Others say...
"Intuit has destroyed Quicken" The reviewers that give this buggy product one star are absolutely correct. The greedy execs at Intuit have removed .qif support, so they can force banks and credit unions to pay a fee to them (my credit union refuses to do this, so no more importing of data there), sent their call centers/chat rooms to India, providing cheap, worthless support (complain loudly to these people via e-mail that you are fed up with jobs being sent overseas), and splattered ads all over the place to get more of your dollars to buy other Intuit products that will likely not work too well. One Step Update has never worked properly.
The only people benefitting are execs at Intuit, who make millions laying off countless workers here in the USA for crappy offshore support.
I am trialing Money 2006 and will probably switch over to that product.
"A Good product gone bad by corporate greed" You have read every one else's review and I agree. I loved 2002. It worked, I didn't need anything else, it was a good upgrade from 99 that I was currently using. I loved the graph of income and expenses on the front screen. I could down load data from my Bank, ect, ect. ect.............
Then to insure that intuit can stay in business they start to deactivate features and therefore sabotaging its own software to insure that you have to buy their newest product. Most companies rely on improving their product significantly so people want to upgrade (hence Quicken 99 to 2002 upgrade). I believe that this is an unforgivable business practice. But.....
I am a fan and long time user of quicken so I reluctantly bought 2005 for my home and 5 businesses.
INSTALLING I had problems installing on 2 of the 4 computers That I have attempted. Which resulted in calling customer support (read all reviews from Quickbooks 2005)
CUSTOMER SUPPORT Customer support is in India and their personnel also do customer support for HP, Dell Ect. So therefore they Are not experts in Quicken at all they simply look up solutions in a large Database on their computer and read them off to you. You could solve the problem yourself easier. Intuit hint (Give us access to you extensive Support Database and drop the customer support personnel) On hold time is too long (more than 20 Minutes) Was hung up on twice (had to start all over each time) I ended up solving my own problem. Customer Support costs money. I cannot believe that customer support charged me for their help in getting this new installation running correctly (especially when I didn't want to upgrade to 2005 anyways)
NETWORKING 2002 could be networked 2005 cannot. It will not read the data file if it is on another hard drive. It acts as if it is a new installation each time I open quicken on a different computer.
WEB CONNECT This is not a problem with only 2005 only but also with 2002. I can download the data from my bank. And lets say that I wanted to download the data to June 30, 2005. It will download the data that came in during that period of time, clear it in the reconciliation screen but when it trys to balance it uses todays Bank balance (July 6, 2005) to balance against instead of June 30th's balance.
In Short, Small Business really needs to have an accounting software company step up and wake up Intuit and Microsoft and knock them into reality. Would I recommend this software NO WAY!!! Am I stuck using it? Yes. Will I jump ship the first chance I get? Without looking.
"I should rate it ONE" I've used Quicken for years and Bragged that I write all my checks with the program. Then I got 2005, and my bank got bought out. Now, I've jumped through all the hoops, called both Quicken and my bank, been to my bank twice personally, and can't get sny psssword to work that will satisy both Quicken and the bank. (They use different ones.) It looks like I'm going to have to go back to paper checks.
Still not solved, and to say I'm frustrated is the understatement of the year. Try ro find "customer support." I wish I could get them on the same page. I could dictate a password. They want you to change passwords frequently!! HOW, for God's sake!
"Not so bad" Having read all the bad reviews and forced to upgrade from Q2002, I had to take the leap in order to continue with my porfolio dounloads and mgt. I knew I didn't want MS Money from an earlier try about 2 yrs ago. Anyway, I use it for checkbook entries/family expense management and investments/portfolio management. It converted everything from Q2002 without a hitch and I haven't had any problems. Unlike some other problem areas, I do not use the bill pay portion of Quicken. I can't download my bank transactions since they still use QIF, but I knew this ahead of time from all the Amazon reviews. In order to get the same functions as Q2002 deluxe, I had to get the Premier Home and Business. One of the other reviewers hit the nail on the head regarding the underhanded way Intuit tries to get our money. I just wish there was another competitor other than MS Money.....maybe there will be soon.
