"A good game, delivers what it promised"
I am writing my first Amazon review because I want people to know this is a good game for anyone looking to buy Railroads by Sid Meier and after reading the reviews deciding not to. Locomotion is now an old game designed on even older technology however it lets you 'play' at building and running your railroad. It is not a perfect step up from TT or TTD but it works great. Some of the bad reviews appear to have been written by people who played for an hour and then reviewed. Laying track is easy and intuative, you can rotate your screen view through 4 positions 360 degrees to see most angles necessary to build and play. The game has a huge scenario builder where you can design a whole game choose which locomotives, trucks, houses, buses, trams boats airplanes trees hills water etc you want to come available by year-set goals on how you can win and how long it will take to play. Anyone who complains they cannot succeed at this game is a fool, any game like this is going to be difficult for a week or 2 and usually easy after that although there are still a few scenarios i have not succeeded in. The game zooms in and out well does not have stunning 3d effects or great sound but both are adequate and the game is fun. PS I hated Railroad Tycoon 3 because they ruined the track laying and took away the detail game play, Locomotion gives you both without the fancy graphics.

"Great game"
My son is in love with this game, if you like the rct games, this is for you!! Highly recommend for boys who are train enthusiast!!

"Colin's Review"
The game was very fun. I gave it five stars because I could make alot of money.

"Don't bother"
I was a Transport Tycoon addict. I used to play the game for more than 10 hours a weekday, and even more in weekends. This game is by no means a sequel to TT. I didn't take the 1 star advices posted here before I buy this game and now I realize I wasted my money. Just don't waste your money and keep away. Buy something better or save it.

"A Disappointment, sadly."
I bought this because I was a long-time fan of Transport Tycoon and Transport Tycoon Deluxe, and I was thrilled to see an updated version of these classic games. Unfortunately, Locomotion fails to live up to the high standard of gameplay set by TTD. Granted, the graphics are much better, and the road and rail networks can be more complex, but the game still disappoints on a few levels.
1. I have trouble laying railroads that work. Somehow, I'll put track together that looks like it matches, but the trains can't negotiate it. If I want that kind of frustration, I'll go back to my HO trains.
2. The low-point of the original Transport Tycoon, and TTD, was the seriously brain-damaged Artificial Intelligence. The Computer players would level mountains and lay hundreds of squares of track to connect stations 5 squares apart. The computer players in Locomotion are nearly as bad.
3. The game does not have a sandbox mode. I still regularly play TTD because it allows you to generate a new, random scenario every time. This freedom means that the game always has something new to try. Locomotion locks you into certain pre-made worlds, with pre-determined goals to fulfill. I got bored with it very quickly.
So, in conclusion, I suggest that you dust off your old TTD cd, and get a copy of the TTDpatch to allow it to run on Windows 2000 or XP, and play that, rather than buying Locomotion.

"Not the best from Chris Sawyer", Please don't let the title of my review fool you. It's just my opinion.
Although I like strategy/tycoon simulators overall, this one has it's flaws, including tech support from Atari.
The main flaws I found annoying are the terrain management - it's a bit limited, though playable.
Or, when connecting 2 town(or whatever else), it's impossible to start a rail connection(or whatever connection you want) ABOVE the ground/town. It's ok to end the station above the town(you have the possibility to raise/lower a track, but not start). The Atari/Locomotion support team were kinda sucky about this and replied in an completly unprofessional manner.
Works on Vista Ultimate & XP, kind of processor consuming(like 50%; I have a P4HT) but that's ok, maybe it's Vista's fault.

"Takes some tinkering, but it's worth it", I bought this game as I was looking for a fun railroad game and, after trying out demos of Rail Tycoon, etc, I purchased Locomotion. If you've played any of the RCT games then you'll feel instantly at home, but whereas RCT was pretty simple right out of the box, Locomotion takes much more trial and error to get the basics down.

That being said a couple of hours of fiddling around will bring you up to speed quickly and that's when the fun begins. This is a game that will suck you in and keep you on the computer for 3 hours when your intention was to play for a half hour or so.

When you factor in the dirt cheap price it's a slam dunk as this game will pay you back many times over!

"I like locomotion", This game is fun and good, but i hate it that you have to fix the trains, buses, truck, and others.when the years go by all the working vehicles get old and break down then you have to put new vehicles,it is very disapointing while playing the game.

"why have you failed us, chris?", Unfortunately, this game isn't at all original, and is actually a backwards step in some regards, compared to Transport Tycoon. I can't believe so little changed in 10 years.

"Locomotion is a great blast from the past.", Locomotion is a 'spiritual sequel' to Transport Tycoon, although this DOES NOT MEAN it is exactly the same, simply with a graphics update. Loco holds its own as its own game. I've seen a number of reviews giving 5/5 and a number giving 1/5 - I strongly advise you try the demo prior to purchasing (Google it), as most players either love or hate Locomotion.

"No Steps Forward", I am a longtime fan of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, and I must say I am disappointed in this supposed sequel. It offers absolutely nothing that TTD doesn't have and in at least one way (i.e., the way of building tracks and roads) is a very frustrating step back. If you have TTD, don't even consider this. Instead look at openTTD, a free game (you must have the TTD for windows disk to install). If you don't have TTD and can't get it, I guess you won't know what you are missing, so I suppose you can get Locomotion. But if you fall into this category, and you find yourself playing locomotion and saying, "Why didn't the programmer do it this way?" know that the answer is he did do it that way, 10 years ago. This is a downgrade from TTD and I will never play this game as long as I have openTTD. A clear lack of effort on the part of Chris Sawyer.

