"Good, but limited in breadth - get the Guide to Birds of NA instead", Peter, I love that you rated your own product! Anyways, this CD-Rom is good, but I would invest the extra money and get the Guide to Birds of North America instead, so you have access to all the birds of NA and not just one region. I have written a more extensive review for that product. As I wrote there, the two issues I have with this software is (1) the audio is short and does not include calls or song variations for many birds and, to a much lesser degree, (2) some species could use more photos. Having said that, I'm really glad I have the complete guide after having used the regional one to learn my birds before field research (I recommend Stokes CDs for audio though). The quizz option is great. Also, the complete guide includes the Birder's Handbook, whereas the regional guide does not.

"Birds of My Region v3.9", Birds of My Region is one of 71 birding titles offfered by Thayer Birding Software. This is the top-rated birding software and is used in many universities, nature centers and museums to teach bird identification.

Birds of My Region is a special "subset" of the full Guide to Birds of North America v3.9. When you install it you are asked to select one of ten different regions or you may also select any one state or any one province. You will then see just those birds from that region (or state/province).

Another reviewer of Birds of My Region has some errors in his review. This software does NOT require a registration. It does NOT require a password. (Very old versions of this software did require registration, however).

I am the president of Thayer Birding software, so this is a bit biased, but at least it is accurate.


"Keep going", This software is not worth it.

First, it requires that you register the software, including e-mail and street address. You cannot proceed until its been registered. It will give a "Stop Command Encountered" error message and close. Furthermore, if you don't use the product for more than 30 days, you have to re-register it. If you tell it to print the letter and there's no printer attached to your machine, it closes.

Second, its a lie - you cannot select a region, only a state. I live in Northern VA, close to DC. The selections are for VA or DC. That's it.

Next, it presents you with a list of birds in your state. If you want to find a bird, youo have to use the "wizard". This feature starts out OK, (its why I bought the software in the first place) asking about various identifiers such as coloring (choose as many as you need) habitat, etc. But once you've input all the information, the only option is to save the "list" for a "quiz" later. There's no explanation of why you would want to do this, or how this allows you to to narrow down your search.

The "Help" just plain doesn't. It carefully explains that you can save your "list" for use in a "Quiz" later. Very frustrating.

I tried to use this to ID a hawk I spied in my back yard. Ditto for a little gray bird that was very aggresive, and a couple of other smaller birds. I gave this software a number of chances. In each case, I went back to my good friend, Peterson's Field Guide.

If you're looking for a good, interactive, educational, and easy to use program to enhance your enjoyment of your backyard feeder, keep going. This isn't it.