"Massive feature creep AND buggy online banking" Like many of the other reviewers, I've been using Quicken for quite some time. I was perfectly happy with Q2002, but Intuit wanted more of my money and started turning off all my online access unless I upgraded.
Q2005 has added any number of useless new "features" and you cannot seem to turn them off. Further, they insist on displaying a number of these "features" on the main register screens, cluttering up the display. I can no longer have my banking browser window open along with Quicken because the Quicken screen has all this extra junk around the register.
Add features fine. But let me ignore them, please. Don't clutter the screen with buttons and panes that I don't want to use. The technical term for this is "feature creep" where a good program is ruined by too many features. This program is becoming as unwieldy and impossible as Microsoft Word.
***One glaring bug***
When I schedule an online payment (using my bank's online banking), the scheduled payment appears in the register's "Num" column WITH A CHECK NUMBER. In my case, this check number happens to be a duplicate of previous check numbers (it's about 200 less than my current check number). Since I write many more online checks than paper ones, it will eventually march through my paper check numbers, creating all sorts of confusion. To fix this, one has to manually change the "Num" field (and can do so only after the payment is sent) to EFT or whatever you usually use to indicate an online (numberless) payment. What a royal pain!!!

What our customer's say!
"Long time Quicken user", I've been using Quicken for at least 10-15 yrs. I have no business relationship to Intuit other than being a long time user of TurboTax and Quicken. I've read all the negative comments about Quicken 2005 and am very surprised. I've been using 2005 Business & Premier for 2-3 yrs and have had no problems after upgrading from earlier version. It's a great program. Works perfectly. I'm a little disappointed that Quicken is making me upgrade to 2008 shortly due to lack of on-line download support. But I'll pay for the upgrade because of the overwhelming value I get from Quicken.
"Quitting Quicken!", The changes Intuit has made to what was ONCE a useful product, are TOO MUCH! The WORST, to me, is that much of my 15 years of investment data became inaccessable after I converted. Am not sure, but think the program refuses to access old, inactive investment accounts.
Do not KNOW, because I simply kept the old program (Q2000) and data! No apologies - the company always claimed to be intuitive and user-friendly; for over a decade, it WAS friendly enough, even when I had to start using ZIP disks to back up. It isn't friendly any more, though.
I've spent untold hours recording all my financial information since 1991, including those inactive investment accounts. Quicken 2000 will simply have to keep me going; had meant to upgrade earlier years ago, but am no longer sorry. Read the reviews of Quicken 2003-onward - enough said.
"It has bugs", There are problems when making payments to vendors. If I select "print check" it will NOT show up in check writing section unless I give it a check number, save it, then put it back to print again. You also have to re-click on values several times to get credit updates to sync. I've gotten so used to it I do it automatically, but these are basic things that should have been worked out.
"The Best Accounting Software So Far...", I have tride both Peachtree and Quickbooks. These software offer robust accounting features but can be overwhelming for a home office/medium business user. Quicken answers with this great piece of software. It has features for all of my small business and personal finance needs.
"Too buggy", I was surprised to see how buggy this piece of software is. Couldn't get it to work. It downloaded statement from my bank but that was a month old.
I am reverting back to Money Express that came free with my PC. That one has much less feature set but at least it works for my basic needs.
Tried the trial version of Moneydance. The user interface seems like it was developed by a bunch of school kids. But it works for many of my needs. Didn't want to pay 30 bucks. Will consider it in future though. Quicken really shocked me with its poor quality. It crashed several times. It is ironic that an anti-Microsoft* guy like me is actually happier with their product compared to its better selling competitor. Oh well. Shame on Intuit. *p.s: am a fan of Mr. Gates though

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Good update, no problems here", The bad reviews given to this product almost made me decide against upgrading from my older version (2002). But I decided to do it anyway, and I'm glad I did.
