Others say...
"Nice SACD deck" So far seems to work fine. Haven't had a chance to try an SACD so far. But regular ones sound good. Pretty much what I expected.
"Floored by its sound quality on all CDs" I bought this to relieve a DVD player (Oppo DV-980H) of audio duties and to have a changer again. I've used a number of CD and DVD players over the years, but since 2001 when I bought my first Pioneer 5-DVD changer I haven't had a dedicated CD player in my set up. Most reports out there say DVD players make great CD players, and furthermore that the Oppo I own is a remarkable player and all that.
Well, after spending but a few weeks with this player I am convinced they're all wrong. For $150 (or $59 shipped from SonyStyle refurbished like I bought mine, that's right FIFTY NINE DOLLAR FOR A SACD CHANGER) this player reminded me why I used to buy so many CDs (lately I've been shopping for a lot more vinyl). It sounds great, and makes you want to crank it up. I'm not an audiophile - which should be very obvious as I'm raving about an inexpensive Sony CD player, but just to clarify: I'm not an audiophile.
If you're using a basic DVD player, or even a moderately nice one, this player will probably make all your CDs sound much more like they should. The remote is great, it's reasonably speedy with a bit of a slow read when first starting a CD, the changer is as quiet as I've heard... a very nice piece of reasonable electronics.
"Have had two in less than a year with same problem" I had always thought Sony was a good product until I purchased this unit. I have not had a working player for a total of one year. The first one stopped reading the CD, so the carousel would just spin around on random play and never stop. Sent it in, cost $10.00, but I received a refurbished replacement. Well it would have been a year in September that I have had that one, and guess what? Yep, carousel spins and spins. Sent it back, now I am being quoted $119.00 to repair/replace with probably another lemon. I see new CD players that cost less than that, I think I'll try a different brand. I'm reading other people's reviews. I'll still stick with Amazon. I think they do a good job. Glad to see them expanding into other products.
"Cheap but poorly designed" This changer takes forever to load a disc, on the order of 20 seconds. In shuffle mode there is also a long delay between songs. It is much, much slower than the Technics changer it replaced in my home. Also the mode selection is confusing and it can't be set to stay in "shuffle" mode even though that is where most users will want it. This was really not designed with a user in mind.
"CD Player" Certainly have found easier to use CD players. Very cumbersome to insert CDs. Probably would not buy the product again!

What our customer's say!
"Nothing beats it for the money ", I purchased two of these players - both through Sony as refurbished units. I got them at ridiculously low prices. In reading reviews it seems that you either love this machine or hate it based upon it's reliability. Some people got caught with defective units. I suspect that's why there are so many refurbished ones on the market from Sony.
In a nutshell I really like this player. With SACD's it has incredible sound, especially in multi-channel mode. This is how SACD was really meant to be listened to. With standard Redbook CD's, the sound is also very good. I'm sure you can find standalone CD players for a lot more money that sound better, but not at this price point. It uses 3 custom Burr Brown DAC's with 192khz sampling rates. Regarding SACD's, there isn't any competition at this price point. You either get this machine or you will pay a LOT more.
Here are a few things that annoy me about the player that made me only give it 4 stars. These are more minor quibbles than major problems. Again - this player is so cheap it is almost a throw away product.
#1. There is no power off or CD drawer open/close on the remote. (So you will get some exercise going back and forth) There also isn't a direct track access capability, but if you have another Sony remote with direct track access, it will work with this machine. #2. It is slow to initially start reading a disc. This could be a compromise for those that like disc to disc shuffle play. I don't, so it isn't a big deal to me. #3. Occasionally when playing an SACD it will drop out all sound for a few seconds. Others have reported this also. It doesn't do this very often, but it has done it twice on one of my machines. I haven't had the other one long enough to see if it will also display this problem. If it get's worse, I'll have to send it back to Sony for repair.
This machine has almost the same stuff inside as the more expensive 2000ES. (ES stands for "Elevated Standard") The CE595 uses the same audio board and same drive mechanism as the 2000ES; it just doesn't have all the bells and whistles. (Headphone jack, dedicated two channel output, gold jacks, etc.) It's also almost 1/3 of the price!
It has a good menu system to configure the player the way you want. For example, if you only have two speakers, you can set it up to default to 2 channel track mode when playing SACD's. I should also mention it has a handy jog/shuttle dial on the front that allows you to quickly access tracks or change menu items; just not on the remote. You also can change discs in the drawer while a CD continues to play. Very nice!
The directions are a little cryptic, but once you figure them out it is pretty straight forward.
