"Prints Like A Dream!"
I have had this printer for years and I just bought another one as a gift. Get them where you can......great for printing pictures as well. Epson makes a fine product.

"Epson Stylus C86"
There should be a specific cleaning cartage. The built in cleaning
method does not seem to work.

"Poor text print quality -- and there are better photo printers"
I owned HPs for years, and then someone told me that HP's quality had gone down and that Epson was the way to go. I'd always sworn I'd avoid Epsons because they seem to have lines through the print images -- but I went on faith.

Bad idea. This is the worst printer I've ever had. I can't print text without lines through it. Doesn't matter how many times I clean the nozzles, and it doesn't matter if they're new ink cartridges. Since this is my everyday printer (and I'm a writer), that's a big problem for me.

If you print a color photo at highest quality with good Epson paper, you'll get a really nice image, but image and photo printing are your goal, you're better off with a dedicated photo printer. (I have an Epson R200 that I'm happy with -- it cost me the same amount as this printer and does a nicer job with photos.)

If I ask the printer to treat my text documents like high-quality photos, I get better text, but someone else said it extremely well -- as a result, they guzzle ink like SUVs guzzle gas, and the cartridges do dry out quickly.

I haven't owned an HP in years, so I can't make any recommendations there. I can only warn you against buying this printer, and suggest the R200 or a comparable Epson if you're looking for a photo printer. Good luck!

"Avoid Epson like the plague!"
This is my third Epson, and with its untimely death I've finally accepted the painful truth: Epson printers produce wonderful results... WHILE THEY WORK. And, unfortunately, they don't work for long. There's a reason Epson is no longer the #1 printer maker. This is the third Epson that died on me after about a year of use. All of them died of the Clog From Hell disease, but whilst the first two at least continued printing something (so I could use it to print throwaway drafts and such), this one just keeps spitting out blank pages at me. Replacing the cartridges doesn't work, running nozzle cleaning cycles doesn't work, NOTHING works. And did I mention that Epson printers downright refuse to print if one of the color inks is low, even if you're only looking to print black-and-white? I see no point in having to replace a cartridge if I'm not going to use it. Except, perhaps, to suck more money out of your customers.

So, after $120-worth of wasted ink and paper and enough stress to last me for the next decade, I'm finally saying goodbye to Epson. Its printers can make wonderful prints, but they just aren't reliable. If you don't mind having to replace your printer every year or so, AND spend a fortune on cartridges in the meantime, then by all means buy an Epson. Otherwise, RUN AWAY and don't look back!

"Best printer ever"
I bought this as a close out at Radio shack for $49.00 year later works like a charm INK is so cheap for Ebay knock offs its sick..If you buy Epson ink cartridges your pretty much a dope. i guess for Office archive work you might want the Durabright But when you can buy like a dozen Cartridges on ebay for $20.00 man oh man..No other ink is so cheap for knock offs...

What our customer's say!

"Good for a short time only before nozzles clog ", The Epson Stylus C82, C84, and C86 are good for a short time only, maybe one year tops when purchased new. Then, the nozzles clog, the printer becomes useless junk. Epson no longer will repair these old models.
This creates a problem for those of us using older computers like my Apple imac OS 8.6, as there are no longer any printers available that work with these old computers.

"Piece of Junk Printer", This price is WAY too much for this printer...I paid $200 brand new and it broke within 6 months. What a piece of junk.

"This model is a lemon", I agree with the previous reviews. I never liked the way the paper fed into the printer but it gave quick sharp print jobs...until I had to replace the ink. After that it was all down hill. Thought it might be the ink so bought more. Nothing. Had a friend who works with and repairs printers look at it. After he tried everything he could he admitted defeat. THEN I looked up these reviews.....a lesson learned!

"Read Ian Madfed's Review - Same here!!!", To the letter, my review matches up with Ian's and I had the same thing happen with my C82 which I got Epson to replace with the C86. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but unless you want a disposable ink vaccum, I recommend that you look elsewhere for an inkjet printer.

