to such a high version number and still have such a buggy product with such ugly menus? The only thing that you probably want this program to do is to make a menu for your DVD. Unforturnately it is even bad at that. Sometimes you can't change the labels under the buttons -- you click on the text in edit mode and nothing happens. The buttons are always stuck in the same place. Often the button label (text) overlaps a button in a way that looks like an error. This also looks like a bug to me: If you try to change the label on the first chapter button the program also changes the menu title of the DVD. Huh? You will waste hours of your time. Even at this low price you should expect much better.
