"Paranoia and Gore - On Ice!" More exiting than the vague title would suggest, J. Carpenter's infamous gore-fest is a finely crafted thriller featuring some of the most bizarre make-up effects ever captured on celluloid.
Situated in a remote arctic research facility, the film follows Kurt Russel and his colleagues as they battle against an extraterrestrial horror they inadvertently unearthed from a glacier.
This 'thing', whatever it is, can take any shape it wants, leading to frequently bloody creature transformations. As the movie progresses the creatures get weirder and more grotesque, an impressive feat considering that it was accomplished without any computer special effects.
The relative lack of cheesy dialogue and complete absence of female nudity (or females altogether) are notable departures from the standard format of the genre. This gives the film more time to explore the evolution of suspicion and paranoia between the researchers, as well as the desperate acts of self-preservation that ultimately result.
An excellent film with very few weak moments. A worthy 'collectors' edition with tons of extras including an 80 minute making of movie, commentary, deleted scenes and more! Highly Recommended.
"Thing" Movie scared me to death as a child. now kind of cheesy but still cool. the scene where they are all tied up together on chairs and one of them turns out to be the thing....way scary. I would have the same reaction they did, like, Oh,#$%@!!!!! in hd the quality is good. not much for bonus features. still highly enjoyable.
"A Classic !" Ive seen this flick a hundred times... but never in the threatre. Bought it for me brother for his b-day. We watched it on his new 60" 1080P plasma from about 6' back. The video was a bit grainy, and the blacks were a bit washed out in a couple scenes, but the sound was very clean. All that aside - what really matters is that I was totally involved in this movie; almost like seeing it again for the first time. Stan Winston's wizardry was as stunning and seemless as my best memories of it. C.G. can look phony or dated (!) on the new high rez formats, but the best of the tried and true old school methods still kick butt! Highly recommended for fans of the genre. If you haven't seen this movie before GET IT! You won't be disappointed.
"Its just about which cover you prefer" I like this cover (the one with the man with no face) better than the other cover (the face covered in snow). Its just a better cover, the other one sucks. Both DVDs are essentially the same. I cant find a deep difference. Just pick the cover that you liek best. Other than that, this is one of the most claustophobic movies you'll ever see. Its really one of the scariest I've seen. Watch it by yourself in the dark for a better effect. Especially if you've never seen it before. I give the film a perfect 10.
"Classic!" This movie's amazing. Definitely Carpenter's best work. You can NOT miss this...it set a bar for sci fi horror that still stands today.

What our customer's say!
"Don't take Anything with you", When I first saw this movie,it was a sneak preview with the premiere of Blade Runner, another Sci-Fi classic.I had gone to the movie alone, with my friend "Laughing Sam's Dice"...ok?Anyway,I was just melting into my seat in total connection with the first feature, and in all honesty partway into The Thing, for the first time in my movie career,I walked out,sat in the parking lot trying to compose myself to drive home.I have to consider this like an award level!Present day movie-goer's would consider it differently, the perspective I dealt with was beyond anything that had been released.Anyway,I had to go back, this time,I took my friend Mary Jane, and had a slightly calmer experience that I was able to enjoy to the end without entrails turning into tentacles leaving the screen, and crawling up the aisles, and enveloping the audience..... yeah like that, trust me,you didn't want to be there!Today it's a cult classic in the household, usually involves a nostalgic discussion of the details of my first experience.Have you ever been experienced?Well I was.
"A Remake That's Almost Better Than The Original", In 1982 John Carpenter remade one of the all time great, Sci-fi/Horror films"The Thing".This remake was in many ways scarier than the original, due to the way the creature could shape itself perfectly, like it's victim.A lot of paranoia, and A scary sense of not knowing true identity, also made this film scarier than the original. It has some great special effects, and A wonderful ensemble cast including Kurt Russell,Wilfred Brimley,Keith David,Richard Dysart, and David Clennon. What keeps this film from being 5 stars,is the film has more gore, than heart. That Being said ,it may not be as good as the original, but it's still very entertaining, and quite exciting. I highly recommend this to fans of horror/sci-fi films, and fans of Kurt Russell, and or John Carpenter.
"still scary", I was seven years old and forbidden to watch this movie. My parents went out and I watched it with the babysitter. Couldnt sleep for weeks and it remains one of only two movies ever to truly scare me. The other was a vincent price horror that I also wasnt supposed to watch. Its was so weird seeing it again 25 years later and I can see why a seven year old would be terrified.
"It's a GOOD THING. It has some good suspense. Worth watching once.", I was impressed and pretty scared when I first watched it on VHS a long time ago. However when I watched it again a couple of years ago, I found it not as good as Aliens 2. It still have some good suspenseful moments. The special effects are not as good as those of Aliens 2.
It's definitely worth watching once.
"The Thing", You never know who or what The Thing is! This movie is extremely creepy! Youve got to watch this with someone! A young Kurt Russell plays a very brave guy trying to help everyone. The Thing is too fast though and keeps taking control over things! Watch this terrifying tale!