"Great Until It Just Dies", AVOID THIS EPSON PRINTER. It works well until you need to replace ink cartridge. Then it fails. And when it fails, it is not just a minor problem... you get nothing but blank sheets, as ink tubes clog up. Epson recommends buying new ink, which does not work. No solution except Trash Bin or Epson repair service that costs more than buying a new printer. In fact, when you call their help line, the operator recommends purchasing another as a cheaper solution... and they will give you a $10 "loyalty discount". All the other reviews are right. This is a great printer if you want something that lasts only a few months. If you want it to work past warranty... choose another.

"What an awful printer!", I print out maybe 10 pages a month and in the year or so that I've owned this printer, I've already changed the printer cartridge twice. Since cartridges are expensive it's not worth my while to continue using this printer. It also has this awful habit of printing out every other line when the ink cartridge is running low. It's so frustrating because the print quality is quite good when it does work. But such a high-maintenance printer causes nothing but headaches in the long run.

"C82 - 1.5 yrs. C86 - 1.5 yrs. I see a pattern.", DO NOT BUY EPSON PRODUCTS. That's what I learned. Here's why: I agree. Epson? Greedy company. I used to have the C82, for 1.5 yrs. Then I used non-Epson ink once. Boom, printer stops printing. Channels dried out. Junkyard. Epson was so kind to send me a C86 for free instead, so I was quite pleased. Only drawbacks at the time were offline time, $60 I had just invested in new (generic) cartridges (to see if I could get the printer working again with the EPSON brand ink but no) and of course the costly customer support phone (they charge you big $$$ for it). Anyway, the C82 was not available any more at the time (I now know why), so they got me the C86. I learned from the past and NEVER used non-Epson ink. Same result. Printer quits after 1.5 yrs. Only Cyan and Yellow still worked somewhat, Black and Magenta stopped. So now what? I read all the reviews here and thought 'Hey, I got an idea, I will buy another C86 at the local store, then return the new box with the old printer in it after 2 weeks for a full refund. Then Epson shall deal with their crappy product.' Not morally 100% correct, but selling such a product to me and millions of others isn't either, now is it? So guess what, the C86 (hmmmm, just like the C82 at the time) wasn't available anymore. Instead they had the C88+. Nah, I thought, not again. I'm an engineer, so why not try to fix it myself and then if necessary switch to an HP (LIKE 117 OTHERS THAT WROTE A REVIEW HERE!). So I popped off all the panels of the C86 until I got to the core. Two side panels, main panel, rear panels, all got easily removed. Snap in/snap out design, so that's good. A bit more tricky was getting to the actual print head. But I managed. That thing is cast together with a electronic chip, some ICs and whatnot, but I could already see it was all cluttered up with old ink. I cleaned everything, and put it back together as good as possible. Took me overall 3 hrs. Result: it got worse. Lost Yellow and Blue too. Guess what my reaction was? Ever seen OFFICE SPACE?? Today I got myself an HP Deskjet 3940. What's good about it, it cost me only $15 at my local Meijer store (somebody had returned it without the ink and USB cable) and the ink cartridges come with the print head. The print head is not part of the printer. So each time you get new cartridges (where the HPs are even cheaper than the EPSONs), you get new printheads too. With the EPSON, once the printhead is cluttered up with old ink, you're done. I guess this happens after roughly 1.5 yrs with every EPSON. I will try to post an image of the disassembled printer to the photos here, let's see if it goes through. Have fun with your C86! Enjoy it, as long as it still works...

"I will never buy another epson printer", I got the c86 to replace a c82(?) that bit the dust after 14 months or so. This one lasted longer, and I always replace with "Epson brand inks" but the last 2 times I changed the black ink, I had to do the clean print heads 10 or 15 times to get black, and today, I can't get any black ink to come out at all. I give up, Epson. Canon, here I come.

"Great until it stopped working at 14 months", And labor is so expensive, most shops want $50 just to open it up! My Stylus 740 never had this problem, although the 740 is not a photo printer. At ~$200 it needs to perform better, longer.

"AVOID AT ALL COSTS!", We bought 8 Epson C86 printers because the color reproduction was highly rated.
It does print decent color photos--while it still works. We had 1 at home and 7 for our office, all with light to medium usage and mostly in black and white. Each printer, on cue, failed within a year and a half, by first printing poorly, by not improving through cleaning or cartridge replacement and then by not printing at all. It sounds like it's printing, but no ink is transferred to paper. To fix these would cost as much as a new one. This is NOT a good value--they ALL break quickly....