If you have the ability to have a multi-channel speaker setup, I highly recommend picking this player up and getting some SACD's. The sound quality will blow you away. In my opinion SACD's won't be around forever and that's a shame. The sound quality is vastly superior to standard CD's.
This is an excellent player for the money. Yes, it has some quirks, but I can live with them for the incredible price.
Pick one up before they aren't made anymore! Heck at this price, pick a couple up in case one breaks. :)
"Pleased with my new Sony audio player", Found I could attach the machine to my radio. At first the controls were lconfused and the machine jumped from cd to cd but it must have been a problem with my inexperience as after two attempts, it worked fine. Really great machine. I can play twenty discs, five at a time, and it goes on and on unlike my past machine that played three and quit. I can spend an entire afternoon just listening to Anna Karinina with its twenty some discs.
I especially appreciated the advice and quick response I received from the manufacturer. Thanks to him, I'm very satisfied.
"Do not purchase this machine.", I have had this player for almost 2 years now, and it just started acting-up with the same problems as the other reviews. It first started skipping on the first tracks, and then would just stop mid-track. And now it won't read the discs at all. Knowing the hassle of repairs on any electronics, I decided to figure out the problem myself. I had it running perfect yesterday, but wouldn't read the discs again today. I guess I'm out $150, too, because I can't get it to do a thing. Apparently, the player has a major flaw and should probably be shelved by Sony.
I also agree that when it was working that it did seem to take forever to read the discs, therefore, shuffle is useless because you could wait up to 20 seconds for the next song. The remote is very limited. Thank god I kept the excellent remote from my old Sony player that I bought over 10 years ago which works with this one. I don't know why they don't just reuse that remote. I was never even able to find anything I listen to on SACD to even use that feature. Anyway, Sony really messed up on this one.
"Cheap!!!", I was never satisfied with this player--from the moment I hooked it up to the moment it crapped out less than a year after I paid for it. With electronic items I've discovered over the years that you get what you pay for. This is the last time I try to save a little money!!!
"Good sound, good value", My 17 year old Sony CD player started to get CD's stuck that required a good thump to get the door open. This new players is a good value and a perfect match for my "stack" set up. It's 1 inch deeper so it sticks out the back, but this is not seen.
Like other reviewers, I noted the brighter sound too. I would ask, how is it a piece of electronic gear can "mellow" with use? Dust? Heat? I understand wine and cheeses mellow, but I suspect in this case, it's the human ear adjusting to a brighter sound and that becomes the new norm.
No problems with this unit. I'm looking to buy more SACD's and since most of my collection is classical, I have some good choices. Either way, my current CD's sound the best in years.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Review of Sony SCD-CE595 5-Disc player", The clarity of sound is exceptional in this player. It has been somewhat difficult for us old fogies to learn to load the different discs, but no doubt those technically facile would have no trouble with this.
"Gotta Have it", I've got MINE...Git yer own.
Nice features... . . Gotta Fly... . . .
"Very Pleased", My husband and I were replacing and old (30 + years from college) stereo system. We had a new Denon receiver, also purchased on Amazon, and Bose 901 speakers. The last componant to purchase was this CD player. I researched on the internet for days and settled on this product. The price was great. The delivery was great. The hook up was easy. Fully satisfied.
"Sony Super audio CD player", Product performs as expected with normal CDs. It is very quiet and the controls are easy to understand. Music quality is good, not necessarily superior to other players I've owned. The changer itself works well and I've experienced no jamming of the CDs as I've had with other brands. I'd recommend it.
"Even Better Than Expected!", After considerable research and reading reviews, I decided to make the move to an SACD capable player. A few reviews had me nervous about its tendency to pause during play. This did happen for me once when I first set it up and once again a month later; a quick unplug and replug (it resets) took care of it both times and it has never happened again(6 months and counting). What sound performance! It really does improve the sound of regular CDs!! (Use the optical digital cable). When we first tried it with an old favorite CD, we were stunned by the better sound reproduction on a disk we were very familiar with. "How can it get any better?" THEN we played an SACD (using the 5 RCA cables hook-up) - wow. The detail and distinct sound reproduction is amazing, from Dylan or Elton to classical pipe organ (try the "Messiah" in SACD!) To be sure there are differences in disk; I disagree with another reviewer about 2 channel SACD. We use it when listening to a two channel set-up extension in a neighboring room. Sounds are more distinct and clear even in 2 channel SACD. I find this unit outperforms much more expensive units in CD or SACD mode; play it a lot and rediscover the sounds you've been missing on your CD collection. We found it to be even better than expected!