"My most favorite computer game. Ever.", Before I begin this review, let me just say that I've been playing computer games for a very, very, very long time. I remember playing the original "Pong" and "Space Invaders" in bowling alleys and restaurants, and had the original Atari home gaming console with a wide variety of games. When I got my first PC in 1990, I immediately began buying and playing whatever games I could. Right now, we have well over 150 computer games in our home that we play on our three PC's, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo64, NintendoDS, and Dell PDA. We play everything from the latest EA Sports title to turned-based strategy games, to simulators of every kind.

All that being said, Chris Sawyer's "Locomotion" is my absolute favorite computer game of all-time, and I play it more often than all my other games and systems COMBINED!

So how can a simple transportation strategy "tycoon" type game be so good? Simple: the game is kept simple, but can be played for hours on end without a hint of boredom. Easily the most addicting game I've ever played.

Locomotion is a deceptively simple game: build a railroad track from one town to the next (or one industry to the next), buy a train to run on it, then begin to expand your transportation empire from there. If you do a good job setting up your first rail line, you will begin to accumulate cash that you can spend building more lines, and even roads and airports! The catch is you are given a very small amount of money when the scenario starts, usually just enough for a short rail line, two stations, and a small train. The setting up of your first rail line is crucial in winning any of the scenarios.

The graphics are very simple, but detailed enough to get the job done. Basically you are limited to a bird's eye view of the territory/map given to you to play. You can zoom in or out in fixed increments, and rotate the view to see the map from the four cardinal directions: north, south, east and west. The map is laid out in a grid/hex fashion, and like most grid-based games is limited in terms of it's graphics and shapes. But don't let the simplistic graphics fool you! The game play is fantastic, and the limitations imposed by simple graphics actually make the game more challenging.

One of my favorite scenarios is a training map called "Weather World." It is an island nation based very loosely on Great Britain, complete with classic British trains! "Weather World" starts off without any tracks, ships, planes or trucks, but it does have a lot of towns that need transportation assets. I usually begin by laying a small rail line between town adjoining towns, then let a train run on that line in order to accumulate cash to lay down more tracks and roads.

The "Weather World" scenario begins in the year 1950, and your choice of trains and transportation is limited to those that would have existed at that time in the UK: LMS "Black Fives," LNER A4's, BR "Class 4MT's", and even 0-6-0T Jintys! I usually buy a Jinty and an old celestory roofed coach for my first train, and build from there.

You can also build roads and trolley lines, and are allowed to buy trucks, buses, and trolleys to run on their respective routes, which you get to set up. Once you master ground transport, you can also buy and build airports and ships. I enjoy running the trains so much I don't usually bother with the road's and airports, but do play with them from time to time.

If there is a down-side to this game, it's a lack of help in figuring out transportation strategies to win the various scenarios. You really need to spend a good amount of time in the beginner scenarios to learns all the in & outs of the game. Someone looking for instant gratification will be very disappointed, as you will not be able to win even the easiest scenarios without a good deal of time spent training (no pun intended.) It is a simple game, but not an easy one!

So why do I like this game so much? Because ALL the scenarios are open-ended. That means that once you win, you can keep on playing for as long as your heart desires! I've literally played one scenario for weeks on end, even though I won it within the first hour! I so enjoyed setting up and managing tracks, roads and airports, I didn't want to go on! So I just kept playing and playing, until almost every inch of the scenario map was filled.

Yes, as with every game I've encountered, Mr. Sawyer could have done some things better, especially in the area of options and customizations. Yet despite these minor limitations, I have never had so much fun playing on the computer in my life! Locomotion is worth every dollar, and probably the absolute best money I've spent on entertainment in my life.

"Very Derivative", This game offers almost nothing beyond what "Transport Tycoon" had. There are no VR effects, few changes to the economic engine, and it's buggy as heck.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

"Good When It Works", I became addicted to Locomotion, with a few reservations. But it suddenly stopped working (Problem with Loco.exe, contact Microsoft). Bought a second, after installation had problems then stopped working. Tech support has no idea about the cause. I wonder how many buyers have this problem (which showed up after MS-XP upgrade was installed)? It seems to be a rental program, works for a while then needs a new copy. Save your money.

"Addictive fun, especially for train lovers", My older son has never been a computer game fan---he liked Roller Coaster Tycoon a bit, but mainly just the train and tram parts! However, this game was an INSTANT hit for him. It combines the fun of making tracks to your fancy that RCT offers, along with the wide variety of trains and trams that train lovers crave. I tried it, and although I'm not a train person, it also had enough going to keep me playing longer than I should! It's addictive trying to get the trains to carry cargo to the different factories that need it, and trying to get boats and planes to make a profit.

A few things to note---this isn't for lovers of fancy graphics. It looks okay, but it isn't 3-D or anything that will blow you away in the looks department. It also isn't super hard---which is a plus for me and for my son. I get so tired of games that would be fun to play if you could actually PLAY them and not get stuck at some early point and give up! When I say it's easy, I mean it's easy to pick up and play, and fairly easy to achieve early goals. It's not easy in that it's over in a minute---I think with all the randomization and the many, many different goals you could play for years!