"Remastered & an awesome ride", The old version of "The Thing" was grainy and dark. This new remastered version is almost like watching a new movie. the creepiness remains, but you can actually make out details in the environment and the twisted monsters that weren't there before. Highly recommended for John Carpenter fans, people who enjoyed "30 days of night", and anyone else who enjoys a combination of intense psychological stress and gory monsters with Kurt Russell at the helm.
""I know Im human..."", This has to be one of the very best science fiction movies ever made. It is pure atmosphere/mystery/horror from the unusual opening to the ambiguous ending. A group of isolated scientists in Antarctica encounter an alien species that can literally duplicate in almost exacting detail any other animal. Carpenter had the guts to make John Campbell's original novella 'Who Goes There?' quite literally and the effect is astonishing. The cast is terrific, led by Kurt Russell, and the creature effects are much more effective than any CGI. It has an organic look to it that today's CGI simply doesnt achieve. After watching this film, you will be constantly questioning certain events and of course the ending, an ending most movies today would never pull off. The commentary by Carpenter and Russell is the best I have ever heard. The making of documentary is superb and the other extras are great, along with a very chilling theatrical trailer. I cannot recommend this film and dvd enough. It is a masterpiece.
"There is a Thing", The thing is by far one of the greatest horror movies ever made, it's one hell of a paranoia Trip
I wish they'd go back to the style of animation and effects they used in this movie. They are a little outdated yes but atleast the actors had something to work with instead of it all being digitally edited in later..
"Is intelligence enough?", This film is a sort of Matrix for many modern films about aliens. It has antecedents for sure but they did not have enough special effects and big enough budgets enabling them not to show the zipper in the back of the monsters. The original element is the location: the Antarctica. A place that has been re-used since by a certain Predator when he met with some Aliens of a more recent generation. There, if an alien life form that can penetrate any living organism and take it over completely appears it can disrupt any human group so much that they will self destroy in order to destroy the alien thing forgetting that anyway the alien form can survive even centuries of glaciation because it is not human or animal and hence it is not even sensitive to cold. The alien is always the winner and it will sooner or later manage to learn how to be patient, penetrate a living organism and stay rampant in it long enough to be taken to real society, to millions of people concentrated in small areas That's the idea of the film. And it ends the way it has to end. Two apparently human beings are still alive. One is contaminated, probably not two, but they are going to die of cold in their human form, their human organism. Carpenter even makes one black and the other white and the circumstances he uses makes the black one dubious, suspicious, whereas the white one seems to be the normal one, but who really knows? The alien or aliens will go dormant in the cold, in hibernation. There is no escape, no end. Our human world is bound to be taken over not by more intelligent beings but by biologically more advanced life forms. And we may wonder if our intelligence will be enough to compensate for the handicap.

"Utterly amazing HD transfer", Rather than review this excellent movie itself (you can find many reviews online for this great remake), I'm reviewing the HD transfer.
Now I'm no HD expert, not up on all the jargon and numbers. What I do know is I really like Carpenter's interpretation of The Thing and I've watched it many times over several format changes; from the darkness of a beat down old cinema 26 years ago, to VHS then DVD and ultimately now on HD DVD. And this transfer is by far the most amazing showcase of the now defunct HD DVD format yet - and also highlights how groundbreaking the effects in The Thing were.
When the movie begins you can instantly tell that you're witnessing clarity like never before. The opening sequence where the Norwegians are chasing the dog is crystal clear, almost giving off a 3D effect. My memory of this film was tainted from years of watching my VHS copy; the bleached and blended white hills, skyline and snowy horizon was once just basically all the same bleeding white on screen. But this has been replaced by mountain detail, clouds, snow texture and actual snowflakes falling! I had no idea it was snowing during that scene, but now each flake is visible.
The special effects also look amazing. I was worried the increased detail may reveal aged and outdated fx, but the various 'thing' transformations look even better with blood now horrific red, and no longer looking like a few buckets of pasta sauce thrown over the actors.
The sound has also been given the treatment and the windy noise of the creaking camp immerses the listening perfectly. Can't fault the sound at all.
So all in all, the audio/visuals of this film are complimented by the HD format releasing a new lease of life into this movie. By seeing each snowflake, goosebump, cold ruddy weathered face, and of course the agonized torn flesh, this transfer allows the viewer to feel like they're there in that camp...
Feeling very paranoid, very cold and very much alone.
100% a must for HD DVD owners.