I encountered no problems and everything works pretty much the way it always did. I don't see any great improvements, and I don't like change, so I wish I hadn't been forced into upgrading (they discontinued support for the old version, including updating).
As in any program upgrade, there appear to be many things they changed for change sake, rather than for improved performance, but these were minor and just take a bit of getting used to.
Perhaps I just don't use the functions that caused problems for everyone else, but I use the portfolio, invoicing, scheduled payments, etc., plus the retirement and savings modules, etc. I do not sych to the Quicken website and use the update feature only to update prices on my portfolio.
Since everyone uses and needs different functions, the problems that other people encounter may not affect you at all. Like me, you may find it a perfectly satisfactory upgrade.
"I actually like Quicken 2005....", Ok, I see a ton of bad reviews for Quicken 2005 PH&B, but I actually like it. I think the big difference between me and a lot of other people here is that I have never used Quicken before (or any other Quicken-type software). So I never had to go through an upgrade process or deal with anything like that. If you are starting fresh, I'd have to recommend Quicken 2005 to you. Now, I understand that Quicken is using the new OFX format. My credit cards are using this format, but my banks are not. So I have to enter some stuff in on my own. That's fine with me. Most of my stuff comes through the credit cards anyways.
I've never experienced any bugs or incorrect calculations. The first thing I did after installing the software was update it to Release 3 so maybe that's why. I'd suggest that everybody does the same.
Quicken 2005 is very powerful and very organized and I enjoy using it.
"More glitches from Intuit", I'd already purchased Quicken 2005 when I read these reviews, so I put it on my laptop so that it wouldn't mess up my previous versions on the desktop machine. It synced perfectly with my bank--once. Now it says "invalid PIN" for my bank, although the PIN is not invalid; it's still the same one with which I can access the account otherwise.
Chalk up another glitch for this program, and beware: it may work once, but it won't work again. Sigh.
" Lack of competition evident in way Intuit treats customers", I've used Quicken since 1989 (the DOS version). Through the years, I've upgraded when Intuit offered significant improvements. I bought Quicken 2001 to be able to archive data online, a feature that was discontinued a couple of months after my purchase. Also attractive was being able to download transactions directly from a bank or credit card company. I've been doing fine with 2001, but have been bombarded recently with notices from Intuit that 2001 is being euthanized so that all of us for whom it works perfectly well must fork over another $70 for 2005. After three telephone calls trying to understand East Indian English, I finally got instructions to download 2005 with a $10 crumb of a discount for my 15 years of loyalty. One of the first screens insisted that I buy Intuit's online bill pay service. I like to know what a prospective purchase is going to cost, so I spent a half hour navigating various screens trying to find out. I got to the place where you click "Buy" without ever getting a price. It's the old trick of having you type your autobiography before they tell you, in the hopes you'll be so tired you'll go for whatever they ask in the way of a price. I then uploaded my data from my backup disks only to find that 2005 had deleted seven months of transactions from my major credit card. I am now faced with collecting the paper statements and manually entering hundreds of transactions before I can even start messing with "Turtle Tax!" Intuit's attitude stinks. To them, we are a bunch of suckers whose pockets they can pick at will, and I am sick of it. I'm almost ready to switch to that M-M-M-Microsoft product! AAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!
"Quicken 2005 seems to be disintegrating as I write", I also am a user of Quicken for many years. The array of problems with Quicken 2005 is astonishing. The Quicken Bill Pay interface has had three different and apparently unrelated problems since I started using it, the last of which remains unsolved. Quicken bill pay support has given up and just refers me to the Quicken software (India call center) tech support. I have already called them. In the last week or so they say they provide no support (despite how many software glitches they have to date) without charging a credit card first! And unrelated to bill pay, the tax estimating software has some genuinely bizarre glithes. As just one example, on the witholding estimator - it swaps the pretax deductions between my and my husband's paychecks so the results are bizarre. I tried evertything including deleting and reentering the payroll info - nothing helps. I could go on and on but I need to try to find new financial software.
