"Oustanding DVD Documentary"
I'm a big WW2 fan, but you do not be another one to consider this DVD's as great.

PROS: To write all the pros this series has i think you won't finish reading. So, i'll try to set what i consider the mainly. (1) This series shows an objective angle of WW2 (including the German, British, Russian, Japanese and US). (2) It has a balance between interviews and not interviews scenes. (3) Gives importance to the most relevance matters that days. (4) The coverage is amazing. (5) It keeps far away a Hollywood's movie making.

CONS: The World at War would be perfect if it had subtitles. ¿why it does not? I wonder the same.

"If you like history, you are going to love this item"
If you are a history fanatic, like my boyfriend is, you will get crazy about these CD's. Award winning, great series about the pre-war events, and the war seen from different perspectives. A must-have for all history fans.

"The definative WWII documentary"
I live in the USA now but spent the first 35 years of my life in the UK. I recall as a youngster this series airing on ITV on a Sunday morning. It is one of those memories engrained in my memory about what Sundays were all about.

Mom doing the laundry on a cold winters morning with the doors open and a freezing kitchen (for that is where most peoples washing machines are in Britain), the shouting and appealing of several pub soccer games being played out on the football fields behind our home, the smell of the Sunday joint slowly cooking on in the over, Jimmy Savile on BBC Radio 1 broadcasting his weekly Savile's Travels show , and the documentary series The World at War airing on the living room TV. As you can imagine, a series needed to pack a strong punch to be a part of someone's childhood memories and that is just what this series did.

From the script to the archive footage to the first class narration of Laurence Olivier, there is simply nothing to fault this show. Though some of the titling looks a little amateurish by modern standards, this only increases the feeling that you are taking part in a little piece of broadcasting history as you watch it.

The Second World War was the most important part of our history and helped define the world as it is now. There is no better way to study the events of 1939-1945 than to sit back and watch this documentary series. And if you want your children to have an unbiased and detailed education of the `last great war', I recommend you purchase this video set immediately.

I was something special to me to be able to sit and watch this series all over again and appreciate the horror sacrifice our forebears lived through and made in order for us to enjoy the freedoms we all take for granted today.

"Grim. Absolutely grim. The real story."
When I was a kid I was taken by the tales of courage and bravery that the movies and books feed people. I read about the fighter pilots and the Commandos. War was all excitement and friends looking out for friends.

Then one day the theme music of The World at War came on, the program launched straight in to archive footage of real battles, all the horror of mangled and mutilated bodies. I was mesmerized and that was the end of my warm and fluffy view of warfare. You only need to see a little bit of the real horror of war to know that it's not something good.

As I watched the series I saw the terrifying assault on the world, the invasions and destruction, the displaced people and the dead. Germany and Japan sweeping over the face of the earth spreading fear and disaster. Then they were held and pushed back. But there was no great joy in the victories, they came at too high a cost. And yet in the end it had to be done and was worthwhile. But at what a terrible cost. This is one of the very few places you will see that cost.

This production pulls no punches and Olivier, as a former member of the Fleet Air Arm, probably brings the true emotion of personal loss to this production, as well as his amazing voice. A modern voice might have trouble appreciating what it was really like to be involved in the desperate struggle of a World War.

Now, so many years later, people forget. So I am buying this to casually watch while my 15 year old does her homework. So she'll get a less sterile view of history and maybe learn why my teachers were so utterly grim. I was taught by men who had fought through North Africa and Italy, who landed in France on D-Day and who slogged through the jungles of Burma. People need to know what it was really like and this is as good a way as still exists now that most of the veterans are old or dead.

"never forget"
this should be required in every school everywhere. everyone should know these things so as to not repeat it. very thorough. got it for my favorite war history buff. he loves it. and i have learned much.

What our customer's say!

"Gift", Gave these dvd's to a friend for Christmas. He loved them. He's a bit of a history buff...all eras, and said that some of the footage in these, blew him away:)

"Complete History of World War II", This set is a complete history of World War II from Europe to the Pacific. The video and commentary are spectacular! Time Life's t.v. advertisement offers 4 discs for nearly the same price as this complete set of 11 discs! Amazon provides a great buy.

"perfect gift!", I bought this as a Xmas present for my fiance & he LOVES it. He raves about it every time he watches one of the segments. With 11 DVD's it's going to take him a while to get through it & he seems to be enjoying every moment.

"What else can be said. Its the best WWII doc made.", As my title states, there not much more that can be posted about this documentary series. Its wonderfully made...loaded with footage and first hand accounts from all major war participants. I really enjoyed this set, particularly the interviews with Stephen Ambrose, Traudl Junge, etc. Highly recommended, of course, if you have even a lukewarm interest in history or, more specifically, the history of WWII. I would have liked to have seen a little more coverage on the workings and makeup of the SS in particular...though the set does examine Hitler's Germany in fairly good detail and what conditions allowed for such a regime to be created and ultimately take hold of the country.

"very well made..", video is very high quality, DVD appears to be mastered from the original BBC series footage, unlike lots of other WWII DVD (television) offers that look like they were copied from a VCR playing back in EP mode (complete with head switching noise, flagging, tape wrinkle noise). My only minor complaint is that they should've made it so you could play through all 4 episodes (i.e. "Play all") on the disks.

"The World at War 30th Anniversary Edition", The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)
I have purchased many DVDs about WW2 and this one sits near or at the top of the list. The 50 minute episodes make it easy to keep track of the many events during WW2. The episodes are interesting and informative. The series has excellent footage and the narration by Sir Laurence Olivier is top notch. The recent price reduction really makes it an exceptional value. I think it is a "must" purchase for any WW2 or history buff.

"The Easiest Way To Give Up REALITY TV", This should be required viewing for each and every "next" generation. You come away with a very good idea about the human cost of war, the folly of war, the stupidity of war and the horror of war. Very complete in its coverage, not just the holocaust. The actual film footage from the era is absolutely fascinating (alot of it in color). Just a great documentary. Lots of extras over and above the original episodes. And the price is right.

"The World at War five DVD set", Just as I expected. I am familiar with this program as it was presented in serial form on TV some years ago, and I always wanted my copy. This compilation may have been edited, updated and expanded from the TV version, but I am very satisified with the final result. Program uses World War II film footage which obviously varies in initial picture quality; this is understandable. Video presentation of the end result is excellent. All DVDs play on my equipment with no problems.

"A Classic Documentary", This 1970's documentary is a great classic. Great footage and editorial comment by a number of historians as well as the combatants from all sides of the conflict. While this British produced piece shows a lot from the Anglo perspective, it really does have a good balance covering the war in it's entire scope. If you like a flag flying, victory by sheer might type of story, this is probably NOT the documentary for you.
If you want to get the "feel" of the war from the London blitz to the siege of Stalingrad to the beaches of the Pacific, you'll like this terrific classic piece.

"The World at War 30th Anniversary Edition", I first knew of "The World at War" in re-runs through cable TV. I had seen bits and pieces but never watched any one episode. When I became interested in studying the Second World War, I decided to purchase this DVD set.

To me, what is important in any documentary, is not only the footage of the war itself but also the interviews from people who lived during that particular period. At the time that this documentary was made, many who lived through the events of the Second World War were still alive in 1974. The World at War contains a wealth of information through personal interviews given by the politicians of the U.S., and Great Brittan, soldiers from the U.S., Japan, Great Brittan and Germany and the citizens of these countries. A few who lived through the holocaust were also present to tell their stories. Even former members of Hitler's S.S. were interviewed as well as Hitler's personal valet and his 22 year old secretary, Traudl Junge.

This documentary covers all areas of World War II and contains extensive footage of battles both at home and abroad.

The DVD set contained all 26 regular - 50 minute long episodes and 12 hours of bonus material.

The bonus material contained two 90 minute programs of "Hitler's Final Solution", one 90 Minute program of "Hitler's Germany" and a 45 Minute Interview of Hitler's secretary. Extended footage of German citizens, soldiers and high ranking officials was also included. One episode entitled, "The Two Deaths of Adolph Hitler" interviewed people who were trying to determine if the charred remains that they examined was really that of Adolph Hitler.

Many of the interviews in the bonus material, as well as war footage, is repeated from the original episodes but contained additional footage not seen in the regular episodes. Sir Laurence Olivier narrated the 26 episodes. Eric Porter narrated some of the bonus material.

2 additional programs covering the making of The World at War were also included.

For someone wanting a complete and thorough look at all sides of WWII, this DVD set is a must and is suitable for most audiences.
